This week we're auditioning for the role of a lifetime as DePALMBER: PART DE continues with another example of what feels like well-worn territory for our man of the month: an erotic thriller in which a working class man in show business is forced to be an unlikely hero as he becomes entangled in a murder. It's 1984's Body Double, directed, produced, and co-written from a story by Brian De Palma, and starring Craig Wasson, Melanie Griffith, Gregg Henry, Deborah Shelton, Guy Boyd and Dennis Franz. As De Palma's immediate follow-up to Scarface, it's a brazenly bizarre swing on what was surely a blank check opportunity, and we have to admire the effort. Dripping in Hitchcockian influence with a plot that plays like Rear Window and Vertigo at the same time, it's another terrific showcase of that 80s cool De Palma style that would be pillaged decades later in the Grand Theft Auto video games. Plus: J Mo goes knives out on Wicked, having been held hostage by it for nearly three hours. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, Body Double is not currently streaming in Canada but can be rented on YouTube for $5. Other works referenced in this episode include The Producers (2005), Avengers Endgame, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremact, Doubt, The Manchurian Candidate (2004), The Manchurian Candidate (1962), The Fog (2005), Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Super 8, The Fablemans, West Side Story (2021), Rory Scovel: Religion, Sex & A Few Things In Between, Batman Returns, Batman & Robin, The Game, North by Northwest and Deep Water, among others. We take a quick break from De Palma next week, as our final release before Christmas Day means it's time to celebrate Shaqmas once again! Our annual holiday tradition of covering a selection from the filmography of Shaquille O'Neal continues this year with what is surely the best movie he ever made: 1994's Blue Chips, directed by William Friedkin and co-starring Nick Nolte. And our DePalmber Canon Entry at the end of the month is 1981's Blow Out! Until next week, we'll see you at the movies!!

In the gritty underbelly of Chicago, Payback serves up a heaping plate of revenge and betrayal—all wrapped up in a slick, neo-noir package. Starring Mel Gibson as Porter, this 1999 hit plunges viewers into a world where loyalty is as rare as a clean getaway. After being double-crossed by his wife (Maria Bello) and his partner (Gregg Henry) during a heist, Porter finds himself on the wrong end of a bullet and a whole lot of betrayal. Left for dead and robbed of his cut, he rises from the ashes with one thing on his mind: payback. As he navigates a seedy landscape filled with mobsters, corrupt cops, and a femme fatale, Porter's quest for vengeance becomes a thrilling, action-packed ride. Directed by Brian Helgeland, Payback is not just a tale of revenge; it's a study in the moral ambiguities of crime, loyalty, and the lengths one will go to reclaim what's theirs. With sharp dialogue, brutal action sequences, and a tongue-in-cheek humor that keeps you on your toes, this film is a must-watch for fans of the genre. On Couch Potato Theater we celebrate our favorite movies! On this episode we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the action crime drama Payback (1999). Payback is a 1999 American neo-noir action thriller film written and directed by Brian Helgeland in his directorial debut, and starring Mel Gibson, Gregg Henry, Maria Bello, and David Paymer. It is based on the novel The Hunter by Donald E. Westlake using the pseudonym Richard Stark, which had earlier been adapted into the 1967 film noir classic Point Blank, directed by John Boorman and starring Lee Marvin. In 2006, director Brian Helgeland issued a director's cut that differs substantially from the version released by the studio. In this episode of Couch Potato Theater we discuss the huge differences of the theatrical and director's cut of Payback (1999).
Happy New Year! Season 2, episode 5 is here. Our guy Dominic is still home taking it easy, recuperating. As such, Connor, Mark, and Erica talk some surprisingly insider baseball with the incredible journeyman actor Gregg Henry, known to the world for his roles in huge movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, Slither, Payback, etc., and for being in nearly every notable television show since the ‘80s — a great “been in everything” actor, he is better known to us Trek fans for his role as the Arkonian pilot notorious for shooting down Trip Tucker (Trinneer) and having one of those “we are enemies stuck on a planet and don't understand each other” episodes in Enterprise episode “Dawn.” He also played Gallatin, the good hearted bad guy in Star Trek: Insurrection. Notably (for us), he ALSO played Sheriff Bourne in an episode of Firefly. Above and beyond being a real actor's actor, Gregg Henry is also a remarkable blues pianist and musician, known by his full name Gregg Lee Henry, he was kind enough to tickle the upright with his original “You the One.” He discussed working with great directors like Brian de Palma and James Gunn, wearing Trek makeup, fighting with Connor, his politically charged performance as Caesar, and how amazing Angela Lansbury was to work with, and more. We hope you didn't think the Halloween thrills and chills were over yet because if you did think that you'd be sorely mistaken. VERY sore and VERY mistaken. This week we head to the rolling hills of San Francisco with a gaggle of the postiest Post Punks and a brain sucking baby in the SOV Horror police procedural, Night Feeder (1988). Then we take a trip to the woods with Gregg Henry and two big ol' gigglin' hillbilly baby boys in Jeff Lieberman's backwoods slash 'em up classic, Just Before Dawn (1981). JUST BEFORE DAWN (1981) Directed by Jeff Lieberman sees a group of young people – among them Gregg Henry, Chris Lemmon, and Deborah Benson – heading into the Oregon mountains to check out some property one of them has inherited. While camping in the woods, they are attacked by two hillbilly brothers trying to kill them all. At this, they mostly succeed. Pretty standard slasher movie stuff, right? And, yet, Just Before Dawn is anything but. It's merits as a horror movie are substantial, whether it's the first-rate cast, composer Brad Fidel's spooky and sparse score, or the expertly utilized and gorgeously photographed outdoor locations.

