In this week's Black World News, Kehinde Andrews makes plain the mirage of the Paris '24 Olympics (26 July 2024 – 11 August 2024) following his family road trip to Lille in France to watch live the (Black) Women of Team USA dominate the Japanese in basketball. He makes plain the assimilationist policy and color-blind approach of France to race; he debunks the myth of "Black" and "White" "genetic superiority" to explain their respective dominance in certain sporting and athletic activities eg Black people in track and White people in swimming. Finally, he makes plain the insidious nature of the patriotism and Diaspora wars in international sporting competitions. - In this week's official guest interview, Kehinde Andrews talks with Dr Robyn C. Spencer-Antoine about her book The Revolution Has Come: Black Power, Gender, and the Black Panther Party in Oakland and the history of women (who made up over 50% of the party), gender, and power in the party. They also discuss her second book project, To Build the World Anew: Black Liberation Politics and the Movement Against the Vietnam War in the context of Palestine, settler colonialism, and the ongoing investment and buy-in of these land grab and dispossession projects. Finally, they touch on Patricia Murphey Robinson, a Black organizer, and psychotherapist who worked with people in many movements, and Dr. Robyn's work curating the @PATarchives on Instagram to spotlight how Patricia Murphy Robinson's unprocessed home archives reframe the Black radical tradition. - Dr Robyn C. Spencer-Antoine is a History and African American Studies professor at Wayne State University (WSU), Detroit, Michigan, where they're developing the Detroit Center for Black Studies. She's a historian of the Black freedom movements, an activist, a Black feminist, a daughter of the Diaspora, and a mother. She is co-founder of the Intersectional Black Panther Party History Project and has written widely on gender and Black power. Her writings have appeared in the Journal of Women's History and Souls as well as The Washington Post, Vibe Magazine, Colorlines, and Truthout. She has received awards for her work from the Mellon Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Association of Black Women Historians. She is completing her second book, Vietnam Blues, on the intersections between the movement for Black liberation and the movement against the US war in Vietnam as a fellow at Harvard's Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History (CWC) in 2023-2024. In addition, she is working on two biographies: Left Traces: Patricia Robinson and the Archive of Black Women's Radicalism and Angela Davis: Radical Icon. - BLACK WORLD NEWS LINKS A'ja Wilson dominates as US women beat Japan 102-76 to open campaign for 8th straight Olympic gold https://olympics.com/en/news/paris-2024-basketball-aja-wilson-scores-double-double-usa-beats-japan WILSON A'ja (A'ja Riyadh Wilson)Athlete Profiles https://olympics.com/en/paris-2024/athlete/a-ja-wilson_1954757 The Patriotism of the Paris Olympics, Paging Doctor Doom, and the Shadow Dockethttps://www.theringer.com/2024/7/30/24209355/patriotism-2024-paris-olympics-paging-doctor-doom-supreme-court-shadow-docket - GUEST LINKS Robyn C. WHAT CATCHES THE EYE AND THE HEART OF GOD Faith “Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.” Hebrews 11:1 FAITH IS NOT HOPING THAT GOD CAN! IT IS KNOWING GOD WILL! And faith is SEEING what the human eye cannot see. 1. Even Small Faith Can Have Huge Impact “Jesus told them. "I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it would move. Nothing would be impossible." Matthew 17:20 “If You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!” And Jesus said to him, “‘If You can?' All things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the boy's father cried out and said, “I do believe; help my unbelief.” Mark 9:22-24 2. The Reward of Your Faith is Directly Tied to the Reliability of Where You Place Your Faith “He is the rock; His deeds are perfect. Everything He does is just and fair. He is a faithful God who does no wrong; how just and upright He is.” Deuteronomy 32:4 3. The BEST Investment of Faith is Being Made Right with God Romans 1:17 This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, "It is through faith that a righteous person has life." Romans 3:22 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. Romans 3:27 Can we boast, then, that we have done anything to be accepted by God? No, because our acquittal is not based on obeying the law. It is based on faith. Romans 4:5 But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners. John 20:31 But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name. Ephesians 2:8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God. If you can trust Jesus with your eternity, you can surely trust Him with your today and your tomorrow. “God said, Look, I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on, whoever believes need not be shaken.” Isaiah 28:16 4. To Build an Unshakeable Faith, I Must Have My Faith Shaken “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.” James 1:2,3 “Sometimes our only way through is a leap of faith.” “Psalm 78:9-12 “The warriors of Ephraim, though armed with bows, turned their backs and fled on the day of battle. 10 They did not keep God's covenant and refused to live by his instructions. 11 They forgot what he had done, the great wonders he had shown them, 12 the miracles he did for their ancestors…” “They did not believe God or trust Him to care for them.” Psalm 78:22 “But in spite of this, the people kept sinning. Despite his wonders, they refused to trust him.” Psalm 78:32 “For it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.” Hebrews 11:6

