Sephora has launched numerous new brands in recent months, many of them buzzy and beloved — but perhaps none has been as hotly anticipated as Ultra Violette (that's pronounced "violet"), the Aussie sunscreen brand first launched in 2018. Sephora marks the brand's official debut into the U.S. market — a landmark occasion, because, as co-founder Bec Jefferd said on this week's episode of The Glossy Beauty Podcast, "You can't be a serious global beauty brand if you aren't in the U.S." That's in spite of the fact that the brand has already launched in 29 other markets. Jefferd and co-founder Ava Matthews met as coworkers at Mecca, the premier Australian beauty retailer. Growing up in Australia, sun protection is a focus, even in childhood, given the country's climate and high skin cancer rates, Matthews said. Still, in 2016, when they began ideation for the brand, the duo saw the opportunity for a brand that approached the category differently. "[Sunscreen] wasn't at the center of a skin-care routine. We were talking about it as a skin cancer preventative or something to wear in summer, even in Australia," Matthews said. "There were a lot of people talking about sun care in a serious way, in terms of [skin] cancer, but no one talking about sun care as a kind of prestige skin-care product." For reference, Supergoop launched in 2007, as did Coola; while Vacation launched in 2021, as did fellow Aussie sunscreen brand Naked Sundays. Ultra Violette, with its brightly colored packaging and elegant formulas, quickly became one of the hottest sunscreen brands on the market — its unavailability in the States only added to its cool factor. In-the-know editors got it overseas or had friends bring it back when they traveled — it became ubiquitous in chic poolside pics. As recently as 2021, Matthews and Jefferd had no plans to launch in the States, but now, with formulas they've deemed just as good as their Aussie counterparts and the promise of a new broad-spectrum filter likely soon to be approved in the U.S., the time was right. And though the U.S. has not approved a new filter since 1999, 2026 might change that. As of March 28, the brand is on Sephora.com and in-store at all doors. As for the marketing for the Sephora launch, influencer partnerships are about to kick off, mailers have gone out, and a New York City breakfast, co-hosted by Tinx has been held. As Matthews put it, "We're really not prepared to fuck this up." The U.S. range features five products, to start, four sunscreens and one lip product — with SPF, of course — in two shades. Prices range from $22-$40. In 2024, the brand closed a 15 million Australian-dollar minority investment from equity firm Aria Growth Partners. In this episode of The Glossy Beauty Podcast, the co-founders discuss why it finally made sense to launch stateside, why there's promise in the long-awaited new sunscreen filters in the U.S. and who the Ultra Violette customer is, especially as the sunscreen market has become more crowded.
When a family friend is diagnosed with skin cancer, Holly Thaggard polls a bunch a skin care chemists and comes up with the Unseen Sunscreen. Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick in business partner Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients, so here's one of those. [No Bull RV Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to The Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young here with Stephen Semple, and we're talking about empires. And so Stephen said we're going to revisit one. And I think really, Stephen, what you're doing is just testing my ability to remember shit. Supergoop is what you told me, that it rings a bell, but help me out here. Stephen Semple: This is a rerecording because we did one recording, which didn't work out so well, and here I am in a hotel and you immediately informed me, "Boy, the microphone doesn't sound so good, so we might be recording it again in the future." Dave Young: It'll be Supergoop part three. Oh, dear. On the plus side, the listener doesn't remember this episode because it was never released. Stephen Semple: No, that's true. Dave Young: Okay, good. Stephen Semple: That's true because we had some real recording issues that we could not recover from. Dave Young: All right, we get another mulligan on Supergoop. Stephen Semple: Supergoop, for those who don't know, is a sunscreen and- Dave Young: Oh, that makes sense. Stephen Semple: ... basically- Dave Young: Now it sort of rings a bell. I think probably. Stephen Semple: It sort of rings a bell, does it? And in 2022, Supergoop did $250 million in sales, so that's- Dave Young: That's a lot of goop. Stephen Semple: That's a lot of goop. It was started in 2007 by Holly Thaggard who's from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. And she has no background in cosmetics or sunscreens or any of those things, so again, another one of these empires that came from somebody completely from outside the industry. Dave Young: She wasn't a Nickelodeon child star or anything like that? Stephen Semple: No, she was none of those things. Dave Young: I'm looking for something goop related. Stephen Semple: Well, that'll come. That'll come. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: She started in 2007, and the inspiration started in 2005 when she had a close family friend who was diagnosed with skin cancer. And what she found out was that basically 70% of people don't wear sunscreen regularly, and you really need to be wearing it, it's not just about the beach, you really need to be wearing it all the time. And this whole issue with this skin cancer diagnosis sent her down this path of doing a lot of research. She had an entrepreneurial bent. Both of her parents were entrepreneurs, and she started a business when she was in high school. Dave Young: Oh, wow. Stephen Semple: She played the harp. Dave Young: That was a bigger reminder to me than the goop. Stephen Semple: She started Holly the Harp in high school, and she would go on weekends to country clubs and things along this lines, and she charged $100 an hour because there was no competition. Here she's this kid in high school charging a hundred bucks an hour going around playing the harp. Dave Young: Cool. Stephen Semple: Now, at one point she went into teaching and there was a bunch of things that fell apart on that. And there's a certain point where her brother moves to the Dallas area and she's helping her brother move. And she looks around and she's like, wow, this is a pretty swanky neighborhood and there's all these country clubs around,...

