The strongest man in the world 50 years ago was Vasily Alekseyev of the Soviet Union and there he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated on April 14th, 1975. The question is… was he a nice guy? Apparently the answer was no. Because also in that issue was the 2nd part of a 4 part series from the book, “Nice Guys Finish Last,” from former player and Hall of Fame manager, Leo Durocher. The “Lip” was a heckuva ballplayer, spanning 20 years with the Yankees, Reds, Cardinals and Brooklyn Dodgers from 1925-1945. A 3-time All-Star, and 4-time World Series champion, Durocher ended his playing days as a player/manager in Brooklyn and would go on to retire as the 5th winningest skipper in MLB history. Starting in 1939 with the Dodgers and then spending 8 more years with the Nw York Giants from 1948-1955, Durocher won his only World Series as a manager when Willie Mays and the Giants swept the Cleveland Indians in 1954. The next year was his last in New York and he wouldn't manage again until the Cubs hired him in 1966. Chicago was 59-103 in his first season guiding the team but didn't have a losing season in the remainder of his 5+ seasons at the helm. He would finish his Hall of Fame managerial career in Houston with another winning season in 1973. On that '73 teams was a young lefty who started 40 games for the Astros, completing 12 of them and amassing 279 innings pitched. Jerry Reuss was just 23 years old when he played for Durocher and the two had an adventurous time together with Durocher riding his young stud as often as he could, and Reuss often questioning the tactics of the veteran manager. It was a memorable season in Houston for the southpaw who would go on to win 220 games in his 22 years in the bigs. Reuss tells us how he pranked Dave Parker when he and The Cobra met up with Muhammad Ali in an elevator while playing for the Pirates. He takes us to Candlestick Park on a warm June night in 1980 when he no-hit the Giants, and he recounts the time Ron Cey was beaned in the head by a Goose Gossage fastball in the '81 world Series. But more than anything we talk to Reuss about what was it like for a kid born in 1950 to play for a manager who had been managing in the majors for 23 years by the time their paths crossed in the Lone Star state. It was a bumpy ride to say the least. Reuss tells us that much of it was his fault and that he and Durocher didn't see eye-to-eye most of the time. He goes on to tell us that years later they met up in the office of another Dodgers manager, Tommy Lasorda, and both admitted they could have handled things differently. Reuss and The Lip patched things up and shortly thereafter, Durocher passed away.  One of the greatest managers in baseball history was a mercurial and difficult man who never finished last in his 24 years as a manager. Was it because he was a Hall of Fame manager or because only Nice Guys Finish Last? In Durocher's case… probably a little of both. Listen, download, subscribe and review the Past Our Prime podcast. What's the worst thing you ever saw at a sports game? Someone throw a battery at a Make-a-Wish kid? Sure, if you're from Philly, but what if you were from California. On today's episode: we'll talk about zombies and crucifictions and collapsing buildings before we even get into it; we're going to watch the shortest baseball game of all time; and we're going to cut off one of your limbs in one of the more claustrophobic ways possible. And if you were listening on Patreon… you would hear of one of the most extreme, but very different kind of arm-severing examples of self-rescue in history; the story of a must-have, closed-casket-funeral-friendly rescue device and the absolutely brutal, very public early use of it; and a really dirty, smutty explanation how earthquakes work.By popular request, we present The Loma Prieta Earthquake Disaster of 1989! So, we'll end up talking about my history with zombies and a popular crucifixion and a slowly collapsing building - two of three events set in San Francisco itself – all before we settle in to watch the shortest baseball game of all time. Not just that, we're actually going to (for the first time ever) interrupt a safety segment with a Patreon-exclusive retelling of the shockingly horrific and awful just-kill-me-now-already story of Aron Ralston. You might remember him as the guy who chewed his arm off after an 800 pound boulder pinned him to a canyon wall in Utah. He didn't actually chew his arm off though. What he did was at least a thousand times worse. We'll also do a little retelling of the great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Can't not do a San Francisco Earthquake disaster without at least bringing it up.Celebrity guest appearances include world famous author and travel enthusiast, Bill Bryson; crucified magician and Jesus' friend, Saint Andrew; real estate suckers Joe Montana