Life is full of sweet highs and terrible merlots on today's Script Apart as Alexander Payne – director of movies like Election, The Holdovers, Nebraska and About Schmidt – joins us to raise a glass to an indie drama that has aged like a fine wine. The brilliant Sideways was released in 2004 and soon earned four Academy Award nominations, taking home Best Adapted Screenplay. It won six Independent Spirit Awards, was picked up for Japanese remake and instigated a huge tourism boom in the California wine country that forms the film's backdrop. Co-written with frequent collaborator Jim Taylor, it told the tale of two friends on a wine tasting expedition, each struggling to break out of a certain middle-aged, middle-class male malaise (one of Alexander's screenwriting specialties). The result? A dramedy widely regarded as one of the best of its decade. The film saw Paul Giamatti play Miles – an aspiring author whose dreams of literary stardom are misfiring, much like his love life. Recently divorced, he and his old college friend Jack, played by Thomas Haden Church, hop in the car to celebrate Jack's upcoming wedding. But Jack – a washed-up soap opera actor – is intent on hooking up with women as part of one last sexual hurrah before marriage. Caught up in the mix as the pair quarrel and cause trouble is Virginia Madsen's Maya, a barmaid that Miles strikes up feelings for. Professing those feelings in a serious way, though, is difficult for the wine aficionado and English teacher – a man so mired in regret about what was, he's unable to grasp the now and what could still be. Much is often made about the recurring quote-unquote “losers” that lead Alexander's films, and what they might have to say about modern American man. The filmmaker, though, has always been pretty resolute that his movies centre the downtrodden and dopey simply because, deep down, these films are comedies – a genre the historically sides with the little guy, going all the way back to Charlie Chaplin. But how does he define the mix of pathos and hilarity that fill his characters? Where does Alexander's affinity towards road trip stories come from? What's so relatable and real about Miles' fear that his literary dreams might amount to nothing – and that a life of feeling like a loser awaits? And what was the inspiration behind the film's beautiful ending – a knock at the door that we as an audience never see answered? All is revealed across a fascinating thirty-minute sit down with the auteuer.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. On this weeks podcast I have a very interesting guest. He has over twenty years of experience managing restaurants and looking at the best ways to view data to maximize the performance of your restaurant. He has taken the old standard metrics and turned them upside down. Looking at everything from simple food and labour costs to leadership and managing personnel. His name is Jim Taylor, owner of Benchmark Sixty, a restaurant consulting firm and also a partner in the new incarnation of Le Crocodile by Rob Feenie. I first saw Jim's work on linked in and started to follow him because he was being disruptive to the status quo, and this industry need more thinkers like him to change the mindset most operators have. I hope you like our chat and be sure to check him ou on LinkedIn and read his book Bold Operations. Send us your feedback
Jim Taylor from the RFD Radio Network interviewed local Annawan High School student Ella Anderson about being chosen as the Actively Engaged Student of the Month for December by the Illinois Farm Bureau.
“I remember my dad telling me when I was 12 or 13 that I was too old to play with toys,” reports internationally known Barbie collector Jim Taylor. He opened Season 4 of Smart Sex, Smart Love by talking about why he began collecting Barbies, and now is the proud owner of more than 3,000 dolls. “I played with traditional boy toys growing up,” he points out. “I loved transformers.” As he got older, his desire to play with toys never diminished. Finally, when Taylor was well into his 20s, he decided, “I can do what I want, and I'm going to buy toys if I feel like it.” He has no “scientific” process for doll collecting. “Some people collect celebrity dolls; others collect ball gown dolls or Kens. Buy what you love, and you will love your collection,” he announces. “It's what makes me happy.” He urges others: “Follow your bliss. I no longer say to myself, ‘you're a grown man, you can't buy that.' Buy yourself a doll if it makes you happy!” Learn more about doll collecting and Jim Taylor's story in this Smart Sex, Smart Love podcast.
