Podcast Overview: Will, Walker & Royce discussed the uniqueness of Dirtybird and its impact on the music industry, the unpredictability of track success and the impact of self-help. Who are Walker & Royce: Walker & Royce started when Sam and Gavin, having known each other in and out of the dance scene for years, finally began working together in 2011. Crosstown Rebels boss Damian Lazarus noticed one of their very first releases. The result was the Crosstown Rebels EP "You're Not Welcome" and with that, Walker & Royce was launched into the dance music spotlight. Around the same time, Walker & Royce released a track on OFF Recordings that went on to become a house anthem: "Connected". The song became a mainstay in Solomun's performances and with that set the stage for a diverse range of sounds from the pair. Their EP on Moda Black entitled “Sister” was picked by Pete Tong as his Essential New Tune, and their chart toping remix of Baunz' “Out the Window” on Pets Recordings garnered support from many of the biggest artists in electronic music. Most recently the duo has joined the ranks on Claude Vonstroke's seminal Dirtybird Records with the release of the “Boy” EP and “Hit Dem Draws” and Green Velvet's legendary Relief Records with their chart toping release “Peep This Cat”, and “3 4 Shake It” with fellow Dirtybird artist Will Clarke. Having solidified their unique sound, you will hear Walker & Royce's music in many of the top DJ's from around the world! From Sasha to Adam Beyer, Maceo Plex to Gorgon City and Eats Everything to Locodice, they continue to break down the genre barriers and turn heads....Join for updates: https://laylo.com/willclarke⏲ Follow Will Clarke ⏱https://djwillclarke.com/https://open.spotify.com/artist/1OmOdgwIzub8DYPxQYbbbi?si=hEx8GCJAR3mhhhWd_iSuewhttps://www.instagram.com/djwillclarkehttps://www.facebook.com/willclarkedjhttps://twitter.com/djwillclarkehttps://www.tiktok.com/@djwillclarke Hosted on Acast. Surpassing 30 million views over numerous platforms, the timeless classic was awarded the accolade of Essential New Tune by Pete Tong, & was the biggest selling track on Defected Records during 2012. Alessandro joined me live & direct from his beautiful pad in Milan (apologies if the audio isn't perfect), and there's no holds barred in this life story so far podcast. We talk about the realities behind the world of social media, his humble upbringing & his Irish and Italian roots, the importance of hard work, making mistakes, not fearing failure when it comes to progression, playing the long game & staying true to yourself, a positive mindset, the ups and downs of being a touring DJ and we then take it right up to the present day where he discusses the period of reflection and ability to reset since Covid hit. The timeless classic ‘Need In Me' of course gets an honorary mention, as well as the great work being implemented by the respective Defected & Toolroom teams not just on his releases, but for also using their platforms to improve equality with gender and race issues. Throughout his youth, Tomy DeClerque witnessed at first hand the development of Slovenia's electronic dance scene. As techno artists such as Umek and Valentino Kanzyani found global recognition and the country's club scene thrived, it presented the perfect opportunity for a young DeClerque to ride the wave. His first foray into the world of production came alongside his long- time friend Zox. Together they had early successes with "My Desire" and "Music Makes Me Happy". The latter being licensed to a number of compilations, was also selected by Pete Tong as the Essential New Tune on his BBC radio show. DeClerque was to take a break from the hectic DJ and producer lifestyle. On his return, it was time to head out solo. His early work for Circle Music, Sprout and Jesus Loved You, brought him much attention and, over the past two years, he has rapidly built a strong following with his work for labels including Intec Digital, BluFin, 1605, Terminal M, Toolroom, Cr2 and more... As a young player, Tomy DeClerque has accomplished a lot. But he is determined to accomplish even more. "You'll hear a lot about me in the future" he promises. Talent, passion, perseverance and an unerring work-ethic; to achieve even moderate success in the industry you need all of these qualities and more in abundance. So when Danny and Alessandro – now known under the ferociously successful Flashmob moniker – stepped away from their highly fruitful previous project to essentially start again from scratch, they were more than aware of the long, hard road ahead of them. In 2012 Flashmob is one of the most acclaimed, instantly recognisable production groups in house music. Riding a tidal wave of success generated by the ravenous response to singles ‘Brick House’, ‘Ninety Five’ and – most significantly – ‘Need In Me’, Flashmob have carved an indelible niche for themselves, crafting sublimely unpretentious house music, the widespread appeal of which has been near unprecedented. Not many people’s records get spun by both Kerri Chandler at Pandemonium and Pete Tong at Pacha in the same season; the fact that Flashmob can count themselves as producers in this group goes some way to showing the global underground appeal of the records they make. Flashmob began to take shape more than five years ago, after Danny and Alessandro began disillusioned with their current project and laid it to rest. Although highly respected in the techno and progressive house genres, they felt they had lost sight of why they started a career in music. “We were producing 40-50 records a year” recalls Alessandro “and the labels we were