A funny podcast about memorable music hosted by Rick Storer and Nick Malizia
End of the month? New episode of Spin Doctors. We'll be getting more frequent again soon, so thanks for bearing with us during these last few monthly eps. We got a unique one for you this month, folks. Previous guest Corey Jernigan steps in for Nick as co-host and he brought a guest along with him. Comedian, poker player, and former Converse spokesperson Matty Goldberg joins us and we DON'T talk about him working with Dwayne Wade, sorry. We DO talk about the 1987 album from The Replacements, "Pleased to Meet Me" and how it connected Matty and his daddy and inspired literally every other piece of music in the process. And what would an episode of Spin Doctors be without plenty of tangents into things like The Great Corey and Rick Road Trip, the ethics of afterlife servitude, and the questionable popularity of GG Allin. The audio isn't quiiiiiiite as good as usual, but this episode is still super fun, so stick around! Thanks to Pale Blue Dot for our theme For You... We're going the distance, folks. This episode has a short skirt and a long jacket and a whoooooole bakery back there, because this week we out here double-cheeked up with some CAKE. Spoiler alert, that's not the type of cake they're named after. Michael Zalusky is back to help handle hosting duties, and we have producer, rapper, podcaster, and jack-of-several-trades Awesome Ty on the show to help us explore the album Prolonging the Magic. I won't prolong this description, but know that we cover such topics as: dogs with buttons, what is art?, and the meaning of dude ranch, all in less than 2 hours! We have a super special episode for you this time, folks. Nick is out of town and instead of going it solo again, Rick invited a co-host: friend of the show and past guest Michael Zalusky! It's a reunion of the Avast! Ye Scoundrel hosts and so of course it immediately goes off the rails. We have comedian and podcaster Rivers Langley on the show discussing the weirdest album we've ever done: Ween's Chocolate and Cheese. We go deep in on this one, people, but we still make time for brand new segments Tomato Talk, Mushroom Moment, and Hooray for Hollywood, and to discuss the Chef Aid South Park album. Strap in for this one! Thanks to Pale Blue Dot for our theme For You... Awaken, my listeners! We're back with another installment of Spin Doctors (which I promise will start being more regular again soon) with a guest we've been wanting for a while, the incomparable SLOcal comedian Kelsie Rae! On this episode we answer the hard hitting questions like: which is the silliest animal? Did Kelsie have the best band name of all time? What memories does Pokemon GO unlock? Join us, won't you, as we ponder these questions and more on our exploration of Childish Gambino's third album, "Awaken, My Love!" And if you know Childish Gambino, then you KNOW we did the name generator. Bonus: listen towards the end of the episode for when Rick's allergies really kick in! BING BONG! Spin ya life! Hi everyone, and welcome to the newest episode of Spin Doctors. Come on in and make yourself comfortable and warm, cause it's about to get rainy. We have a first for this episode, as our guest, the hilarious Jacob Blaeser, chose an album we've already done! So we made him change it. Look, I don't make the rules. Well, I do, but still. I'm glad we changed it, because this album ROCKS. Pearl Jam's seminal (haha) album, Ten, is a cornerstone of rock and roll history, and we have a blast going through it. From the Big Game halftime show, to how glue is made, to the science behind pop music, this episode has it all! #CatchMeJoking Thanks to Pale Blue Dot for our theme For You... Ok, cards on the table, this one was recorded WAY after the last episode, but Rick had COVID and there's a lot going on. Either way, we're back with a very special part 2 of our countdown of Rolling Stone Magazine's Top 20 Songs of All Time. We're really gettin' into our stride on this one, with plenty of bird and hair talk, which we know is why you listen. These top 10 songs are undeniably great, but are they the greatest of all time? Only a thorough investigation by the Spin Daddies can tell, on this week's thrilling finale! Bang! Zow! Zot! Thanks to Pale Blue Dot for our theme For You... A cold wind blows snow across a twilit field. A hooded figure appears in the distance, carrying a lantern and using a walking stick. It approaches. The hood slowly falls back to reveal an ancient face, weathered by time, wizened almost beyond recognition. But then you see it. Could it be? A relic from a forgotten past? It is. It's the Spin Doctors. And WEEEEEE'RE BACK, BABY! Did you miss us? I missed us. It's 2022 and Season 2 of the Spin Doctors is here with a very special episode. Rolling Stone Magazine unleashed a Top 500 Songs of All Time list, and we thought 500 was too many, so we're doing the top 20. Thanks for listening and hanging in there during the crazy long hiatus! This episode is completely powered by sheer force of will, and Rick was definitely on the fence about whether it was good, so let us know if it is.
