Mitch Matthews, a top success coach and host of the Dream, Think, Do Podcast, introduces his approach focused on ambitious dreaming, strategic thinking, and taking action. He underscores the importance of giving clients room to dream, followed by thoughtful planning and actionable steps. Mitch questions the prevailing hustle culture, promoting a balance between ambition and contentment, anchored in joy that aligns with core values. He advocates for valuing experiences over achievements, setting goals that foster feelings like joy, and rejects the notion of focusing on just "one thing," encouraging experimentation and learning instead. Additionally, he highlights the responsibility of true leaders in understanding and supporting team members through their personal struggles. Key Takeaways: [05:32] Mitch shares about his program helping people dream big, think better, and take action. Despite initial hesitancy around the word "dream," the guest emphasizes its significance in the process. He highlights the importance of creating space for clients to dream, followed by thinking and doing. The focus is on experimentation and learning from experiences to help individuals discover their purpose. [8:51] He shares a story of someone who didn't achieve their dream outcome initially but found fulfillment by incorporating more of what they enjoyed. The example of Shawn Askinosie, a trial attorney turned chocolate maker, illustrates the importance of experimenting and taking small steps toward one's passions. Shawn's intentional exploration led to the launch of a successful small batch chocolate company, showcasing the power of experimentation and gradual steps in discovering one's true calling. [13:24] Mitch reflects on the contrast between the hustle culture's emphasis on constant activity and the idea of contentment. Challenging the notion that contentment is incompatible with ambition, he touches on the pursuit of consistent joy, which, unlike happiness, is rooted in core values and identity, transcending external circumstances. Mitch also emphasizes the importance of experiencing joy as a key aspect of personal fulfillment and success. [15:07] He discusses the concept of "reset week" and introduces a strategy called the GET Method to chart a course for the year. Mitch emphasizes starting with gratitude, as it induces a positive state change. Instead of focusing solely on achievements, the approach involves considering what experiences one wants to have in the coming year. He also notes that many goals are driven by the desire for specific experiences, such as joy and satisfaction. By prioritizing these experiences alongside goals, individuals can enjoy the journey without solely fixating on checking items off a to-do list. [18:21] Mitch reflects on the notion of waiting for the "one thing" and advises against this mindset. He shares his experience as a recovering perfectionist, highlighting that perfectionism is often misinterpreted as procrastination. Perfectionists may struggle with completing tasks until they find the perfect way, leading to delays. He also emphasizes the need to overcome perfectionism by acknowledging that there isn't just one perfect way, but rather multiple experiments and trials that can help individuals figure things out through momentum and learning along the way. [21:54] He expresses a positive view of therapy, emphasizing its benefits and likening it to a necessary cleansing process. Mitch advocates for seeking a good therapist, comparing the therapeutic journey to dating and highlighting its value even in different seasons of life. Therapy often looks back to address past hurts, while coaching primarily focuses on looking forward, helping clients identify and achieve their desired future. [25:33] Mitch stresses the importance of true leaders understanding their team members and assisting them in addressing personal challenges. He advocates for transparency and openness about seeking therapy or counseling, highlighting that discussing mental well-being is now more widely accepted and celebrated, especially among successful individuals. [27:24] He emphasizes that being an introvert doesn't mean disliking people or being bad with them. In fact, introverts can make excellent coaches, as they often redirect the spotlight onto others by asking questions and focusing on their needs. The key is to understand how you restore and recharge after a challenging day. [29:49] Mitch explains that he personally dedicates at least an hour each morning to spend time in nature, regardless of the weather. He highlights the importance of understanding how each person restores and recharges, emphasizing that not everyone needs to follow the same routine. For him, nature and spending time with his big dog play a crucial role in restoration. He advises individuals to identify how they restore and incorporate those activities into their daily lives. Additionally, he suggests introverts schedule appointments with their inner introvert on their calendars and create moments for solitude and self-care. [32:27] He encourages embracing a new tribe while keeping the old one if it contributes positively. Mitch shares his experience transitioning from a