In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with legendary session drummer Paul Leim, whose six-decade career quietly powers a staggering piece of the soundtrack to our lives. Paul has played on more than 12,000 songs across over 2,000 releases, with 1,400+ silver/gold/platinum certifications, and global sales topping 540 million units. His discography encompasses over 150 combined GRAMMY nominations and wins, as well as 40+ major film/TV awards, and credits on more than 150 films and 100 television specials and series. If you've heard Lionel Richie, Shania Twain, Lyle Lovett, Kenny Chesney, Whitney Houston—or cues from Dirty Dancing, Smokey and the Bandit II, The River, or even Return of the Jedi, you've likely heard Paul.We trace the arc from East Texas clubs and Dallas jingle mills to late-'70s Los Angeles, where a “typical” week meant two complete drum rigs leapfrogging between Lionel Richie sessions, network TV soundstages, film dates, and award shows. Paul talks mentors and “angels” (band director Neil Grant, Robin Hood Brians, Doc Severinsen), lifelong friendships with the TCB family (Ron Tutt, Jerry Scheff), and lessons that still anchor his playing—especially dynamic control and “letting the mics work.” We get inside the high-wire reality of studio life. Paul calls it “95% boredom and 5% sheer terror”, including how to read conductors, when to lead the time, and when to ride it, and what it's like to move from live kit to orchestral percussion with John Williams. There are great shop-floor stories: cutting Lionel's “Truly” and counseling Lionel at the fork-in-the-road moment of leaving the Commodores; discovering that Lyle Lovett's “The Blues Walk” was gloriously vocal-free; and a deep dive into the precision world of Mutt Lange and Shania, ending bass notes just before the snare for mix “air,” the chrome-over-brass “important” snare, and the on-the-fly invention of tom “Mutt flaps” for short, open fills. Paul also shares a personal fork he chose differently: turning down a James Taylor tour to be home with his young family, only to hand JT the final serial-numbered Leim signature snare decades later at the White House.Today, Paul is still very much in motion: bandleading the TCB Band in Europe, steering The Tennessee Four with Thomas Gabriel to carry the Cash legacy, and jumping into Million Dollar Quartet shows—proof that the hang, the humility, and the groove endure. It's a conversation about craft, friendship, stewardship of a gift, and the choices that shape both a career and a life.Music from the Episode:Pick it Apart (Mark O'Connor)Truly (Lionel Richie)The Blues Walk (Lyle Lovett)Thank you for listening. Wall Street ended the quarter on a high as both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq reached record levels. Putting the bow on their best quarter in over a year, buoyed by possible trade deals and rate cuts. S&P 500 up 0.52%, Nasdaq up 0.47%. Dow was choppy in the early stages of the session, falling and rising intermittently, but found strength to finish near the high. Up 276 points. Most sectors up, Energy and Cyclicals the exception. The former is deflating from the recent, sharp drop in oil while the latter was weighed down by Tesla and Amazon, the two largest companies, falling 1.8% each. REITS was the best performing sector, falling yields and expectations of rate cuts benefitting the sector. Financials gained, additionally boosted by their victory in the Fed's annual health check which prepared the stage for stock buybacks and dividends.Resources mixed. Oil mixed as Brent and WTI diverged. Weakening dollar offered some support but there were little major gains. Nickel, zinc, iron ore all fell.ASX to open flat. Wall Street rose for the second consecutive session as a ceasefire between Israel-Iran was declared by Trump and seemingly accepted by both parties - markets ran bullish with the narrative. Elsewhere, Jerome Powell appeared before the House Financial Services Committee and insisted he was not in a rush to cut interest rates as the effects from tariffs were yet to fully appear in the data, his stance contrasting against recent comments from other Fed officials which raised the possibility of a July cut. S&P 500 up 1.11%, Nasdaq up 1.43%. Dow rose steadily throughout the day, ending near the high. Up 507 points. Most sectors positive, Energy the exception, followed oil down, second consecutive day as worst performer. Tech was the best performer, chip stocks rose as risk-on sentiment was reignited, Nvidia (+2.6%) and Broadcom (+3.9%) up. Financials also did well with the Fed's annual health and stress checks looming - the major banks are expected to easily clear these. Healthcare also jumped above 1%. Defensives like Staples and Utilities recorded positive gains but were the laggards of the S&P 500 as a risk-on sentiment reigned.ASX