Welcome back to Behind the Sites, a long-overdue return to one of our favorite series here at The Next Reel. This series celebrates the technology behind the entertainment industry... specifically, the sites and apps we use to learn about the movies and shows of which we call ourselves fans.Casey Liss is a podcaster, developer, and writer from Richmond, Virginia. However, these days, it might be hard to know in which order to put those things. He's one-third of the Accidental Tech Podcast, a must-listen for principled nerds, and half of Analog(ue) on Relay FM. But he's here today to talk about his latest app, Callsheet, an entertainment industry search experience that might just earn a prized spot on the home screen of your phone.Along the way, Casey talks about the challenges that come with attempting to peel back the features of an existing monolith in order to create an app that is fast, yet still seemingly feature-complete. We talk about what goes into working on an app that is dependent on a third-party API in an era that has rendered API a dirty, profit-seeking word. Oh, and we talk about Plex. It's an all new That Real Blind Tech Show, Brian is joined by Developer, Writer, and Fellow Podcaster Casey Liss from The Accidental Tech Podcast. Casey is the developer behind the new fantastic CallSheet iOS app. The app works fantastically well with VoiceOver, and we highly recommend subscribing to the app if you are a TV and Movie fan. We kick the interview off actually talking about Brian and a little behind the scenes about his Top Gear appearance. Casey then tells us how he came up with the idea for CallSheet, and then walks us through how the app ended up being fully accessible for VoiceOver users. Casey explains how Swift UI Kit makes it easier to design apps with accessibility in mind. Casey tells us about meeting one on one with an Accessibility expert at Apple during WWDC, and how beneficial it was to him. We talk about Casey's fellow podcasters John Siracusaa and Marco Arment from the Accidental Tech Podcast, and discuss how Marco was helpful in the development of CallSheet. We discuss the Yahoo All Blind Fantasy Football League Mini Documentary and how it was all born out of accessibility and communication. We then discuss the subscription plans in CallSheet and what they include. Casey then tells us what developers think about short and long term when setting subscription costs. We then talk about the moved.org where CallSheet's information is sourced from and whether or not you can update information on it. We then discuss possible CallSheet integration with Plex and Channels. Which leads Brian to mentioning Audio Description and how fantastic it would be to have a service that mentions whether or not a title has Audio Description. Casey tells us a little about his podcast The Accidental Tech Podcast and you can subscribe to it here. You can keep up with all things Casey on his website. You can also find Casey on Mastodon and Instagram. We finish up discussing Mastodon and the blind communities exodus from Twitter, or whatever they are calling it these days. Our guest this week on Chit Chat Across the Pond is John Siracusa of the Accidental Tech Podcast, Reconcilable Differences, and Robot or Not. He's also the developer of two interesting Mac apps: Front and Center and SwitchGlass. You can find his blog at Hypercritical.co. You can find him on Twitter @siracusa I've been a fan of John's for a long time but I never knew anything about his background, so I asked him to start at the beginning and explain where he came from. Next I ask him some questions about screen brightness and arrangement of windows that I've heard him talking about and always wanted to investigate his ideas further. Then we get into a super meaty discussion where he explains display technology from LCD to OLED to QD-OLED (or Quantum Dot OLED). John was as delightful as I'd hoped, as knowledgeable as I'd expected and I had a fantastic time with him.

Casey Liss returns to Double Density to talk about all of the important topics of the day: He updates the world on his thoughts about the best regional bagel, discusses the torture and delight of ordering a new Mac, and highlights his history with audiophiles. The three then go in deep about the science surrounding COVID, and then a deep dive into music-listening habits. Special Guest: Casey Liss.
Your hosts did their first pre-flight, and it went pretty well. Next up, in direct contravention to the dictates governing the uneasy peace with ATP, there is some *computer talk*. Specifically, Merlin wants to know if John really didn't do any research, and John wants to hear Merlin's reactions to Apple's recent announcements. (Editor's Note: At one point, John accidentally/casually reveals the existence of a *queue*, and, of course, it's all Merlin can do not to stop the program, start over, and spend three hours interrogating John about this previously undisclosed queue. If John thinks he's off the hook for discussing this in the future, he is super wrong.) Then, despite putting it off for as long as they could, your hosts finally return to the concept of _grit_. Merlin confesses to being more frustrated with the fans than the concept, and John has some thoughts about oat bran. Also, Merlin is obviously more frustrated with the actual concept than he's comfortable admitting. Can we reliably reverse-engineer grit from success? And how do we account for the grit it takes many folks just to survive day-to-day? John admits to being skeptical about any skeleton key, and Merlin thinks parents get way too attached to stuff that makes them feel smart. (*Episode recorded Tuesday, October 19, 2021*)

