We put on our finest white spandex for this amazing episode! The main topic was a new review study on protein needs for endurance athletes. The authors used a cool method of isotope labeling to argue that endurance athletes need more protein than traditional recommendations. The nutrition revolution is not just about carbs! And this one was full of great topics! Other topics: the announcement of an Unbreakable 2 documentary heading into Western States, Kilian Jornet's sustained dominance since the first Unbreakable was filmed, the 1-year anniversary of the bike crash, Tailwind High-Carb, our questions about protein recommendations, increased power and weight in professional cycling, torpedo bats dominating the conversation in baseball, mile times of the Houston basketball team, VO2 max estimates from your watch across different sports, nutrition on race week, the "yips" in running, balancing intensity with cross training, maintaining confidence when changing jobs, overdressed walking for heat training, and balancing training with studying for the bar exam.Thank you so much for being here in the year since the accident. Showing up each week has been a backbone of our lives, and we appreciate you so much. Florence and the Machine can play us out:"Is this how it is?Is this how it's always been?To exist in the face of suffering and deathAnd somehow, still keep singing."We love you all! Death and the Conjurorby Tom MeadShow NotesMysterious Press July 2022ON episode 242 and we are finally back after our holiday hiatus. We are fiinally reporting on the book Deathand the Conjuror: A Locked Room Mystery by Tom Mead. We assigned this book back in September buthave not been able to publish our findings until now.This a throwback locked room mystery set in 1936 London. Renowned psychiatrist Anselm Rees is founddead in his study.The cast of characters includes his adult daughter who he trained in the field, her fiancé, the housekeeper,Detective Flint, Spector the conjurer, along with a variety of interesting character walk-ons and Patients 1, 2and 3, all successful in the arts.There's an actress, a writer and a famed musician and the notes on their sessions reveal much. Having beena fan in my earliest years of mystery ready of the classic authors to produced these confections, this hadgreat characters and was well plotted. A bit of magic and old fashioned police work save the day.At the time of his death, both the room and the windows were locked from the inside. There were other peoplein the residence who swore that no one else entered or left the house. To make it more confounding, themurder happened within a five minute window of time.Inspector George Flint is delegated to solve the “murder as a puzzle,” as our author has it. He knows heneeds help, and calls upon Joseph Spector -- the “old magician.” The conjuror of our title. The novel boastsnot one, but three locked room mysteries. Two are murders, one is an art theft.The body count increases by one, in another impossible crime. The press begins looking for “the phantomkiller.” Readers may begin to agree that, as Spector says, they're faced with a “puzzle with too many pieces.”But he is a magician, after all.Tom Mead's website is tommeadauthor.comTRIVIAThe last question (before the holiday break) was:Tim Dorsey writes a mystery series featuring Serge A. Quick update: Kylen and Crystal seem to have been misgendered throughout this full episode. During further research, we discovered that they seem to have preferred "they/them/theirs" pronouns. We sincerely apologize for not doing our full due-diligence to respect their pronouns.That being said, today we're diving into a case that is still ongoing and seems to be turning cold quickly. In the midst of the tragic and senseless murder of Gabby Petitio, we have another double homicide of two equally amazing human beings, Kylen and Crystal. We hope that we can help bring them justice, and at the very least get more of a spotlight on them. (Also, we apologize about the trash audio. Again. But we just purchased a new mic for Sam, so please don't write us off quite yet! We love you guys and your patience!) Again, if you know anything about this case, please reach out to Grand County Sheriff's Office at 435-259-8115. Today's poem is Edith Wharton's "The Autumn Sunset." Remember: rate and review to spread the word. ILeaguered in fireThe wild black promontories of the coast extendTheir savage silhouettes;The sun in universal carnage sets,And, halting higher,The motionless storm-clouds mass their sullen threats,Like an advancing mob in sword-points penned,That, balked, yet stands at bay.Mid-zenith hangs the fascinated dayIn wind-lustrated hollows crystalline,A wan Valkyrie whose wide pinions shineAcross the ensanguined ruins of the fray,And in her hand swings high o’erhead,Above the waster of war,The silver torch-light of the evening starWherewith to search the faces of the dead. IILagooned in gold,Seem not those jetty promontories ratherThe outposts of some ancient land forlorn,Uncomforted of morn,Where old oblivions gather,The melancholy unconsoling foldOf all things that go utterly to deathAnd mix no more, no moreWith life’s perpetually awakening breath?Shall Time not ferry me to such a shore,Over such sailless seas,To walk with hope’s slain importunitiesIn miserable marriage? Nay, shall notAll things be there forgot,Save the sea’s golden barrier and the blackClose-crouching