corporate career to entrepreneurship, that there is a need for like-minded connections. He advises to intentionally surround yourself with a few new individuals on a similar path. Mitch also mentions that he started his Dream, Think, Do Podcast in 2015. [35:54] Mich shares that he is celebrating 400 podcast episodes, sharing insights from both famous and everyday individuals facing challenges despite their achievements. He stresses that success doesn't eliminate life's complexities, mentioning Jillian Michaels as an example. Mitch also shares advice for leaders to engage in conversations that upgrade their tribe through dedicating just 15 minutes a day to intentional exploration, emphasizing the cumulative impact over a year. [42:38] Closing Quote: Remember, the purpose of life is a life of purpose. -Robert Byrne Quotable Quotes: "Dreaming doesn't come easy." "Leadership is developing the ability to lead one-on-one and to lead groups of individuals who are all in disagreement." "Dream first, think second, and then take action." "We can never predict exactly how things will unfold, so we highly value experimentation and learning along the way, recognizing that sometimes things unfold as planned." "Don't just quit." "Take small steps of faith over time, experiment, and discover things." "Seek consistent joy, as happiness can be transient and tied to circumstances. Identify the things that make you feel complete." "Joy is bigger than your circumstance." "Quit waiting for that one thing; start discovering things." "Things always change, so you need to look at everything to make the best decision." "I'm not perfect at it yet, but I'm improving every day." “To have great life experiences and achieve joy, peace, and satisfaction, you must also eliminate some of that junk.” “A true leader helps their people.” “One of the best ways to assess whether you're an introvert or an extrovert is on how you restore.” "Introvert people doesn't mean you don't like people." “Introvert people tend to ask questions as a defense mechanism to get the focus off of us.” “To have a new tribe doesn't mean you have to jettison the old tribe.” "When you start doing new things, surround yourself with people who are doing something similar." This week I'm chatting with Elise Daniels about building an engaged community. We discuss the importance of authenticity, vulnerability, and experimentation in building an engaged community. Here are the key takeaways from our conversation: Be Authentic and Vulnerable: When building a community, it's essential to share your heart and who you are. By being authentic and vulnerable, you create a magnetic message that attracts the right people to your community. Go Deep with Your Audience: By taking the time to get to know your audience, you can create a community that feels like a safe space where people can connect and grow. This is essential for creating an engaged community that is eager to buy from you. Experiment and Iterate: Success is not a straight line, and it often takes time, experimentation, and a willingness to pivot to find what truly works. By being open to feedback and willing to learn, you can create a community that is constantly growing and evolving. It Takes Time: Building an engaged community takes time. It's not something that happens overnight. It requires consistent effort, commitment, and a willingness to show up day after day, even when it feels hard. Elise Danielle is Dog-mum to two cheeky Labradoodles, book nerd, highly extroverted-introvert and online biz mentor + mindset coach who's totally obsessed with helping you scale to 10k months, turn your soul purpose into a business that creates profit bigger than your wildest dreams. How do you empower others to lead? Put simply, leadership growth happens when we're able to not just tell people or show people what to do, but actually move them into doing, with practical techniques that can be understood and easily applied. We call this moving from “Good to Know” to “Good to Do”. In this episode, President & Founder Steve Shenbaum shares the origin of the “Good to Do Podcast” and what to expect in this new way to approach leadership. The DO Lectures have a new podcast series entitled "DO Podcast with Gav Thompson". The first season is all about The Person behind The Story and The Story behind the Person and this is the second episode, entitled "Uncommon Conviction" with Johnnie Boden. Johnnie Boden is one of Britain's most successful entrepreneurs. He has built his fashion brand, Boden, to be one of the largest privately-owned clothing businesses in the UK. Boden is currently the 3rd biggest selling British fashion brand in the US. Johnnie talks with real honesty and authenticity to Gav about his uncommon conviction and how, as an untrained designer, he managed to believe in himself and his vision and build up his empire from very raw beginnings in 1991 selling menswear to his friends to becoming the huge womenswear and childrenswear empire that it is today. Johnnie talks about becoming the next Gok Wan and his uncanny similarities to his old schoolmate, Boris Johnson. Please listen, enjoy, review and subscribe. Show produced by George McDonagh. Music by James Morton.
