(image source: https://images.dinosaurpictures.org/Ceratosaurus3_1b79.jpg) Host Matthew Donald and guest co-host Allen Brooks discuss Ceratosaurus, an almost-famous dinosaur that often gets overshadowed by Allosaurus, which gets overshadowed by Saurophaganax, which just recently got overshadowed again by Allosaurus because the latter is now unfortunately dubious. At least Ceratosaurus itself overshadows poor Torvosaurus. When's the last time you heard that name? From the Late Jurassic, this 20-foot theropod had a distinctive horn on its nose, which is kinda cool, although I also have a horn on my nose every day at band practice, so it's not that cool really. I might be playing my horn wrong. Want to further support the show? Sign up to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content at Patreon.com/MatthewDonald. (image source: https://images.dinosaurpictures.org/Saurophaganax-Paul-Heaston1_2121.jpg) Host Matthew Donald and guest co-host Stephen Curro discuss Allosaurus anax, the new lord of the lizard eaters after supplanting the great and now dubious Saurophaganax after a hard-fought duel. There is truly no mercy sometimes in the battlefield of science. From the Late Jurassic, this 38-foot theropod was still basically everything we assumed Saurophaganax to be and therefore just as cool in a practical sense, it just now lacks the kickass name and the individuality of its own genus, which ruins everything. Damn you, A. anax! This is officially my Pluto. Want to further support the show? Sign up to our Patreon for exclusive bonus content at Patreon.com/MatthewDonald. In this episode, we dive into the fascinating story of Saurophaganax, one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs of the Late Jurassic. Often overshadowed by its close relative Allosaurus, Saurophaganax has sparked debates among paleontologists—was it a distinct genus or just a massive species of Allosaurus, sometimes called Allosaurus anax? Join us as we discuss its role as an apex predator, and uncover the mysteries behind its name and identity. Although they started as friends, they soon turned bitter enemies, competing against one another for 20 years to find and name the most fossils. This duel, often dubbed the “bone wars” led to espionage, sabotage, scandal, backstabbing, name calling, bribery, theft, and the throwing of literal rocks. It also led to a lot of mistakes made in haste. But, at the end of the day, it led to the discovery of 130 dinosaur species including Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Allosaurus, Apatosaurus (AKA Brontosaurus… I'll explain in the episode!), and more.
The Y2K bug has attacked the Dinosaur Review for Kids podcast & gave us an ultimate double review. Both of these dinosaurs may have shared the same battle grounds, but one had leaf-shaped teeth for eating plants & one had blade-like teeth for shredding meat. Regardless of how much time separated the two genus, one thing's for sure, the clocks always changed at midnight. It's time to drop the asteroid on these terrible lizards. Happy New Year!!
LOOP 5.1: It's episode 5 and Dave and Tom are pronouncing dinosaur names all wrong. Does any actually pronounce it “Deinonychus”? Dave reveals why Netflix chose Morgan Freeman as narrator over himself, Tom talks about the complexity of producing CGI feathers and we address T. rex controversies. Finally, we're served up a confusing ‘dinosaur sandwich' metaphor. Life On Our Planet (LOOP) is a new 8-part series created for Netflix by Silverback Films and Amblin Television. This Steven Spielberg produced series, narrated by Morgan Freeman, is hugely ambitious in its scope, telling the story of life throughout the whole Phanerozoic Eon. Ancient organisms and environments are painstakingly recreated by the supremely talented Industrial Light and Magic, whilst modern natural history scenes add vital context to the story. This show has been worked on for six years, during which time countless papers were read and around 150 different palaeontologists contributed their time and knowledge. The whole production had culture of letting the scientific rese arch dictate scenes, resulting in one of the most accurate on-screen representations of prehistoric life there has ever been. And how do we know all this? Well, our very own team members Tom Fletcher and Dave Marshall have been embedded within the LOOP team since day one! We are therefore in a totally unique position to reveal to you the work that went into this series, from both the production and research side of things. In this unofficial series, we've been granted exclusive access to many of the people responsible for creating LOOP, we explore what it takes to create a palaeontological documentary and we delve deeper into the science with some of the show's academic advisors. Each day, we will be releasing batches of interviews, each relating to a specific episode of LOOP. Image courtesy and copyright of Netflix.
It is the mega questions episode! Byrd and Matt talk about Ray Harryhausen's classic dinosaur Western, the Valley of Gwangi! It tells the story of some showmen and a scientist who go on an expedition into a valley in Mexico to find a prehistoric miniature horse. What they also find is a flesh craving Allosaurus. They bring it back to put it on display for the public and well... things don't go so well. We'll discuss the history of the film, dating back to Willis O'Brien's failed attempts to get it made in the 1940s, the differences between O'Brien's version and Harryhausen's completed film, the lasting influence of Gwangi, the stop motion effects, and whether or not we think it holds up. Relax and join the conversation!

