I would like to share the interesting discussion I had with Carlos Garcia. Carlos lives in Valencia, Spain and has an Audiovisual Communication degree for Universidad de Valencia and a Master's in Secondary Education. Carlos worked for ten years as a scriptwriter for television series of comedy, drama, and entertainment programms. After working those ten years in TV, Carlos changed careers and moved into the exciting world of teaching. In addition to being a teacher, Carlos is the Communication and Innovation department coordinator so he has two different points of view as an educator and he loves it. Carlos works hard to empower his students through the use of the technology in the classroom because he is deeply convinced of the power of Apple resources for the students in the 21st century classroom. I am happy to share my conversation with Mike Yakubovsky. Mike is the STEM Coordinator and lead engineering teacher at Coppell High School, a 1:1 iPad Apple Distinguished School. He has been with CISD since 2003 and started the CHS School of Engineering in 2006. The School of Engineering is a 4-year pre-college engineering program focusing on design in which learners work on projects that prepare them for college STEM disciplines. Activities expose learners to design, applications of math and science, electronics, kinematics, and coding. Learners have begun Swift Playgrounds and Swift as a core component of their coding instruction. In addition to teaching, Mike is the department Instructional Coach. Mike was honored as an Apple Distinguished Educator in the spring of 2017. In 2015, the Metroplex Technology Business Council named Mike the Tech Titan of the Future for High Schools. Prior to that, Mike was presented with the Excellence in Engineering Education award from National Instruments and was named a runner up for the Discover Educator Award. Mike is the advisor for several organizations related to the Engineering program: Society of Women Engineers, Society of Minority Engineers, and the Coppell Solar Racing Team. I would like to thank Mike for taking time out of his busy teaching and engineering coaching schedule. _Note: This episode was recorded in my classroom. Please excuse the audio issues we had at times. They were a result of recording in our school._ This is a very special episode I recorded in my classroom. Six of my 11th grade students shared their views on learning to code, the Swift language, the Swift playgrounds app, and other coding related topics. I was really excited to get their feedback and thoughts about this school year so that you could hear their insights. I would like to thank the students that appeared on this episode. I hope you enjoy this episode. Sorry for the audio issues. 5: 'Your job is to be an expert learner.' with Stacy Sniegowski In this episode I had a great Swift education conversation with Stacy Sniegowski. After graduating from Purdue University in 2005, with a BS in Mathematics Education and minor in French, Stacy began her career in the Chicago Public School system. Over the next ten years, she worked in the district as a teacher and instructional coach to design learning experiences for K- 12 students and teachers in math, science, engineering, technology and foreign languages. Her training with the New Teacher Center, developed her skills in adult learning, instructional coaching strategies, and mentoring techniques. For the last two years, Stacy has worked with MobileMakersEdu to support high school teachers to bring mobile app development into their schools and iOS developers to develop their skill sets in instruction. She enjoys working with both educators and software developers from across the US and the globe. To this date, Stacy's work has advanced the learning of more than 200 teachers and almost 14,000 students. In her spare time, Stacy works with her husband to run their “creativty clubhouse” business, WholesomeZine, a place for artists to gain 21st century skills to promote their craft. She manages the operations, training, internships and social media for the company, in addition to being a DJ on WholesomeRadio. I would like to thank Stacy from taking time out of her busy schedule for an insightful and illuminating discussion about developing teachers into Swift programmers and the state of coding with Swift in schools today. Note: This episode was recorded March 12, 2017, prior to Apple acquiring Workflow on March 22, 2017. Apple Acquires Workflow - https://techcrunch.com/2017/03/22/apple-has-acquired-workflow-a-powerful-automation-tool-for-ipad-and-iphone/ For this episode I interviewed Nick Frey, Conrad Kramer, and Ari Weinstein - the creators of the iOS app Workflow. Workflow is an iOS automation app that debuted in the App Store in December 2014. Ari Weinstein co-founded Workflow. He dropped out of MIT to co-found the company to follow his passion for building great software and products. Conrad Kramer co-founded Workflow, where he spends most of his time engineering. He got started with iOS development 6 years ago, working on a number of side projects before joining Workflow full time. Nick Frey grew up in Iowa and studied Computer Science at Iowa State for just one semester before dropping out of school to co-found Workflow with Conrad and Ari. It is my most used and important app on my iPad and iPhone. I would like to thank Ari, Conrad, and Nick for taking time out of their busy schedules to talk to me about their coding origin stories and learning to code.