and Kevin Durant; all four Beatles; sports broadcasters, Al Michaels and Tim McCarver; newscaster, Ted Koppel; crosstown World Series players Dave Stewart, Mike Moore, Jose Canseco, Dave Parker and Terry Kennedy. All older episodes can be found on any of your favorite channelsApple : https://tinyurl.com/5fnbumdw Spotify : https://tinyurl.com/73tb3uuw IHeartRadio : https://tinyurl.com/vwczpv5j Podchaser : https://tinyurl.com/263kda6w Stitcher : https://tinyurl.com/mcyxt6vw Google : https://tinyurl.com/3fjfxatt Spreaker : https://tinyurl.com/fm5y22su Podchaser : https://tinyurl.com/263kda6w RadioPublic : https://tinyurl.com/w67b4kec PocketCasts. : https://pca.st/ef1165v3 CastBox : https://tinyurl.com/4xjpptdr Breaker. : https://tinyurl.com/4cbpfayt Deezer. : https://tinyurl.com/5nmexvwt Follow us on the socials for moreFacebook : www.facebook.com/doomsdaypodcast Instagram : www.instagram.com/doomsdaypodcast Twitter : www.twitter.com/doomsdaypodcastTikTok:  www.tiktok.com/@doomsday.the.podcastIf you like the idea of your podcast hosts wearing more than duct tape and bits of old Halloween costumes for clothes and can spare a buck or two, you can now buy me a coffee atwww.buymeacoffee.com/doomsday or join the patreon at www.funeralkazoo.com/doomsday

Entrepreneurship can feel like a lonely grind, but it doesn't have to be. Dave Parker, the CEO of the Entrepreneurs' Organization, knows firsthand what it takes to build, scale, and sometimes close a business. In this episode, he joins Alex Raymond to share what separates successful founders from those who get stuck—breaking down product-market fit, the power of timing, and why self-awareness matters more than most people think.   A key takeaway? Forum, EO's peer-driven support system, offers entrepreneurs a space to be real about the highs and lows without the noise of unsolicited advice. Dave opens up about his own mental health journey and why having the right people around you can make or break your ability to keep going. He also challenges the idea of failing fast, arguing that knowing when to walk away is just as important as knowing when to push through.   For founders navigating uncertainty, this episode is a reminder that resilience isn't just about grinding harder, but about making better decisions, leaning on the right community, and staying clear-eyed about what actually works.   Episode Breakdown: 00:00 Introduction 03:31 Product-Market Fit 05:01 Five Components of Product-Market Fit 10:20 Timeless Advice from Mentors 15:09 Timing and Market Conditions 18:09 Importance of Clear Communication 20:09 Solving Complex Problems 25:00 EO's Mission and Growth Goals 28:48 Personal Mission and Vision 30:30 Entrepreneurship is Lonely but Doesn't Have to Be 34:20 Dealing with Burnout and Mental Health 38:00 Importance of Forum in EO 40:02 Self-Awareness as a Key Mindset Shift   Links Connect with Dave Parker:  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daveparker/ Website: https://eonetwork.org/   Connect with Alex Raymond: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/afraymond/ Website: https://amplifyam.com/ HiveCast.fm is a proud sponsor of The Conscious Entrepreneur Podcast. Is it easier to get 400 baseball writers to all agree on who is a Hall of Famer or 30 Major League Baseball owners to agree on ways to address skyrocketing payroll disparity? That's the question that begins a brand new episode of the Best Podcast in Baseball. Esteemed baseball writer Tyler Kepner, of The Athletic and formerly with the New York Times, joins host Derrick Goold to discuss Ichiro Suzuki and his peers in the National Baseball Hall of Fame's Class of 2025. It's a robust class that includes a top left-handed starter CC Sabathia who got elected on his first ballot and a top left-handed reliever Billy Wagner who got elected on his final ballot. The class also includes Dick Allen and Dave Parker to further reveal the many numerous routes available to players to reach induction in Cooperstown. There is the expressway that Suzuki takes with near unanimous support. There is the state two-lane highway that will likely welcome switc-hitter Carlos Beltran to Cooperstown in 2026, and then there's the country roads that Wagner had to drive to ultimately reach immortality. All of which brings us to the crossroads currently facing baseball. With the Dodgers spending freely and collecting all of the talent, is the only way deep into October through Los Angeles? The two baseball writers discuss the widening gap in the game and explore one reason for the dramatic change (hint: shrinking small- and mid-market television revenues) -- and whether there will be a correction in a few years. The Best Podcast in Baseball, sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold. It appears weekly wherever you subscribe or listen to podcasts and is part of the newspaper's Constant Cardinals Coverage.