This week a ‘what I did on my holidays' from Dave, though it wasn't a holiday and he dug a hole in Utah and looked at a ton of museums and quarries. The Morrison Formation is a legendary slice of dinosaur history with a huge number of famous sites, important fossils, and features animals like Diplodocus, Allosaurus and Stegosaurus. After far too many years, Dave finally made it out to some of the best known and most important sites and in this episode reports back to Iszi on what he saw and learned and talks about digging a large hole with no dinosaurs in it while looking for a brachiosaur. It's all very palaeontological, but that seems to suit our audience so here we are. Dave's new books: https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=dave+Hone+Smith+Wayland+dinosaur+book&crid=9EJAFZAAPNJV&sprefix=dave+hone+smith+wayland+dinosaur+book%2Caps%2C86&ref=nb_sb_noss Dave's not got his act together yet for photos of the trip but here's some classic Morrison sauropods from the Morrison: https://archosaurmusings.wordpress.com/2011/11/11/a-pair-of-giants/ Please do support us on Patreon and unlock extra content: https://www.patreon.com/terriblelizards
The US Fish and Wildlife Service are plunged into a deadly pursuit of an apex predator – and not everyone will survive.
From the quiet roads of New Hampshire, where snapping turtles are more common than lizards, to the depths of our evolutionary past, we'll grapple with the idea that we may still carry a piece of our reptilian ancestors within us. But don't be too quick to believe popular pop-psychology. We'll explore what the Triune Brain model tells us about our so-called "reptilian brain" and how it shapes our instinctual responses. We'll question if there's a lurking Allosaurus within our minds or if it's just an oversimplification of a complex organ. Evolution Talk is also a book! (image source: https://images.dinosaurpictures.org/saurophaganax_maximus_by_atrox1-d4ff5qy_b2a7.jpg) Host Matthew Donald and guest co-host Stephen Curro discuss Saurophaganax, the biggest and baddest Jurassic predator that truly makes Allosaurus the “other lizard” that it's so named. And by that, we means it makes Allosaurus its bitch. From the Late Jurassic, this 42-foot-long theropod might actually have been a giant Allosaurus species rather than its own, although the consensus is still contested to this day. And yet y'all are so confident about Dracorex and Stygimoloch not being valid… sorry, I really need to shut up about that. Want to further support the show? Hi, friends! Thanks so much for joining me on this podcast! I feel like each time I do a podcast now, I'm apologizing for not being consistent in the recordings. I was doing so well before COVID, and even early on during the pandemic. Then what happened? Well, virtual school happened, my work life was thrown upside down on its head, and I started experiencing extreme anxiety. I've battled with anxiety for nearly all of my life, but everything really just imploded. I had to take a step back to focus on getting healthy, being there for my family, and keeping my business afloat. It was a lot, but I feel like we're on the other side and I've been able to start getting back into the swing of things…and have even added a few more projects to my plate. Not sure my mother agrees with this, but these projects are ones that feed my soul, and give me energy…so that's good, right? So, I wanted to take some time to do a reintroduction and an update on what has actually been going on. There are so many exciting things happening, and I really do feel like there has been a shift in mindset. I live in Kentucky with my amazing husband Cameron, and the beat of my heart, my son, Alex. He's NINE years old now and in the third grade. That sounds so unreal. I'm not sure where all the time is going! Several months ago, My Autism Tribe hosted an event at one of our local hotels in the community. It was just a fun event, but while having fun, we also educated our community about the autism spectrum, and Alex even took the microphone, introduced himself, and we shared some back-and-forth Q&A. I had absolutely no expectations on how the evening would go, but there were so many great questions asked, relationships that were developed, and Alex was amazing! So that kinda kicked off our reintroduction with the nonprofit. Then, another amazing thing happened! We were connected with a local sheriff's department wanting to provide autism training to their officers. So, after a few meetings and several months later, My Autism Tribe partnered with them to create a video series that can be uploaded into their system so that officers can watch them in their spare time. Why is this important? Well, you can't take all the officers off the road at the same time to conduct in-person training, so with the videos, all of them can still participate in the training…which is absolutely critical in the education and awareness of how first responders need to provide service in emergency situations with those on the spectrum. And because of this partnership, we have also now been contacted with other surrounding counties to provide the same. And if any of you listening know of someone that would like more information on how we created the video segments, reach out and let us know! On a slightly different path, but with the passion coming from the same place and the inspiration being my son, I've also been working on creating a children's book series. It all started about four years ago, when I wrote a couple of stories for my son to help explain differences and challenges he was experiencing. I was told by several people that I should