    Financial Help For Cancer Patients

Jodi Newland, Executive Director of Daniel’s Grace Charitable Foundation sits with Patricia and Ashley to discuss why she created the foundation, and how it is helping cancer patients. After being diagnosed with terminal colon cancer, and receiving help from people around the country,  her husband, Daniel Burns, realized how important it is to help others and not always put yourself first.  This weighed heavily on him, as he knew he would never be able to repay the kindness he’d received. After Daniel passed, Jodi decided to take steps to honor his last wishes, and created Daniel’s Grace Charitable Foundation.Daniel’s Grace Charitable Foundation helps with the financial struggles that families quite often face when dealing with a cancer diagnosis.  Most people don‘t realize that 40% of dread winners lose their entire life’s savings during the first two years of battling cancer. When the family loses their bread winner’s ability to earn, the battles become much more difficult.Through a social worker, or nurse navigator, patients can apply to the foundation.  The foundation  then helps identify the family’s greatest financial needs ie: rent, utilities etc, and aids the family in bridging the gap.Beyond the financial help, Daniel’s Grace Charitable Foundation supports the emotional aspect of this disease.  Through the Little Red Mailbox, people can spread messages of hope and support. This special,  red mailbox is located in Little Island Park in Sandbridge, and is open to anyone wanting to lend  support or needing to receive or positive messages. There is also a journal in the mailbox where people can write about experiences for others to read.Daniel’s Grace Foundation also sponsors events such as the Concert for Cancer and the Annual Roast on the River. For More Information:danielsgrace.orgFacebook: danielsgracevaInstagram: danielsgracefoundationTo watch this week’s entire episode of Living 757, click here! And if you would like to see someone featured on the show, please send a message to Share@Living757.com and you may just see them here soon!

Ever hear of “The One That Got Away?”Well, this fish tale just happens to be true, and it happened right here in the 757. Josiah and Zeek VanFleet went out on what would be an “ordinary” fishing trip – or so they thought. They were very excited as they had just become the proud owners of their very own boat, and were ready to test it out in the open water. They were ready to fish and were not disappointed when they felt a strong bite. After a 2 1/2 hour fight, this beast was captured and hauled into the boat. It took 7 men all their strength, along with the help of a big wave, to pull this massive creature into the boat. How massive was it? Well, this bad boy was estimated to weigh about 1,000 pounds – that’s a lot of sandwiches! In an unfortunate twist of fate, the scales at the marina were broken, so the exact weight and whether or not this bluefin tuna broke any fishing record will never be known. What we do know, however is that this whale of a tale has forever made its mark on Zeek and his dad Josiah, and the rest of the VanFleet family. To watch this week’s entire episode of Living 757, and see the photos of the massive tuna, click here! And if you would like to see someone featured on the show, please send a message to Share@Living757.com and you may just see them here soon!

Ashely and Quincy got some great safety tips for working in their yards.Spring if finally here, and if you’re like us, you are ready to hop outside and do some planting. But….safety first!  Before you go digging around in your yard, check out what Natalie Soucie from Virginia 811 had to say. What we don’t know or typically think about is the fact that there is a “highway” of underground utilities in your yard.  As you can imagine, a metal shovel digging into an electrical system, can have “hair raising” consequences. So…before you start on any of your yard projects where digging is involved, Virginia 811 asks you to dig with C.A.R.E.Contact Va811.com -Just go to VA811.com  and submit a dig request.Allow time (3 business days) for them to contact utility members to come out and mark your property. The check to see that they have come out.Respect the markings that are made in your yard.  Your utility is within 2 feet on each side of the mark, so you don’t want heavy machinery or deep digging there..  Green lines are sewer lines, yellow lines are gas lines and red lines are your electric/power line.   Excavate carefully so you don’t disturb underground utilities! Once you finish your work then you can ENJOY finishing your spring planting and beautiful garden.Taking CARE will keep you safe while you’re making your yard look beautiful!  Added bonus -your neighbors won’t get upset because you knocked out the power for the block! For More Information:www.va811.comFacebook: VA811Instagram: 811ofva/Twitter: va_811To watch this week’s entire episode of Living 757, click here! And if you would like to see someone featured on the show, please send a message to Share@Living757.com and you may just see them here soon!

