+ Holy Gospel according to St. John 16: 16 – 20Jesus said to his disciples,"A little while and you will no longer see me, and again a little while later and you will see me."So some of his disciples said to one another, "What does this mean that he is saying to us, 'A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" So they said, "What is this 'little while' (of which he speaks)? We do not know what he means."Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, "Are you discussing with one another what I said, 'A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me'? Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy.The Gospel of the LordGlimpses of the GospelCommentary on John 16: 16 – 20

Is it possible to know that your sins are forgiven and to have the assurance of eternal life? Many believe this is impossible but the Apostle John asserts that it is! In fact he wrote his gospel narrative so that people would come to believe that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah, the Son of God and have eternal life. "Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name." John 20:30-31We can not have assurance of eternal life unless we first have received this gift through faith in Jesus. John relates how Jesus defines eternal life and how people enter into it by grace through faith in him. John 3:13-18"No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven —the Son of Man.14 “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. 16 For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Anyone who believes in him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. (Christian Standard Bible) Later John in his first letter writes so believers can know they have eternal life. He defines eternal life in these words, "this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life....20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life." 1 John 5:11-12, 20Jesus himself defined eternal life, And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. In this Bible study lesson we focus on Exod. 21:3-21. Once again we come to the issue of slavery in the Bible. As I mentioned we studied this in depth in lesson 49 parts 1 and 2. I promised I'd give you the links to these two critically important podcasts. Here they are … Lesson 49 part 1 – https://lightofmenorah.podbean.com/e/exodus-49-part-1-exod-211-2-god-against-slavery-kidnapping/ Lesson 49 part 2 - https://lightofmenorah.podbean.com/e/exodus-49-part-2-exod-211-2-love-your-non-hebrew-slave-as-yourself/ I also mentioned a couple of awesome videos for you to consider that relate to slavery. The first – 5 minute long - is done by Candice Owen, the famous conservative commentator. The second by Dennis Prager. His – only 5 minutes as well - is on the 8th commandment, “Do Not Steal.” Once you get into the video you will see how dramatically this commandment is related to slavery. Candice Own video – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NO_wmixXBdE Dennis Prager video on commandment 8 - https://www.prageru.com/video/do-not-steal Once again in this lesson I give two examples of why Bible study is critical for any true disciple of our Lord Jesus. Do you do Bible reading? Are you reading through the Bible in a year? Are you following the schedule using the One Year Bible? Great! Don't stop. It is an act of “continuing in His word” as Jesus said and if we do this something happens. Just look … "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." (Joh 8:31-32) But, if you just read the Bible we are in danger of missing the truth that the Lord is trying to teach us. He spoke in Hebrew and to an audience 2000 years ago. We need to get at what they understood and heard so as to recapture the original meaning of the very words of God. Christians prior to the Civil War read the Bible in English. They did not read it in Hebrew nor did they study it in its historical context. They made a terrible translation error in that they said black people were less that human. If this is true, then the Bible and God's laws do not pertain to them. As a result they kidnapped black people from Africa and sold them as slaves. This was directly opposed to God's word. They did not study the word in Hebrew or in its cultural context. If they did they'd understand that what they did was beyond terrible. The problem is. Few today are trained in seminaries in Biblical Hebrew or how to take the Greek and take it back to the Hebrew or are trained in understanding the Bible in its historical context. As we will see in lesson 50 you are not going to get understanding of the very words of God unless you study along with reading. We need