write more, so I did. Well, this eventually led to the creation of this series called DinoSprout, and is published by Rainbow Sparrow Books. Through the DinoSprout book series, the overall mission is to provide children, parents AND teachers/therapists with resources that cultivate healthy conversations. I really wanted a way to provide children with a mirror and a window into the special needs world. A mirror would provide children with special needs to see and learn about themselves, and a window would provide children without certain special needs to learn about others. And it's an A-Z collection of dinosaurs! So you have the first two books, “Stella, the Sweet and Spunky Stegosaurus”, and Toby, the Terrific and Talented T-Rex”. Stella is nonverbal, Toby has sensory processing challenges, and other dinosaurs in the A-Z are also woven through each story. Drew the Dyrosaurus has ADHD, Brody the Brachiosaurus has a brace on his leg, Alex the Allosaurus has anxiety, Hadley the Hadrosaurus has food allergies. You get the idea. I researched illustrators for over a year, and then my husband finally said, “Why don't you illustrate them yourself??” I do paint, but my paintings look nothing like a children's illustration, but I thought I would give it a whirl. I wanted the books to be fun, simple, with drawings that children could easily connect with. Think of Pete the Cat. My son loved those books, and illustrations. So, over a year later we have released the first two books on Amazon, AND I've even partnered up with a Ph.D. professor Sarah Hawkins-Lear to create educational activities and curriculum that teachers can incorporate into the educational environments. It's something that I'm not only extremely proud of, but am also so passionate about. We need to start these conversations at a young age! I've visited several classrooms, and it's amazing to see the children have these AHA! Moments. Hearing things like “I know someone that has to use headphones”, “My sister can't say words”, “Sometimes I don't know how to make friends”. I've literally left classrooms and have cried. These children are yearning for connections, and they really do want to be inclusive! It's the crazy world around us, and sadly some of the home environments, that turn this behavior in other directions. So, we need to reach them young, and reach them when they are hungry for positive relationships! The books are for ages 3-8ish, so if you or anyone else would like more information, check ‘em out! Stella and Toby are both on Amazon, or you can go to RainbowSparrowBooks.com for more information as well. I'm planning on having Sarah, the professor that I'm working with, on a podcast as well so she can share how they are being integrated. She's a wealth of information, and such an amazing human being. I'll provide some links in the show notes. Thank you so much for allowing me to join you today. Reach out to me on social media, send me a note, ask a question. I really do want to be with you on your journey, and I would love to have you as part of my tribe. We all need one. Love each and every one of you. Be well, and I'll speak with you soon! www.RainbowSparrowBooks.com Books Currently on Amazon: Stella, the Sweet and Spunky Stegosaurus: https://www.amazon.com/Stella-Spunky-Stegosaurus-DinoSprout-Educational/dp/B0BJCCQ78Y/ref=sr_1_1?crid=23FD15EC1YLCO&keywords=stella+the+sweet+%26+spunky+stegosaurus&qid=1671226104&sprefix=%2Caps%2C83&sr=8-1 Toby, the Terrific and Talented T-Rex: https://www.amazon.com/Terrific-Talented-T-Rex-DinoSprout-Educational/dp/B0BJY55BTX/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1ACEXIPO6KABD&keywords=toby%2C+the+terrific+and+talented+t-rex&qid=1671226113&sprefix=%2Caps%2C190&sr=8-1

Oh boy oh boy! Hey, friends! It's me—Count Vacula, starting off a brand-new season of No Filter with Count Vacula just for you!My first guest is named Riley Black, and she has maybe the most fun job in the world. She's a paleontologist, which means she studies dinosaurs! And Riley doesn't just study them—she's an explorer who hunts for fossils and dinosaur bones in the desert. Riley loves to learn all about the way the world was millions of years ago, and she also loves to teach other people about it, so she writes articles and books, and she even helped make the movie Jurassic World!Riley and I have a lot in common, like, we both love dinosaurs (although her neighborhood doesn't have a Princess dinosaur like mine does), and we both love to taste rocks! Riley does it to help her know what kind of rock it is, and I do it just because I think they're delicious. (But you should be careful to not lick any rocks unless you ask your grown-ups first.)Riley talked to me about her favorite dinosaur (Allosaurus!), and about how she loves to be kind to her dog, and she also told me a terrific made-up story about why werewolves love fireworks. I really liked meeting Riley, and I think you'll like meeting her too! I'll be back soon with more new friends for you to meet, and I hope you've been making some fun new friends of your own! You can write in and tell me all about it, or just let me know, how were you kind today?See you soon!Your pal,Vac

There's something strange about the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry. The fossils found there date back to the Late Jurassic Period and one species accounts for roughly two-thirds of all the bones: Allosaurus fragilis. But what killed all these big predators? Was the site itself a deadly trap, like the La Brea Tar Pits? Or was it a poisoned spring? Or was it simply a watering hole? This episode will dig into the mystery of this dinosaur graveyard.