My guest today is the brilliant and inspiring Ila Edgar, a leadership development coach and trust-builder for organizations and businesses. Ila's story is a testament to the resilience we all require when challenged by life's mental and emotional obstacles. She deeply believes that who we are is how we lead and that being great leaders starts with us. It also requires honesty, looking inside of ourselves and committing to making real changes in our lives. In our conversation today, we talk about early days in her life, the strengths she developed and the challenges she had to overcome that ultimately led her on to the path of leadership coaching. In addition to this, we also cover the themes of resilience, self-compassion, knowing our own boundaries, and embracing vulnerability as keys to our own growth and learning. Most importantly, Ila opens up about serious health struggles she is currently going through and not only what this has taught her about herself, but how it has helped to shape her journey as a wife, mother and coach. As you listen to this episode today, you will see that there is no doubt that Ila is meant to do the work she is doing to serve the world. She is one of a kind and I feel so very fortunate to have had this time with her on the podcast. This was a really touching episode for me. I hope you find the same value in it as I did. When #BlackLivesMatter emerged in 2013, it animated the most consequential Black-led mobilization since the civil rights and Black power era. Today, the hashtag-turned rallying cry is but one expression of a radical reorientation toward Black politics, protest, and political thought. We're joined today by the author of a book about the past 10 years of political movement, Christopher Paul Harris. His book To Build a Black Future examines the spirit and significance of this insurgency, offering a revelatory account of a new political culture—responsive to pain, suffused with joy, and premised on care—emerging from the centuries-long arc of Black rebellion, a tradition that traces back to the Black slave. City Lights LIVE, The New Press, and Princeton University Press celebrate the publication of two new books: “America Purgatory: Prison Imperialism and the Rise of Mass Incarceration” by Benjamin Weber, published by The New Press, and "To Build a Black Future: The Radical Politics of Joy, Pain, and Care” by Christopher Paul Harris, published by Princeton University Press. “American Purgatory” is a vivid work of hidden history that spans the wars to subjugate Native Americans in the mid-nineteenth century, the conquest of the western territories, and the creation of an American empire in Panama, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. "American Purgatory" reveals how “prison imperialism”—the deliberate use of prisons to control restive, subject populations—is written into our national DNA, extending through to our modern era of mass incarceration. Weber also uncovers a surprisingly rich history of prison resistance, from the Seminole Chief Osceola to Assata Shakur—one that invites us to rethink the scope of America's long freedom struggle. To “Build a Black Future” examines the spirit and significance of this insurgency, offering a revelatory account of a new political culture—responsive to pain, suffused with joy, and premised on care—emerging from the centuries-long arc of Black rebellion, a tradition that traces back to the Black slave. Drawing on his own experiences as an activist and organizer, Christopher Paul Harris takes readers inside the Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) to chart the propulsive trajectory of Black politics and thought from the Middle Passage to the present historical moment. Carefully attending to the social forces that produce Black struggle and the contradictions that arise within it, Harris illustrates how M4BL gives voice to an abolitionist praxis that bridges the past, present, and future, outlining a political project at once directed inward to the Black community while issuing an outward challenge to the world. Benjamin Weber is an assistant professor of African American and African Studies at the University of California, Davis. He has worked at the Vera Institute of Justice, Alternate ROOTS, the Marcus Garvey and UNIA Papers Project, and as a public high school teacher in East Los Angeles. He makes his home in Davis, California. Christopher Paul Harris is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Global and International Studies at University of California, Irvine. His research interests range from Black political thought, culture, aesthetics, and social movements to broader questions concerning the possibility of revolutionary transformation in the 21st century. Advancing an abolitionist critique of the capitalist world-system, his work aims to understand the political lives, thought, and cultures of the Black diaspora and the underlying social forces that shape them. Essential reading for the age of #BlackLivesMatter, this visionary and provocative book reveals how the radical politics of joy, pain, and care, in sharp contrast to liberal political thought, can build a Black future that transcends ideology and pushes the boundaries of our political imagination. When #BlackLivesMatter emerged in 2013, it animated the most consequential Black-led mobilization since the civil rights and Black power era. Today, the hashtag turned rallying cry is but one expression of a radical reorientation toward Black politics, protest, and political thought. Annie Joy shares her experiences growing up in the LDS church and what that taught her about judgement, grace and making room for everyone at The Table. She learned to be aware of judgmental thoughts, give grace to others and invite people to consider different perspectives and experiences in discussions among members of the LDS faith or any faith