A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over
For rock climbers, skiers, and other outdoor enthusiasts, the word "send" has a whole new meaning. You might cheer on a fellow snowboarder with "Send it, bro!" -- and being "sendy" is a really great thing. Plus: a nostalgic trip to Willa Cather's' Nebraska home inspires a reading from one of her classic books about life on the American prairie. And what do they call a sudden, heavy rain where you live? A gulley washer? A frog-strangler? Or maybe even a bridge-lifter? All that, and the flowery language of seed catalogs, rank and file, cut me a husk, I am sat down vs. I am sitting down, Lead on, MacDuff! vs. Lay on, MacDuff!, a hematological puzzle, and a popular Spanish-language refrain about an extremely long goodbye. This week's episode brings you a conversation with Joel H. Morris. His debut novel, All Our Yesterdays, releases next week, and it's the origin story of the famous lady featured in Shakespeare's play Macbeth. Joel and I discussed his love of Shakespeare and how he became fascinated with one of the most studied female literary figures. Here's a description of Joel's novel: A propulsive and piercing debut, set ten years before the events of Shakespeare's historic play, about the ambition, power, and fate that define one of literature's most notorious figures: Lady Macbeth. Scotland, the 11th Century. Born in a noble household and granddaughter of a forgotten Scottish king, a young girl carries the guilt of her mother's death and the weight of an unknowable prophecy. When she is married, at fifteen, to the Mormaer of Moray, she experiences firsthand the violence of a sadistic husband and a kingdom constantly at war. To survive with her young son in a superstitious realm, she must rely on her own cunning and wit, especially when her husband's downfall inadvertently sets them free. Suspicious of the dark devices that may have led to his father's death, her son watches as his mother falls in love with the enigmatic thane Macbeth. Now a woman of stature, Lady Macbeth confronts a world of masculine power and secures the protection of her family. But the coronation of King Duncan and the political maneuvering of her cousin Macduff set her on a tragic course, one where her own success might mean embracing the very curse that haunts her and risking the child she loves. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Saturday morning, the 29th of July, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Gospel of John 13:7: “Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.” Maybe today you have woken up, and there is something in your life and you just don't understand it. “Lord, I love that person so much and have heard they have gone home to be with you. Why did You take them when they were still so young?” You just don't understand why it happened. Well, the preacher, J.R. MacDuff, told a beautiful story about the wonderful cedars of Lebanon. They are all over the Bible. You see accounts of these beautiful trees that sheltered animals from the storms, gave the shepherd rest in the heat of the day, and yet the timber man came with his big, sharp axe and cut those trees down. What a tragedy! Those huge logs were floated down to the old port of Joppa, then transported to Jerusalem, where they were formed into beautiful beams and put in the Temple of the Lord, and there they gave glory to God.We don't know and don't often understand why things happen or why you are going through such a rough time. Maybe the Lord is fashioning you and me, perfecting us for home time when we eventually go to the City of God in Heaven, where we will be with the Lord forever. I want to encourage you today not to ask too many questions and not to be afraid to say to someone, “I don't know the answer, but when I get to Heaven, God will tell me, and then I will understand fully, but until then, I will continue to serve Him, just like the old farmer, Job said, “Even though He slay me, yet will I still trust Him.” Job 13:15I want to tell you today that I have many unanswered questions, but I know one thing: on the great and wonderful day when I meet the Lord, face to face, He will answer every single question. In fact, I won't even have to ask Him any questions because the answers will be straightforward and waiting for us. So today, if you are going through a time of hardship and there is a fashioning taking place in your life - maybe you have lost a loved one and you are feeling lonely, and you are thinking, “Lord, why did you do that?” Well, I want to tell you that it was time for that loved one to meet the Master and to be part of His eternal plan, but in the meantime, He will give you the strength to take one day at a time, waiting for the wonderful day when we will be together forever in Paradise.Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day,Goodbye.
Join Annie and Jenny as they delve into the vast history of Huntly Castle. The now ruinous Aberdeenshire castle dates back to the 12th century when William the Lion entrusted the MacDuffs with controlling the rebellious area. The motte and bailey castle, then called the Peel Strathbogie, was in the MacDuff's hands for many tumultuous decades which included catastrophic crusades, brutal beheadings, and fatal flip-floppery. Eventually the Strathbogies blew it and were wiped from their castle by Robert the Bruce, who subsequently gave it to the Gordon family. The Gordons quickly set about changing the castle's questionable name to Huntly Castle and architecturally revitalising it into something never before seen in Scotland. Over the centuries the Gordons amassed huge amounts of power and influence, but power has funny ways of collapsing, especially when on the Catholic side of the Reformation. In the Gordon's case their Catholicism has strange and spooky consequences which, thanks to contemporary sources, have reverberated through history to the modern day. The Hamlet Podcast - a weekly exploration of Shakespeare's Macbeth. Act IV Scene i - Lennox appears, with news about Macduff. Written and presented by Conor Hanratty
In 1947, wanting to bring Macbeth to film, Welles teamed with producer Charles K. Feldman to convince Herbert Yates, President of Republic Pictures, to finance. Welles guaranteed to deliver Macbeth on a budget of seven-hundred thousand dollars. When some members of Republic's board expressed misgivings on the project, Welles agreed to personally pay any amount over the initial ask. He brought in Irish actor Dan O'Herlihy as Macduff, and cast former child star Roddy McDowall as Malcolm. To cast Lady Macbeth, Welles visited longtime friend and radio legend Jeanette Nolan. The two had known each other since the 1930s in New York. Nolan and her husband, fellow actor John McIntire, were excited to work with Orson. Welles made several changes to Shakespeare's original, like adding significance to the witches. They were played by two other Hollywood radio legends: Peggy Webber, and Lurene Tuttle. Welles expressed frustrations with wardrobes and the tight schedule. He had the cast pre-record all their dialogue. Locations were leftover sets from westerns normally made at Republic. The entire production was done in twenty-three days in July of 1947. In September, Welles signed on to star in Gregory Ratoff's Black Magic. Shooting would take place in Rome. He wouldn't return until 1948. Republic initially trumpeted the film as an important work, entering it in the 1948 Venice Film Festival. It was abruptly withdrawn after poor comparisons with Lawrence Olivier's version of Hamlet, also being screened. LIFE Magazine gave the film a terrible review in October of 1948, saying that Welles' days as the “boy wonder” were long over. When he returned from Europe in the Spring, Welles cut twenty minutes from the film at Republic's request and recorded narration to cover some gaps. But when finally released, it too was called a disaster. In July of 1948 Welles signed on to co-star with Tyrone Power in the Italian film, Prince of Foxes. The film would be released in December of 1949. Welles' last appearance in the 1940s on American radio was in a pre-recorded segment on Mail Call over the Armed Forces Radio Service, on October 13th, 1948. Now thirty-three years old, Orson Welles had enough of Hollywood. He was in deep debt and needed to move to Europe, full-time. His first main stop would be in Vienna, to star with Joseph Cotton in a new film called The Third Man.
