"Stranger Things" is an American television series created by the Duffer Brothers for Netflix. The fifth and final season was released in three volumes, including the finale, in November and December 2025. The show combines elements of horror, science fiction, mystery, coming-of-age, and drama. Set in the 1980s, the series centers on the residents of the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, after a young girl with psychokinetic abilities named Eleven inadvertently creates a wormhole known as the Upside Down at a nearby secretive government research facility, connecting Earth to a hostile realm called the Abyss. The ensemble cast includes Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Cara Buono, Matthew Modine, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Joe Keery, Dacre Montgomery, Sean Astin, Paul Reiser, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Brett Gelman, Linda Hamilton, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Nell Fisher. The Duffer Brothers developed Stranger Things as a blend of investigative drama and supernatural horror, infused with childlike wonder and references to the popular culture of the 1980s. Several thematic and directorial elements were inspired by the works of Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, David Lynch, Stephen King, Wes Craven, H. P. Lovecraft, and FromSoftware. The show also drew inspiration from Cold War-era experiments and conspiracy theories involving secret government programs. The series has received positive reviews throughout its run, with praise for its characterization, atmosphere, acting, direction, writing, and homage to 1980s cinema, making it a touchstone of 1980s nostalgia. It has garnered many accolades and is widely regarded as one of the greatest television shows of all time. Jamie Campbell Bower was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his work and experience making the show, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the show, which is available to watch in full on Netflix and is up for your consideration for this year's Emmy Awards in all eligible categories. Thank you, and enjoy! Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Everything old is new again, especially at this week's box office. The Wayans Brothers' nostalgia-driven sequel Scary Movie opened to a franchise best of $55 million. Unfortunately for Masters of the Universe, the 80s-tv show inspired live action adaptation barely scraped more than $29 million - a true bust for a film that cost more than $170 million to make. Horror darlings Obsession and Backrooms are still ruling the roost at theaters, both having crossed over the $200 million threshold this past weekend. Here's the news you didn't know you wanted, Hugh Jackman is set to star in a Ridley Scott-directed adaptation of the truly classic novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. Adolescence writer Jack Thorne will pen the script that stars Jackman as the pirate Long John Silver himself. The original novel was published in 1883 and has been adapted many times. The project is ready to be bid on by all studios. Netflix has announced an official title and revealed a logo for an upcoming Ghostbusters animated series which will officially be titled Ghostbusters: Nightshift. The series is expected to debut sometime in 2027. The upcoming John Wick spin off series currently titled Caine has added Bill Nighy, Dacre Montgomery, and Mason Thames to the cast. The series is being directed by martial arts master Donnie Yen and is currently in production in Budapest and Hong Kong. Netflix has revealed a first look at Scooby Doo from the upcoming live action Scooby Doo series which will premiere sometime in 2027. A short teaser was also released online to make the reveal. This will be the first time the iconic character will be played by an actual dog. Deadline has reported that Jason Momoa is departing PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures' film adaptation of Helldivers, based on Arrowhead Game Studios' video game franchise, from director Justin Lin. The reason for his departure is unknown.

This week, the BGH gang dives into the meta slasher “Faces of Death” (2026)—a surprisingly entertaining meditation on online violence and its consumption. Inspired by one of the most notorious shockumentaries ever made, this modern horror film explores the blurred line between reality and exploitation.   Along the way, the crew breaks down why Dacre Montgomery's generic handsomeness is actually terrifying, explores the hosts and live viewers experiences with the original shocker, and discusses why content moderation is the scariest job in America. Then things get spicy when Rachel brings up the AI-generated Val Kilmer film nobody asked for. “Faces of Death” is a 2026 American horror film and a reimagining of the infamous 1978 film of the same name. Directed by Daniel Goldhaber (Cam) and co-written with Isa Mazzei (Cam), it stars Barbie Ferreira, Dacre Montgomery, Josie Totah, Aaron Holliday, Jermaine Fowler, and Charli XCX. It's April, so that means it's time for our “No EscApril” series, where we celebrate the wonder of thrillers! Not quite horror, not quite action, that sweet spot in the middle where danger is afoot, and lives are still on the line! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and guest K-Tron discuss Brian De Palma's 1984 entry in the “pro-peeping tom propaganda” subgenre, Body Double! Excessive voyeurism! Open disdain for subtlety! Inept cops! A hotdog-shaped hotdog store! A bizarre and touchy acting class/therapy session! Troy McClure's weird Chemosphere house from The Simpsons! An insane Frankie Goes To Hollywood music video in the middle of the movie! Hide and seek-related trauma! A claustrophobic sardine who can't scream! A platinum blonde 80s vampire! Motion sickness-inducing bed drinking! A blatantly labeled door! Cultural insensitivity! A dizzying and confusing makeout session! A disturbing drill with a surprisingly short power cord! The Gone with the Wind of adult films!  A random Nostromo hat from Alien! R-rated end credits! Rear projection and matte paintings! Great cinematography and camerawork, including several split diopter shots! An excellent musical score from Pino Donaggio! A fun cast that includes Dennis Franz, Barbara Crampton in her first role, Craig Wasson being convincingly pervy, and a fearless Melanie Griffith! All that and more in this unapologetically 80s thriller that explores the seedy underbelly of Hollywood, and may be the pinnacle of HitchSchlock! In addition, Tim recommends Sam Raimi's Send Help, K-Tron discusses the trippy 1961 film The Mask, while Alex gives his spoiler-free thoughts on Lee Cronin's The Mummy, the new Faces of Death, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and the Netflix shark thriller Thrash! Jose, Mike, and guest Brian from Lucky Find Comics break down every gruesome detail of IFC/Shudder's Faces of Death remake — from Dacre Montgomery's twitchy, OCD-informed performance to the question of whether that final girl ending earns the whole messy ride. They dig into the movie's fascinating meta premise (a killer remaking the original death tapes), the De Palma split screen that should've happened more, the Don't F**k With Cats second act that genuinely works, and the bumbling cops that nearly tank the third. Brian brings his true crime psychology lens to the villain's motivation, and the crew debates whether Margot's haunting final upload is a victory or the beginning of something darker. Also on the table: the Exorcist taxi shot, the Charli XCX cameo, the lipstick knife backstory nobody asked for but Brian delivered anyway, and the Shudder franchise potential that could make this the next VHS.Two watches. We discuss Barbie Ferreira's performance as a content moderator who descends into an obsessive spiral after discovering a series of violent videos that mimic the original film's most gruesome moments. In this deep dive, we break down how the film tackles our collective desensitization to online violence and whether the "meta" layer of the 1978 film existing in this universe actually works. We also look at the supporting cast — including Dacre Montgomery and Charli XCX — and discuss where this sits in the current landscape of extreme cinema. Starring Barbie Ferreira (Euphoria, Nope) and Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things, Elvis), the new Faces of Death arrives in theaters April 10, 2026, reimagined for the digital age by director Daniel Goldhaber and producer/co-writer Isa Mazzei (Cam, How to Blow Up a Pipeline). The horror film follows a social media content moderator with her own inadvertent Internet fame (Ferreira) who discovers disturbing videos that may be reenactments, or something happening in real time. When she can't ignore the videos any longer, she sets out to investigate and discovers a serial killer (Montgomery) thriving on his own social media fame. The story builds on the original film's infamous “is it real or not?” concept, placing it inside today's nonstop content stream. And in this episode of Talking Strange, the cast talk with host Aaron Sagers about their exposure to the original taboo horror franchise, as well as internet horror, viral media, and the unsettling psychology behind watching the unwatchable. The film also stars Josie Totah (Saved by the Bell, The Buccaneers), Jermaine Fowler (Coming 2 America, Sorry to Bother You), and Charli XCX (The Moment, Mother Mary).Would you keep watching if you didn't know it was fake? _______________________________________________________________ The Talking Strange Show with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, as well as experts in all things strange and unexplained. With two feature films under his belt, Samuel Van Grinsven has quickly become a vital voice in Australian cinema. His feature debut, the lurid and sumptuous 2019 queer drama Sequin in a Blue Room, utilised neon lights and lingering shots of yearning to amplify the sense of lead actor Conor Leach's youthful Sequin finding his place in a new, inviting world. With his follow up feature, Went Up the Hill, Samuel, alongside regular co-writer Jory Anast, explores facets of grief through a gothic possession drama. Here we follow Jack (Dacre Montgomery) who returns home to New Zealand for the funeral of his mother. There, he forms a fractious bond with Jill (Vicky Krieps), the widow of his mother. Where Sequin in a Blue Room explored different shades of blue, from bright neons to dark navy's, Went Up the Hill immerses viewers in shades of grey, placing Jack and Jill in a brutalist style home overlooking a cold lake. This is a film that's hard to shake. I first saw Went Up the Hill over a year ago now and there are moments in the film which have lingered in my mind in a way that that haunts my dreams. The pairing of Dacre Montgomery and Vicky Krieps is a masterful one, with the two exploring emotionality in a way that we rarely get to see on screen in an Australian film. It