In fact, a new trend termed “the Covid learning loss” shows how many children have lost some of the information skills that they have needed to build on (similar to what happens during the long summer break) in order to be successful in the upcoming standardized tests.Sylvan Learning Centers is a prescriptive learning program which partners with parents in order to identify and help strengthen students’ weaknesses. This helps relieve anxiety, build confidence which aids greatly, especially during the upcoming  SOL tests. If your children are not going back virtually, they can still benefit greatly from working with Sylvan to assess their progress, any issues or difficult areas they may have, and help strengthen any weak areas. So, if you are concerned about how to help your child be more successful in school, relieve anxiety, or you just want to make sure they are on the right track, make sure to give Kim at Sylvan Learning Centers of Chesapeake and Suffolk a call at (757) 447-3690.For More Information:sylvanlearning.com/us/Chesapeake-vahttps://www.facebook.com/SylvanLearningTo watch this week’s entire episode of Living 757, click here! And if you would like to see someone featured on the show, please send a message to Share@Living757.com and you may just see them here soon!

We knew we needed some more information about this fantastic at home ionic detox, so we asked Rebekah a few more questions:How often do you recommend doing this sort of detox? We recommend a 60min detox twice a month for a great flush and metabolism booster. Why is this type of detox done through the feet? The ionic foot cleanse is a holistic therapy known as aqua chi foot bath in Traditional Chinese Medicine and it works to balance the energy flow, replenish our cells and promote alkaline health. Our feet have glands that are connected to other parts of our body and are able to detox through secretion. This is similar to our skin, tongue and armpits. How long does the detox take?A detox session can range from minimum 30min or maximum of 90min per day.Do clients need to prepare in any way prior to doing the detox? We highly recommend drinking a lot of water before your cleanse and prepare to get rest afterwards. After the detox, is there anything you need to avoid? You should avoid dehydration, overexertion, fatty or acidic foods as well as alcohol.Should you drink more water prior to or after doing a detox? Yes, you should drink lots of water both before and after your session.Do you think you will continue to provide the home detox as a service once everything opens back up? Yes we anticipate offering it post-Covid.Although our at-home rental has become popular due to safety measures, it’s also favored as a family experience that includes unlimited detox spa treatments during your rental period. Her unique sound and gorgeous musical style left us begging for more, so we asked Helena a few more questions: You said your father was a major musical influence in your life.  Was he your main teacher?Yes actually, my mother too. My dad is a guitar player and my mom plays piano. I got more of 60’s & 70’s rock n roll/folk/latin influence from my father, and my soul/jazz/funk influence from my mothers musical palette. They both were very busy growing up so my main musical teacher became the internet, mainly youtube. How long have you been playing guitar and do you play any other instruments?I have been playing guitar for almost 10 years now. I also enjoy playing a bit of piano. How old were you when you wrote your first song?I was around 12 years old when I wrote my first song. No recordings exist but I have the lyrics written and saved on paper. It’s interesting to me to read my 12 year old perspective on friendship & loss. The song is titled Mind Games. What do you love about being a musician?I love the freedom to express myself the most. Writing music, performing it, recording it, & releasing it, is the way I process my life experiences. It is extremely cathartic for me to set my music free. It’s most natural for me to sing what I feel rather than saying what I feel, and it is exceptionally beautiful when a listener can relate or draw their own personal interpretation from the music I have shared. You have played in so many great venues including the House of Blues and the Lightning in a Bottle Music Festival.  What has been your favorite and why?My favorite has to be Lightning in a Bottle Music Festival. I was performing at a small tent there called the Tea Tent where people sit on the floor and share cups of tea and conversations. I was performing with around 10 musicians & close friends of mine. The energy from them and the unexpectedly large crowd we drew is hard to put into words. It was a great example of how music can bring people together in the most positive way. What is your dream gig?My dream gig is opening for or sharing the stage with any one of my musical heroes who are still alive. To name a few: Lianne La Havas, Margaret Glaspy, Esperanza Spalding, Alice Phoebe Lou, Andy Shauf, The California Honeydrops, Paul Simon, & Joni Mitchell. For More Information:helenaholleranmusic.comInstagram: helenaholleranFacebook: helenaholleranSpotify: helenaholleranTo watch this week’s entire episode of Living 757, click here! And if you would like to see someone featured on the show, please send a message to Share@Living757.com and you may just see them here soon!

