Well England have fallen at the first three hurdles and are 3-0 down with two Tests to go. So maybe this podcast can be filed away and listened to in four years time. Except that Goughie speaks to former South Africa coach Mickey Arthur who talks about why losing in Australia helped them get into a position to win. Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn explains why every player needs to play their part to achieve success and Editor of the Wisden Almanack and Daily Mail cricket writer Lawrence Booth, speaking before a ball had been bowled, is scarily accurate about what he thought might end up happening.Either way listen and enjoy as Goughie tries to find out what England can learn from opposing teams who've gone to Australia and been successful. For more cricket content head over to the talkSPORT Cricket YouTube Channel and hit subscribe. In this LEGEND/ICON episode we chat with the greatest quick bowler of all-time. South Africa's leading test wicket taker and a man with the best strike rate of anyone to have taken over 300 test wickets!!! DALE STEYN!!! It was awesome chatting with Dale and we could have chatted for hours but we thought we better not push our luck (we will try and get him on the podcast again)! His knowledge is outstanding and you can see why he has been such a force in both franchise and test cricket. More impressive than his knowledge was his enthusiasm which had us on the edge of our seats and desperate to get bowling! This episode is really worth watching on YouTube if you can as you will feel like Dale is with you getting you pumped up! We start with some quickfire questions as always to get an insight into Dales philosophy and what he likes. It was really interesting to hear how he tried to integrate other successful bowlers such as Brett Lee, Shoaib Akhtar and Shaun Pollock into his own action creating a really unique style. We also had to talk about Dales intimidating on field persona! We hope you enjoy the podcast as much as we enjoyed recording it. If this is the case please leave us a 5* review and share it with someone you think will benefit! Also subscribe and follow us on our social media platforms! In this episode of the show, Binksy, Baldy, Stu and Raj preview the IPL tournament, covering Mumbai, Punjab, Rajasthan, RCB and Sunrisers Hyderabad.Wall-to-wall T20 cricket is about to begin, with the IPL followed by the T20 World Cup and in this episode (part 2 of 2) we focus on five teams, discussing squad news, why each team can win, potential weaknesses, key players and predicted finishing order. We also give our overall tournament predictions, including semi-finalists, champions and the winners of the purple and orange caps.Teams covered are:Mumbai Indians: Mumbai have arguably the best batting lineup in the competition, stacked with local talent. There's the return of Hardik Pandya and what that might mean for the harmony of the side with him taking the captaincy from Rohit Sharma, plus a few question marks about their spinners - but does that even matter when Jasprit Bumrah is in your side?Punjab Kings: There's an English flavour to this squad, with Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Chris Woakes and Sam Curran all set to feature during the tournament. Add the likes of Arshdeep Singh, Kagiso Rabada and Harshal Patel to that and the bowling attack looks solid, but can Shikhar Dhawan and co score enough runs to take them to the playoffs?Rajasthan Royals: T20 opening partnerships don't get much better than Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler, and the addition of Shane Bond to the coaching staff has the New Zealanders excited for 2024. There's great spin depth, batting firepower and lovely Trent Boult, but where are the allrounders?Royal Challengers Bangalore: Virat Kohli! Faf du Plessis! Glenn Maxwell! Cameron Green! Mohammed Siraj! The RCB lineup won't be short on matchwinners, but who will fill the fourth overseas spot in the XI? And