The 1970s era cool just wafted off of Dave Parker, the gigantic Pirates slugger who was one of the best, if not THE BEST players in baseball in the last half of that decade. Parker's persona, his play, and his essence were all larger than life and are still clear almost 50 years later. That bigness, however, led to problems later in his career, both on and off the field, but ultimately set up a fine career denoument as a productive DH, and a Hall of Fame induction scheduled for later this month. Commemorating the passing of the great Cobra, Mike and Bill look back at a pretty impressive, though flawed, career and person.  Plus, happy birthday to Cy Blanton and Gene Alley! And farewell to Frank Johnson and Vic Harris.

Episode 303 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're back on the diamond discussing Dave Parker. An ultimate five-tool player in baseball, the incredibly athletic Parker (6'5” 230 lbs.) might have opted a career in football had a knee injury in high school not forced him off the gridiron.Parker rose through the minor league system of the Pittsburgh Pirates during the early 1970s, and then proceeded to become one of MLB's best players by the end of the decade.Overall, MLB's most brash and dominant player won back-to-back batting titles in 1977 and 1978, won three straight Gold Gloves from 1977-1979, won the NL MVP in 1978 and helped the “We Are Family” Pirates win the World Series in 1979!Sadly, the early 1980s were a disaster for “The Cobra” in Pittsburgh due to injuries, his team declining and falling out of favor with the media and fans due to his large contract. Parker encountered even more controversy after he testified in the “Pittsburgh Drug Trials,” and many believed his MLB career was finished by 1984.However, he returned to Cincinnati for the 1984 season and experienced a career Renaissance for his hometown Reds. The Right fielder made two All-Star teams for Cincinnati during his four seasons with the team, won two Silver Sluggers and provided veteran leadership for a talented franchise littered with young players who eventually won a World Series in 1990.Parker won his second World Series title in 1989 with the Oakland A's, and even made the All-Star team and won a Silver Slugger with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1990!Sadly, Parker's Hall of Fame candidacy took a hit due to the “Pittsburgh Drug Trials” after his career ended. Despite his dominance, many sportswriters refused to recognize his greatness related to his brash personality and past drug use when it came to a spot in Cooperstown. Though he was finally elected to the Hall of Fame by the Classic Baseball Era Committee in 2025, Parker passed away from Parkinson's 29 days before his induction. Hour 1 The Mets suffered a devastating sweep by the Pirates, prompting Boomer to remark on the team's poor performance and the ineffectiveness of a players-only meeting and Carlos Mendoza's ejection. Given the high payroll and dismal run production, Boomer stressed the need for accountability, while Jerry's update highlighted the Mets' struggles and included sound bites from Mendoza, Lindor, and Frankie Montas, alongside news of the Yankees' victory over the A's. Separately, the Knicks are reportedly considering Dawn Staley as a head coach, a prospect Gio dismissed as unlikely, and Malik Beasley is under federal investigation for unusual betting activity in the 2023-24 season. Hour 2 LeBron James has opted into his Lakers contract, but his agent Rich Paul's statement suggests a desire for a trade, possibly campaigning for Giannis to join the Lakers. This has led to speculation about what the Knicks would offer for LeBron, with one caller even suggesting he become a player/coach. In other news, Aaron Judge hit two homers as the Yankees beat the A's, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. had a home run and a triple. The Mets suffered their most lopsided series defeat in history. As NBA free agency begins, LeBron's future is a hot topic, while callers debated the Mets bringing back Syndergaard and deGrom, and if LeBron would force Bronny on the Knicks if he joined. Hour 3 Following former MLB player Dave Parker's passing this weekend, which coincided with the Mets' series in Pittsburgh, Gio reminisced about classic sports photography and its decline due to the internet, while Boomer claimed to have cried over an Islanders draft pick story, which Gio doubted. Half way home, Atlanta Braves still struggling to build momentum

The Atlanta Braves passed the mathematical halfway point over the weekend, but it was in the midst of yet another winnable series slipping through their collective fingers. Grant McAuley discusses the biggest stories and headlines from the week that was for the Braves, a week that saw them lose the momentum they'd worked so hard to build with head-to-head success against the formerly first place New York Mets by losing series to the Miami Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies. The offensive woes continue to plague the club, while both the starting rotation and bullpen are under more stress than ever to keep the Braves in games. Now seven games under .500 and staring at major deficits in both the division and Wild Card races, the Braves will attempt to make the most of their final two weeks before the All-Star break as they face the Los Angeles Angles, Baltimore Orioles, Athletics, and St. Louis Cardinals over the next 12 games. That stretch could ultimately determine what Atlanta's strategy will be for the trade deadline, because failing to win consistently may mean there's no point in bringing in reinforcements this season. Brad Rowland of Hammer Territory joins the show to discuss the Braves at the halfway marker, the loss of Chris Sale, the lost seasons thus far for Michael Harris and Ozzie Albies, and what needs to happen in July to allow Atlanta to pull the nose up on its season. Hear that discussion beginning at 29:20. In the trip around the big leagues, we cover the loss of Dave Parker, the field for the Home Run Derby, Ketel Marte's unfortunate trip to Chicago, and hear the voice of the Pitchcom device courtesy of SNY. And Sam Blum of The Athletic joins to preview the Angels and Braves series that begins on Tuesday. Hear that at 57:58. From The Diamond airs live on 92-9 The Game in Atlanta on Sundays throughout baseball season. You can also subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Every episode of the show and more great Braves coverage is available at FromTheDiamond.com.
