D. J. Taylor, literary critic, novelist and Whitbread Prize-winning author of the definitive Orwell: The Life and its highly acclaimed sequel The New Life, and Masha Karp, Orwell scholar, former Russian features editor at the BBC World Service and author of George Orwell and Russia, join the Slightly Foxed team at the kitchen table in Hoxton Square to take a fresh and deeply personal look at the life and work of George Orwell. The man who wrote Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four defies categorization. In this quarter's literary podcast David and Masha sift through newly discovered stashes of letters written by Orwell in the 1930s, and share personal recollections from his adopted son Richard and other living members of his inner circle to tease out fact from fiction and explore the legacy of Orwell's life and work. We start with the chance discovery by a Bonham's auctioneer of nineteen letters from Orwell to a girlfriend, found in a tatty old handbag on the floor of a mouse-ridden woodshed (thrillingly packaged in a nondescript envelope labelled ‘Burn after my death'). Then we're off on a journey through the many-faceted romantic, literary, social and political aspects of Orwell's short life, from the years when he was flitting between jobs and relationships in the small coastal town of Southwold and living down and out in Paris, to his death from tuberculosis in 1950 via his life-altering experience in Spain as a Republican volunteer against Franco. David and Masha draw us deep into Orwell's world – a place of gangsters with gramophones, banned books, vanishing documents, encounters with KGB spies and yet more old girlfriends appearing out of the shadows with revelatory letters – and discuss the long reach of his influence on contemporary literature and political thinking. Books mentioned We may be able to get hold of second-hand copies of the out-of-print titles listed below. Please get in touch with Jess in the Slightly Foxed office for more information. In this seasonal episode, the Slightly Foxed team are guided through a snowstorm of winter writing over twelve centuries by the literary critic and author of Weatherland, Alexandra Harris. The tour takes us from Anglo-Saxon mead halls and monsters to Renaissance bodily humours, then on through cool, translucent Enlightenment weather into the dark cloud of the nineteenth century and beyond. We visit frost-fair carnivals on the frozen Thames with Virginia Woolf’s Orlando, brave the Brontës’ wild moorland, stay steamed up indoors with Jane Austen, sink into Dickens’s pea-soupers and see in the ‘year’s midnight’ with John Donne as we listen to a winter’s tale through literature. Slightly Foxed Editors Gail and Hazel take us between the pages of the magazine, bookmarking articles along the way. Crack the spine of the quarterly to discover T. H. White taking flying lessons, smutty book titles, a passion for romantic ruins, John Berger shadowing a remarkable GP, a rebellious Mitford ‘rescued’ by a destroyer, a night to remember on the Titanic and much more besides. From correcting proofs to welcoming writers with a host of experiences, the story of putting together an issue of enthusiasms unfolds. And in this month’s reading from the archives, a hapless apprentice at the Hogarth Press recounts his disastrous stint with the Woolfs. Click to Download Audio "Easy left a long time ago." - Chris Anselmo The subject matter of disabilities, especially muscular dystrophy, is a subject matter near and dear to my heart. I spent eight years of my life producing and directing the documentary film GO FAR: The Christopher Rush Story about the first quadriplegic to become a licensed scuba diver who was also a former national poster child for the muscular dystrophy association. In addition to many additional accomplishments such as becoming an honorary NASA astronaut and earning a law degree, Christopher Rush was also one of my best friends. Sadly the world lost Christopher in 2007 before I ever got the chance to really sit down and talk with him about how he developed the mental strength and courage to overcome such a debilitating disease and live a full life with optimism every day. Luckily because of GO FAR I’ve met a lot of amazing and inspirational people, many of whom have reached out to me because of the film and how it inspired them. And this is what sparked today interview with my guest Chris Anselmo. Chris Anselmo is a writer living with an adult-onset form of Muscular Dystrophy called Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy Type 2B. But here’s the catch: For the first 21 years of his life, Chris was an able-bodied, active young adult. Then one day, while going for a run, he noticed his muscles tiring out faster than normal. Over the next ten years, Chris experienced progressive, unrelenting muscle weakness, and today uses a wheelchair to get around. In the beginning, Chris struggled to accept what was happening to him. In addition to getting weaker, he found himself depressed and questioning what he could still do in life. Over time, however, through trial and error, he was able to piece his life back together and learn how to dream again. And that’s what we’re going to dig into in this interview: How can you develop a positive outlook and continue