We always assume the worst when it comes to teenagers. They're often branded as lazy, uninterested and perpetually bored. Caleb Hicks begs to differ. Having spent years in the tech space, Caleb has witnessed first hand just how much teens can achieve when given the chance. Just hop onto YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, or Twitch and you'll find thousands (perhaps millions) of teenagers and young adults building massive online communities, building profitable business empires, and making big bucks while doing it. The direction we're heading in a direction of fewer rules. With the array of free tools and resources available to anyone, anywhere - the possibilities are truly endless. Just ask Ryan Kaji, who was the highest-paid YouTuber of 2020, and get this….he's 9 years old. The traditional education system that our kids go through leaves little room to take advantage of the opportunities that are out there. After leaving school (7500 hours spent in the 4 walls of a classroom), most high school grads have no clue what they want to do. Most traditional schools are ill-equipped to give young people the community, mentorship, structure, or experiences required to help them discover and chase their path. But there's a new movement of schools, organizations, and programs willing to fill this gap. Having co-founded the school behind Lambda School, Caleb has built learning programs and statewide business clubs, and teen entrepreneurship programs, as well as Apple 's ‘Everyone Can Code' program. With his new company, Factor, Caleb is helping students chart their course for after school, build experience, and launch their careers straight out of high school. Listen to Caleb share his experience of working with driven teens around the world and what he hopes for their future. Let's keep the inspiring discussion going! Apple doesn’t always hold March events. But when it does… 2015 brought us ResearchKit, the 12-inch MacBook, and the launch of the Apple Watch. 2016 was CareKit, the iPhone SE and 9.7-inch iPad Pro 2018 was an updated entry-level iPad, Everyone Can Code, and a series Education-centric announcements. 2019 was Apple News+, Apple Card, Apple Arcade, and Apple TV+, with new iPads Air and mini, and AirPods 2 moved into separate announcements to keep it all about the services. This year, given all the concerns and closures in China surrounding the coronavirus, even if Apple originally wanted to hold a March event in 2020, it may not be able to. But, if Apple does and there are no significant delays, if Apple holds either in one big event or a series of smaller releases, just what may Apple have in store for us this spring? I would like to share the interesting discussion I had with Carlos Garcia. Carlos lives in Valencia, Spain and has an Audiovisual Communication degree for Universidad de Valencia and a Master's in Secondary Education. Carlos worked for ten years as a scriptwriter for television series of comedy, drama, and entertainment programms. After working those ten years in TV, Carlos changed careers and moved into the exciting world of teaching. In addition to being a teacher, Carlos is the Communication and Innovation department coordinator so he has two different points of view as an educator and he loves it. Carlos works hard to empower his students through the use of the technology in the classroom because he is deeply convinced of the power of Apple resources for the students in the 21st century classroom. I would like to thank Carlos for taking time out of his busy schedule to talk with me.