2025 BBWAA HOF Ballot Happy New Year! It's once again time to talk about the Hall of Fame, this time the writers' ballot. There are plenty of worthy candidates returning to the ballot, and two standout first year candidates to watch. Japanese icon Ichiro Suzuki is a lock for induction this year. Although he didn't debut until he was 27, the spry savant amassed over 3,000 hits, 1,400 runs, 10 All-Stars and Gold Gloves, not to mention two batting titles, a Rookie of the Year, and a MVP. He also holds the single season hit record, with 262 in the 2004 season. Although not the first Japanese player in MLB, his smashing success paved the way for other Japanese stars such as Hideki Matsui, Yu Darvish, and Shohei Ohtani. The only question about Ichiro is whether or not he'll be unanimous. Don't sleep on ace lefty C.C. Sabathia's chances on his debut ballot. As one of just three left handed pitchers with 3,000 strikeouts (Steve Carlton and Randy Johnson the other two), Sabathia was the definition of a workhorse. Add in 250 wins, a Cy Young, a World Series, and an ALCS MVP, and you've got a Hall of Famer, especially in this era. Among the other first-year candidates, there are a few who could survive the 5% threshold to remain on ballot for another year. Félix Hernández was one of the most dominant starters in baseball from 2007 - 2015, but that might not be enough for the writers. Dustin Pedroia and Ian Kinsler were both excellent second basemen that frankly lack the longevity needed for enshrinement, but are certainly worthy cases to discuss, particularly on the same ballot as sabermetric darling Chase Utley. Russell Martin and Brian McCann come up short in the traditional counting stats that writers demand from catchers, but their advanced framing metrics put them in similar ranks as Joe Mauer, Buster Posey, and Yadier Molina. Of the returning candidates, Billy Wagner came up just short last year (73.8%), and he will need a push to get over in his final year on the ballot. In his second to last year, Andruw Jones appears to be stalling around 60% of the vote, not far off from induction, but not close enough to be confident he'll make it this year or the next. Carlos Beltrán and Chase Utley appear to be on track for induction in a few years time, though they'll need to continue their growth. AROD, ManRam, and Andy Pettitte would be in the Hall if not for PEDs, and they're not getting in anytime soon. How many will join Dick Allen and Dave Parker for a July celebration? On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey reacts to the Steelers' NFL Week 14 victory against the Cleveland Browns at Acrisure Stadium. Specifically, he explains why coach Mike Tomlin's get-right instead of get-even message ahead of the battle with the AFC North rival was the right one as critical matchups with the Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs loom over the last month of the regular season. And why Russell Wilson is the perfect QB to help maintain that even keel amid the injury to key receiver George Pickens. Later, Jason offers thoughts on former Pirates star Dave Parker and Wampum, Pa., native Dick Allen getting elected to the baseball Hall of Fame.

Penn State has earned the number six seed in the College Football playoff and will host 11th seeded SMU on December 21st at Beaver Stadium. More delays are in store for motorists in the Harrisburg area this week as work along Interstate 83 continues. Native brook trout in the upper Delaware River draw anglers from across the globe. More than $3 million dollars will help conserve trout streams in the mountainous areas of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. It's the first tri-state initiative of its kind in the Delaware River watershed.   Four Christmas tree farms in Pennsylvania are taking part in the annual Trees for Troops program, which runs through today. Former Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Dave Parker and former Philadelphia Phillies star Dick Allen have been elected to baseball's Hall of Fame by the classic era committee.  Philadelphia's Saquon Barkley has broken Harrisburg native LeSean McCoy's Eagles franchise record for rushing yards in a season in a 22-16 win over Carolina. Pittsburgh's Russell Wilson threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns as the  Steelers pulled away from the mistake-prone Cleveland Browns 27-14.  When someone is diagnosed with cancer, it often means they'll need to undergo treatment. That can involve chemotherapy, surgery, radiation and other therapies.  These treatments mean more people are surviving cancer than ever before. Researchers at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia are studying the long-term effects they have on cancer survivors years after their initial diagnosis.  Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Send us a textHow about the #Giants finally getting their man in Willy Adames. But it was a big price to pay. Clay Holmes to the #mets as a starter? Luis Severino to Sacramento is a big deal for the franchise formerly known as the #athletics who seem like they will eventually move to Vegas. Frankie Montas to the Mets was the reason Severino headed west. But still no word on Juan Soto but we think it will happen this week. Classic Era baseball committee came up with Dick Allen and Dave Parker but we thought Luis Tiant might make it and that all 8 candidates were worthy - well at least 7 of them. How about the Golden at-bat? Is this #MLB fan trolling? Commissioner Rob Manfred knew he'd be raked over the coals. But did it anyway. Why? It's a terrible idea and in no way makes #baseball better. HOFer Mickey Mantle is the greatest switch hitter of all time. End of story. HOFer Eddie Murray was the other switch hitter that has 500 career (504) home runs. Switch hitting is happening less frequently as the benefits are more questionable than ever. Intro & Outro music this season courtesy of Mercury Maid! A longtime fan favorite, his counting stats, hardware, and championships bode well for his Hall of Fame case as does the sentimental tug of time. But modern advanced statistics aren't as kind to Parker's case, and his HOF discussion truly requires a complex analysis of his stats, hardware, and fame factor.