forging ahead in life when faced with extreme adversity? Click to Download Audio Here are two things that rarely ever happen: Me spending more than five minutes per day on Twitter. Twitter providing profound and meaningful value powerful enough to change someone’s perspective of life as they know it. But the perfect storm happened recently when I discovered this story while killing a few minutes on Twitter before a client session. Get This… Apparently a married couple in China was going through old photos of themselves as teenagers, and they stumbled upon similar photos where each of them was standing in front of the same monument twenty years before. Cool coincidence, right? Here’s where it gets interesting. The husband photobombed his wife in the background of her picture without either of them realizing it. They took the exact same picture at the EXACT SAME MOMENT in time. Your mind still isn’t blow yet? The husband photobombed his wife’s picture YEARS before they ever met - the same location at the same single second in time in a country with over 1 BILLION people (before digital photography no less). I’m not a mathematician or a quantum physicist, but I would guess the sheer probability of this has got to be around 0%. Yet it happened. And not only did it happen, but there’s documented proof. The WHAT Isn’t As Important As the WHY This story quickly went viral with many news organizations and websites sharing it, but as far as I can find, everyone has focused on WHAT happened and how amazing this coincidence is. I have yet to find a story about WHY this is important. Realizing there are certain things that happen in life beyond our ability to comprehend got me thinking about the life lessons one could take from a seemingly impossible occurrence such as this. I reached out to my readers & listeners to see how this story impacted them: For me this is a great reminder that life will always guide us where we need to be. So why stress?! I've had a few instances where if I missed an opportunity that was meant to be, it appeared for me again later just like it did for them. True grace. Julie F. It seems like this story and the photo proves the old saying that there are no insignificant moments. Robert G. Amazing indeed... just what I needed cause I’m about to give up on ever finding a job. Lesson to be taken? Don’t ever give up! Christine S. No matter your religious or spiritual beliefs, it’s hard to question that these photos affirm something we cannot quite comprehend is most likely guiding us in some way, shape, or form. And I too agree that there is no such thing as “insignificant moments,” only moments we choose to ignore. Plus thanks largely in part to Christopher Rush, “never give up” is a mantra I live by every single day. But I think there’s another lesson in this story that anyone can apply to their own lives that will lead to success, no matter the goal they are pursuing. What this couple didn’t realize until twenty years later is that at this very moment they were writing ‘Day One’ of their origin story. The Power of Perspective While there’s no way to know what was actually going through the minds of these two young adults while taking these pictures, let’s speculate for a second and make up our own story. Let’s assume the young man in the photo was frustrated and depressed because he’s still single no matter how hard he looks for his soulmate. He’s miserable that he’s making no progress and can’t see the finish line, especially given he was sure he would have found someone by now. Even worse, he doesn’t believe there’s a path he can follow, and he has no feeling of control. Therefore he’s chosen to give up on finding true love - it just doesn’t exist. The young man is focused on the destination, and because he hasn’t reached it yet, he has labeled himself a failure. Let’s assume the young woman in the photo was also single and looking for her soulmate, but her perspective is different. She truly believes that her soulmate is out there and the time will come when they meet, so she continues to live her life with joy and purpose and embrace the struggle knowing the day will come when she finds her soulmate. She continues to put herself out there even when the people she meets along the way aren’t the right fit. The young woman is focused on the process and is willing to embrace the struggle along the way, confident her actions are leading her closer to the finish line. Same picture, yet two very different perspectives. So...what the heck does a twenty-year old photobomb in China have to do with you? There is a good chance you are approaching the most meaningful goals in your life the same way the young man in the photo was. Do you identify more with guy #1 or guy #2? Having spoken one-on-one with hundreds of people in creative professions similar to mine, the overarching theme is the frustration that there is no single path to follow that will lead to success. Not knowing whether or not your actions are leading you forwards causes stress, anxiety, and ultimately causes many people to simply give up because they are seemingly “getting nowhere.” While taking nothing away from the difficult accomplishment that is becoming a doctor or lawyer, they have a very clear path to follow with benchmarks along the way. But