Tour Virginia Wine Country with Fruits and Roots

What was it that originally piqued your interest in the history of Virginia wines? I began working at Chrysalis Vineyards in Middleburg VA in 2005. This area, like most of VA, is rich with American history and wine!As a member of the DAR, I am especially interested in 18th century history around the formation of our country. Wine, craft beer and spirits were all a part of this. Based on your research, where was the first winery established in Virginia? This is somewhat of a debated topic. However, my research points to what is now known as Phillip Carter in Hume, VA.What are some surprising facts about Virginia wine that you have learned? Our Virginia soil has a louse called phylloxera. This almost destroyed the wine industry as we know it today in France. As a result, almost all European wine “root” stock is American. (You have to Google this one. It is quite a story!) Can you accommodate groups, and how far in advance must reservations be made?Yes absolutely! Right now with the Governor’s COVID-19 related restrictions, we are at groups of 10 inside and 25 outside. Hopefully this will change by April 2021. Reservations are encouraged at least a month in advance for private tours. Our public tours generally are available for purchase until the day before the event unless sold out.The Walton’s Mountain and Haunted Wine Trail tours tend to sell out months in advance. Therefore, we encourage folks to purchase those tickets NOW! Can you do custom tours for larger groups?Absolutely! We can accommodate larger groups once the restrictions are lifted. What have customers told you is their favorite thing about your tours? Most guests enjoy the variety of wines, delicious food, the little known historical facts and the beautiful scenery along the way!For More Informations:fruitsandrootswinetours.comFacebook: fruitsandrootswinetoursInstagram: fruitsandrootswinetoursWant to see the Fruits and Roots tour in action? We got some more first hand experiences from Matt, and learned more about where to turn when diagnosed with diabetes. He also shared with us some great tips on how to be supportive of someone you care about who is diabetic, and how to get involved. You were diagnosed with diabetes at a young age, what are some good ways to support kids who are facing this diagnosis. When I was diagnosed my family changed some of their dietary habits to support me in my new lifestyle change. This helped me gain some discipline early on in my diagnosis that I still turn back to today. There are also some awesome opportunities through the ADA for kids or volunteers to partake in initiatives like Project Power or Imagine Camp. This will allow kids with diabetes to meet others just like them and be educated through a fun environment. What are some of the symptoms people with diabetes experience? I’ll never forget the symptoms leading to my diagnosis: extreme fatigue, weight loss, frequent urination, and excessive thirst. These are symptoms of high blood sugar, or hyperglycemia, that diabetics will experience due to lack of insulin production from the pancreas. What is the best way for people to get involved? Get involved with the ADA! There are so many opportunities to support this incredible organization whether it’s volunteering at local events, donating and/or fundraising for a cure, or chairing/serving on one of their subcommittees.Tour de Cure, ADA’s premier cycling event, is happening now through May 1st! You can participate virtually by walking, running, and of course cycling! Get more information or sign up at diabetes.org/virginiatdcWe are also recruiting the future leaders of America to join ADA’s Young Professional Leadership Council. This is a great volunteer opportunity for recent grads to expand their professional development and take part in initiatives developed by the Council in partnership with the ADA.You can also become an advocate for diabetes and take part in initiatives like Call to Congress or signing petitions to lower insulin costs. I could go on, but bottom line, there is something for everyone to get involved and we’d love to work with you! You can reach out to our local ADA office or visit the ADA site for more information. Colonial Williamsburg Showcases Black History

