In this eye-opening episode of The Collective Perspective, we dismantle the idea that “ugly” is objective. From social media filters to public opinion, from art critiques to self-doubt, we ask: Who decides what's beautiful and why do we care so much? We explore how perception shapes our reality and how calling something “hideous” might say more about the observer than the observed. Whether it's politics, art, body image, or identity, this episode challenges us to examine the lens we use before labeling the world around us. ✨ Featuring real stories, cultural insight, and some hard-hitting self-reflection this one's for anyone ready to question the narrative and fix the filter in their own eyes. On this episode, Roy Jacques, Chip Judd, and Joey Svendsen discuss their views on the current state of the Church. From rampant unacknowledged hypocrisy to over-zealous political affiliations at the expense of God's Kingdom, the three share whether, at times, they are uncomfortable being associated with the Church. Churches consists of people who hurt people, because humanity is flawed, even in the church. Chip reflects on his decades of ministry, including church consulting and counseling of pastors and church staffs and says that some churches are flawed at a toxic level. Along the way, the three friends discuss professional athletes' exuberant salaries, Roy's broken heart after sending his two oldest to college, socialism vs. capitalism, and Chip gives an update on his current health—nine months after his double lung transplant. When Australian extreme metal outfit Werewolves proclaimed to the world that they intended to release 10 albums in 10 years, the collective sighs of here we go again hung loudly in the air. Bands have promised such things or similar immeasurable times in the past, with few managing to reach the lofty heights for which they had set themselves. Not to mention the discontent from fans who then started to doubt the honesty or integrity of anything that came out of their mouths from that moment forth. But with a pedigree of members from well-respected Australian bands such as Psycroptic, The Berzerker, and The Antichrist Imperium, more than a few people backed Werewolves in.That promise was made six years ago now, and lo and behold Werewolves have just released album number six, The Ugliest Of All. Described as a "devastating album with little let up or mercy", The Ugliest Of All is pure, face-melting extreme metal of the highest calibre, proving that even just over halfway through their quest, Werewolves are yet to start scraping the bottom of the creativity well. With the recent listen to the album still infecting our ears, HEAVY sat down to chat with guitarist Matt Wilcock to find out more. We start by asking how the early reception for the album has been."It's been good," he enthused. "It's album six. We've been around for six years or seven years, and we're up to album six. And to be honest, it's funny because for us, it's just another album, but we're happy with it and people seem to dig it. We're always excited to release another ridiculously brutal and stupid album."With such a regular release cycle, we wonder aloud if Matt even gives thought to what people think of their albums and if negative feedback could ever derail the process."Oh, there'll be another one," he grinned defiantly. "I mean, it's a bit of both. We do it because we love it, and it's kind of cool to see what people think. But if no one likes this one, then fuck them. We're going to do another one next year. And it's going to be even worse (laughs)."In the full interview, Matt provided an overview of The Ugliest Of All, highlighting its relentless intensity and the absence of slow songs, with the first half featuring catchier tracks and the second half increasing in aggression. He noted the band's growth in songwriting and the fact that their music is made for themselves first and foremost. We discussed the now compulsory dis song on each album, along with the cover art by Mitchell Nolte, which reflects the album's themes. We spoke about the back and forth when creating artwork for each album cover and how they develop from a simple sketch to a graphic piece. The 10 albums in 10 years promise came up, with HEAVY asking if it was becoming difficult to come up with quality material given the short amount of time between albums, as did their run of shows early next year with Abbath Doom Occulta and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