will their bowling lineup be able to defend anything under 200?Sunrisers Hyderabad: It was a busy auction for Daniel Vettori and the Orange Army. Pat Cummins joined as captain, plus Travis Head and Wanindu Hasaranga to round out a remarkably strong collection of 8 overseas players. Which four will they choose from game to game? We debate this, plus discuss whether Umran Malik can get back to his best, how much we'll miss Dale Steyn's hair and whether Captain Cummins's golden run is set to continue in 2024. We'll be back again regularly during the tournament with more news and views, but until then please take the time to give us a like, follow, share or subscribe on all our channels (@toporderpod on Twitter & Facebook, and @thetoporderpodcast on Instagram & YouTube) and a (5-Star!) review at your favourite podcast provider, or tell a friend to download. One final Test match to round out the summer! Christchurch is the scene and Andrew Ramsey is there and he gives Josh Schonafinger the lowdown on what to expect at Hagley Oval. Mitch Starc needs two poles to go past Dennis Lillee while Kane Williamson and Tim Southee will line up in their 100th matches apiece. TRIVIA ANSWERSThe only bowlers in Test cricket with a better strike rate than Mitch Starc's 48.62 are:Dale Steyn (42.38), Malcolm Marshall (46.76) and … Waqar Younis (43.49)! In terms of players playing their 100th Tests together, it's far more common than we assumed! Mike Atherton and Alex Stewart did so in 2000, Shaun Pollock, Jacques Kallis and Stephen Fleming did in the same match in 2006, and Michael Clarke and Alastair Cook also reached 100 in the Perth Test of 2013-14! Well done if you knew any of those! This episode brought to you by Qantas, the Spirit of Australia. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
How can fishing teach you about waiting for a catch at slips? Was it difficult to choose between cricket and skateboarding? What music does a fast bowler listen to? Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn joins Kaustubh Kumar and Karthik Iyer to discuss everything from his acting with Adam Sandler in Hollywood and his travels around the world to that iconic Grant Elliott photograph from the 2015 World Cup semi-final.
Host Carl Lewis chats with the sports editor at the Rapport, Tinus van Staden, about why South Africa plays such little test cricket and the factors behind this shift in global cricket. If Gerald Coetzee - the Proteas' new star bowler - plays 50 tests, he will take 450 wickets, a Protea supporter recently wrote on Twitter. "We will have to manage him well if he wants to have a career of 25 years," someone snaps back. Tongue-in-cheek, of course. Very hyperbolic. Nobody expects Cricket South Africa to manage any player well! But on a serious note: Due to the stepchild status that Test cricket enjoys these days, a quarter-century career is about what it takes for a player to amass significant Test figures (albeit 450 wickets in 50 Tests – nine per Test! – practically impossible). The 22-year-old Coetzee will never achieve superstar statistics. It's not his fault. He has a truckload of talent - a fast bowler with speed, aggression, natural swing and sustainable bowling action. The problem is South Africa no longer plays enough Tests for Coetzee to stand a chance of equaling Dale Steyn's record of 439 Test wickets (in 93 Tests over 15 years). Even the 27-year-old Kagiso Rabada (who has already taken 280 wickets in 60 Tests) may never reach Steyn's figures. And this is a greater injustice because Rabada has the potential to become the country's best yet. In the next four-year cycle - from May 2023 to April 2027 - South Africa will only play in 28 Tests. Only in 2026 again in a series of more than two tests, when England comes here for three matches. Test famine compared to the red-ball festivities that await the Big Three: 43 for England, 40 for Australia and 38 for India. Five-Test series between these countries abound.
