Barry and Abigail discuss Uh-Oh by David Byrne and sample Wheel Man, Afterglow, and Island Drive from Lincoln & South Brewing Company in Hilton Head Island, Florida. Barry and Abigail spoke briefly about Renée Richards while discussing Now I'm Your Mom. Renée is a transgender woman who competed professionally in tennis in the 1970s. She also fought and won a landmark case in transgender rights in the New York Supreme Court after being barred from numerous women's tennis competitions in 1976 for refusing to take a genetic test to verify her chromosomes. Barry recalled Renée's story as being one of the first instances of widespread media coverage of transgender issues. Abigail heard vague similarities between Girls on My Mind and various songs from The Raconteurs' Consolers of the Lonely (most notably Old Enough). David Byrne performed at the Oscars for his nominated co-written song from Everything Everywhere All at Once, This Is a Life. Read more about the performance. This episode covers both Jack White projects outside of the White Stripes, The Raconteurs and Dead Weather respectively. The Raconteurs follow-up album, Consolers of the Lonely (2008), was made after the band had toured together and developed their chemistry and as band. This album takes risks, rushing to the finish line for both better and worse.Next would be the debut of Led Zepplin-esque revival band, centered around sex and death, The Dead Weather. Another super group of sorts, Allison Mosshart of the Kills is on vocals, with Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age on guitar, Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs/Greenhorns on bass, and Jack White on drums. Jack was originally a drummer, and his chops are insane -- but this was a wild card, totally unexpected. And yet, it works so, so well. --Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. Coming out as a blues rock, punk aesthetic garage rock band with child-like drummer Meg White, The White Stripes paved the way for a lot of acts to come. As their success grew, Jack White branched out into other projects, including the classic rock inspired "super group" The Raconteurs, and Led Zeppelin-spirit revival, hard as nails "super group," The Dead Weather. As Jack gained momentum elsewhere, The White Stripes came to an end, leaving room for Jack White to explore a solo career. Throughout his solo career, he started honing his comfort material -- country, blues, and fuzz rock -- moving toward new grounds with experimental noise, high tech production, and unexpected plot twists.Tyler, being a conseur of pop and knower of all things music, and Greg, a Jack White super fan, have a lot to say on Jack White, including a plethora of insights and context into the creation of this music, the cultural impact of Jack White and his embedded philosophies, and the growth of self and artist.
I grew up in clashing cultures. My mom and step-dad both being Romanian while raising me in America. When it was time for the “sex talk” at 13 I was shocked by my mom's openness, as Romanian culture is not one defined by sex positivity as it is deeply entrenched in Orthodox Christian values. Reflecting on that talk we had as an adult, I find it incredible that she was able to unpack her own cultural restrictions and have an open and honest conversation with me about contraception, consent, gynecology appointments, and STDs. This is not to say America has a sex-positive culture- it doesn't, but it is to say that being able to communicate with your child about sexuality and sexual health has its benefits. That conversation prepared me to not be riddled with shame when I went on the pill, and not to be embarrassed when buying condoms, it all seemed very normal and proactive to me. This week Jeremiah and Julia explore the intersection of religion and sexuality in different cultural contexts as well as the strength in understanding and communicating values through their conversation with Scotney Young. Scotney Young is the Prevention and Outreach Manager at Doorway, a Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Organization. Here she develops and facilitates educational programming to promote healthy relationships and prevent intimate partner and sexual violence before it ever happens. Scotney is also the Co-Creator of You + Me = We, a queer sex education program for LGBTQ+ Youth. She is also the creator of Boundaries and Doorways a college consent education program. After earning a Masters' in Social Work from Boston University, she started teaching sex education to teenagers in a rural desert town in Peru as a Peace Core volunteer. Scotney also holds a post-graduate certificate in sexual health education from the University of Michigan. She's developed comprehensive sex ed curricula for youth of all ages and service providers, she is also one of only two sex educators certified by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Consolers, and Therapists in Virginia, and most recently she completed her Anti-Up Certification which focuses on applying various justice and anti-oppression frameworks to sexual health education. (07:35) “I just think young people are so eager to talk about these topics and learn about them, and I personally believe that sexual health and relationship education is really important because everyone should have the knowledge and tools they need to make informed decisions about their bodies, relationships, and futures” Scotney reflects on her time in Peru as a Peace Core volunteer and how she got into her field, she touches on a deeply important topic: that everyone deserves the correct knowledge to make informed