When and with what purpose was the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation established? Colonial Williamsburg was established in 1926 and opened its first public site in 1932 to restore and educationally interpret the City of Williamsburg during the Revolutionary era of the late 18th century, when it was the capitol of Britain’s largest, most populous and prosperous colony, a political flashpoint for the revolution, and later capitol of the new Commonwealth of Virginia.During the period more than half the city’s population was Black, most of them enslaved. The city was a major trade and diplomatic hub with indigenous tribes within Virginia land claimed by the British extending to the Mississippi.Colonial Williamsburg seeks to interpret the city and period completely, reflecting the diversity and complexity of our shared American story. Its ultimate goal is to support civil society and fundamental democratic ideals in our country and around the world. How does having actor/interpreters help spread the stories woven throughout the history of Virginia? They bring our shared history to life and engage and interact with audiences both on-site and virtually in ways not possible in a text or traditional heritage site or museum. They foster real person-to-person connections and often field questions guests might otherwise hesitate to ask in regular society about sensitive social issues.Dress rehearsal for the program, “Created Equal” performed on the Charlton Stage July 2, 2020. Cast members wear face masks due to COVID-19This typically fosters a deeper understanding of history and our culture and civil society. Sometimes interpreters strongest interactions are with younger guests. How do the actor interpreters prepare for their roles as the various people they portray? Exhaustive historical research on the period and their characters, whether their character is a known historical figure or a “composite character” that represents a typical person of a certain station during the period. Interpreters Kurt Smith as Thomas Jefferson and Jamar Jones as Jupiter in the program “Jefferson and Jupiter: Across the Board”In addition they participate in robust program development and rehearsal and spend time “on the street” interacting with guests in-character, which is a perpetual experience of learning and professional development. What is the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation doing to celebrate African American heritage and educate people during Black History month? After giving Quincy some great Valentine’s Day tips, Maria DeGalleford helped us understand why it is so helpful to hire a wedding planner by answering few, more in-depth questions for us.You mentioned we are currently in “Prime Consult” season. How far in advance would you advise someone to begin planning a big event? The ideal timeframe for securing everything is 12-18 months prior to the big day.The Hampton roads area is a destination location, with a lot of out-of-town clients as well as military clients and vendors and venues book quickly.Although we will still be booking some of the smaller details up until 3-6 months, clients may not have as many options. We make monthly checklists to make sure we stay on track and that nothing is missed. What is the craziest proposal you have helped orchestrate?I haven’t had anything too crazy in terms of proposals. We have had time crunches or bad weather. One client wanted his hotel suite decorated with candles, rose petals, specialty foods, the whole thing. However, the hotel was brand new, and check-in was a bit delayed. We actually had to move at lightning speed to pull it off. I think we were ripping plastic off of stuff and throwing it all together in 20 minutes. We passed them in the hallway but she had no idea who we were, the end result was beautiful, so it worked out.Another client insisted on this area of beach near the jetty. It had been raining on and off all day. He was adamant that the beach would be the best, so we had set and reset a few times during sprinkle showers. I swear when she showed up the skies cleared. Are there any aspects of a wedding that the bride and groom might not be aware of that they need to include or plan for in the wedding? Most couples plan for the setup but never for the breakdown. The end of the night breakdown is usually always an after thought. Lots of friends and family want to help “Set-up” but no one wants to stay for the breakdown after a full day of event prep and celebrating. We handle all aspects of the breakdown and pack everything up and return it the following day. No one is waiting around to load up their car. We usually have a good assortment of rentals that need to be returned, the couple’s personal items and then random things that guests have left like shoes, cell phones, etc. Sometimes that pile is really odd.For More Information:www.everlyafterevents.comInstagram: @everlyaftereventsFacebook: everlyaftereventsInterested in special ways to celebrate your big day? We had a quick chat with the members of Starcoast and premiered their latest song, Believe In Love. Now, we get a bit more personal. How did you first know that you, as a band, were a good fit? Sometimes when things jell you don’t think too much on it. We kind of just have the same outlook for life. We all just felt like brothers since the first time we kicked back, so it’s more of a family first, band second kind of thing. We never really thought about or questioned it fitting, but there was a moment after we got back from our first tour of the UK when we realized wow we just spent three weeks schlepping equipment across England and we still laugh at ourselves with each other, this could work. When composing music, what is your inspiration? We don’t think too much about that one either really. We definitely want to try to make something that will move love to people and help them feel nice. We have listening parties at our house where we will sit and listen to stuff we find, and maybe that gets brought into the writing room. Who takes the lead when writing songs? Is it a group effort?Music is so multidimensional, with “Believe in Love” it seemed like it dropped out of the sky. We counted to four in the practice room and wrote the thing on the spot. We write like an organism.Whom do you hope to reach with your music? We write this music for everyone, if they’ll have a go at it. What is your favorite story/experience you’ve had a band?Haha. So we had a show fall through last minute in Manchester, so the three of us and our tour manager/zookeeper, Emily were driving around just running into venues to see if we could jump on a ticket. We found one that was up this rickety staircase, we shuffled up it with our guitar cases and cymbals. We ended up in this edgy ex-rollerskating / disco club with lit up square floors and ceilings. Weirdest place ever. We kind of charged into the greenroom and amidst the local Man punk scene started chatting it up. They were the most welcoming, nicest group of people. They without a blink directed us to where we would inevitably play our first set that night, The Peer Hat. We went on to play a second after hours show at The English Lounge. Ya ever need a hand, find the punkers in Manchester. For More Information:Instagram: starcoast.musicFacebook: starcoastmusic/Spotify: Starcoast.SpotifyOn the video interview, the ladies of Living 757 drew their favorite happy place for the band! It was great to have Loreina on the show to share the story of her battle with cervical cancer. We were able to get just a few more moments with her to learn about her journey to parenthood:January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Based off of your own experience, how important is early detection? So, very important! If I didn’t go in for my yearly pap, and catch it early, I would have probably needed chemo or radiation. A simple yearly pap can save your life. Early detection is everything! What advice do you have for women who have been diagnosed with cervical cancer?Try your best to stay positive. Change your diet and lifestyle! I cut out meat, sugar and dairy completely. Use foods as medicine, don’t eat foods that feed cancer. As a result of having cervical cancer, what challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them? Not being able to conceive or carry has been the hardest challenge. The egg retrieval process was very difficult for me because I don’t like shots or needles and I had to have multiple daily. Luckily, I have a wonderful husband who helped give them to me and calm me down.Finding the perfect gestational carrier was another challenge, I am grateful for Facebook groups. Never Forget! In Remembrance of Holocaust Remembrance Day