both and we need both to escape, perhaps, the mistranslations and incorrect application of the very words of God in our day. There is an excellent article at a good academic and scholarly site for Christians entitled, GOTQUESTIONS.ORG. It explains the concept of us being Bond Slaves of Jesus. What I like about this article is this Christian scholarly website shows to understand a bond slave we need to understand and study the Hebrew of Exodus 21. Here's the link to the article that will add to you understanding of the very words of God. Like many people, Wayne had other ideas of what he wanted his life or “stardom” to look like from young. He originally made plans to be the next up and coming rap-superstar-mogul from a small town in Georgia known as Millen, [GA]. But after posting his first skit on Facebook in 2014, those plans quickly teetered into a completely new direction after he became a viral sensation that everyone on the internet grew to love. In this Episode, Matthew makes reference to an incident where he misquotes Jonathan. The Audio from Jonathan that is being referenced is at 49m though 53m. I think what I did was during my research following the episode I mixed up the ape and the whale examples that Jonathan references and that mental mixup resulted in an innacurate representation. As stated in this episode, Jonathan was very gracious in his response to me on that. Doppelgängers | True Scary StoriesThe concept of doppelgänger is one that has fascinated people for centuries. It refers to a supernatural or paranormal phenomenon in which a person is said to have a double or a counterpart. This double is often perceived as a harbinger of bad luck or an omen of impending doom. It's believe that a doppleganger is an evil twin or an apparition of the person. The origin of the word doppelgänger can be traced back to Germany, where it was first used in the 18th century. The term is a combination of two German words: doppel, meaning "double," and gänger, meaning "goer," or "walker." The doppelgänger is often described as a ghostly or spectral figure that looks identical to the person it is mimicking. This can be a source of great confusion and anxiety for those who encounter it.Subscribe to our PATREONEMAIL us your storiesFollow us on YOUTUBEJoin us on INSTAGRAMJoin us on TWITTERJoin us on FACEBOOKVisit our WEBSITEThanks so much all for letting us share your stories!Research LinkStory OneStory TwoStory ThreeStory FourStory FiveThanks so much for listening and we'll catch up with you again next week for some more true, scary stories.Sarah and Tobie xx"Spacial Winds" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. No one was able to tie the man up anymore, not even with a chain. 4 He had often been put in chains and leg irons, but he broke the chains and smashed the leg irons. No one could control him. 5 Night and day he was in the graveyard or on the hills, yelling and cutting himself with stones.6 When the man saw Jesus in the distance, he ran up to him and knelt down. {Luke 8:28,“The man saw Jesus and screamed.”} 7 He shouted, “Jesus, Son of God in heaven, what do you want with me? Promise me in God's name that you won't torture me!” 8 The man said this because Jesus had already told the evil spirit to come out of him.9 Jesus asked, “What is your name?”The man answered, “My name is Lots, because I have ‘lots' of evil spirits.” 10 He then begged Jesus not to send them away.11 Over on the hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding. 12 So the evil spirits begged Jesus, “Send us into those pigs! Let us go into them.” 13 Jesus let them go, and they went out of the man and into the pigs. The whole herd of about 2,000 pigs rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.14 The men taking care of the pigs ran to the town and the farms to spread the news. Then the people came out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had once been full of demons. He was sitting there with his clothes on and in his right mind, and they were terrified.16 Everyone who had seen what had happened told about the man and the pigs. 17 Then the people started begging Jesus to leave their part of the country.18 When Jesus was getting into the boat, the man begged to go with him. 19 But Jesus would not let him. Instead, he said, “Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how good he has been to you.”20 The man went away into the region near the ten cities known as Decapolis[c] and began telling everyone how much Jesus had done for him. Everyone who heard what had happened was amazed. Today's Questions: What do you think of villains in stories? What do you think of Satan?