community. In the home, she suggests parents examine their own reactions to their children's questions and doubts without making it about themselves. Agency is honored when kids are given space and autonomy in their exploration to find answers. This is an essential part of creating a safe environment for them to explore their faith journey without judgment as well as to approach uncertainty rather than avoid or run from it. Annie's motto is to treat all with love and kindness. Experiences in her younger years have inspired her present day vision "To Build a Kinder World, One Heart at a Time." In the latest edition of his Search for Meaning podcast, Stephen Wise Temple Senior Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback hosts friend, colleague, collaborator, and author Rabbi Matthew Gewirtz, who has just published his memoir: "To Build a Brave Space: The Making of a Spiritual First Responder."The senior rabbi at Congregation B'nai Jeshurun in New Jersey, Rabbi Gewirtz had finished a manuscript just before the COVID-19 pandemic, but the outbreak forced him to re-frame (and in truth, re-write) the entire book. He did that while guiding his synagogue through unprecedented challenges and tending to the health and wellbeing of his own family. "I had to write the book twice, but the second time, [the publisher] wanted it framed as a memoir," Rabbi Gewirtz says. "He thought that the credibility I would gain from people learning about me as a human being would allow me to make the political commentary I make at the end of the book."Originally, Rabbi Gewirtz rejected the subtitle, "The Making of a Spiritual First Responder.""Who are we to be spiritual first responders after all?" he says. "EMTs and doctors and nurses and frontline workers are working with blood and life-and-death emergencies all the time."His publisher insisted: Clergy like him were serving the soul of people in the same way, and in many instances, throughout the lives of their congregants.Rabbi Gewirtz -- the son of a Hofstra professor, the dyed-in-the-wool New Yorker raised in Manhattan -- immediately thought of September 11, 2001, when he was a mere four years into his rabbinate. He vividly recalls how his senior rabbi Rodeph Sholom directed the clergy team to look up which congregants had offices in the Twin Towers. They divvied up the list and went from apartment building, knocking on doors and ringing doorbells. He recalls entering the apartment of one congregant who died in the attack, and then, years later, counseling that congregant's daughter through years of having to re-live such a personal loss in front of crowds at memorial ceremonies. The two rabbis discuss middle-of-the-night calls and unexpected tragedies, but also the miracles they respond to on a daily basis, from weddings to children born to couples who had spent years trying. Both sports fans, they view their lives through the lens of a baseball player who still knows that he can still hit a home run, even after striking out four times the night before. As they delve into the Jewish perspectives on hope and renewal, they explore the roots of the morning prayer for gratitude, "Modeh Ani," the tragedy in Turkey and Syria, and the current political climate.

Brenda Wensil and Kathryn Heath are Executive Coaches who have spent decades coaching more than 800 women and working with Women Executives, Middle Managers, and Professionals across industries and age groups. They are the co-authors of ‘I Wish I'd Known This: 6 Career-Accelerating Secrets for Women Leaders'. Brenda and Kathryn offer their thoughts on navigating self-doubt in the world of Business Leadership. They share common reasons women feel “held back” from maximizing their potential. They also talk about how to prioritize goals, build a powerful support network, and weed out distractions which lead you away from achieving what you truly desire in your career. Driven by the belief that more Female Leaders equals a better world, Brenda and Kathryn explain, that many women are held back from unlocking their potential because of their own limiting beliefs. By simply changing the story you tell yourself, you completely transform the way you show up at work and in all your relationships, personal and professional. Brenda and Kathryn also speak on the value of your reputation or personal brand, no matter your role in an organization. As a Leader, how you are seen by your teammates and clients is fundamental to your success. They encourage women to simply ask around to get feedback on their strengths and gaps as others see them, and to be ready and willing to adjust how they work and interact with others, if unsatisfied with the answers they hear. Another key to maximizing your reputation is by combining your personal power, or who you are as a person, with your position power as a professional. Brenda and Kathryn ultimately remind us, that Leadership is a skill, and that deliberate goal-setting and consistent, disciplined practice are essential to growing that skill. This podcast is sponsored by InnerProfessional online training programs. With courses geared specifically for Legendary Leaders, InnerProfessional provides an extraordinary catalog of leadership and professional development programs unlike any online training you've experienced before. Key Takeaways: Success in any endeavour starts with “staking yourself out”: getting clear on what you want to accomplish and the type of person you want to become in the process. It's a mistake to go at it alone. Create a support system for yourself as early as possible so you can go further in your career than you ever could by yourself. Leadership is a skill, which means yours can be developed with the right goal and strategy. Great careers are built on strengths. When you know what you're good at, you