For some the Maison Margiela Artisanal 2025 show was everything they'd hoped for – clothes that stood for something and contained an otherworldly beauty and thoughtful details. For others, it was discomforting, even ugly and the fact that we couldn't see the models' faces was disturbing. In this episode of The Charisse Report we're going to look at themes of uglifying, destruction and sustainability, as well as smaller details like the body as a canvas the masks, plastic and the music from the show. After that I'll share my favourite looks with you.If you want a visual version of this episode you can find it on YouTube and Spotify. In this episode: Martin Margiela, Antwerp, Maison Margiela, Glenn Martens, Yohan Serfaty, Inge Grognard, Gary Gill, Diesel, Fashion, The Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan, Lucas Emilio Brunner, Uglify, Lewis CarrollMorgan DeBaun Digital twin video: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DMLHGpISF9u/?igsh=bnVrMjZqazU3c2d1 Nick Cave interview: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DKZAqbBAB5a/?igsh=MWpsa2xkNGp1cDVjYQ==Imagery: Martin Margiela's White Universe 1988-2008 published by MoMu Fashion MuseumVogue Runway@maison.margiela.archive on IGBooksUgly: The Aesthetics of Everything by Stephen Bayley: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/116280726122Maison Martin Margiela's White Universe 1988-2008 MoMu 2025: https://tenderbooks.co.uk/products/martin-margielas-white-universe-1988-2008
This episode is part of our HOUSE Conference 2025 lead‑up series from Youthworks, exploring this year's theme — The Cost and Joy of Sacrifice. In this episode, we share the full audio of the conference paper The Beauty and Ugliness of Sacrifice, written by Rev Dr Graham Stanton. This theological paper, with a pastoral edge, explores the beauty of sacrifice as an ideal for Christian living and the dangers we need to be aware of when using this language — all with implications for how we minister to young people and children. These papers are designed to take us from deep reflection in Scripture and theology to practical application in youth and children's ministry. As you listen, be thinking about how the principles you hear might shape the way you disciple the next generation in your church. If you haven't already, we recommend listening first to our taster episode (The Cost and the Joy of Sacrifice | House Taster 2025) for an accessible introduction to the topic.Find out more about HOUSE Conference 2025 → https://youthworks.net/houseLinks & Resources:HOUSE Conference 2025 – https://youthworks.net/houseTaster Episode – The Cost and the Joy of Sacrifice | House Taster 2025Effective Ministry Podcast Archive – https://feeds.transistor.fm/the-effective-ministry-podcast

With Mike Collins making his move to take Jon Ossoff's Senate seat comes a wide-open Congressional seat in northeast Georgia. Republicans like state representative Houston Gaines and former Congressman Paul Broun are licking their chops, but as we here know, there's a plucky Democrat already on the road campaigning in that district: Lexy Doherty. She was on this show about seven weeks ago. A worthy and timely revisit no?------'Fixer Upper' power couple Chip & Joanna Gaines have built a reality TV empire and had been the darlings of evangelical America; that is, until they - gasp - cast a married gay male couple and their twin boys for the reality series "Back To The Frontier." Then came the ugliness. Listen, I know somewhere there's some written or unwritten reason I'm not supposed to like Chip & Jo, but I like 'em. Their having never booked a gay person or couple for their 'Fixer Upper' series isn't an issue for me (mostly because what gay person wants to move to Waco? I kid; I kid), because I see inherent goodness in them. Well, so did most of evangelical America until this show's cast was revealed. It's that element of religious extremism that just keeps dividing humanity. I noted a passage on friend of the show Dom Kelly's personal Facebook page. On a recent post, he shared that he'd become something of a pen pal with a Palestinian Gazan father not unlike him - in fact quite similar. Despite Kelly being a Jewish American and Ahmed being a Muslim Palestinian, they had plenty of common ground to develop a lovely bond. There's no citation (yet) to attribute because I share this from his personal and private page, but I do hope you'll listen to me sharing the passage. It's so moving, and gut-wrenching, too.
In this challenging devotional, we’re invited to look beyond the familiar, graceful images of the cross and confront its raw, uncomfortable reality. Drawing from Hebrews 12:1-2, the author reveals how Jesus endured the shame, mockery, and cruelty of the cross — not as a symbol of beauty, but as a testament to His love and faithfulness. This is faith in its most extreme, honest form.

The Frog Princess is a classic fairy tale that is present in many storytelling traditions, especially concentrated in the Slavic cultures of Eastern Europe. Ugliness and beauty mix in a striking tale that leads to the renewal of a kingdom, a marriage, and the hero himself. As we will see in a Russian version, the story of the Frog Princess is packed with symbolism which ties the strange world of fairy tales to our own lives. The murder last week of CEO Brian Thompson on the streets of New York in broad daylight inspired large-scale celebration. The article from the Times and social media posts show delight in his murder; the celebration of his murderer as a hero. What is wrong with us? How could thousands of Americans celebrate murder? There is an ugliness and hate in our nation now. Is there any way to heal it? Our reading this week deals with violence in a violent place, Shechem: the rape of Dinah, the revenge of Simon and Levi. Violence often leads to more violence. Hate to more hate. Ugliness to more ugliness. But are those cycles inevitable? What do we learn from this violent story about how to heal the hate in our world now, if healing is even possible? In the wake of Brian Thompson's murder, much has been written and spoken about anger, outrage, fury at the health insurance industry's denials and delays which have led to death and dying during people's most vulnerable times. Does our Torah offer us a better way to respond to this pain than what happened on the streets of New York?
Join in with this honest prayer, lifting up concerns about ugliness, scariness, fracture and monsters. But also metamorphosis, love and standing valiant for truth.