This week, Blake and Joe look at the fourth film from Grosse Pointe Blank director George Armitage, 1979's Hot Rod. We hope you enjoy it! And, remember, this podcast is us…breathing.
In 1999, Brian Helgeland wrote and directed his neo-noir action flick, Payback. Payback features the story of career criminal Porter and his pursuit to get back the seventy-thousand (or was it $130k?) dollars that was stolen from him by his old partner Val Resnick. In order to buy his way into the criminal organization, The Outfit, Val convinces Porter's wife to put two bullets in her hubby's back, and Porter will stop at nothing to get what he's owed. Starring Mel Gibson, Gregg Henry, Maria Bello, Lucy Liu, James Coburn, and Kris Kristofferson, Payback made a modest $161 million from a $90 million budget. But, does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent, debate the severity of cold-blooded murder as we determine if we get our money's worth, or if we want revenge for wasting our time.

Hey y'all! It's Pedro and Aidan with (previously known as) Variant Podcast! We have rebranded our podcast, we are now Comic Misfits. A lot of work and dedication came with this change, but most of all, we wanted to be an original podcast that was not being confused for Variant: The Podcast, who started a podcast after us but has a much higher following. Thus, we are Comic Misfits! Our core values remain the same, we aim to bridge the gap between the novice and the superfan within the fandom, so that won't change (just our name and brand). With that being said, on this episode of Comic Misfits, we continue right along our journey through the DC Animated Universe as we talk all things Teen Titans: Judas Contract. Teen Titans: Judas Contract is the 9th film in the DCAU, and it was released in April 2017! The movie is based on The Judas Contract by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez and is the sequel to Justice League vs. Teen Titans. The film features the voices of Christina Ricci, Taissa Farmiga, Miguel Ferrer, Stuart Allan, Brandon Soo Hoo, Jake T. Austin, Kari Wahlgren, Sean Maher, Gregg Henry, and Meg Foster. We give this film a solid 4/5 stars. Take a listen to our review today! The slasher film is one the biggest subgenres of horror films. But how did it come about and gain such popularity? This episode tracks the progression of (mostly) American slashers, focusing on how we got to the most formative years of the genre. ▶️Discussions include: How real-life influences and familiar settings were reflected in ‘60s and ‘70s films, thus inspiring the most popular slasher years; cementing slasher movie tropes; hooks, tonal changes, elevating intellectual and visual creativity as the years progressed; franchising; audience accessibility to slashers; recycling, resuscitation and reinvention of the genre, leading to the next evolutionary step to recapture the magic of the slasher movie trend. ▶️**PICKS OF THE WEEK** 1980s: “One heck of a final scene!” —Lindsay’s Pick, SLEEPAWAY CAMP (1983): A twisted summer camp story with a mysterious killer murdering foul-mouthed bullies.

Two movies based on The Hunter by Donald E. Westlake under the pen name Richard Stark brought Westlake's most famous character, Parker, to the silver screen, but they wouldn't be actually called Parker. Westlake famously protected the character and the name Parker wouldn't be used until after his death when Jason Statham starred in a movie title after the titular character. Point Blank (1967) with Lee Marvin starring as Walker/Parker in a very ethereal adaptation of the novel alongside Angie Dickinson, Keenan Wynn, Caroll O'Connor, and John Vernon was the first to adapt the novel, although now in a contemporary late 60's setting. Near the dawn of the millennium Mel Gibson would star in another contemporary take on the novel in Payback (1999) co-starring Gregg Henry, Maria Bello, David Paymer, Deborah Kara Unger, William Devane, Lucy Liu, Kris Kristofferson, and James Coburn. While adapting the same material, these two films are very different. Invasion of the Remake is the only place where Lee Marvin will be fighting Mel Gibson to see which is the better Parker. This episode is dedicated in the memory of Darwin Cooke who passed away only two days prior to the recording of this episode. He adapted many of the Parker novels into graphic novel form and did them with a passion for the character that may have only been rival to that of Westlake himself. He will be missed. We don't ask for money for the podcast currently but if you enjoyed this episode donate a few bucks to the American or Canadian Cancer Society. In Darwin Cooke's own words "F*ck Cancer!", so let's help put an end to it. Thanks. Also please spread the word about the podcast by sharing, and re-posting to your friends. Joining us in the diner this week is Kirk Howle from the Schlock treatment podcast over at www.schlocktreatment.com and one half of Leopardactyl which can be found on Soundcloud here: http://soundcloud.com/leopardactyland we're going to be talking about two excessively random straight-to-video-in-1986 bad action films:The Patriot (no not the one you're thinking of OR the one with Steven Seagal BUT a different one with Gregg Henry as the star and Leslie Nielson in a serious role!)and Leo Fong's Low Blow which is pretty low and it does blow but doesn't really feature any low blowing, which is confusing!Anyway we guffaw, chuckle, cry with laughter and narrowly avoid getting our minds f**ked through the two movies in one of the funniest couple of hours I have ever spent. So come have a listen! Also there is yet another BRAND NEW songMusic from the Diner can be found at: http://soundcloud.com/diners-dittiesAlso please head to http://aftermoviediner.blogspot.com for the AFTER MOVIE DINER'S ALTERNATIVE OSCARS!You can e-mail us: aftermoviediner@gmail.comYou can follow us on Twitter: @aftermoviedinerSearch for us on Facebook - The Podcast from the After Movie Dinerand please comment, leave feedback, rate and review us on www.talkshoe.com and iTunesWe are also now on www.podbean.com and www.podcastpickle.comThe After Movie Diner Podcast is part ofTHE 2ND UNIT PODCAST NETWORK!Our ALL NEW website - http://2upn.blogspot.com/