The DO Lectures have a new podcast series entitled "DO Podcast with Gav Thompson". We have been releasing The DO Lectures in Podcast format recently, but we thought it was time to actually start making some podcasts that were, well, you know, actual podcasts. We have asked our old friend, Gav Thompson, to host these. Gav worked with David back in the 90's, has been a friend of the DO for ages and gave his own DO lecture in 2012. The first season is all about The Person behind The Story and The Story behind the Person and this is the very first episode, entitled "Self-Belief" with Tom Goodwin. Tom Goodwin is currently something of a marketing guru within the US, with over 750,000 followers on social media. He has recently pivoted from talking about the future of marketing to having some very outspoken views on Covid and the way the media reports on it. This has created a little bit of a stir, not least because some of his views are seen by a few as controversial (or contrarian...), which culminated in him getting very publicly fired a few weeks ago from a high profile job in New York. Gav explores the route of Tom's self-belief and tries to probe a little deeper behind both what happened and why Tom feels this way. Please listen, enjoy, review and subscribe. Show produced by George McDonagh. Music by James Morton.

This week we will be talking with Yitzy about Step 11. Yitzy, while having a shorter sobriety date than most of those I have spoken with, has some good insights into prayer and meditation and Step 11. I am grateful to him for taking the time out to record this episode in this series. If this is your first episode of this series (or of this podcast as a whole), I highly recommend that you go back and listen to all of the previous episodes of this Journey In Recovery series at some point. There are 12 Steps and they are in a prescribed order for a reason. So, whether you do that now, or after you listen to this episode, I heartily invite you to listen to the others and then continuing with the last few episodes over the next two weeks. Step 11 reads, “Sought trough prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.” In this and other conversations, you may be introduced to concepts that you have never before considered, or may even seem contradictory to what you have considered truth for perhaps your whole life, but these concepts are shared as honestly and openly as possible, using real experiences that cannot be denied as being true to these people sharing them. While you listen, take mental or physical notes of ideas of self-improvement that pop into your head. Then, at the end of this podcast, review those notes and make a plan about how you can implement them. Now, kick back, or hit the road, work out, do house or yard work, or whatever you do while listening to podcasts and be ready to learn and feel and gain insights like you may have never considered before. In this episode, there were, once again, some audio difficulties, but the message is strong and well worth the audio glitches here and there. Now for the housekeeping part of the program. This week we will be talking with Matt D about Step 11. It is pretty interesting to me that many of the new ideas and practices that I have learned about and that I am putting into place in my own life have to do primarily with Step 11. This is another powerful conversation with some really good insights into Conscious Contact with God. If this is your first episode of this series (or of this podcast as a whole), I highly recommend that you go back and listen to all of the previous episodes of this Journey In Recovery series at some point. Step 11. “Sought trough prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.” If you felt or were motivated to take some steps in your own life to make some changes, I invite you, as Matt did, to Enter a room, and start on the path. This week we will be talking with Nick, an alcoholic and addict with over 3 years sobriety, about his experience, strength and hope with Step 10. In this conversation we really focus on the importance of being constantly aware and taking minute-by-minute inventory of self and being accountable to self and others in recovery. He shares his “God shot” as he calls it, where God came into his heart and made him a changed man. This conversation is a very meaningful one and definitely heart-felt. If this is your first episode of this series (or of this podcast as a whole), I highly recommend that you go back and listen to all of the previous episodes of this Journey In Recovery series at some point. There are 12 Steps and they are in a prescribed order for a reason. So, whether you do that now, or after you listen to this episode, I heartily invite you to listen to the others and then continuing with steps 8 through 12 over the next several weeks. Step 10 reads, “Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it” In this and other conversations, you may be introduced to concepts that you have never before considered, or may even seem contradictory to what you have considered truth for perhaps your whole life, but these concepts are shared as honestly and openly as possible, using real experiences that cannot be denied as being true to these people sharing them. This is a second release of the original episode from the Know and Do Podcast from September of 2017. Cory Ellsworth is a fantastic and genuine man with a life story that rivals most. He is the father of a previous guest on the podcast, Cade Ellsworth. That episode was called "See the Person". It is also fantastic. In this conversation we went over the origins of his life and some of the things that have been most meaningful and impactful in his life. We also talked about tragedy that has struck his family in multiple ways over the years and how he and his amazing wife, Amy, have chosen to persevere rather than curl up and die in bitterness, sadness, and anger. Mary Sowards, and her husband, Rick, have been Godsends to my family since we moved to Spokane. They have always opened their hearts and home to us and made the best hot cocoa and cakes we could ever ask for. I can honestly say that I love Mary and Rick as my own family. And that is the dominant theme of this conversation – Family. In this episode of the Know and Do Podcast, we will hear as Mary shares her experiences of living all over the world as a military child and wife, her love of her grandmother and of her twin brother, her experiences as a single mother, fighting to raise good children and keep a roof over their head, and just some great words of wisdom about the importance of family, near and far. Open your heart and mind to any gentle promptings or blunt 2 x 4s upside the head. Then, be ready to act on those thoughts to become a bit better of a person yourself.