possess the keys to your professional success. Episode Timeline: [05:02] Introduction to Brenda Wensil & Kathryn Heath. They just kind of drift.” “Leadership is a skill, and you can grow it.” “How do you leverage your platform—your position power—and combine that with who you are as a person—your personal power—and see yourself as an important colleague to your peer group?” “Women are great at strategic planning for their company, but they have to be the CEO of their career.” Connect: Find | Brenda Wensil Business Website: https://www.bravanti.com On LinkedIn: @BrendaWensil Bio: Brenda Wensil is Managing Director & Practice Leader of Bravanti's Leadership Acceleration practice. Note: My guest in this episode, Dr. Earle Labor, died on September 15 at the age of 94. Earle was the world's foremost authority on one of the Art of Manliness' guiding inspirations and lights: Jack London. Earle dedicated his career to London scholarship and his work was pivotal in turning London's literature into a subject of serious study. Earle taught the very first undergraduate and graduate courses devoted to London and penned a hundred articles and ten books about him.Earle not only admired London's devotion to what the author called "the true spirit of romance and adventure," he sought that spirit in his own life. As an undergraduate, Earle started the first weightlifting course at Southern Methodist University and he coached and lifted the SMU team to victory in the 1948 Dallas Open Championships. After college, he and a buddy took an epic road trip, where they did farm work and entered boxing matches to work their way from Texas to Canada. And he served in the U.S. Navy and spent time on a destroyer.I had the privilege of interviewing Earle three times for the AoM podcast. The last time in January 2020, my son and I drove to Earle's home in Shreveport, LA to speak with him in person. To mark Earle's passing, please enjoy this rebroadcast of that conversation. The literature of Jack London has long been given the short shrift by scholars. They say he wrote some good dog stories for boys, but beyond that didn't showcase any literary genius or high-level craftsmanship. Well, my guest today begs to differ with this assessment. His name is Earle Labor. He's the preeminent Jack London scholar and 91 years young. I've had Earle on the podcast two previous times: the first to discuss his landmark Jack London biography, and the second to discuss his own memoir, The Far Music. For this episode, I drove down to Earle's home in Shreveport, Louisiana to talk to Earle about the overlooked literary genius of Jack London and the big themes that London wrote about in his novels and short stories. We begin our discussion with Earle's story of how he became a Jack London scholar and why London's work was historically neglected by academics. We then dig into London's literary themes by first discussing how he used the Klondike as a symbolic proving ground for men and how success in this wilderness depended on one's ability to mold oneself to Jack's "Northland Code." Earle uses excerpts from my favorite London story, "In A Far Country," as well as "To Build a Fire" and The Call of the Wild, to showcase the tenets of this code, and well as London's literary artistry. Earle then explains how London shifted his themes later in his career with his agrarian writing, how his wife Charmian changed his perception of real women and his female characters, and the influence that psychiatrist Carl Jung had on London's last works.Consider this episode a masterclass on the literature of Jack London.Resources Related to the EpisodeEarl's biography of Jack LondonMy first interview with Earle about Jack's epic lifeMy second interview with Earle about "The Era of Bright Expectations"Martin EdenThe Libraries of Famous Men: Jack LondonJack London's Wisdom on Living a Life of Thumos"The Symbolic Wilderness" by Gordon Mills"To Build a Fire""In a Far Country"Descriptions of Manliness: Jack LondonAoM series on Jack London's life"The Sentinel" by Arthur C. Canadian indie-pop band Stars makes almost orchestral pop that has the bonus quality of being danceable. They've also got a knack for vividly descriptive storytelling, built around the dueling vocals of singers Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan. Formed in the early 2000's, Stars has been “remarkably stable” over the years; they enjoy making one another laugh, they've written a play, and even fiction about themselves. Their ninth studio album, From Capelton Hill, covers pandemic shock, explores memory – perhaps with a sepia tinge, and has a strong sense of place. Stars plays remotely for the Soundcheck Podcast. Stars plays a Bandcamp Live-streaming set at 5PM on May 27. Set list: “To Build a Fire”, “Capelton Hill”, "Patterns" Watch "To Build a Fire":
"Then the man drowsed off into what seemed to him the most comfortable and satisfying sleep he had ever known. The dog sat facing him and waiting. The brief day drew to a close in a long, slow twilight. There were no signs of a fire to be made, and, besides, never in the dog's experience had it known a man to sit like that in the snow and make no fire. As the twilight drew on, it's eager yearning for the fire mastered it, and with a great lifting and shifting of forefeet, it whined softly, then flattened its ears down in anticipation of being chidden by the man. But the man remained silent. Later the dog whined loudly. And still, later it crept close to the man and caught the scent of death. This made the animal bristle and back away. A little longer it delayed, howling under the stars that leaped and danced and shone brightly in the cold sky. Then it turned and trotted up the trail in the direction of the camp it knew, where were the other food providers and fire providers."