promontories?Dead to all shames, forgotten of all glories,Shall I not wander there, a shadow’s shade,A spectre self-destroyed,So purged of all remembrance and sucked backInto the primal void,That should we on the shore phantasmal meetI should not know the coming of your feet? September 11, 2019 Dear Eric, Nihilism's bad rap may stem from the idea's consequent necessity of doing something about it. As recognition that life has no apparent meaning comes with no ready answers whatsoever. We're left alone then to either stew in despair, or resolve to create meaning in spite of the fact. The former option is unattractive, while the latter option requires very much work. It's no wonder then that nihilism has such a bad name and reputation; for it is a dead-end alley which becomes our existential end or from which we must climb with great difficulty to escape. No wonder few choose this path... How much better to select another road, a seeming ready-made high-road to paradise, crowded with our friends and family and others who believe. Who wouldn't select that other road - or one of the millions like it - for the mere price of our credulity? Nihilism isn't deathAnd it isn't despairOr giving upOr futilityOr neglect...It's just the realizationThat life has no apparent purposeAnd so,We must make some purpose up!Make some purpose up... As if that were easy. But really, it's not too hard a thing to do. There are many models out there to look at - schools of thought, philosophy and religion which have given the matter good consideration and have produced premise, treaties and dogma to communicate what their perspective considers "good." Study these and bring on board the best of what you find. And then live... And while you live take care to learn from both your success and mistakes, and begin a catalog of the best of what you find. These will become your principles. Your own rules to live by in spite the universe offering no such objective guidance beyond mere survival and procreation. And then live your life by the seemingly virtuous rule of law you have formed. Live your law and be always first to criticize your law. Share your principles with others. Ask their opinions regarding soundness, justice and virtue. Be eager to hear and attend all criticisms of what you have made. Prepare not to respond first in defense, but let your initial words be utterances of gratitude to the person who has challenged your belief. And then ask questions seeking your own clarity - really strive to understand what your critic is saying. And then depart to think. Go away to ponder if your challenged principle is truly unsound. And if not, then discard it utterly to the rubbish heap of failed virtue, or modify it if adjustment might salvage perceived virtue. And then go on through life with your improved understanding. Always grateful to those who help us to see better. Always willing to change our minds, our ways and our ideas to better suit reality and the pursuit of what we decide constitutes a well-lived life.
It's a special 4th of July Message as Rev Kev has returned from vacation and is ready to talk about how if we allow God into our lives, He will bless us. That goes for our Nation too! It may not be politically correct to say this in our culture today – but we have been blessed by Almighty God! Today we gather and worship, just as we do every Sunday of every week of every year. We gather to worship a God who has worked to bring us salvation, forgiveness of sins, the ability to live a life with joy, and the eternal rewards that await those that follow Jesus – just like every other week of the year. Except that this Sunday is just a little different, isn’t it? We gather like every other Sunday to worship – but on this day, the day before we as a nation celebrate the Freedoms and privileges that came so dear, we gather to worship the God who has worked to bring our great nation into existence! It may be unpopular for us to say this because our nation is struggling with the idea of God and faith, and whether or not He matters; but we gather today, and celebrate our faith in the God that has changed our personal lives, and the ways in which God has acted in our own nation’s history! This act of worship is nothing new: The Hebrew people often stopped their activities to do this very thing. Even though they as a people went through difficult times, economic downturns, and even military defeats, they continually came back and recognized that the very reason they existed as a people was because God had worked to bring that about. In our passage, the Psalmist writes of God’s blessings on nations. We reference Psalms 33:12-22 12) Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance. 13) The Lord looks from heaven;He sees all the sons of men; 14) From His dwelling place He looks outOn all the inhabitants of the earth, 15) He who fashions the hearts of them all,He who understands all their works. 16) The king is not saved by a mighty army;A warrior is not delivered by great strength. 17) A horse is a false hope for victory;Nor does it deliver anyone by its great strength. 18) Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,On those who hope for His lovingkindness, 19) To deliver their soul from deathAnd to keep them alive in famine. 20) Our soul waits for the Lord;He is our help and our shield. 