Amanda Baldwin never considered herself an entrepreneur because she's technically not a founder. But her mindset shifted when she won Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2022. Amanda earned this distinction as a first-time CEO of Supergoop! the first protective skincare brand that puts SPF at the forefront because she has been breaking boundaries and innovating in her role from day one. Supergoop!'s mission is to change how the world thinks about sunscreen through its clean, feel-good, highly innovative formulas that are fun and easy to use daily. She has taken the brand to places no other sunscreen category has gone before. Amanda was also recently named one of the top 25 Women in Consumer HealthTech and a Woman of Influence by the New York Business Journal. Amanda is a veteran of the beauty and finance industries, but this role as CEO is her first. Under her leadership for the past seven years, the company has grown well over 20x, become highly profitable, and secured a majority investment from Blackstone Growth, Blackstone's platform backing the next generation of category-creating brands. Beginner's luck? No way. Her educational and experience pedigree has shaped who she is today. She oversees the entirety of the organization, setting its strategy for growth, building a world-class team, and leading the company's marketing, sales, product development, operations, and finance divisions. Before joining Supergoop! Amanda was a member of the operating team at L Catterton with a particular focus on the beauty sector. Prior to L Catterton, she led the omnichannel marketing strategy of Dior Beauty at LVMH, Inc. and held several positions at Clinique, a part of The Estee Lauder Companies. Her career began in finance as a private equity investor at Apax Partners and an investment banking analyst at Goldman Sachs. In this episode, Amanda spills the secrets to her success, and spoiler alert: it involves putting in the hard work. We discuss what it means to innovate in a category, her views on marketing and partnerships, and why one of the biggest challenges of entrepreneurship is that you can see the big, big, big, big picture, but that doesn't mean you can do all of it right away. We dive deep into what she attributes to her success in gaining management's trust to test, learn, and iterate. She shares how she thinks about leadership, the matchmaking process of hiring, and why it's not just about knowing how to do the job but LOVING to do the job and how candidates can stand out from the pack. In this podcast episode, Dr Teo Wan Lin talks about the latest from Dior research, which tells us that the eyes are not just a significant part of our appearance, but also relevant in terms of evolutionary psychology. The Dior Eye Power Study uses occulometry to determine how individuals perceive age based on the appearance of the eyes alone. The key biological processes behind the skin signs of eye aging have been shown to be related to mother cells, which is specifically targeted by the latest Capture Totale Eye Serum with its active ingredients the patented Longoza extract and active Rye extract. It also contains acetylated hyaluronic acid, which can last 10 times longer in the eye area. The 360 CRYO-FLEX applicator also provides mechanical stimulation in the form of massage for optimal collagen production, besides having additional cooling properties that are anti-inflammatory. Listen to find out more about how this patented applicator works to enhance the innate biological activity of the active ingredients in this Super Potent Eye Serum first demonstrated in the Capture Totale Serum. Fanny was raised in Rwanda, studied in France, and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in fashion where she had a chance encounter with Dior’s Jérôme Pulis - a meeting that would kick start her career within the luxury house. I first encountered Marie Griffin during the annual Harvard Undergraduate Women in Business Intercollegiate Business Convention, where she was delivering a keynote speech. During her speech, Marie spoke of her journey from being an editor at Seventeen Magazine, to working in Paris, to starting her own namesake company and working with clients that range from Hermes to Dior Beauty to the Wall Street Journal. What was most fascinating about Marie, besides her adventurous journey and career, was a program and guide she created titled, "What's Your CATNIP?™"––an immersive talk about the power that one possesses when one is in-tune with the qualities that one unique.Seeing that we're all about impact here at The Catalyst and that Marie's talk was all about leveraging one's uniqueness for maximum impact across all areas of our life, I knew I needed to have on The Catalyst to discuss more.In this episode, I spoke with Marie and her sister, Bunky, about their journeys to creating their namesake company, the power of CATNIP, and the importance of knowing oneself. To find out more about What's Your CATNIP?™, visit the Griffin Marketing and PR website here.

The chat with Fancy was literally overflowing with gems, it had to become a two-parter! Continuing last week's conversation about personal branding Lisa Francoeur Mesa of Fancyfied is shedding light on the steps you can take to first set your own "personal company culture and values". Why does this matter? Because When you have our yown personal company values we are better able to share it with others and then attract the right opportunities, i.e. the right advisor, that perfect job, that ideal research area. And also important, Lisa shares how your personal company culture and values helps you to remain authentic and genuine in every space you occupy, not just the academic space. A little more about Lisa aka Fancy: While she kicked off her career as a Fashion Stylist working with Alicia Keys, Paris Hilton, Lil Wayne and Shakira--motivational speaking, empowerment coaching, and personal branding are her passions. She is the founder of the empowerment lifestyle brand Fancyfied and her vision is to scale empowerment globally. She puts her vision into action by "helping people harness the power of positivity and unity to create, new and favorable possibilities". She has partnered with AARP, LinkedIn, McKinsey, LVMH’s (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy) Guerlain & Dior Beauty on events, workshops, talks, panels, etc. to do so. She's been featured in Yahoo Finance, Cosmopolitan, Michigan Chronicle & Black Enterprise. Follow and connect with Fancy on Insta: @fancyfied
Whether you're heading to graduate school or finishing up another year (congrats!) your personal brand is critical. Gary Vee says it well, "Your personal brand is your reputation. And your reputation in perpetuity is the foundation of your career." On your already long list of to-do's as a scholar you also have to spend time establishing your authority in the classroom, at conferences and now on #academictwitter. If you don't know the first thing about personal branding, listen to the first part of this 2-episode interview with Lisa Francoeur Mesa of Fancyfied, where she shares her story and provides the reasoning behind why you need to care about your personal brand. We got into Karen's life story and her fascinating journey to this point. She also shared some great advice for anyone interested in growing their social media presence. As a result, this episode is a little longer than usual. Karen is a fashion, beauty and lifestyle influencer whose followers are mostly women aged 18-34 located in the USA, UAE and KSA. She has worked with numerous, diverse brands including Dior Beauty, Louis Vuitton, Apple, Jo Malone and Cadillac. Karen is busy! She has a husband, three children under the age of four and a hectic work travel schedule. Karen is a big believer that women can “do it all” and is a passionate cheerleader of women everywhere. We had an animated chat about all things “influencer”: I asked Karen what she does on a daily basis and how she maintains a balance between glitz and reality. We talked about the recent reveal of her skin condition and how her followers reacted to it. We discussed how Karen became one of the region’s biggest influencers and how she curates her digital content. The burden of scrutiny also came up – including the need for thick skin! Finally, Karen gave us some tips on how to take strong photographs and how to build one’s following on Instagram. My favorite quote was: “you can grow horizontally or vertically”. I think it’s applicable in many different contexts. You can find Karen Wazen on Instagram @karenwazenb and YouTube.