In this conversation we will hear as Ken shares how he sees, looking back, God’s hand directing and empowering his life and his family. He shares the difficulties of a pretty strict childhood, and also the lessons learned from it. He shares some lessons learned in life and death situations. He shares his indomitable desire and will to conquer any obstacle that is in front of him, including the long and scary slog of building a successful business. He shares his experiences in working to improve the conditions of hundreds of orphans in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010. And he shares how his wife and family have made him the man that he is today (and even though he probably wouldn’t say so himself, he’s a pretty darn good guy). Open your heart and mind to any gentle promptings or blunt 2 x 4s upside the head. Then, be ready to act on those thoughts to become a bit better of a person yourself. I want to share a bit about the Know and Do Podcast and what I am trying to do here. I have heard that one of the more powerful words in the English language is the word, “remember”. I think it might have something to do with the well-known phrase attributed to George Santayana which states: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” One of the goals of the Know and Do Podcast is to speak with people who have experienced life – both the ups and downs – and are willing to share some of that wisdom, earned and learned with those who are walking that path behind them. My hope is that something from each of these conversations touches the hearts of each listener and motivates them to do just one small thing a little bit better. This change of heart has the potential to help each person become a bit better, and then when the individual becomes a better person, their family benefits. When the family becomes a bit better, the community benefits. When the community becomes a bit better, the region benefits, and you get the picture, on and on, until the world becomes a bit of a better place. This is one reason I feel that it is important to strive to develop wisdom by talking to real people with real experiences, both positive and painful. This is what the Know and Do podcast is all about. I have several more of these conversations lined up, but am always looking for more people with life lessons and wisdom, learned and earned, that are willing to share with me and the listening audience of Know and Do. My ideal interview would be with someone who is nearer the end of his or her life than the beginning and has a story to tell and is willing to share the good and the not-so-good so that others can learn from their experiences. These conversations are also hoped to be a kind of legacy, where the person involved can impart some of their more important thoughts and philosophies and lessons learned, along with some experience that many have not yet heard, to their children, grandchildren, and on down the line for generations to come. If you know of anyone that fits this description, and who would be willing to have a recorded conversation with me, please email me at knowanddopodcast@gmail.com and let me know. We can then start the process of getting it set up. Also, if you find the Know and Do Podcast to be of value to you, please share it with your friends and family – please subscribe to it on iTunes, Stitcher, or wherever you listen to your podcasts – and please rate and review us on that same service. Now on to the conversation with Ken Potter. https://www.facebook.com/KnowANDDo/
This is the story of a remarkable, but ordinary 85 year-old man. A man who has walked an illogical, but God-led path in his life. We will follow him from his childhood in the Great Depression, through his youth during World War II, into college, work, marriage, unpredictable career changes, miracles, messengers, and messages. Dick Erb is a fascinating "guy next door" who has lived and learned in many places and many circumstances. His list of prominent people that he has known and worked with is impressive. His life invites one to reflect on one's own life and see where one can improve or can trust that the path that God lays ahead is the one that is best for him or her. The invitation to "Open Your Eyes" is one that can and will have a powerful effect on those who are willing and ready to put their own knowledge and wisdom and experience into action. This is the first of a new basic direction for the Know and Do Podcast. A direction in which we will be having conversations with normal people who are doing extraordinary things from the lessons of life that they have learned and are putting into practice.