After speaking with Dr. Finley-Croswhite, professor of History at ODU, we asked her a few more questions regarding her studies about the Holocaust. She shared why she works so hard to promote remembrance of the holocaust as well as some heartbreaking accounts of holocaust victims who were children. What is the significance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day?International Holocaust Remembrance Day was created in 2005 by the United Nations. That date is so significant because on that date, January 27, 1945 Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated and photographs of the camp were disseminated to the world. Why do you study the Holocaust?I think it is so important to study the fact that via the Nazis and their collaborators, over 6 millions Jews were murdered simply because they were Jews. What would you like to say today about victims, survivors, and rescuers? I’d like to emphasize of the 6 millions Jews who died in the Holocaust, 1.5 million were children. Eva and Leah were from the Netherlands and initially hidden with a Catholic family. The father of that family, however, denounced them to the Gestapo along with his wife as well who was a devout Catholic rescuer. Eva and Leah were only eight and six when they were gassed on arrival at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Similarly, Esther Ferszenfeld, was a French girl from a Jewish family, a teenager during the Holocaust. She and her parents were arrested in a raid in Paris that sent over 8000 children to Auschwitz-Birkeanu. When Esther arrived she was sent to the labor camp, but she survived only six weeks and then died from hard labor and exhaustion. Luckily Eva and Leah’s younger brother, Dr. Al Munzer survived because of a Muslim family who hid him during the war. (I’ve included a photo of an actual hiding space in the basement of a home in Poland where Jews were hidden by a Catholic family). And Esther’s sister, Marie Magar, survived because she left for London during the 1930s. As a result, we know the personal stories of Eva and Leah and Esther and can remember their precious memories today. May their memories always be a blessing.