These past few years we've noticed something interesting in the retail industry – small brands are turning “boring” pantry staples into products that are actually really cool. And one of those brands is “Supergoop!” sunscreen – they turned a product in a category that seemed so set in its ways into something fun that we all should be wearing every day. Realizing the potential of Supergoop!, Amanda Baldwin left her high-end Wall Street job to step into the role of CEO six years ago. Since then, the company has not only become highly profitable, it's also grown over 30x and secured a majority investment from Blackstone Growth. Listen to the episode to hear more about Amanda Baldwin's winding career journey (from LVMH to Catterton) and what she's learned about spotting “brands with a capital B” along the way. In 2005, the trajectory of Holly Thaggard's life completely changed when a good friend of hers was diagnosed with skin cancer. Holly realized that most people weren't taking sunscreen seriously, so she sidelined her vocation as a harpist to dive headfirst into the unfamiliar world of SPF. After a false start trying to market her sunscreen to elementary schools, Holly pivoted to retail, hiring a publicist she could barely afford. She eventually got her products into Sephora, a success that helped turn Supergoop! into a multi-million dollar brand. This episode was produced by James Delahoussaye, with music by Ramtin Arablouei. It was edited by Neva Grant. You can follow HIBT on Twitter & Instagram, and email us at hibt@id.wondery.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Amanda Baldwin never considered herself an entrepreneur because she's technically not a founder. But her mindset shifted when she won Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2022. Amanda earned this distinction as a first-time CEO of Supergoop! the first protective skincare brand that puts SPF at the forefront because she has been breaking boundaries and innovating in her role from day one. Supergoop!'s mission is to change how the world thinks about sunscreen through its clean, feel-good, highly innovative formulas that are fun and easy to use daily. She has taken the brand to places no other sunscreen category has gone before. Amanda was also recently named one of the top 25 Women in Consumer HealthTech and a Woman of Influence by the New York Business Journal. Amanda is a veteran of the beauty and finance industries, but this role as CEO is her first. Under her leadership for the past seven years, the company has grown well over 20x, become highly profitable, and secured a majority investment from Blackstone Growth, Blackstone's platform backing the next generation of category-creating brands. Beginner's luck? No way. Her educational and experience pedigree has shaped who she is today. She oversees the entirety of the organization, setting its strategy for growth, building a world-class team, and leading the company's marketing, sales, product development, operations, and finance divisions. Before joining Supergoop! Amanda was a member of the operating team at L Catterton with a particular focus on the beauty sector. Prior to L Catterton, she led the omnichannel marketing strategy of Dior Beauty at LVMH, Inc. and held several positions at Clinique, a part of The Estee Lauder Companies. Her career began in finance as a private equity investor at Apax Partners and an investment banking analyst at Goldman Sachs. In this episode, Amanda spills the secrets to her success, and spoiler alert: it involves putting in the hard work. We discuss what it means to innovate in a category, her views on marketing and partnerships, and why one of the biggest challenges of entrepreneurship is that you can see the big, big, big, big picture, but that doesn't mean you can do all of it right away. We dive deep into what she attributes to her success in gaining management's trust to test, learn, and iterate. She shares how she thinks about leadership, the matchmaking process of hiring, and why it's not just about knowing how to do the job but LOVING to do the job and how candidates can stand out from the pack. That passion drove her to create her multimillion-dollar skincare company, Supergoop!, which started turning the world of suncare products on its end when it launched in 2007. Last year, Supergoop! reached $250 million in sales. She combined her sunscreen with a curriculum on the importance of sun protection, which she launched in private schools. At the same time, she kept building a luxurious yet fun brand that consumers really wanted to make a part of their morning routines—both for themselves and their children. Listen to Nathan and Holly discuss: Her background in education Starting Supergoop! in response to her friend's cancer diagnosis Writing a curriculum instead of a business plan Speaking to the U.S. Congress about skin protection Pitching her products door to door at private schools The unexpected partnership with Sephora Solving a problem for a customer that they didn't know existed Having the founder of Burt's Bees as a mentor Why you can't manufacture authenticity And much more beauty industry advice... Keta Burke-Williams, founder of “unconventional yet intimate” fragrance brand Ourside was just what the industry of traditionally Eurocentric fragrance needed to shake things up. As the daughter of a Jamaican mother and African American father growing up in Dayton, Ohio, Keta never quite felt like she fit in and was always looking for ways to escape into new experiences, particularly through scent. In this bonus episode, we are talking about how working with a recruiter can help when you are looking for a job in the beauty industry. My guest is Brianna Blackwood-Mallory, a compassionate recruiter and inclusivity advocate who runs Königin Consulting & Recruiting. She shares the circuiritous path she took to her current role which included studying Chinese Language and Literature at Vassar College, to working as an editor in Berlin following graduation. Brianna found her calling in recruiting by first working on the marketing side of the industry but decided that she would rather get more involved in the sales side of business. Brianna began by recruiting for multiple roles for Google before transitioning to work with a creative firm where she got a chance to find candidates for various beauty roles working with companies ranging from Estée Lauder, to Supergoop and Milk Makeup, among others. And decided that it would be one of her concentrations. Brianna shares her candid thoughts on why she decided to approach recruiting holistically instead of checking a box and why it is important to create relationships with both the candidate and the companies she works with. The top things you need to do before you are ready to work with someone like herself (hint: work on that LinkedIn profile). And why the beauty industry is selling itself short by not being open to candidate that lack direct experience. Plus, we talk about how many interviews you should expect, why ghosting is a bad reflection on brands, and why networking matters.