Recorded August 18, 2020 Japan. Our place of residence. There are many things that set it apart from other places. Together, with very special guest Casey Liss (one of the hosts of both the Accidental Tech Podcast and Analog(ue), and the creator of Peek-a-view app on the AppStore, all projects that are far more successful than this one), they discuss many things that are unique about Japan. First, they talk about how Nate and Ryan ended up in Japan in the first place (That’s right folks, it’s the backstory episode!). Then, they shift to the mouse who owns everything. Star Wars, Marvel and even Tokyo’s Land and Sea. The three of them talk about the parks and what makes them different from other Disney theme parks around the world. Finally, for the main media of the week, Casey had Nate and Ryan watch one of his favorite episodes of Top Gear, where the hosts race across Japan in a Nissan GT-R against Japan’s neigh on infallible public transit system, including the world famous bullet train. First Official Loyal Fan David joins to discuss talk radio and podcasts. Kyle rants about inferior podcatchers, show notes, and Spotify’s attempt to destroy podcasting, and calls upon listeners to boycott Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and especially Spotify. Daniel and Manton react to Apple’s statement against racism, and also talk a bit about the Accidental Tech Podcast's statements. They talk about trying to figure out what we can all do as individuals in the wake of this. Daniel talks about getting a Black Ink update out the door while continuing to struggle with finishing up MarsEdit 4.4. Manton shares an update on Micro.blog progress, and shares his new “stop keeping track of things” methodology for getting things done.

Marco Arment (http://marco.org) and Casey Liss (http://caseyliss.com) are hugely successful podcasters on The Accidental Tech Podcast (http://atp.fm), but they've got an itch to create videos and have started to upload more to their YouTube channels. We talk about getting started in a new medium, the gear that matters and what it takes to be interesting on camera. Special Guests: Casey Liss and Marco Arment.
I got advanced access to the iPhone XR so I brought on one of my favorite Apple podcasters, Casey Liss of The Accidental Tech Podcast (http://atp.fm), to talk about. Casey has also been starting up a new YouTube channel so we talk about the experience of being a new video creator. Special Guest: Casey Liss.
I am excited to share the very special conversation I had with Casey Liss for this episode. Casey is a developer, podcaster and writer based out of Richmond, Virginia. He has been developing software professionally for 14 years and in an amateur capacity since long before then. Day to day, Casey writes an iOS app for a local company; in his spare time, he records the podcasts ATP and Analog(ue), as well as writing for his website. Back to Work, Roderick on the Line.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Daniel Budd for this episode. Daniel is the Director of Learning Technologies at Corpus Christi College, an Apple Distinguished School in Perth, Western Australia. As an Apple Distinguished Educator, Daniel is actively involved in research projects focussed on STEM education, robotics, information systems, big data and design thinking. Daniel's career began in Web Development and Design for learning Australian marketing and advertising firms. Daniel and I had an inspiring discussion about teaching Swift and creating engaging learning in Swift. Note: This episode was recorded March 12, 2017, prior to Apple acquiring Workflow on March 22, 2017. Apple Acquires Workflow - https://techcrunch.com/2017/03/22/apple-has-acquired-workflow-a-powerful-automation-tool-for-ipad-and-iphone/ For this episode I interviewed Nick Frey, Conrad Kramer, and Ari Weinstein - the creators of the iOS app Workflow. Workflow is an iOS automation app that debuted in the App Store in December 2014. Ari Weinstein co-founded Workflow. He dropped out of MIT to co-found the company to follow his passion for building great software and products. Conrad Kramer co-founded Workflow, where he spends most of his time engineering. He got started with iOS development 6 years ago, working on a number of side projects before joining Workflow full time. Nick Frey grew up in Iowa and studied Computer Science at Iowa State for just one semester before dropping out of school to co-found Workflow with Conrad and Ari. It is my most used and important app on my iPad and iPhone. I would like to thank Ari, Conrad, and Nick for taking time out of their busy schedules to talk to me about their coding origin stories and learning to code. In the first episode of the Swift Educator Podcast I give the origin story of the podcast and introduce myself. I lay out the purpose and goals for the podcast. Finally, I discuss what I have seen, the experiences I have had, and my students have had this school year with Swift (*spoiler alert*: it has been awesome!) I would like to thank my friend and Apple Distinguished Educator colleague Kelly Croy for his help, support, and inspiration in starting this podcast. He has a fantastic podcast [The Wired Educator Podcast](http://wirededucator.com)! I highly recommend it. Casey Liss, co-host of Accidental Tech Podcast and Analog(ue) joined me to talk about the origin story of both of his excellent podcasts, how he deals with some of the worst people on the internet, what the first year of Relay FM has been like, and his thoughts on his writing and website. I've been a huge fan of both of Casey's shows and Casey himself and I had a blast talking to him! And of course, I couldn't let him go without a little bit of Apple talk at the end! Enjoy! Marco Arment helped bring Tumblr into existence, founded Instapaper and The Magazine, co-hosted the podcast Build & Analyze, and created the podcasts Neutral and Accidental Tech Podcast with Casey Liss and John Siracusa. He has a lot going on, but less than when we recorded this two-part podcast weeks ago. (This is part 2.) I didn't know it at the time, but Marco and I spoke as he was finalizing a deal to sell the majority interest in Instapaper. Go back and listen to Episode #20: So Successful That He Fired Himself (part 1) for how Tumblr and Instapaper grew. In part 2, we talk about Marco's podcasts, The Magazine, blogging, advertising, and related topics. On Twitter: Marco Arment, Accidental Tech Podcast, The Magazine.