Good Friday The Collect: Almighty God, we pray you graciously to behold this your family, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed, and given into the hands of sinners, and to suffer death upon the cross; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Old Testament: Isaiah 52:13-53:12 13See, my servant shall prosper; he shall be exalted and lifted up, and shall be very high. 14Just as there were many who were astonished at him—so marred was his appearance, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of mortals— 15so he shall startle many nations; kings shall shut their mouths because of him; for that which had not been told them they shall see, and that which they had not heard they shall contemplate. 1Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3He was despised and rejected by others; a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity; and as one from whom others hide their faces he was despised, and we held him of no account. 4Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. 5But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed.6All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 8By a perversion of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people. 9They made his grave with the wicked and his tomb with the rich, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. 10Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him with pain. When you make his life an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days; through him the will of the Lord shall prosper. 11Out of his anguish he shall see light; he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge. The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. 12Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Psalm: Psalm 22 1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? * and are so far from my cry and from the words of my distress? 2 O my God, I cry in the daytime, but you do not answer; * by night as well, but I find no rest. 3 Yet you are the Holy One, * enthroned upon the praises of Israel. 4 Our forefathers put their trust in you; * they trusted, and you delivered them. 5 They cried out to you and were delivered; * they trusted in you and were not put to shame. 6 But as for me, I am a worm and no man, * scorned by all and despised by the people. 7 All who see me laugh me to scorn; * they curl their lips and wag their heads, saying, 8 “He trusted in the Lord; let him deliver him; * let him rescue him, if he delights in him.” 9 Yet you are he who took me out of the womb, * and kept me safe upon my mother's breast. 10 I have been entrusted to you ever since I was born; * you were my God when I was still in my mother's womb. 11 Be not far from me, for trouble is near, * and there is none to help. 12 Many young bulls encircle me; * strong bulls of Bashan surround me. 13 They open wide their jaws at me, * like a ravening and a roaring lion. 14 I am poured out like water; all my bones are out of joint; * my heart within my breast is melting wax. 15 My mouth is dried out like a pot-sherd; my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; * and you have laid me in the dust of the grave. 16 Packs of dogs close me in, and gangs of evildoers circle around me; * they pierce my hands and my feet; I can count all my bones. 17 They stare and gloat over me; * they divide my garments among them; they cast lots for my clothing. 18 Be not far away, O Lord; * you are my strength; hasten to help me. 19 Save me from the sword, * my life from the power of the dog. 20 Save me from the lion's mouth, * my wretched body from the horns of wild bulls. 21 I will declare your Name to my brethren; * in the midst of the congregation I will praise you. 22 Praise the Lord, you that fear him; * stand in awe of him, O offspring of Israel; all you of Jacob's line, give glory. 23 For he does not despise nor abhor the poor in their poverty; neither does he hide his face from them; * but when they cry to him he hears them. 24 My praise is of him in the great assembly; * I will perform my vows in the presence of those who worship him. 25 The poor shall eat and be satisfied, and those who seek the Lord shall praise him: * “May your heart live for ever!” 26 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, * and all the families of the nations shall bow before him. 27 For kingship belongs to the Lord; * he rules over the nations. 28 To him alone all who sleep in the earth bow down in worship; * all who go down to the dust fall before him. 29 My soul shall live for him; my descendants shall serve him; * they shall be known as the Lord's for ever. 30 They shall come and make known to a people yet unborn * the saving deeds that he has done. Epistle: Hebrews 10:16-25 or 4:14-16; 5:7-9 16“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds,” 17he also adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” 18Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. 19Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), 21and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, 25not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. or 14Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. 7In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.8Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered;9and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, Gospel: John 18:1-19:42 1After Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the Kidron valley to a place where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. 2Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with his disciples. 3So Judas brought a detachment of soldiers together with police from the chief priests and the Pharisees, and they came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4Then Jesus, knowing all that was to happen to him, came forward and asked them, “Whom are you looking for?” 5They answered, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus replied, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 6When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they stepped back and fell to the ground. 7Again he asked them, “Whom are you looking for?