Behind the glamour of the beauty industry is the fast-paced corporate pulse keeping it afloat. Marketing veteran and former Wall Street investor Amanda Baldwin knows the intricacies and nuances of both. After years of working with some of the most established beauty brands in the world, Amanda made the bold decision to start fresh when she met the founder of Supergoop!. The skincare brand, with a specialization in sunscreen, offered something special through its product, mission, and story. With Amanda as CEO, Supergoop! has skyrocketed from a startup to a massive global beauty brand, growing over twenty times its size in just five years. In this episode of Redefiners, Clarke and Hoda sit down with Amanda to discuss how her unique perspective on branding (with a capital B!) can be applied across industries. Listen in to why Amanda believes that chasing trends is a brand killer, how she learned to embrace her strengths, and how the satisfaction of building a business from scratch is worth the blurring of work-life balance. We'll also hear from Margot McShane, a Managing director in our San Francisco office. She'll explain how top executives can engage and retain women leaders in their organizations. During this episode of BRAVE COMMERCE, Amanda Baldwin, CEO of Supergoop, shares how she aligns the brand's mission with a focus on consistent incremental profitability.Supergoop, founded by Holly Thaggard, began with the question: how to make a product that creates joy and put the talent and strategy behind that idea? Amanda explains the importance of building a well-rounded team that matches the goals of the brand in order to scale effectively. While you may know Maria Sharapova from her time as a decorated, professional tennis player, her accomplishments expand far beyond that. Since retiring from tennis in 2020, Sharapova has been busy building her investment and business portfolios. Currently, Sharapova is a board member of Moncler, among other brands, and she founded premium candy brand Sugarpova in 2012. Aside from her business endeavors, Sharapova is also an investor in wellness and beauty brands, including Bala Bangles, Therabody and Supergoop! And on top of that, she became a new mother in July 2022. Though Sharapova is juggling many hats, she said her main focuses are motherhood and continuing to build upon her authority in the investor space. "[I'm looking forward to] continuing to align with brands that have incredibly strong foundations. It's a tough time for many people that are entrepreneurs," Sharapova shared on the latest episode of The Glossy Podcast. "Investing your time and finances into the stage in a company when no one is really taking chances on people is ultimately where I'd like to step in and see opportunity."

When was the first time you realized that you need to wear SPF not just during the summer, but every damn day of the year? For elementary school teacher Holly Thaggard, it was a lightbulb moment that occurred after a close friend was struck with skin cancer in 2005, and the start of an entrepreneurial career that would lead to her lifelong dedication to suncare advocacy in schools – and the birth of Supergoop!, now a staple in many a glowy girl's skincare routine. In today's episode, you'll find out how the industry's biggest sunscreen darling changed the game completely, introducing the idea of a “sunscreen wardrobe” that now offers over 40 different ways to apply every single day (PS - three units of Supergoop!'s iconic Unseen Sunscreen now sell every single minute). You'll hear why turning down Sephora was the key to becoming one of their best-sellers. Plus, Holly gives us an easy-to-understand explainer on everything you want to know about sunscreen now, like: What's behind the rise in combination sunscreens that combine both chemical and mineral filters What a PA+ rating means on a label and why it's important Whether your car window is actually protecting you from UV rays The fastest-growing area of the body where doctors are spotting skin cancer amongst women today How to negotiate the vitamin D vs sunscreen debate in real life Why you still need to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, no matter how high the SPF factor is Her personal SPF layering technique – including how to reapply over makeup throughout the day Get social with us and let us know what you think of the episode! If you're wearing sunscreen every day (which I'm sure you do, Superwoman!), then you're already following the number-one rule for sun protection. The 2nd rule – proper re-application – is just as important, however. See, friction, heat, sweat, and other environmental factors remove sunscreen off of our skin. In fact, it gets removed every 2 hours more or less. And so does your sun protection. With that, as an introduction for Skin Cancer Awareness Month, I'll teach you how to reapply your sunscreen with success every day. Sun protection may never be perfect 24/7 but every minute matters. IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT: Methods for making sunscreen re-application easier Sunscreen reapplication methods for various situations Sunscreen products that are perfect for helping you re-apply sunscreen on-the-go RESOURCES: Want easy access to my hand-selected sunscreens for each skin type?