Host Carl Lewis chats with cricket writer Christopher Chiwanza about South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje who since bursting on the international scene with his raw pace has garnered respect from around the world in cricket. Anrich Nortje is a genuine quick who has been described as "extremely exciting" by none other than Dale Steyn. Like Steyn, Nortje is not a product of a big city but comes from the town of Uitenhage, north of Port Elizabeth, which is home to the largest Volkswagen factory in the African continent. It's hardly surprising then, that Nortje is well-acquainted with speed. He regularly sends the speed gun over 150kph and has a fearsome bouncer. Nortje was schooled at Brandwag High and went on to complete a Bachelor of Commerce degree in financial planning at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, where he used varsity cricket to hone his skills. Nortje enjoyed a strong start to his first-class franchise career, with 20 wickets in four matches in the 2016-17 season and a fifth-place finish on the first-class wicket charts in the 2017-18 summer, when he was the second-highest wicket-taking seamer. But the shorter format was where he got his big break. Nortje stormed onto the scene in late 2018, in the inaugural edition of the Mzansi Super League, South Africa's franchise T20 competition, with express pace that helped him take eight wickets in three matches for the Cape Town Blitz. His sensational start did not last too long and he was forced out of the tournament with an ankle injury, which required surgery. He recovered by early 2019 and made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in March 2019. Nortje played four of the five matches in the series with a best return of 3 for 57 at his home ground in Port Elizabeth and appeared to have made a strong case for inclusion in the 2019 World Cup squad. Nortje's career appeared to be on the ascendancy when he was contracted by Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2019 IPL but had to withdraw from the tournament when he picked up a shoulder injury. Despite that, he was named in South Africa's World Cup squad and had recovered in time for the tournament but broke his thumb in training ahead of the team's departure. An opportunity to tour with the national side finally came in September-October 2019, when Nortje was named in the squad for a T20I and Test series in India. He made his debuts in both formats there.
This week on the show we take stock of IPL 2022 as the games tick past the halfway mark of the competition. We talk about the biggest surprises so far, try to figure out what's gone wrong for Mumbai and CSK, plus discuss the no-ball drama featuring Rishabh Pant and what that means for his long-term leadership outlook. There's also Dale Steyn's hair; Lippy singing a song; praise for Jos Buttler, KL Rahul and T Natarajan; and plenty of humble pie as we reflect on our preview as well as looking forward to what's still to come as the tournament moves closer to the business end. Trotty tells us about his favourite ground he played at around the world and how the advance of social media and camera phones ruined the experience for players touring overseas. We talked about the all-conquering England side he was a key part of, especially beating India and Australia away in 2010-2011. We get an insight into the mind of Kevin Pietersen and also his toughest opponent Dale Steyn. We also talk about his key part in the film documentary "The Edge".
Dale Steyn started as a young wannabee professional skateboarder from a small bush town, who didn't even know the game of cricket existed, and went on to become the world's best bowler, a position that he held for just nine days short of seven years. Inaugurating this very first episode of Lessons From The World's Best, Dale shares generously about his first professional contract playing overseas, and how he first needed to “do his apprenticeship” and learn the simple lessons in life. Things like washing his clothes and learning to cook before he could focus on his bowling. He discusses, without filter, how he managed himself around the pressures of hate on social media, and how players are not adequately mentally prepared to ‘not win' at a world cup; which is statistically the most likely outcome. He shares, for the first time, about bowling the final over of the 2015 world cup semi-final where he had six balls to secure South Africa's first ever final appearance, only to fail. Dale describes what the true impact of that moment was on him and how it moved him to tears in the middle of 2021, six years later. You will get to meet the persona that he adopted and hear how he transformed from his natural friendly nature, to the warrior that intimidated opponents – even when the real Dale was exhausted and felt far from intimidating. Among other things, he shares the truth about his confidence, about how off-field relationships can impact performance and the difficulty of speaking up about difficulties. 10 years into our friendship, Dale surprised me by some of what he shared. The fascinating thing about him is that, on the field he was famous for his fierce and uncompromising assault on the world's best batsmen, yet off the field, he is genuinely one of the most down-to-earth, relaxed and humble people you could wish to meet. Please enjoy this heartfelt conversation with my friend, Dale Steyn. Being regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time requires focus, clarity and inner drive. In today's episode, I reflect on a conversation I had with Dale Steyn, the recently retired South African cricketer. In his incredible career he took 439 wickets in 93 tests, and was ranked the ICC number one bowler in test cricket for a staggering 263 weeks in a row. In this episode, find out about the impact of inspiring your kids and grassroots initiatives, Dale's techniques to embrace feedback, build confidence and channel his aggression. We also hear the team culture he leaves behind which is as powerful as his individual story of rising to the top.