decisions. Jeremiah notes how on this podcast conversations deconstructing a lot of incorrect knowledge or narrow perspectives towards sex and sex ed are usually the focus. Scotney then says “I loved being the person who could destigmatize and demystify these topics,” which is truly the goal with Sexvangelicals as well. Sex Education and Different Cultures (15:57) “You have to find ways to share information and tools that fit the context of the lives that they're living in” here Scotney talks about “adjust[ing] the content to adapt to their local cultures” when she worked in various countries. She touches on how in Peru she used biblical teachings to challenge ideas of sexual violence and street harassment and in Afghanistan she volunteered with a program that taught Afghan women how to swim and practice body autonomy through movement. (21:50) “Sexuality is a core part of the holistic being. It's a core part of being a fully actualized human that should be nurtured and tended to and isn't that the same for spirituality?” Scotney says after being asked about the relationship between the field of sexual therapy and religion. There tends to be judgment from the field towards religious groups or religious people, but in reality, it is important to value all parts of a person, including both religion and sexuality: “It would be hard to feel complete if any one of these core parts of our humanity is wrapped up and shamed” (24:08) “I like to distinguish between what is a true religious tenant versus what is a way the structure around the religion might be enforcing that might not even be a religious tenant” Julia talks about distinguishing between the religion in itself and the religious structure, because many times the ideology being pushed by the structure is not in line with the religion itself. (40:40) “When you focus on the behavior as the final outcome of what it is typically speaking when we do that in sex therapy we're inviting anxiety into the conversation” Jeremiah touches on how when we talk about behavior, for example, he mentions “pressuring ourselves to think about orgasm in this cultural norm instead of my [our] own meaning” can be damaging. It's important to find our own values and contexts for these behaviors and actions, and not try to align ourselves with the cultural idea of “orgasms,” or other behaviors, but to understand what it means to us. (41:45) “In what situation is telling someone don't do this with no extra context work? It doesn't work. It's like don't touch that red button and don't tell them why? What's gonna happen when they do it” Scotney gives this example when talking about the issue with abstinence-only education, which enforces a value without an explanation. This is a part of the larger conversation on how parents can impart values to their children in less rigid ways and offer room for conversation, not shame. It's important to have the “why,” because a “don't do this,” does not stand on its own.
My guest today is Mike Fahey an engineer, mixer, and producer from the great state of Maine. Michael went to college for mechanical engineering at the University Of Maine before switching over to an audio engineering degree at The New England School Of Communications (NESCOM). My first instrument was the trumpet in my elementary school band and he picked up the guitar at 11. In 2012, He landed an internship at Sputnik Sound after Vance Powell came to speak at NESCOM earlier that year about mixing for The Raconteurs' Consolers of the Lonely. He moved to Nashville that fall and after two months of interning was hired by Mitch Dane to be his assistant engineer. During that time, Sputnik moved to a new building in Berry Hill where he helped with construction for 7 months renovating the studio. In late 2014 Vance hired Michael as his assistant engineer and he has been with him ever since. In May 2020 Mike started his own studio, Starbird Sound and has been able to spend time on his production projects while working full time at Sputnik. Title: The ConsolersSong title: I Thank God That Things Are As Well As They AreSong by: The ConsolersPodcast vocals by: Gail NoblesKeyboard player by: Gail NoblesHow many of you remember the gospel group, The Consolers? They would sing a song that would go something like this....When I finished my conversation on the telephoneAfter talkin' to my mother way back home. When I asked her how she was fairin'These words I heard her sayI thank God that things are as well as they are...According to their biography by Ron Wynn, The Consolers were a Florida husband and wife duo that became extremely popular during the 50's and 60's with theirwith their song sermons and downhome stories of spiritual triumph. "Brother" Sullivan Pugh played a blues-tinged guitar and was lead vocalist, while his wife Iola provided harmony. At one point, only Rev. James Cleveland topped their sales figures on the gospel circuit. The Consolers' song, "I Thank God That Things Are As Well As They Are" is a song I remember my mother and father playing on the record player a lot when I was a child. It was a green labeled 45 record with a record label name written on it in great big old words NASHBORO. Back then, I never knew what the Consolers looked like, but hearing their voices, I pictured them just as I see them today. The Consolers had other great songs like1. Waiting For My Child2. After the Clouds Roll Away3. God Makes No Mistakes4. Want It Be Grand5. Some Sweet Day After Awhile6. Say a Prayer For Me.I'm Gail Nobles and you're listening to a show about The Gospel Greats. Today's topic is The Consolers and their song goes like this.......

