Tom and Jenny discuss a strange, somewhat obscure 1982 horror thriller starring James Earl Jones, José Ferrer, Lila Kedrova, Lydia Cornell, Mary Louise Weller, Martin Kove, and Deborah Shelton, in which a couple travel to a remote Greek island searching for a relative and encounter hostile locals and a possible ancient monster. In this episode the FM3 DIVE into a horror film from 1982 that none of the crew had seen or for that matter even heard of called "BLOODTIDE" starring James Earl Jones, Martin Kove, Deborah Shelton and more! This Greek hunk fest got the guys schweaty and ready to hit the beach and do some treasure hunting with Darth Vader himself! But wouldn't you know it, there is a monster on the loose and somebody has to stop it! This weird overlooked flick from the 80's is a trip and Forever Midnight suggests you take that trip at least once, but don't forget your sunblock! Thanks so much to friend of the Podcast Neil Pearlmutter of the local Santa Rosa Roxy 14 Cult Film Series for putting this one on the radar for Josh, Jef and Brian. You can stream BloodTide on TUBI, PLEX or grab a new 4K BLU-RAY from Arrow Video!
This week we're auditioning for the role of a lifetime as DePALMBER: PART DE continues with another example of what feels like well-worn territory for our man of the month: an erotic thriller in which a working class man in show business is forced to be an unlikely hero as he becomes entangled in a murder. It's 1984's Body Double, directed, produced, and co-written from a story by Brian De Palma, and starring Craig Wasson, Melanie Griffith, Gregg Henry, Deborah Shelton, Guy Boyd and Dennis Franz. As De Palma's immediate follow-up to Scarface, it's a brazenly bizarre swing on what was surely a blank check opportunity, and we have to admire the effort. Dripping in Hitchcockian influence with a plot that plays like Rear Window and Vertigo at the same time, it's another terrific showcase of that 80s cool De Palma style that would be pillaged decades later in the Grand Theft Auto video games. Plus: J Mo goes knives out on Wicked, having been held hostage by it for nearly three hours. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, Body Double is not currently streaming in Canada but can be rented on YouTube for $5. Other works referenced in this episode include The Producers (2005), Avengers Endgame, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremact, Doubt, The Manchurian Candidate (2004), The Manchurian Candidate (1962), The Fog (2005), Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Super 8, The Fablemans, West Side Story (2021), Rory Scovel: Religion, Sex & A Few Things In Between, Batman Returns, Batman & Robin, The Game, North by Northwest and Deep Water, among others. We take a quick break from De Palma next week, as our final release before Christmas Day means it's time to celebrate Shaqmas once again! Our annual holiday tradition of covering a selection from the filmography of Shaquille O'Neal continues this year with what is surely the best movie he ever made: 1994's Blue Chips, directed by William Friedkin and co-starring Nick Nolte. And our DePalmber Canon Entry at the end of the month is 1981's Blow Out! Until next week, we'll see you at the movies!!
This week on Erotic Thriller Club we are chatting Brian De Palma's homage to Hitchcock. Do some dogs go to hell? Would you star in a porno to solve the case? Do you believe in g-g-g-ghouls??
“Although he kills his wife in quite a horrible way, he seems like a nice guy to me” The Panel of Peril take a break from polishing their telescope: they've been going at it hard and their forearms are sore. In that downtime they take in the film of the week: Body Double (Brian De Palma, 1984). Jake (Craig Wasson) is a down on his luck actor. His role as a vampire in a B movie is threatened by his crippling claustrophobia and his girlfriend is having an affair. At an acting workshop he meets Sam (Gregg Henry), a fellow actor with a plush spare apartment that overlooks the beautiful Gloria's (Deborah Shelton) abode. What a stroke of luck for Jake! Or is it? A mysterious black-clad “Indian” appears to be stalking Gloria and taunting Jake. But what is his endgame? Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMG8V7Am8zI ********PLOT SPOILER ALERT******** Sam's motives are very much ulterior. He plans to rob/murder Gloria who is actually his wife (!), and has installed a body double in her apartment for Jake to spy on so that Jake can be his alibi… deep breath. No one's saying it isn't a convoluted scheme, but it just might work! Can wet-behind-the-ears Jake decipher Sam's machinations, or will he take the fall for the murderous master of disguise? What the actual flip did the panel make of this one? How the actual flip can they improve upon the villain's dastardly scheme? And who the actual flip will be victorious in this week's competition?

On paper, Hunk, released March 6th, 1987, is your typical 80s beach comedy about the misadventures of a computer nerd who turns into an attractive man called Hunk Golden. However this movie is way deeper and darker than that. We're joined by Sandy Whittem (Illiterature) to delve into the surprisingly entertaining, fantastical and dark-magic-filled world of Hunk, one of the strangest films we've ever covered.