I....AM....SPIN DOCTORRRRRR. Get it? Like the song from the album we're doing this week? One of the most influential heavy metal albums of all time, Black Sabbath's Paranoid paved the way for hundreds of long-haired, pentagram wearing, devil-horn throwing, angsty teenagers to piss their parents off. And who better to join us on this journey to the dark side than our good friend, comedian Bob Powers. Bob helps walk us through our most familiar album yet, and Rick gets steadily drunker throughout the recording, see if you can tell! And of course it's becoming the holiday season, so we talk Christmas, the rise and fall of fax machines (which we definitely confused with copiers, oops), which lamp is best to be beaten to death with, and we figure out what makes a good cover song. Yay holidays! Thanks to Pale Blue Dot for our theme For You... Paranoid is © Black Sabbath and Warner Bros. and Vertigo available under CC BY-NC 2.5 Follow us on IG and Twitter @spindocpod Questions? Don't WORRY. We're back! And we have another fantastic episode for you, we didn't want to make you WORRY. The doctors are in as we take a clinical look at the album of the week, Jeff Rosenstock's WORRY. We are joined by extra funny boy Mike Wooten, and really reminisce hard about the 90s. This album is great, this episode is great, Mike is great, we're great, and don't WORRY., you're great too. We're talkin' soaps, the educational hurdles of being emo, fashion, and a whole lot more on this brand spankin' new episode of Spin Doctors! Thanks to Pale Blue Dot for our theme For You... Well, well, well. Look who it is. The listener. We've been expecting you. We have a great episode for you this week, as our buddy and fellow podcaster Michael Booth stops by and we get completely friggin silly. From Olympic board games to Hot Rod quotes, Bocce ball to the best ways to die, this one's got it all, folks. Plus, as always, an album! And this week's album is Real Talk, the debut record from pop punk band Man Overboard. This was the last episode recorded before the mini hiatus in October and it was a real goofy one, but also very heartfelt, so please enjoy it and share it with your friends, THANKSSSSS! Oh hi, didn't hear you come in. Welcome, have a seat won't you? We've gathered all your friends here today because we love and care about you. And one of those friends is Rick, and another one of them is Nick, and another one is our guest this week, Ron Swallow. Host of The Greatest Pod, Ron wants to give you a gift to show you how important and special you are. And that gift is White Zombie's La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Volume One. This album is a groovy horror metal fueled carnival ride and it is so much fun. We also debate which superheroes the cast of Tiger King would be, everyone acknowledges that Rick is the Main Character, and we delve into the wild wild world of professional rollerblading. Brushing the cobwebs off our eyes and blowing the dust from our fingertips, the Spin Docs rise from hiatus like that very vampire of lore himself, the mysterious Count Dracula! Welcome back to the show folks, we have a great one for you. Comedian extraordinaire Bruce Gray is on this week's episode to talk about the album that got him through his early comedy career, Neil Young's Harvest. We also explore the history of Central California bullying, discover Iraqi drifting, and watch James Taylor roast the crap out of some college kids along the way. Couldn't be happier to have Nick back in studio this week as we delve into Rick's personal blind spot, old school hip hop. Comedian and rap aficionado Ato Diaba Walker swings by the show to help educate us about one of rap's most influential groups, Outkast, and their 1996 album ATLiens. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, ATLiens (or AT-Liens) is a time capsule of mid 90s hip hop. Pronounce it any way you want, this album is a chill banger full of buttery flows and great beats, and is top to bottom an entire dang mood. Ato also divulges his microdosing schedule, Rick recounts a time he almost died on a ride, and we pay homage to the discman. Rick was completely out of his element here, so thank the gods Nick is back for this episode of Spin Doctors! Thanks to Pale Blue Dot for our theme For You... The Spin of Doc and roll is still beating, baby! We are back this week to talk about an absolute CLASSIC. Fantastic comedian Aivy Cordova shares her love of the coolest guy in the 1980s, Huey Lewis, and his 1983 smash hit album Sports. We literally recorded this episode two days before its release, so it is fresh, fresh, fresh (and also a little late, sorry). Everybody remembers at least one song from this album, but not everyone listened to it while driving home from the police station with their parents. Oooh, foreshadowing! Join us as we talk Aivy's memories of this album, along with pondering the mystery of the double bathtub, Nick's magical backup plan, and the tiniest cover band around, all on this week's super fun episode of Spin Doctors! In a Spin Doctors first, Nick isn't here for this episode!! We got Rick holding down hosting duties as comedian friend Sarah Giambruno introduces him to an amazing band called Why? and their equally amazing album Alopecia. It feels different with no Mr. Malodeon this episode, but he'll be back next week with that sweet, mellow mood you crave. But in the meantime, check out Sarah and Rick's conversation, where they talk about their inherent narcissism, compare tattoos, and figure out the perfect food truck idea. Sarah also teaches Rick about the insanity that is 90 Day Fiance, and much much more on this very fun episode of Spin Doctors! Oh, and the song Rick was thinking of was The Police's Every Breath You Take. You'll see what we mean. Thanks to Pale Blue Dot for our theme For You... You ever hear of a band for a long time, and never actually listen to them, and somehow avoid hearing literally