in creative professions it’s conceivable that you can spend $100,000+ on your education and also spend years doing additional training and working unpaid internships only to end up fetching a director’s coffee and dry cleaning for the next ten years. I spent the first decade of my film editing career jumping between random indie trailers, featurettes, short documentaries, as well as editing several low budget indie films (that I’d prefer to not have on my IMDB page). If I had to choose a single word to describe the first ten years of my career it would be “scattershot.” Had I set the goal, “I will be a successful A-list editor working in scripted dramatic television by age 29,” I would’ve woken up on my 29th birthday as a massive failure. My only choice that morning would have been to turn around with my shoulders shrugged, my tail tucked between my legs, and become an accountant because that would be the “reliable choice.” Yet less than a year later I landed my dream job editing the television show Burn Notice because I focused on the process and had clarity about the destination I was working towards, I took action consistently, and I embraced the struggle along the way, confident my consistent actions would lead me to the right opportunity...eventually. Change Your Vocabulary, Change Your Life You will no doubt call me a liar, but I affirm the following statement to be 100% true: I don’t have any problems in my life. Not one single solitary problem. How in the world is this possible? My life is FAR from perfect and I struggle every single day to balance a demanding job as a television editor, documentary director, blogger & podcaster, father of 2 highly energetic and creative kids, being present for my wife, as well as building multiple online education programs both for my own business as well as LinkedIn Learning. The reason I don’t have problems in my life is because the word “problem” isn’t a part of my vocabulary. My life is instead full of challenges and obstacles. When I’m faced with challenges and obstacles in my life, I know there are only two possible outcomes. I will overcome my challenges and obstacles and succeed. I will fail, learn from the experience by understanding WHY I failed, and then continue forging ahead. No matter the challenge or obstacle I’m facing at the time, and no matter how many times I fail, I’m always thinking one thing: “When I succeed, this is going to make a great story.” Be willing to embrace the many challenges and obstacles in your life as learning opportunities. The more you fail, the faster you’re learning. And the faster you learn, the closer you are to success. Moreover, it’s okay if your roadmap to success is fuzzy right now - just make sure your picture of the destination is crystal clear. Most importantly, be okay with the uncertainty of not knowing exactly what the path to success looks like because the next important action you are about to take is just another chapter of your “origin story.” Who knows, maybe twenty years from now you’ll be working with the next Steven Spielberg (or you’ll even BE the next Steven Spielberg), and you’ll realize that you photobombed Spielberg himself while you were getting coffee for his assistant’s assistant. Interested in learning how to design your own unique roadmap to success? I’d love to work with you in the first round of my ‘Design Yourself’ program. Learn more about setting goals and achieving them: Here’s Why Over 90% of People Fail to Achieve Their Resolutions Finding Your ‘One Thing’ | with Jay Papasan Why People Fail and How to Properly Set Your Goals | with Jeanette Goodrich
(This article is the introduction to my brand new Design Yourself series intended to help you properly set goals that you will achieve, get important sh*t done in your life, and design the optimized version of you) It’s officially the time of year when life has kicked back into full gear. The holidays are long gone yet summer vacations are months away, every day is “crazy busy!” and unfortunately the chances are roughly 91%1 that whatever New Year’s Resolutions you set for yourself have failed...again. The worst part is you are most likely blaming yourself: “I just don’t have the willpower to eat a healthier diet.” “I don’t have the energy or the motivation to exercise regularly.” “There aren’t enough hours in the day to learn new skills...my job is crazy enough.” “Meditating every morning requires too much discipline.” “I’m just not the kind of person who achieves difficult goals.” But the good news is it’s not your fault. You have not given up on your New Year’s Resolutions because you are a weak or lazy person who lacks motivation, willpower, and discipline. The system is rigged, and it feeds off your failure in order to survive. Luckily all you have to do is stop following the system society has provided and introduce a different system into your life specifically designed to help you achieve your goals. The key is to stop chasing after the next shiny object and start playing the long game. It’s time to stop playing checkers and start playing chess. The Myth of the “Get Healthy Quick” Scheme We’ve all been up late on a Friday night hypnotized by the glistening human specimens pushing themselves “To the extreme!” in infomercials for programs such as