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 8Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So if you are looking for me, let these men go.”9This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken, “I did not lose a single one of those whom you gave me.” 10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his right ear. The slave's name was Malchus. 11Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back into its sheath. Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?” 12So the soldiers, their officer, and the Jewish police arrested Jesus and bound him. 13First they took him to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. 14Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was better to have one person die for the people. 15Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, 16but Peter was standing outside at the gate. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out, spoke to the woman who guarded the gate, and brought Peter in. 17The woman said to Peter, “You are not also one of this man's disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.”18Now the slaves and the police had made a charcoal fire because it was cold, and they were standing around it and warming themselves. Peter also was standing with them and warming himself. 19Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching. 20Jesus answered, “I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret. 21Why do you ask me? Ask those who heard what I said to them; they know what I said.” 22When he had said this, one of the police standing nearby struck Jesus on the face, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” 23Jesus answered, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong. But if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?” 24Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.25Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They asked him, “You are not also one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26One of the slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” 27Again Peter denied it, and at that moment the cock crowed. 28Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to Pilate's headquarters. It was early in the morning. They themselves did not enter the headquarters, so as to avoid ritual defilement and to be able to eat the Passover. 29So Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30They answered, “If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.” 31Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.” The Jews replied, “We are not permitted to put anyone to death.” 32(This was to fulfill what Jesus had said when he indicated the kind of death he was to die.)33Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” 34Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?” 35Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” 36Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” 37Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” 38Pilate asked him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I find no case against him. 39But you have a custom that I release someone for you at the Passover. Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 40They shouted in reply, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a bandit. 1Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2And the soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they dressed him in a purple robe. 3They kept coming up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and striking him on the face. 4Pilate went out again and said to them, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no case against him.” 5So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!” 6When the chief priests and the police saw him, they shouted, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him; I find no case against him.” 7The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has claimed to be the Son of God.”8Now when Pilate heard this, he was more afraid than ever. 9He entered his headquarters again and asked Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 10Pilate therefore said to him, “Do you refuse to speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and power to crucify you?” 11Jesus answered him, “You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.” 12From then on Pilate tried to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are no friend of the emperor. Everyone who claims to be a king sets himself against the emperor.” 13When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside and sat on the judge's bench at a place called The Stone Pavement, or in Hebrew Gabbatha. 14Now it was the day of Preparation for the Passover; and it was about noon. He said to the Jews, “Here is your King!” 15They cried out, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate asked them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but the emperor.” 16Then he handed him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus;17and carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called The Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha. 18There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, with Jesus between them. 19Pilate also had an inscription written and put on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20Many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. 21Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,' but, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.'” 22Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.” 23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier. They also took his tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. 24So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see who will get it.” This was to fulfill what the scripture says, “They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots.” 25And that is what the soldiers did. Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” 27Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home. 28After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfill the scripture), “I am thirsty.” 29A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. 30When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. 31Since it was the day of Preparation, the Jews did not want the bodies left on the cross during the sabbath, especially because that sabbath was a day of great solemnity. So they asked Pilate to have the legs of the crucified men broken and the bodies removed. 32Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out. 35(He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth.) 36These things occurred so that the scripture might be fulfilled, “None of his bones shall be broken.” 37And again another passage of scripture says, “They will look on the one whom they have pierced.” 38After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, though a secret one because of his fear of the Jews, asked Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission; so he came and removed his body. 39Nicodemus, who had at first come to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds. 40They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it with the spices in linen cloths, according to the burial custom of the Jews. 41Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucified, and in the garden there was a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. 42And so, because it was the Jewish day of Preparation, and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

Peter Denies Jesus 15Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest,16but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in.17The servant girl at the door said to Peter, You also are not one of this man's disciples, are you? He said, I am not.18Now the servants[e]and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves.Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself. Talking Points:In Mark 2:18-22 Jesus challenges the religious police of his day. Faith always expresses itself in certain activities (like fasting), but toxic religion uses this as a litmus test to police the spiritual life of others. Mark 2:18Jesus uses a wedding feast to illustrate that fasting doesn't make sense at a party. Religion treats spiritual practices like requirements on a checklist, but Jesus treats them as opportunities to express your heart toward God. Mark 2:19-20Jesus expands the principle with the example of putting new wine into old wineskins. Religion takes a rigid, legalistic approach to spiritual practices as an end in themselves, while in Christ these practices express the dynamic relationship we have with God by grace. Mark 2:21-22Discussion:What's your background regarding faith and religion?Make a list of spiritual practices that people are the “Religion Police” about.Read Mark 2:18-20. What do you believe about fasting? Is Jesus against it?What does it mean that Jesus is the groom and we are the bride?Read Mark 2:21-22. Explain the two illustrations that Jesus gave. What is their spiritual significance?Read Revelation 19:6-9. How does someone get invited to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb?See Also:Mormons drinking coffeeBreakthrough seriesJesus coming backShownotes:Opening / HookBig Idea: Religious systems want to authorize what religious practices (like fasting) are required, and how they are to be performed, believing that these practices prove who is worthy before God. This form of religion values doing the activities for their own sake. But Jesus reveals that since the Messiah has come, we can't do religious activity the old way anymore. Thus he is more concerned about heart attitude and purpose than mere conformity. Jesus still endorses religious practices (like fasting). But he shows that religious practices are not about measuring up, but express a growing relationship with God from our inner heart. The flow of the text:Jesus criticized. Mark 2:18His first response: there's a time to fast and not fast. Mark 2:19-20His second response: the approach of the Pharisees is not compatible with what the Messiah brings. Mark 2:21-22The Religion PoliceMark 2:18 Once when John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, some people came to Jesus and asked, “Why don't your disciples fast like John's disciples and the Pharisees do?”This question feels like a critique, not an honest inquiryIt's an accusation = Why don't you do what you're supposed to?Important note: this critique is not leveled against spiritual outsiders / heathens / unbelieversLast week: saw attitude of religion toward irreligious peopleToday: attitude of religion toward people who supposedly should know better → less zealous / righteous / serious followers of GodExplore fasting in the OTThe law of Moses does not command or regulate fasting for God's covenant peopleBut it was widely practiced as a customBy individuals and corporately as a nation Note: Torah commands humbling oneself on Day of AtonementThis was clearly understood in later Judaism to include fastingAlthough the Hebrews words for “fasting” are not...

- Palavra do Senhor. - Graças a Deus. (At 16,14b) — Proclamação do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo + segundo Marcos. — Glória a vós, Senhor. — Glória a vós, Senhor.
The Great Commission - Matthew 28:18-20Jesus, reminds us of his omnipotence, and commissions his disciples to go into the whole world and make disciples. They are to TEACH - Christian ministry is a teaching work, for we make disciples by teaching the doctrines of the faith, so that sinners will come under conviction of sin, repent and trust the Saviour. After that teaching ministry and related to it, comes Baptism (and Holy Communion) - the Christian call to ministry is a call to Word and Sacrament. The sacraments are visual aids of the gospel, illustrations of our Christ focussed cross c centred message.Jesus also tells us how baptism is to be done, with a Trinitarian formula, we baptise in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. In our current climate of woke hatred for the Bible and Christianity we will not fond it easy to obey the Great Commission, but we have a cast iron promise from Christ, that He IS with us - right until the end of the world. This address was recorded at Ballymacashon, so it contains extraneous sounds, echo, and a yapping dog at a neighbouring house!READ THE NOTES HERE. In this episode, Catherine wraps up this series on dealing with the difficult parts of the Bible by addressing those parts of Scripture we still don't understand. Let's be honest—sometimes Scripture does say what we want it to say. What is the point of these passages dealing with rape, slavery, and murder? Issues