working with were just chucking them out.” Rightly concerned that the labels were concentrating on quantity over quality of their output, they stepped away from the industry to take stock and to consider their options. “We decided that whatever we did next it should be about taking it back to basics” explains Alessandro. And that’s exactly what they did. Educating themselves in the origins of house music they immersed themselves in the records and history of Chicago house Larry Levan, Studio 54, and came back with a rejuvenated passion that extended not only to the music they would produce but the way in which they would come to promote it. Their debut record as Flashmob was ‘Brick House’, a record that was eventually signed to pioneering Berlin imprint Get Physical. To kick start the release however, Danny and Alessandro went back to grass-roots promotion, quite literally, as they spend 10 hours on the parched scrubland and car parks outside Ibiza’s DC10, Pacha and Space ensuring that the DJs they wanted to have the record had a copy. A far cry from sending your latest release to a mailing list of hundreds, ‘Brick House’ proved that it only takes support from a few key tastemakers to make yourself heard, and for a while the enthusiastic hubbub created by ‘Brick House’ was simply irrepressible. If ‘Brick House’ suggested that Flashmob might be capable of greatness, then it was the follow-up of Ninety Five that proved it beyond all doubt. Signed by house heavyweight Defected Records and awarded the accolade of Essential New Tune by Pete Tong ‘Need In Me’ was undoubtedly one of the biggest tracks of the year in Ibiza it remains and biggest selling track on Defected of 2012. But despite all its subsequent triumphs it was a record that was close to never seeing the light of day. When Defected requested a record from them, Alessandro did something he had never done before and sent the record to the label without telling his productions partner Danny. “We weren’t sure that we wanted to release ‘Need In Me’” explains Alessandro “we just didn’t know if it was the right record for us”. This reluctance to do what do most people would have been an obvious decision highlights the humility and level-headedness with which Flashmob conduct themselves. Despite their records hitting hundreds of thousands of plays on YouTube and regularly being charted by A-list DJs from all backgrounds, Alessandro claims they are unaware of the level of success they’ve reached. “At the moment we’re just concentrating on the music and concentrating on delivering the best DJ set possible whenever we play” he admits. “Danny and I have been through thick and thin for five years to get to this point; now that we’re here we have to keep on pushing ourselves rather than sit back and think about our success.” November 2012 sees the release of their latest endeavour, ‘Hot’, a record which according to Alessandro is “the true evolution of ‘Brick House’. ‘Need In Me’ was a one-off record; ‘Hot’ picks up where we left off in 2011 and further develops the Flashmob sound.” Early support from DJ Sneak, MK and Tiefschwarz indicates that ‘Hot’ will follow a similar lofty path to that of its predecessors, but Danny and Alessandro are already planning their next move. “The next Flashmob record will be something that people aren’t expecting… that’s how you stay ahead of the game!” enthuses Danny. And with an album in the pipeline and a touring schedule rapidly on the rise, all the signs are there that Flashmob will continue their rapid ascension into 2013 and beyond.

In a land that has no ego and a table that has no head, Round Table Knights are constantly pushing their talents as DJs and Producers to the limits and evolving with the output. Hailing from Bern, Switzerland Round Table Knights were originally a four man scratch DJ collective with a penchant for hip-hop, rock, electro and jazz. “We fell in love with House Music because it’s a very wide and open kind of music, you can put whatever influences in there. If you do it with your own style and with taste it’s a very good thing" Following a stellar EP on Deadfish, 2010 saw their first EP for Made to Play get signed on the spot by Jesse Rose and go on to become one of the catchiest outputs to date, with support from everyone from Luciano to Annie Mac in her Glastonbury set. The resulting avalanche of productivity and popularity snowballed further with ‘Cut To The Top’ featuring the legendary Swiss garage-rock legend Reverend Beat-Man on vocals and combining elements of garage, blues and of course their irrefutable house beats. Never delivering an output that could be considered ’typical’ their kudos as remixers was also duly noted with projects on Gomma and Defected turning some serious heads and their remix of Tensnake’s Coma Cat going on to become Pete Tong’s Essential New Tune. Upcoming projects include a remix of Jesse Rose’s ‘Non-Stop’ on Made to Play and remixes for Modular and Loungin’ Recordings plus the release of their debut artist album ‘Say What?!’ on Made to Play in Feb 2011. “The album is like when you listen to a Round Table Knights DJ Mix, there are always some songs from different genres that you wouldn’t expect in an average House DJ Mix, we like these little surprising moments of finding out that something you would never expect fits together very well.” After a ten year journey, the Swiss Beardies have less ‘Cut To The Top’ than mixed, scratched and grafted their way up there and with a member who already gets mistaken as Claude VonStroke it seems the sky is the limit for the bearded masters of forward thinking, surprising house music.