P90X, Insanity, or the latest miracle contraption as we mindlessly murder the (third) bag of Doritos draped across our chest. Maybe it was the self-loathing, the upbeat motivational music, or perhaps it was the promise of rock-hard abs in as little as 60 days that got you to drop $100 or more on whatever program or tool was advertised....only to let it remain unopened because opening it will inevitably lead to failure, more self-loathing, and another late night date with the next infomercial (and another bag of Doritos). We’re all guilty of buying a diet book, exercise program, online learning course, or workout app that went unused, or at best that we tried for a few days or a few weeks before going back to our old habits. We wanted to believe that this one single purchase combined with “a little bit more discipline” would finally allow us to achieve our goals. Yet we fail year after year hitting the reset button every January expecting to get different results despite repeating the same behaviors over and over. As much as we’d like to place the blame elsewhere, the problem is not the tools, the apps, the diet books, or the exercise programs. P90X is the most successful home workout program of all time for a reason - because it’s awesome. The problem is we’ve never been taught how to set goals properly. Take a look at the top 5 New Year’s Resolutions of 20171: Lose Weight 21.4% Self improvements 12.3% Make better financial decisions 8.5% Quit smoking 7.1% Do more exciting things 6.3% And here is a list of the most popular resolutions based on over 150 million Google searches from January through October of 20162: Get Healthy Get Organized Live Life to the Fullest Learn New Hobbies Spend Less & Save More It’s no surprise that 91% of people fail to achieve their resolutions - These aren’t goals! They are vague ideas at best, mirages at the end of an invisible finish line with no clear definition. But luckily for the diet & fitness industries, you only need an extremely small percentage of success stories to provide sexy “before & after” photos in order to get the vast majority of people to assume the program will work for them too. You know what generates billions of dollars? Total life transformation in 90 days. You know what doesn’t generate billions of dollars? Gradual lifestyle change. It doesn’t stop at diet & exercise programs. The Internet feeds off your desire to transform your life, lose weight, eat better, and become more productive, happier, healthier, or wealthier. And it no longer takes 60-90 days. Thanks to the blogosphere, you can now literally transform your entire life in one day! Here is a collection of some of my favorite headlines: How To Change Your Life In Just One Day How to Change Your Life Around In a Matter of Hours (Because a day is too long) 45 Ways to be Happier Instantly 50 Small Ways to Increase Your Happiness 60 Small Ways to Improve Your Life In the Next 100 Days The Psychological Trick You Can Learn in 10 Minutes That Will Change Your Life Want to Become a Multi-Millioniare? Do These 15 Things Immediately Let’s be honest...when was the last time you read a 1000 word “listicle” and were truly inspired to change your life by doing all 60 actions on that list? Probably never. These articles are good for nothing more than five minutes of mindless distraction while you sit on the toilet. Luckily for the authors of these posts, they don’t have to post the success rate of the readers who implemented their ideas. All they require is traffic. And like sexy infomercials and rock-hard abs, it’s hard not to click on a link promising that there are “20 different ways to lose weight while you sleep.” If your intention is to make meaningful progress towards the most important goals in your life, it’s time to stop setting vague resolutions hoping that the next all-or-nothing program, shake weight, or 5-minute toilet read will change your life. It’s time to learn how to set goals that you can achieve using a simple-to-follow and repeatable system. Designing Your Roadmap to Success I guarantee one thing: You are not going to completely change your entire life in 90 days. Most people overestimate what they can achieve in a year but drastically underestimate what they can achieve in a decade3. Before setting your first goal, be okay knowing that it may take 90 days just to have clarity about what your goal truly looks like and develop the confidence that you have what it takes to achieve it. And once you have clearly defined what you want to accomplish, it’s going to take time to build the daily habits necessary to consistently take action. The number one fallacy that most people make when making resolutions or setting goals is making them exceedingly vague. If you want to achieve your goals, you must BE SPECIFIC. Don’t vow to yourself that you are going to “get healthy” this year, think about a more specific way you could become a healthier person. Here are a few examples: Lose weight Sleep 8 hours every night Eat a healthier diet Take up a hobby to decrease stress Work less hours every week Once you have narrowed down where you’d like to focus your energy to “get healthy,” the next step is to turn this into a concrete macro goal statement by asking yourself the following questions: Is my goal something I can