like these frequently come up when discussing the Christian faith with unbelievers and with our kids. They wonder how we can overlook such things. We shouldn't.We should wrestle with these sections of Scripture. We must not change them. We must not discard them. We must study and question and pray and wring our hands. Often when we do, we will find answers rendered more precious because of the journey it took to find them. Join Catherine in this divine search for answers to the tough questions in the Bible.EPISODES IN THIS SERIES:Episode 31: Why Does the Bible Say… Fill in the Blank? – https://bit.ly/3xX9XnVEpisode 32: How Can Parents Deal with the Difficult Parts of Scripture? - https://bit.ly/3NouE1P Episode 33: Is the God of the Old Testament a Monster? - https://bit.ly/3nmxtWFEpisode 34: How Can We Help Our Kids Understand Who God Is? - https://bit.ly/3yYZZUHRESOURCES MENTIONED:Article: “How Do I Deal with the Terribly Disturbing Parts of Scripture?” - https://bit.ly/3z8j5YRVideo: “Where Does the Evidence Lead? You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things. 2 And we know that God, in his justice, will punish anyone who does such things. 3 Since you judge others for doing these things, why do you think you can avoid God's judgment when you do the same things? 4 Don't you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can't you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?ROMANS 2:1-4PURITY IS EVERYTHING. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.MATTHEW 5:8 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.COLOSSIANS 3:518 Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. 19 Don't you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.1 CORINTHIANS 6:18-20Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, 2 but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. 3 As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd.4 “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?”6 They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. 7 They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” 8 Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.9 When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. 10 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn't even one of them condemn you?”11 “No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”JOHN 8:1-119 Don't you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don't fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, 10 or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. 1 CORINTHIANS 6:9-10 SEXUAL PURITY APPLIES TO EVERYONE AND ITS GOD'S HEART FOR EVERYONE.2 All a person's ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the LORD.PSALM 16:2“Where are your accusers? Didn't even one of them condemn you?”11 “No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”JOHN 8:1-1122 Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.2 TIMOTHY 2:22WE DON'T FIGHT SEXUAL SIN, WE RUN FROM ITWE DON'T ARRIVE AT PURITY, WE RUN IN IT.22 Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace.11 “I regret[c] that I have made Saul king, for he has turned back from following me…1 SAMUEL 15:11WE RUN IN PURITY WITH OTHERS.Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.2 TIMOTHY 2:22
Gospel of John, Chapter 8, verses 12-20Jesus remains in the Temple area teaching the people after freeing the woman caught in adultery. And Jesus reminds us that God is life...and that those who carry this life within us - Real Life! - will never walk in darkness, but rather are filled with the light of God. It's a classic choice put before us: which do we choose? Light or darkness? Later, Jesus reminds the people that He knows who He is, what He is about and where He is going. Would we be so blessed...
Matthew 28:16-20Jesus gives two steps for the making of disciples: Baptize them and teach them to obey. Andrew and Edwin talk about how surprising it is in the modern milieu that it isn't teach them to believe or teach them to accept. Instead, it is teach them to obey. That, of course, ties in with the previous conversation on Jesus's authority.Read the written devo that goes along with this episode by clicking here. This Psalm repeatedly references David's sickness- 38:3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 17. He is suffering intensely. He is suffering because of his sin- 38:3, 4, 5, 18. This is not to say all suffering is directly connected to our personal sin. The book of Job shows that is not true. However, we cannot say that there is no connection between personal sin and suffering either. David experiences it right here. His enemies add to his pain- 38:12, 16, 19, 20- while his friends stand far off- 38:11.Jesus experienced the suffering the author of Psalm 38 experienced:His friends forsook Him- Matt. 26:55-56, 58; Luke 23:49He was beaten so badly there was no healthy part of His flesh- Isaiah 52:14; 53:5; Matt. 27:26-31.He enemies laid traps for Him- Mark 3:6; Luke 11:54; 20:20Jesus was like a deaf man- Matt. 27:13 and a mute man- Matt. 27:13-14Jesus was not like the Psalmist in the sense that He never sinned- Hebrews 4:14-16; I Peter 2:22.Jesus is able to carry away the burden of our sins described in Psalm 38:4- Matt. 11:28-30. Jesus can save and forgive.

Listen and be changed.Recorded Nov. 21st, 2021Matthew 4:18-22 - NIV18As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20At once they left their nets and followed him.21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.Matthew 8:18-22 - NIV18When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”20Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”21Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”22But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”--Join us for service live every Sunday at 10am at 2244 95th St, Naperville, IL 60564Connect with us at our website www.revivechicago.church
Today we're joined by the Rev. Dixon Kinser, Rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem, N.C. As we wrap up Joshua, we talk about real estate contracts, ancient trash talk, faithful outsiders, and how Jesus changes our relationship with the enemy. Questions for reflection this week: - What does it mean to be faithful in hard times? - How does Jesus reshape our understanding of power and control?
