Jodi Newland, Executive Director of Daniel’s Grace Charitable Foundation sits with Patricia and Ashley to discuss why she created the foundation, and how it is helping cancer patients. After being diagnosed with terminal colon cancer, and receiving help from people around the country, her husband, Daniel Burns, realized how important it is to help others and not always put yourself first. This weighed heavily on him, as he knew he would never be able to repay the kindness he’d received. After Daniel passed, Jodi decided to take steps to honor his last wishes, and created Daniel’s Grace Charitable Foundation.Daniel’s Grace Charitable Foundation helps with the financial struggles that families quite often face when dealing with a cancer diagnosis. Most people don‘t realize that 40% of dread winners lose their entire life’s savings during the first two years of battling cancer. When the family loses their bread winner’s ability to earn, the battles become much more difficult.Through a social worker, or nurse navigator, patients can apply to the foundation. The foundation then helps identify the family’s greatest financial needs ie: rent, utilities etc, and aids the family in bridging the gap.Beyond the financial help, Daniel’s Grace Charitable Foundation supports the emotional aspect of this disease. Through the Little Red Mailbox, people can spread messages of hope and support. This special, red mailbox is located in Little Island Park in Sandbridge, and is open to anyone wanting to lend support or needing to receive or positive messages. There is also a journal in the mailbox where people can write about experiences for others to read.Daniel’s Grace Foundation also sponsors events such as the Concert for Cancer and the Annual Roast on the River. Podcast 33: Danksgiving! Jake and Nick hold down the weekly episode. Jake gives us a run down of his adventures in beer collecting. Nightshift (Everett, MA) was up first. Jake had a weird experience while getting to-go beers. He's still making up his mind on whether or not he's a big fan of Nightshift. They have a great selection and can pretty much everything they make. Jake was up-sold to getting a case instead of just 5 4pks of beer. We had a few of the beers Thursday night and they were all very good. Jake's beer muling created a need for many coolers. He did stop at Trillium (Fort Point, MA) and got a few 4 packs and one very delicious bottle of Fated Farmer - Nectarine. From there he covered a new experience for him at Treehouse Brewing Co. (Charlton, MA). We've been a couple times at this point and they usually sell cans right when you get inside, but what he didn't realize was that the can line went all the way through the taproom area and extended his stay. Aaalterrr Ego was the star “rare release.” After the stop at Treehouse, Jake had a total of 93 beers in his 2002 Ford Taurus on his way back to Pittsburgh for Danksgiving. Continuing on we cover what we drank for Danksgiving. Here's the list! Treehouse: Green Aaalterrr Ego! Doppelganger Nightshift: Gravitas Out Of Darkness - Collab with Black Ale Project Left Brain - Collab with New Image Brewing (CO) Snowball Fight! Lounge Out Trillium: Fated Farmer - Nectarine Black Mettle Triple Seesaw - Peach, Plum, Blueberry, Boysenberry, Strawberry, Tart Cherry and Apricot Dancing Gnome: Lustra Aerobars and No Cassette - Collab with Other Half (NY) While we're discussing the beer, we got off on a tangent about styles and what kind of beers we like and gave our opinions on our top 3 from the day. During the conversation we hit on what is an acceptable time frame to drink an IPA and what time does to these hazy juice bombs. Nick's #1 was Gravitas (Triple IPA - 10.5%) Jake's #1 was Fated Farmer (American Wild Ale - 6.6%) Jake had a few beers with cousin Ed and we talk about the black IPA style and some local breweries. Nick cracked open a 2016 Bourbon County Barleywine from Goose Island over the weekend as well. Super smooth and really thick but I'm glad I got to share with a few friends. During the Recap we hit on the book Shane was talking about last weekend. It's called Food and Beer by Daniel Burns and Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergso. Link below! In this episode, I talk with Daniel Burns, whose son came up with the idea to start Nevin’s Hunting Friends (http://www.nevinshuntingfriends.com). A group dedicated to getting kids with special needs outdoors. Their mission is simple, “to help those kids that have trouble getting into the woods due to their illness”. Nevin’s Hunting Friends is a 501c3 charity and can be contacted from their website listed above or by the groups Facebook page (@nevinshuntingfriends). You can view past hunts on the GEN 7 Outdoors TV Channel by clicking here. If you are a manufacturer of hunting or fishing gear, I would encourage you to look at this special needs group and see if you can provide some gear to help keep these young kids in the outdoors.

This week on Beer Sessions Radio, host Jimmy Carbone is joined in the studio by brewer Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø of the bar Tørst, and Canadian chef Daniel Burns of the Michelin-starred restaurant Luksus. They are also co-authors of the new book Food & Beer, which aims to elevate beer to the level of wine in fine dining. With a dialogue running throughout the book, Food & Beer examines the vision and philosophy of this duo at the forefront of a new gastronomic movement, and highlights the dual visions of the authors and the spaces — Tørst, which is more rustic and relaxed, and Luksus, which is more sleek and refined.