track and measure on a regular basis? If the way you want to get healthier this year is to “lose weight,” that’s an okay start. But simply wanting to lose weight still isn’t a macro goal. Committing to losing 20 pounds, however, is the beginning of a much more specific goal that is MEASURABLE. If you can’t track your goal on a regular basis you have no way of knowing whether or not your actions and behaviors are leading you closer to success or failure. What you measure, you can improve upon. Is your goal actionable and achievable? Unfortunately “getting healthy” is not an ACTIONABLE goal. If someone told you, “I want you to get healthy right now!” what would you even do, and where would you even start? But if you instead resolve to lose weight and you’ve defined the amount as 20 pounds, now you can begin to brainstorm the possible actions necessary to succeed. Now let’s say instead your goal is to lose 100 pounds instead of 20...is that as achievable? Make sure you have set a goal that is ACHIEVABLE, but also make sure it forces you to step outside your comfort zone because that’s where the magic happens. Is this goal relevant to my life right now? If your goal is to lose 20 pounds but you are about to have your first child and you are working 60 hours a week in a sedentary job, perhaps losing 20 pounds isn’t a realistic goal that is RELEVANT to your life right now. Rather than setting yourself up for failure, perhaps you need to modify your goal based on your current life circumstances. You could instead set a goal of doubling your daily step count from 3500 to 7000 steps per day. That may or may not lead to weight loss anyway, but it’s more relevant to your current circumstances and is much more achievable. Design relevant goals based on your current circumstances and set yourself up for success, never for failure. Does my goal have a deadline? So you’re committed to losing 20 pounds in order to “get healthy” this year...fantastic! But how much time have you given yourself to achieve this goal? If your goal is to lose 20 pounds someday, good luck with that. Or maybe you’re more realistic and the plan is to start...tomorrow? Instead of thinking losing 20 pounds is something you will get to eventually, set a concrete deadline. Saying, “I’m going to lose 20 pounds in the next 6 months” is a TIME-SENSITIVE goal that will motivate you to begin taking immediate action. Don’t think deadlines make a difference? I don’t care how much you procrastinate, how lazy you are, or how little motivation or willpower you think you possess. If your house is a mess, the best productivity strategy to get yourself to clean it is to invite your mother-in-law over for dinner. I guarantee creating that time-sensitive deadline will get your butt in gear. Now apply this mindset to your specific goal. Once you have taken the steps to get from “I want to get healthy” to “I want to lose 20 pounds in the next 6 months,” it’s time to ask yourself the most important question of all that will be the difference between your success or failure. The Importance of Defining Your ‘Why’ Whatever goal you set isn’t going to be easy if it pushes you outside your comfort zone. Losing 20 pounds isn’t an easy goal to achieve for most people. If it were then we wouldn’t be in the midst of the largest obesity epidemic we’ve seen in modern history. Your life will be filled with distractions every single day that pull you away from your goal. Simply wanting to lose weight isn’t enough to stop you from devouring the box of donuts your colleagues bring in every Friday morning (I love you guys at Unsolved, but seriously you’re killing me). Image courtesy of Bethany Newman, Unsplash.com If you intend to become a member of the elite group of the less than 10% of people who follow through with their goals, you better have a very clear understanding of WHY achieving your goal is important to you. This is an incredibly simple (but not easy) process where all you do is continually ask yourself ‘Why is achieving my goal important to me?’ as if you were a five year old. Why is losing weight important to you? Because I’d look better and my clothes would fit me again. Great...so why is that important? Because if I looked better and my clothes fit I’d have more confidence in myself (and my spouse might also find me more attractive). Great...so why is that important? Having more confidence in myself would help me do better creative work and energize me again in a career where I feel stuck and unmotivated. Great...so why is that important? (Sensing a pattern here?) Doing better work and having passion for my career again could lead to a promotion or a new job that pays a lot more. Great...so why is that important? Landing a new job that I’m passionate about that also pays more would allow me to better support my family and be a more energetic and positive role model for my young kids. I don’t know about you, but I could care less about losing 20 pounds for the sake of looking better. I all but guarantee, however, that if losing weight led to landing a new job that I was passionate about and transformed me into a more supportive, attentive, and positive role model for my young children, it would be a helluva lot easier to politely decline the Friday morning donuts. Looking better and