is, ostensibly, a film about grief and the loss of someone in your life. For Jack, as an estranged son, he has grappled with processing that grief while his mother was alive, making her true passing feel like a new advent of grief and loss. For Jill, that grief is amplified by the arrival of Jack at her partners house, and what that means for her ability to mourn the loss of her partner. These aspects, and many more, are tenderly explored in the film.In the following conversation, recorded ahead of the films screening at the Melbourne International Film Festival, Samuel talks about that colour palette for the film, while also exploring the creative path to exploring grief on screen. At the end of this interview, I misquote the title of Max Porter's essential book about grief, his 2015 novella titled Grief is the Thing with Feathers. I want to read a quote from that book which I feel touches on what this film is about 'Ghosts do not haunt, they regress. Just as when you need to go to sleep you think of trees or lawns, you are taking instant symbolic refuge in a ready-made iconography of early safety and satisfaction. That exact place is where ghosts go.'Went Up the Hill arrives in Australian cinemas on 11 September. It is a film that demands a big screen viewing.Read Nadine Whitney's review of Went Up the Hill here and listen to the interview with Dacre Montgomery here. Hosted on Acast. Meanwhile, Hopper (David Harbour, Black Widow, Hellboy), Joyce (Winona Ryder, Beetlejuice, Heathers), and Murray (Brett Gelman, Fleabag, The Other Guys) infiltrate the Russian base beneath the mall. In Episode 8, “The Battle of Starcourt,” emotions run high as the group stages an epic final stand against the Mind Flayer. Hopper and Joyce attempt to shut down the gate to the Upside Down, leading to a tragic and emotional climax, while Billy makes a heroic sacrifice to save Eleven. Tune in as the program keeps the holiday season rolling onward for the second week of December! This time around, filmmaker friend Robyn Zabukovec (https://twitter.com/thefinalgirly?s=21) hops back into her guest seat for a breakdown of Better Watch Out, the 2016 Christmas horror-comedy that follows a 17-year-old babysitter and a couple adolescent boys as they try to fend off a home invasion during Christmastime. An arachnophobic actor summoning up the guts to work with real huntsman spiders on set, a PSA against drunk driving, and a thematic correlation that this movie may share with Adventure Time comprise some of the talking points for this episode. Directed by Chris Peckover, Better Watch Out stars Olivia DeJonge, Levi Miller, Ed Oxenbould, Aleks Mikic, Dacre Montgomery, Virginia Madsen, and Patrick Warburton. Adelaide Film Festival Interview: Actor Dacre Montgomery on Went Up the Hill

Director Samuel Van Grinsven returns to our screens with his sophomore feature film, Went Up the Hill, a powerful drama about an abandoned child, Jack (Dacre Montgomery), attending the wake of a mother he never knew, and encountering her grieving widow, Jill (Vicky Krieps). As Jack and Jill navigate the fractured existence they find themselves in, Elizabeth's spirit emerges in curious and strange ways by possessing each character, resulting in a narrative that flows into the realm of being a possession drama, while never truly immersing itself in the genre expectations that one might have when they hear that this a film with a 'grief driven possession narrative'. Like Samuel's first film, Sequin in a Blue Room, there's an unexpected nature to Went Up the Hill which comes from a foundational level, and is realised in the films sound design, its choice of location - a remote farm in Aotearoa/New Zealand - and the notion that this is a triple hander film delivered by two powerful, impactful performances from Dacre and Vicky. There's an emotional vulnerability to the film that reveals itself as it progresses in a way that feels real and lived-in. How that emotional vulnerability was achieved is what's explored and discussed in the following conversation with Dacre Montgomery, recorded ahead of the films Australian premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival on Saturday 26 October, where Dacre will be in attendance, and Sunday 3 November. In the following interview, Dacre talk about his studies at WAAPA, the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, before discussing the tangible aspects of his performance that helped Vicky and himself ground their characters in the moment, while also being able to immerse themselves in the role of Elizabeth as she possesses their characters. Went Up the Hill is another towering achievement of emotional filmmaking from Samuel Van Grinsven, a filmmaker who is defiantly making his mark on global cinema with stories that feel deeply personal, yet completely universal at the same time. For our second round-up reviews of horror films that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, special guest Joe Lipsett and I cover four more horror films. We start with two ghost stories: the frosty New Zealand drama Went Up the Hill, directed by Samuel Van Grinsven and starring Dacre Montgomery and Vicky Krieps; and the rambunctious Taiwanese horror comedy Dead Talents Society, directed by John Hsu and starring Gingle Wang. We also take a look at Scott Beck and Bryan Woods' psychological puzzle box thriller, Heretic, featuring a charmingly sinister Hugh Grant, as well as Joseph Kahn's monster-on-the-loose horror comedy Ick, starring Brandon Routh and Malina Weissman.