21) For our heart rejoices in Him,Because we trust in His holy name. 22) Let Your lovingkindness, O Lord, be upon us,According as we have hoped in You. In this Psalm, which was written to honor God and recognize His blessings upon a people, there are a couple of teachings we acknowledge: God chooses those whom He will bless.God watches over the people who choose to follow Him. God chooses those whom He will bless The old phrase was simply, “How odd of God, to choose the Jews.” This was a way of saying that God chose to bless the Jewish people before they were a people – and blessed them, even though no-one knew them, loved them, or cared about them. Indeed, when God chose to work in and through Moses to bring the people out of Egypt, the Jewish nation did not even exist. They were a slave people thrown into a miserable situation, and poor and helpless. They cried out to God and He heard their prayers, and began to work to bring them from slavery to the Promised Land, and make them a people that would stand forever. God “chose” to bless them, form them into a nation, and be their God. That is not so different from the way he has chosen to bless our nation, is it? The earliest settlers here – the Pilgrims – rejoiced that God had brought them safely to our shores, and their first act upon arriving at Plymouth Rock was to kneel and have prayer – thanking God for bringing them here, to begin a new nation that was free from the tyranny of an overpowering government. They also dedicated their new colony to God’s use and glory. Over and again our early leaders reaffirmed their faith in God’s work and blessings, oftentimes writing of their faith, and God’s work in historical events. Our first president, George Washington, wrote often regarding our Christian faith. Here is just one quote: “It is impossible to govern the world without God and the Bible. Of all dispositions and habits that lead to political prosperity, our religion and morality are indispensable supporters.” Our early leaders were not perfect, to be sure; and, we must acknowledge the evil of some of their actions; but within them there was the sense that they were involved in something much larger than themselves – they really believed God was at work! In retrospect we can see that God chose to use them, flawed as they were, and to bless them and guide them in their efforts – to form us and to bless us as a nation! “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance.” (v.12) There is something else here for us as we prepare to celebrate our nation’s birth, and blessings: God watches over the people who choose to follow Him Pslams 34:18-19 18) The Lord is near to the brokenheartedAnd saves those who are crushed in spirit. 19) Many are the afflictions of the righteous,But the Lord delivers him out of them all. The history of God’s people was one of blessings when they were faithful to God, and one of troubles when they rebelled against His leadership. God never required them to be perfect, but He did require that they worship only Him, and make efforts to live according to his will and desires. He was gracious and patient, and fully willing to protect and bless them – as long as they would follow Him in faith! The pattern was the same under Moses, and the Judges, and the Kings – when the people rebelled against God they suffered the consequences, but when they turned from their sin and followed God they were blessed! This is the way God has always worked with His people – He always loves us and desires to bless us – but our sin and rebellion invariably brings suffering and loss. Again, this is the way God has always worked with His people – even in our own nation’s history: Our nation is at its best when we live true to biblical teachings, and at its worst when we reject them: When we rejected the biblical teaching that all are created equal and utilized slavery and prejudice, we brought great misery and destruction to everyone. The slaves and their families suffered immeasurably, and our nation to this day struggles with the emotional impact that slavery has had upon our people.When we rejected the biblical teachings regarding human sexuality and the importance of the family, we began a downward spiral that has damaged the mental and emotional health of millions of children, and threatens the very strength and unity of our nation. When we followed the leadership of God’s people in the past, and our leaders and our people united in prayer after the tragedy of 9-11, our nation became stronger and better than ever before! When Christians united in hurricane relief after Katrina (over 60% of volunteers were Christian!); we saw a nation that was generous and loving, and worked for the common good. When we acknowledge God’s place in our lives God forgives and works and blesses, especially in times of fear and desperation! Our nation is a great nation, blessed by God! We are not perfect; we have profound flaws in our society that have come as a result of rejection of God’s leadership; at the same time, however, God loves us and continues to bless us and make us strong. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance. I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. O magnify the Lord with me, And let us exalt His name together. O taste and see that the Lord is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!" Psalms 33:12; 34:1, 3, 8 What are your biggest takeaways from today's sermon? When there's a gold rush on, the thing to do is not to dig. Instead, sell shovels to all the suckers who think they'll get rich digging for gold. This is one of the lessons that investigative reporter Corey Pein learned when he moved to San Francisco at the height of the Silicon Valley start-up boom. In his analogy, the gold rush is the tech boom, and the suckers are all the start-up wannabes who flock to the Bay Area for a slice of the venture capital pie. A Tear and A Smile 眼泪和微笑 by Khalil Gibran 纪伯伦著 长风译I would not exchange the sorrows of my heartFor the joys of the multitude.And I would not have the tears that sadness makesTo flow from my every part turn into laughter.I would that my life remain a tear and a smile.我不愿用世俗的欢娱来换取内心的悲戚;也不愿让我忧伤的眼泪变成浅薄的嬉笑。我宁愿生活里有眼泪也有微笑。A tear to purify my heart and give me understanding.Of life's secrets and hidden things.A smile to draw me nigh to the sons of my kind andTo be a symbol of my glorification of the gods.眼泪纯净内心,让我明白生活的奥秘;微笑带来良友,是我荣耀上帝的印记。A tear to unite me with those of broken heart;A smile to be a sign of my joy in existence.眼泪使我体会心碎之人的忧伤;微笑是我快乐生活的模样。I would rather that I died in yearning and longing than that I live Weary and despairing.与其在绝望和挣扎中苟活,不如在希翼和盼望中死亡。I want the hunger for love and beauty to be in theDepths of my spirit, for I have seen those who areSatisfied the most wretched of people.I have heard the sigh of those in yearning and Longing, and it is sweeter than the sweetest melody.我渴慕爱情,崇尚完美,因为邪恶使人肮脏污秽。我听过充满渴望的轻唱,它胜过世上最美的乐章。With evening's coming the flower folds her petalsAnd sleeps, embracing her longing.At morning's approach she opens her lips to meetThe sun's kiss.The life of a flower is longing and fulfillment.A tear and a smile.夜幕降临,花儿紧锁心房,拥抱着盼望进入梦乡。晨曦初露,花儿轻启香唇,接受太阳的亲吻。在花儿渴望和满足的生命里,有眼泪和微笑的哲理。The waters of the sea become vapor and rise and comeTogether and area cloud.And the cloud floats above the hills and valleysUntil it meets the gentle breeze, then falls weepingTo the fields and joins with brooks and rivers to Return to the sea, its home.The life of clouds is a parting and a meeting.A tear and a smile.大海的水汽蒸发,汇集成云彩。它飘过丘陵和山谷,在和风吹拂下滋生雨露,雨露飘落大地,汇成小溪和河流,奔回大海,它自己的家乡。云彩离别和重逢的经历,有眼泪和微笑的哲理。And so does the spirit become separated fromThe greater spirit to move in the world of matterAnd pass as a cloud over the mountain of sorrowAnd the plains of joy to meet the breeze of deathAnd return whence it came.To the ocean of Love and Beauty----to God.人的灵魂如同云彩,他告别自己的居所来到大千世界,飘过忧伤的高山,和喜乐的平原。面对死亡的微风,他坦然回乡,那是充满爱和美的海洋,那是上帝的胸膛。
Todayand#8217;s FBA Dharmabyte, and#8220;Death is Certain,and#8221; is an excerpt from the talk and#8220;The Transitoriness of Life and the Certainty of Deathand#8221; by Vajradarshini. Here she talks about disassociating from our own death and how our death really is not that significant. In imagining this, knowing this, there is freedom. The third talk in a five-part series from Tiratanalokaand#8217;s retreat on the and#8216;Four Mind Turningsand#8217; of the Tibetan tradition.
Todayand#8217;s FBA Dharmabyte is by the lovely Vajradarhini speaking again on poetry in the Buddhist tradition. and#8220;Dew in Zen Poetryand#8221; is a beautiful exploration of this well-loved image of impermanence. From the talk and#8220;The Transitoriness of Life and the Certainty of Deathand#8221; given as part of a series on the and#8216;Four Mind Turningsand#8216; of the Tibetan tradition given at Tiratanaloka Retreat Centre, 2005.
FBA Dharmabyte, and#8220;Beginning to Noticeand#8221; Padmavajra takes us far into the strong experience of Going Forth into homelessness where we begin to notice sickness, old age and death. With the end of intoxication, the beginning of deep awareness arises. From the talk and#8220;The Buddha, Hakuin, Birth and Deathand#8221; delivered at Padmaloka Retreat Centre for men as part of the series and#8220;Tangling Eyebrows with Zen Masters.and#8221; (2004)
Todayand#8217;s FBA Dharmabyte is from the talk and#8220;The Transitoriness of Life and the Certainty of Deathand#8221; by Vajradarshini titled Sadness and Awakening.and#8221; This is a beautiful piece on the hardest of subjects. Using zen poetry and a happily wide-ranging series of quotations (from Tibetan lamas to Ezra Pound), Vajradarshini explores her own fatherand#8217;s death as a way to approach attitudes to death and dying.
Todayand#8217;s FBA Dharmabyte, and#8220;Buddhism Beyond Samsaraand#8221; takes us into the reflections of Vajradarsini on practicing purely with insight in mind. Buddhism is not being better at samsara nor is it relying on the material plane. From the talk and#8220;The Transitoriness of Life and the Certainty of Deathand#8220;, part of a five part series titled and#8220;The Four Mind Turnings.and#8221; given at Tiratanaloka Retreat Centre for women training for ordination in the Triratna Buddhist Order.
In todayand#8217;s FBA Dharmabyte, and#8220;Life Gone Forth is Wide Openand#8221;, Padmavajra takes us into the strong experience of Going Forth into homelessness. Sometimes life presents us with extremely difficult choices that seem to set us apart from those we love. Through personal reminiscence and classic Zen poetry that evokes a truly rich awareness, we see the Buddha, Hakuin, Dogen and Ryokan as they struggle to make sense of this fleeting world of form. This excerpt is from the talk and#8220;The Buddha, Hakuin, Birth and Deathand#8221; given at Padmaloka Retreat Centre, 2004 This talk is part of the series and#8220;Tangling Eyebrows with Zen Masters.and#8221;