We're toasting the twentieth anniversary of a film about wine, friendship, and love among the vineyards of the Santa Ynez Valley, California. Directed by Alexander Payne and based on the novel by Rex Pickett, this 2004 hangout/road comedy from Fox Searchlight became a critic's darling, sweeping the “Big Four” critics' awards and winning the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA, WGA, and Critic's Choice awards for Payne and co-writer Jim Taylor. The movie also marked breakthrough performances for its entire lead cast: Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen, and Sandra Oh. The corky, uh, quirky comedy even affected wine sales, causing a spike in pinot noir sales and a dip in merlot sales. But will praise of this film die on the vine with our three hosts, or will we find that it goes down easy despite its vintage? Join us as we give you the straight story on Sideways! The storyline is brought to life by Raymond Edward Johnson as the lead operative, with Alfred Shirley and Mercedes McCambridge lending their voices as key members of the resistance group. After Steven Spielberg took the reins for both Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic World, it was time for some fresh meat for Jurassic Park III, which was the first to not be directed by Spielberg and not be based on a Michael Crichton novel.Jurassic Park III would start to have problems early, though. The original script was thrown out five weeks before filming was due to start, with the project already having spent $18 million. New writers Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor were quickly hired to improve the story and characters , but they never actually completed a script.Filming would start without a complete script, which would lead to a myriad of problems. It meant entire days shooting only one or two scenes, and quickly the production was behind schedule. While Jurassic Park III is mostly known for "Alan", being the shortest movie in the franchise at a lean 92 minutes, and the lowest grossing movie of the franchise, it was also quietly revolutionary with its visual effects - the practical led by the legendary Stan Winston Studio and the CG by Industrial Light and Magic. And who knew it would predict an actual scientific discovery on dinosaur behaviour?I would love to hear your thoughts on Jurassic Park III !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! To most people, the idea of a Barbie doll consists of a few ubiquitous images: blonde hair, tiny waist, and a shade of pink. But if you were to ask Jim Taylor what he sees when he thinks of the legendary Ms. Roberts, he would spin a tale that spans decades of history, pop culture, and merchandise mechanics. With a diverse collection that has been expanding since the late 1990s, Jim has cultivated a deep, personal appreciation for all things Barbie, as well as a sound education in the workings of her world, both of which he generously shares with the eager and enthusiastic audiences that crowd his social media platforms. Jim has been involved with financing growth companies for over 20 years and has created and managed seven different funds prior to Forage. He was a founder of three growth equity funds, three subordinated debt funds, and the Farm Credit Canada Ventures direct investment program. Jim has raised and managed over $500 million dollars of growth capital in the Ag food industry. Jim has carved out a reputation for himself as the go-to person for anyone with an ag or food company with a proven product and business model that is ready to take on outside investment for growth. His approach makes so much sense to me as someone who can be a bit skeptical of a lot of what I see in early stage venture capital. But we've never covered this on the show, so I'm very excited to share with you this conversation with Jim Taylor.

ABOUT JERRY KRAMER AND RUN TO WIN "You can if you will." A phrase uttered to a young Jerry Kramer by his line coach at Sandpoint High School in tiny Sandpoint, Idaho, that would go on to push him to a celebrated NFL career with the Green Bay Packers and a sentiment that he would repeat to close his speech at his long awaited enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame almost seven decades later in 2018.In the spirit of Jerry Kramer's unforgettable and bestselling collaborations with the great Dick Schaap, his first book about his life and career in over two decades, Run to Win will serve as Kramer's definitive statement about a remarkable life and career of perseverance, teamwork, and gridiron greatness. Spanning the beginning of the legendary Vince Lombardi era through Kramer's confoundingly long wait to receive his bust in Canton, Kramer tells his amazing story as one of the most memorable and toughest Packers in franchise history. Including insightful commentary about the eminently intriguing Lombardi, as well as fellow Hall of Fame teammates Jim Taylor, Forrest Gregg, Willie Davis, Bart Starr, Emlen Tunnell, and many more, Run to Win is a must read for all true Packers fans from one of the legends who helped lay the foundation for one of the most identifiable and successful franchises in the history of professional sports. JERRY KRAMER BIO Jerry Kramer overcame a series of childhood injuries to become an excellent football ball player at the University of Idaho. The guard was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fourth round (39th player overall) of the 1958 NFL Draft. He starred for the Green Bay Packers from 1958 to 1968, playing most of his 11-season career under the direction of Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi.Upon his entry into the NFL, he soon was hailed as one of the best blockers in the game and earned his first All-NFL acclaim in 1960, the same year the Packers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL Championship Game -- Kramer's only career postseason loss.He continued his high level of play all while overcoming several debilitating injuries. In 1961, he missed several games due to a broken ankle that required a permanent pin to heal. Then, in 1964, he missed most of the season due to intestinal infections from wood splinters in his abdomen that required eight surgeries to rectify. In each instance, he returned to All-NFL form.Kramer played 130 games as the Packers guard and served as the team's placekicker for several seasons. His leadership and talents helped the franchise capture five NFL championships and victories in Super Bowls I and II.At the time of his retirement in 1968, he held the NFL Championship Game record for most field goal attempts in a game (five against the New York Giants in 1962) and the Packers' team record for most PATs in a season (43 in 1963).He earned All-NFL acclaim five times (1960, 1962-63, 1966-67) and was voted to three Pro Bowls. Kramer was also named to the NFL's All-Decade Team of the 1960s, the NFL's 50th Anniversary Team in 1969 and the Super Bowl Silver Anniversary Team.Get the book here: https://www.amazon.com/Run-Win-Packers-Lombardi-Canton/dp/1637273002

"The Holdovers" had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, where it received some of Alexander Payne's best reviews since "Sideways." It later screened at the Toronto International Film Festival to similar acclaim and was the runner-up for the Toronto People's Choice Award. Re-uniting Paul Giamatti with Payne, the film is one of the rare films from Payne that neither he nor his collaborator Jim Taylor wrote together. Screenwriter David Hemingson was kind enough to spend a few moments speaking with us about the script, how he came on board the project, working with Payne, and more. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in limited release and will expand on November 10th from Focus Features. Thank you, and enjoy!