We're back from Black Rock City, Boys and Girls, with hours upon hours of dark and dirty playa sets recorded live from DISTRIKT at Burning Man Rites of Passage! Today we're quite pleased to present you with the very first of those recordings from our good pal, Lee Coombs of Thrust Recordings. Enjoy! "It’s been two years since I have visited the Playa and I couldn’t wait to play my first DISTRIKT set. There is something really special about a huge daytime party in the desert! I re-edited and re-mixed like a mad man in the weeks leading up to Burning Man to make sure I had the right tunes for the job. DISTRIKT has the kind of vibe that I love, the crowd wants to hear Rolling Underground Beats that carry you through the day and then onto the night. They know quality and when they hear it, the place erupts. Hats off to you DISTRIKT. I had an Epic afternoon and loved every minute of it. Thank You!" - Lee Coombs x Track List 1. Bending boundaries and ignoring the status quo – where would the electronic music scene be today without Lee Coombs? For over a decade this British producer has been at the forefront of it all; releasing groundbreaking mix CDs, remixing the world’s most acclaimed artists and knocking out dancefloor destroying productions that are considered classics years after their release. A seasoned veteran, Coombs first hit the DJ slopes in 1989, bathing himself in the acid house scene at parties around London and Cambridge. Crucial in shaping his all-encompassing approach to DJing and production, this boundary-less approach would become Coombs’ trademark, mixing up breaks, house, electro, techno and acid with dexterous assurance. In 1998 Coombs made his first massive strike on the breaks scene as the prized recruit of then ‘up and coming’label Finger Lickin’, with the man’s acclaimed album of 2001 ‘Future Sound of Retro’ signalling his arrival on the world stage. The album struck a chord within the dance music community, so much so that respected industry figurehead Pete Tong noted him as the ‘man to watch’. An ‘Essential New Tune’ accolade soon followed courtesy of Tong, with Coombs’ re-rub of Quivver’s ‘One Last Time’ making dance fans weak at the knees the world over. Such was the demand for Coombs, that luminary Paul Oakenfold was soon knocking at his door, resulting in the critically acclaimed Perfecto Breaks album of 2002. After landing the job of remixing Oakenfold’s ‘Time of your Life’ and then further re-rubs for world class acts such as Moby, New Order, Lamb and Planet Funk, Coombs’ status as one of the industry’s most in-demand artists quickly developed. Even the BBC was under the Coombs spell with them flying him over to Prague in the summer of 2003 to record the theme music for the television program ‘Born to Win’ with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Ever the musical innovator, Lee Coombs’ 2004 album release ‘Breakfast of Champions’ signalled a significant evolution in his sound. Collaborating with some of the most respected artists in his field – from Dylan Rhymes to Christian J, Andy Gardner (Plump DJs) and Jem Panufnik (Soul of Man), the album charted the ambitious new territory of Tech Funk, injecting the Breaks sound with butt-shaking elements of House, Electro and Techno. It was a style Coombs would make his own, alongside fellow innovators Meat Katie, Elite Force and Dylan Rhymes. Featured on the acclaimed album was the cracking single ‘Shiver’ (feat. Katherine Ellis) which was snapped up by classic house imprint Azuli and became one of the biggest vocal house anthems of 2005, whilst the ‘Alright All-Night/Dubhead’ and ‘Obsessional Rhythm’ singles went straight to no.1 in the DJ Mag Beats & Breaks Chart. Departing Finger Lickin’ for new pastures in 2005, Coombs’ focus shifted to releasing music through his own Thrust Recordings imprint as well as Adrift and Meat Katie’s Lot49 (then Whole9Yards). It was at this time that he started his ‘Thrust’ club nights in San Francisco, with the quarterly events becoming one of the hottest tickets in the Bay Area. He also formally joined the Lot49 team, mixing the label’s compilation Lot49 Presents – Lee Coombs. When he is not in the producers chair, Coombs regularly tours all corners of the globe and is a bona-fide fan favourite throughout Europe, the USA, Australia, Asia and of course the UK. His popularity has also ensured his repeat appearance at infamous festival ‘The Burning Man’ in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. Coomb’s latest artist album entitled “Light and Dark.” Was released in October 2009 on Lot49, Coombs views this as his most ambitious project yet with a range of tempo from 100 – 128 bpm. While still dancefloor focused, collaborations with the likes of Seasunz, Katherine Ellis, Uberzone and others help push the albums boundaries and showcase Coombs’ abilities across multiple genres. 2010 saw Lee move back into the T.V. music world when Absolut Vodka asked for his services with their ‘AbsolutNight’ campaign. In 2011 they also asked Lee to write the music to their ‘Absolut Blank’ Campaign which includes ‘behind the scenes’ video soundtrack and an Electronic version of their currently worldwide showing ‘Absolut Blank’ T.V. ad. Lee’s ability to create music that fits any kind of film or game is becoming widely known throughout the industry. In a world that’s so often governed by trends and fads, Coombs’ unwavering ability to simultaneously destroy dancefloors and push musical boundaries over 20 years since he first touched a pair of turntables is a remarkable achievement in itself. There’s little doubt that his impressive sonic skills will be rocking ears for many years to come. For more information on Lee visit him at www.leecoombs.com or http://soundcloud.com/analogdelayed.