to rise. SPI futures up 5 points (+0.06%). Podcast Overview: Moby & Will discuss his 30 years in the industry, where young creatives go nowadays, not focussing on selling out DJ tours & his journey with his mental health. Who is Moby: Richard Melville Hall, 11 September 1965, New York, USA. A New York DJ, recording artist, Christian, vegan and Philosophy graduate. Moby is so nicknamed because of the fact that he can trace his ancestry to the author of the famous whaling tale. This is by no means the only interesting aspect of his idiosyncratic artistic life. He refuses to travel anywhere by car because of the environmental considerations, and generally displays little of the public anonymity that is the creed of the underground DJ. In 1991, he took the Twin Peaks theme, under the guise of "Go", into the UK Top 10. Although that appealed to the more perverse natures of both mainstream and club audiences, the release of "I Feel It"/"Thousand" in 1993 was yet more bizarre. The latter track was classified by The Guinness Book Of Records as the fastest single ever, climaxing at 1,015 bpm. It was typical of Moby's playful, irreverent attitude to his work. In his youth he was a member of hardcore punk outfit the Vatican Commandos, and even substituted as singer for Flipper while their vocalist was in prison. He has brought these rock 'n' roll inclinations to bear on the world of dance music: at the 1992 DMC/Mixmag Awards ceremony he trashed his keyboards at the end of his set. His introduction to dance music began in the mid-80s: "I was drawn to it, I started reading about it, started hanging out in clubs. For me house music was the synthesis of the punk era." He collected cheap, second hand recording equipment, basing himself in an old factory/converted prison in New York's Little Italy district. The albums issued by New York dance label Instinct collect the artist's early work. Ambient comprised unissued cuts from 1988-91, composed of barely audible atmospheric interludes. Moby signed to leading independent Mute Records in 1993, and the following year released "Hymn", a transcendental religious techno odyssey, distinguished by a 35-minute ambient mix and a Laurent Garner remix. The track was included on his eclectic major label debut, Everything Is Wrong. His own remix catalogue includes Brian Eno, LFO ("Tan Ta Ra"), Pet Shop Boys, Erasure ("Chorus"), Orbital ("Speed Freak"), Depeche Mode and even Michael Jackson. He moved away from his dance base in 1996 with the thrash rock of Animal Rights, and in turn sounded more like Johnny Rotten. His "James Bond Theme' debuted at UK number 8 in November 1997. The attendant I Like To Score was an uneasy experiment in soundtrack work. Another change of style was apparent on 1999"s Play, a superb album on which several tracks were based around sampled field recordings made by folklorist Alan Lomax in the earlier part of the century. Play became a remarkable sleeper hit, thanks in the main to the licensing of every track on the album for use in advertisements. Moby repeated the Play formula to lesser effect on 18. This week Chris Wright is joined by one of the most successful music producers in the world whose career ignited when he produced Sade's debut album "Diamond Life". Sir Robin Millar is also a highly successful businessman, and he is the Chair of Scope UK, the national charity representing the 16 million disabled people in the UK.The conversation jumps straight into the deep end of things with the problems of cancel culture and the issues caused when people in business, and life, hold grudges against you. They then explore the significance of Robin having a West Indian mother and how this impacted his outlook and life experiences. They then discuss the painful subject of Robin's blindness and the difference between being born blind and developing blindness like Robin did. Chris then asks about the formative years of his career that led him to the vast success he has enjoyed for several decades, including his breakthrough in getting a job at the Château d'Hérouville recording studio in the Northwest of Paris. Robin tells his story of Sade. Producing on Diamond Life with her was what took Robin from being a successful producer to the stratosphere of being sought after around the globe. This then opens up a fascinating discussion about the two-tone music of the late 70s/early 80s that Chris Wright was instrumental in reviving, having signed record deals with bands like the Specials (famous for the song ‘Ghost Town' among many others). They return to Sade where Robin explains how she became a hit in America and then what it entails for an artist and their records to become mega-famous. They finally talk in-depth about the business of music including the ins and outs of their business partnership at Chrysalis and a possible new venture together!