one note of any of their music, and develop an idea of them, and then one day you hear them and it's totally different than what you thought and completely blows your mind and you wonder how you never heard them before? Welcome to my brain, when this week's guest, bay area staple Mean Dave, dropped by to show us the album Bullhead by Melvins. This record is sludgey, chunky, and weird, and so are we, so it just fits. We also talk backyard wrestling, take a deep dive into horror movies, and discuss the horrors of chain link fences, and Dave proves he really knows his Melvins. What's up, gamers! This week we are joined by our good buddy Brian Moore, AKA BMo, to properly honor a recently fallen MC. DMX was a controversial figure, for sure, but there's no controversy over how good this album is. It's Dark and Hell is Hot is a seminal hip hop album that cemented DMX's name as a rap legend. Strangely, that name is Earl. This is another fun, loose episode with friends as we discuss the things that various happen when you take "ibuprofen", figure out the perfect coffee table book, and remember the struggles of the era before streaming. We also drop possibly the most suprising piece of trivia ever. Stop, drop, shut em down and open up your ears for this week's episode of Spin Doctors! Thanks to Pale Blue Dot for our theme For You... Look. No one expected this to ever happen. This band has been a punchline on the show for 20 episodes. But here we are. Comedian Nate Spears pops onto the show this week to have us all bask in the aural glory (glaury?) that is Limp Bizkit's Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water. As much of a joke as LB is, we end up having an absolute blast recording this episode, as we get a little stoned and talk about acronyms, dissect the Freudian nature of modern adult cinema, and generally be much too rude for a polite christian music podcast. Rrrrrrriiiiiing! That's the bell that says get back to class, kids. This week the Spin Docs are doing something special, and taking you back to the best (worst) four years of your life: high school! Most of us went there, and we all used music to help get through it. The good times, the bad times, and everything in between, music was there. We posted a question on our Facebook page asking listeners to submit their favorite albums from their high school years, and boy did you! We collected 20 albums that you guys suggested, and picked a song from each one, and made a dang show out of it! In addition we talk more things from the past, make the best batman movie ever, and figure out the beef between The Who all on this week's special episode of Spin Doctors! Welcome back to the Spin Doctors! This week we have special guest, comedian Danielle Arce, an Arizonian transplant in California who has brought a little piece of the desert with her to the show. The Format, FUN. vocalist Nate Ruess's first successful band, and their debut album, Interventions + Lullabies. And isn't that ironic, because this episode is all sorts of FUN. We get into a hot debate about names that will die out, we discuss the merits of donuts, and we delve into our deepest nightmares, all while bringing you track after track of good ol' Arizona indie music. A day late, but a dollar...well still a dollar short. This week's episode may be late, but that just means we put extra time into making it a good one, which it definitely is. Comedian buddy Sean Reilly stops by the podcast to share his thoughts on a very obscure and little known album, Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon. We dive into Sean's first memory of the band as well as make our own fantasy supergroup with some very specific rules. We also talk a lot of tik tok and figure out why Nick doesn't like Old Gregg. We ain't messing around this episode as we get right to finishing this list: albums 20-1. Part 1 had some real out there stuff, and part 2 brings it back home with a bunch of stone cold classics, and the kind of incisive commentary you've come to expect from us, including classics like "Wow!" and "This is good!" Woah bro, it's time for some dank nugs and a heady jam sesh, because it's 4/20, dudes! The national holiday of people with nothing else to do, 4/20 is a nice excuse to put on some tunes, chill out, and get into the music. "But what music?" you ask. Well, don't worry. Rolling Stone magazine printed an article called The 40 Greatest Stoner Albums, and the doctors are here to take you on a medicinal journey through all 40. But there's no way to fit that all into one episode, so we're going big: TWO episodes. This is part one, albums 40-21, and it's a lot of dumb, high fun. A Day To Remember's Homesick is the album of the week, and it's a nice heavy one, and could only be brought to us by the heavyweight champ of espionage, comedian Ernie Romero. Spinning! Doctoring! Harps! It's all here on this episode of Spin Doctors. This week Professional Rapper Mikey Boohyah drops in with his favorite album: Oliver Hart's The Many Faces of Oliver Hart. Don't be distracted by Mikey's fish tank and trust me, Nick's audio gets better in the next few episodes. Thanks to Pale Blue Dot for our theme For You... We're back! Our first episode with a guest is here, and it's a good one. The one and only, bay area favorite, producer, comedian, and all around good boy Ruben Escobedo III drops by the podcast to chat about an album very close to his heart and his front bottom. This week's album is Talon of the Hawk by The Front Bottoms. Thanks to Pale Blue Dot for our theme For You... Welcome to the first episode of Spin Doctors! We start the series off off with a solo, well, I guess duo, episode featuring the Spin Doctors: Rick Storer (@whosrickstorer) and Nick Malizia (@nick.malizia). This week's album is the 1999 Smash hit Americana, by The Offspring. Get it, because they also have an album called Smash? You get it. Thanks to Pale Blue Dot for our theme For You...