having clothes that fit me would just be an added bonus but no longer the destination. The 5-Step Framework That Makes Success Inevitable You have clearly defined your macro goal and you know why achieving it is so important to you. It’s time to get busy! ….Not so fast. Before jumping into the deep end and taking action, if you truly want to succeed where you’ve failed so many times in the past, there are several more equally important steps after defining your macro goal. Remember, you’re no longer setting vague goals and crossing your fingers hoping they magically come true - you are building a system that will make success inevitable. The system that I’ve used for the last decade that ensures I achieve every goal I set is the 5-step GO FAR framework originally conceived by Christopher Rush, the first quadriplegic with muscular dystrophy to become a licensed scuba diver. https://youtu.be/IOoDQvUfKRs Losing 20 pounds doesn’t sound so overwhelming anymore compared to the thought of rendering your limbs useless, weighing yourself down, and then being thrown into the ocean does it? In a future installment of my Design Yourself series I’ll cover the second step of the GO FAR framework where you will learn how to identify and overcome the OBSTACLES that will stop you from achieving your goals. If you’re interested in developing laser-sharp focus and taking real action towards the most important goals in your life, having complete clarity on what needs to get done, having 100% confidence that you are doing what’s necessary, and knowing how to take action consistently, then I invite you to join the waitlist for my ‘Focus Yourself’ program so you are the first to know when beta enrollment opens (and get a steep discount). Hey Guys, Sorry about last week. We try to deliver something that can hopefully make your Monday go by just that much better, should you choose to listen, but I (Adrian) made an error early on in the cast that cost the whole episode to evaporate. Nevertheless, we have returned this week with the full trio as well as being joined by Evan and Andrew from Atlanta representing TeamTusk. These guys have been streaming their Legacy Events and have been getting everyone hyped up for them. You can check them out and watch their streams at www.twitch.tv/tuskvision We were also joined by another special guest, familiar with the fine cuisine in the Metro-Atlanta area. As for the fundraiser that some may have heard about (since Chewie mentioned it on The Mana Pool), we have been pooling together commons to bulk out and donating the proceeds. We weren’t looking for huge boxes. We were just looking for the rest of the pack you didn’t want in an envelope. What we have been doing is creating a donation where 50% will go to MTGCast and 50% will go to The Wounded Warrior Project. There are also auctions going on for an alternative way to assist. Currently a silent auction with blind bidding is going on for a lightning bolt serialized playmat from Providence signed by Christopher Rush. I (Adrian) am taking bids in direct message only on Twitter and Facebook. Feel free to get your bid submitted to me through either of those channels before the auction closes. You can also email the cast at leavingalegacymtg@gmail.com Thanks for all your support. You can find us on Twitter with, Adrian – @mathematrickste Jerry – @JMee3rd and Pat – @PatEuglow
Mark remembers the life of Christopher Rush and shares stories about their interactions.
This week's episode title refers both to mourning the loss of Wayne England and Christopher Rush, as well as what the people who came up with the card names for Shadows Over Innistrad likely did to their rooms as teenagers. Also we talk Standard decks.
Jokes You Can Use: A man wrote a letter to the IRS: “I have been unable to sleep knowing that I have cheated on my income tax. I understated my taxable income and have enclosed a check for $200.00. If I still can’t sleep, I will send the rest.” THE CAT: One day, a cat dies of natural causes and goes to heaven, where he meets the Lord Himself. The Lord says to the cat, "You lived a good life, and if there is any way I can make your stay in heaven more comfortable, please let me know." The cat thinks for a moment and says, "Lord, all my life I have lived with a poor family and had to sleep on a hard wooden floor." The Lord stops the cat and says, "Say no more," and a wonderful, fluffy pillow appears. A few days later, six mice are killed in a tragic farming accident, and all of them go to heaven. Again, the Lord is there to greet them with the same offer. The mice answer, "All our lives we have been chased. We have had to run from cats, dogs, and even women with brooms. Running, running, running; we're tired of running. Do you think we could have roller skates so that we don't have to run anymore?" The Lord says, "Say no more" and fits each mouse with beautiful new roller skates. Week later, the Lord stops by to see the cat and finds him snoozing on the pillow. The Lord gently wakes the cat and asks him, "How are things since you got here?" The cat stretches and yawns, then replies, "It is wonderful here. Better than I could have ever expected. And those 'Meals On Wheels' you've been sending by are the best!" On Our Mind: MAMSE Troy gets an Award and a Surprise!