From the songs Jack and Brendan exchanged to kick things off, up through the recording of the album and into a track-by-track review, we're pulling out the stops to celebrate the reunion of one of our favorite bands. We'll speak to you but won't speak softly - we'll talk to you and let you know all about Consolers of the Lonely! Welcome back to our analysis and review of the fan-favorite sophomore album by The Raconteurs. WOW, what a time to be a Racs fan! With a new album on the way, your home away from Nashville home is here to give you the down and dirty on the group's ambitious, thoughtful, spontaneous and razor sharp follow-up to 2006's Broken Boy Soldiers. Last episode we discussed the LP's release, the story behind the title and its elaborate packaging -- and this week we're talkin' the tunes. We'll go track by track and dissect this thing like a poor soul who trespassed against us, along with critical reception, some final thoughts from the band and our own personal ratings for the record. Plus, we're thrilled to welcome our very special guest Brandy St. John - stylist for the band and artistic contributor to much of the aesthetic that came to define this era for Jack White, Brendan Benson, LJ Lawrence and Patrick Keeler. In her over six years of working with Third Man, Brandy lent her skilled hand to key looks for The White Stripes, The Dead Weather, Jack White solo and the aforementioned Racs, and we're thrilled to present this first installment of our interview with her detailing it all! So while you're waiting for your Sunday driver, make a decision between just you and me and hold up them ear buds! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

For fans who were expecting the lightning rod power-pop of Broken Boy Soldiers, the second effort from Jack White, Brendan Benson, LJ Lawrence and Patrick Keeler may have come as a bit of a surprise. But this mix of country twang, vintage yarn-weavers and raucous jams quickly found a home as both a fan favorite and cult classic in the TMR world. This week we talk the record through from inception to release and analyze the elaborate album art and promotional stills that helped transition the Raconteurs from pop stars to old-timey medicine show hucksters. Plus we're joined by a couple of Ricky Skaggs super fans, Wayne and Elizabeth Kaminski, to talk about the bluegrass influence on the Raconteurs sound! So if you're lookin' for an accomplice, get ready to salute our solution to your podcasting needs! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Barnes, Dorothy Norwood, The Mighty Clouds of Joy and The Blind Boys of Alabama just to name a few. Great gospel legends that you hardly hear any more but when you hear their voices you realize some of them are still here! Her show was a vision given to her husband by God. However when he preceded to called her at work to inform her of this vision and that she needed to get on the radio and she laughed and hung up the phone. But to her surprise a tap came on her shoulder to remind her you must follow through and she did. With two calls to WYCB-AM 1340 first transferring to a voice mail she called again and got Mr. McCamey who greeted her with warm word and the questions of their vision for a show. Surprised she stated well….to introduce and present to others traditional gospel music and its history along with the interviewing of gospel legends. Her concern was that the only time you heard quartet and traditional music from legends were upon their passing. And she wanted to give them there flowers while they were living. These legends paved the way for all gospel artists out here today and she wants people to understand gospel music has come a mighty long way. As one legend stated we had to go in the back door to perform and exit the back door to leave yes we have come a mighty long way. Mr. McCamy asked for an email of her vision and not without her first and second draft being accidently erased on her computer while she was trying to finish. But God prevailed and her third draft to him was better than her first and second and it was sent that night. The following morning she received an email to come in and discuss her possibilities and the rest is history. With a little polishing of the shows name and Vania's renaming you got Ms. Vee. To God Be the Glory!! Vee. Country, folk, blues y rock con "Consolers of the lonely", segundo
Felipe y Diego nos hablan de Consolers of the Lonely, de The Raconteurs: segundo album de la banda de Jack White y Brendan Benson, que comentamos con la ayuda de Luis Fernando Quintero, haciendo obligada mención a temas como Salute your Solution, Old Enough o Carolina Drama.
For those unfamiliar the Raconteurs they are a band of amazing musicians who's lead singer also doubles as the front-man for a band called the White Stripes. On the music scene since 2005, I only recently became a big fan of theirs. A friend of mine lent me their latest album “Consolers of the Lonely” which I listened to almost exclusively for a solid couple of weeks. I followed that up with seeing their concert in Kansas City last April, which converted me into a devoted fan for life. If you get a chance to get out and see them on their current tour please take it and you will not be disappointed. Here's a recording of their October 28th, 2006 performance in Las Vegas, Nevada if you need some nudging to drop your hard earned cash on tickets. Thanks to Carrington Crawford for the taping duties! The Weepies - Antarctica - This husband/wife singer/songwriter duo will release their latest album, Hideaway, next week, but I've heard one song, and I like it quite a bit. I just love Deb Talen's voice, and I hope you will, too. She & Him - This Is Not A Test - She is actress Zooey Deschanel and he is singer/songwriter M. Ward. Together, they create a magical step back into sixties pop and country (lots more magic than Zooey's appearance in Tin Man last year.) Sarah Mac Band - Open Fire - When I first heard the song on my Paste sampler, I thought it was Lisa Loeb making some sort of comeback. Not so. The Raconteurs - Hold Up - Jack White's side project released a follow-up to their fab debut, Broken Boy Soldiers, last month. I just got around to cracking it open, and it's a gem. Consolers of The Lonely reminds me just how much I miss blues-based rock bands and how thankful I am that some of the younger guys won't give up on it. R.E.M. - Living Well Is The Best Revenge - Accelerate is the best R.E.M. release since Automatic For The People. Yeah, it was a long dry spell, wasn't it? This album rocks!
