College is absurdly expensive. Can a radical new model change that? With Austen Allred, Co-Founder & CEO of BloomTech. Since filming, Lambda School has rebranded to Bloom Institute of Technology. Up next ►► You Don't Need College to Get a College Education, with Salman Khan | Big Think   • You Don't Need College to Get a Colle...   When Austen Allred was going to high school, nobody said anything other than: "Go to the best college you can, pay whatever it costs, study what you love. ‘Because as long as you graduate from college, you will be set for the rest of your life." After having been preached this for decades, Austen's generation was one of the first to realize that that's fundamentally not true. Today, we're getting to a point where people are rethinking college education, and they're weighing the costs and the benefits. There are a number of schools that if you just look at the outcomes of the students that attend relative to the debt that those students incur, most students would have been better off not attending that school in the first place. This is what sparked Austen's idea for Lambda School - a radical new model to college education. Lambda School is entirely online, and they train people to be software engineers and data scientists for no upfront tuition in exchange for a piece of what you'll make later. At Lambda School, you don't pay until you're hired. Since filming, Lambda School has rebranded to Bloom Institute of Technology. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- About Austen Allred: Austen Allred is the Co-Founder and CEO of Lambda School. Money isn't everything: Why a meaningful mission is key for startup success, with Austen Allred. Money is important for startups and in venture capital, but having a lot of it doesn't make a company successful. What is actually in short supply is great people, those who can execute on ideas. To find and retain the best people requires not only paying them well, but ensuring that they are working on something that is impactful or meaningful to them. Strategies for Investing in Latin America from an Asian PerspectiveWelcome to another episode of the Asia Business Podcast! In this episode, host Art Dicker engages in an in-depth conversation with Edmond Hui, the founder and managing partner of Acacia Venture Capital Partners. Acacia is an early-stage VC fund focusing on emerging markets, particularly Latin America. Edmond shares his insights on the evolving investment landscape in Latin America, drawing parallels with the development patterns in China.Introduction to Edmond HuiEdmond Hui is a well-known figure in the venture capital space, particularly for his efforts to bridge the investment corridors between Asia and Latin America. A graduate of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and a seasoned graduate from the Global EMBA and AMP program at SEEDS, Edmond has a wealth of experience to share. Why Latin America?Kicking off the discussion, Art and Edmond dive into why Acacia Venture Capital Partners has chosen to focus on Latin America despite being based in Asia. Edmond explains, "Latin America has immense potential to catch up with China's growth trajectory. The region's expected GDP per capita rivals that of China, providing fertile ground for emerging markets."Identifying Great FoundersArt delves into the challenge of identifying great founders in Latin America, a region that traditionally lacks a deep pool of entrepreneurial talent compared to the U.S. or China. Edmond highlights the unique approach they take by looking for founders with extensive educational backgrounds and entrepreneurial experience, regardless of whether their past ventures were successful or not.Talent and Infrastructure ChallengesThe conversation turns to the well-documented shortage of engineering talent in Latin America. Edmond notes an emerging trend where individuals who study abroad in the U.S. return to their home countries, bringing valuable skills and knowledge with them. Additionally, he mentions various educational programs similar to the Lambda School that are nurturing the next generation of tech talent.Investment in InfrastructureArt and Edmond discuss the significant opportunities that Latin America's infrastructure gaps present. Edmond shares insights on how Acacia has invested in logistics and FinTech companies, leveraging the growth in e-commerce and the rapid adoption of smartphones.Mitigating Political and Economic RiskAddressing the elephant in the room, Art asks how political and economic instability in Latin America affects Acacia's investment strategy. Edmond explains that while they avoid extreme cases like Argentina and Venezuela, they focus on the microeconomics of businesses in more stable countries like Mexico, Colombia, and Chile.Sourcing Deals from AsiaGiven that Acacia is based in Asia, Art queries how the firm sources deals in Latin America. Edmond reveals that the digital shift brought on by COVID-19 has tremendously minimized geographical barriers. Regular Zoom meetings and bi-annual trips to Latin America help maintain strong relationships with portfolio companies. The Role of Pattern MatchingOne of the core strengths of Acacia's investment strategy lies in leveraging their extensive experience in China to identify potential winners in Latin America. They apply a unique pattern-matching approach, comparing emerging sectors in Latin America with those that have matured in China. This strategy helps them foresee trends and potential outcomes, providing a competitive edge.Overcoming Depressed ValuationsThe current environment of depressed startup valuations presents a golden opportunity for contrarian investors like Acacia. Edmond explains how their rigorous investment process ensures they identify and invest in high-potential companies at attractive valuations, positioning themselves for future growth. The Path to ExitsFinally, Art and Edmond discuss the critical aspect of achieving successful exits. Edmond outlines various exit strategies, including trade sales and IPOs, emphasizing that macroeconomic conditions and robust market fundamentals in Latin America make it possible to achieve substantial returns.ConclusionAs the episode draws to a close, Art thanks Edmond for sharing his invaluable insights into the opportunities and challenges of investing in Latin America. Edmond's expertise and Acacia's strategic approach make a compelling case for the tremendous potential that lies in this dynamic region. For anyone interested in learning more about how emerging markets like Latin America are reshaping the global investment landscape, this episode is a must-listen. This week, I explore the revolutionary outcome-aligned pricing model , revealing how this dynamic strategy can heighten your business to new levels of success. In this week's solo ScaleHQ podcast episode, I dive into the game-changing strategy of outcome-aligned pricing and how it can spark significant growth and differentiation for businesses. I share why this model is critical for any founder looking to navigate their next growth phase while exploring the advantages of using the model, such as: ✓ Enhancing differentiation, ✓ Accelerating customer acquisition, ✓ Improving margins, ✓ Fostering loyalty, and ✓ Generating referrals To help you explore this model for your own business, I also provide essential questions to consider and a success checklist to ensure your outcome-aligned pricing strategy is sustainable while effectively manages risk. IN THIS EPISODE, I COVER: • How outcome-aligned pricing is a powerful tool in a founder's toolkit to enable growth and differentiation. • Real-world examples from various industries (e.g., education with Lambda School, real estate with Place Real Estate in Brisbane, government tender processes, and digital marketing) to illustrate the application and success of outcome-aligned pricing. • How you can develop an outcome-aligned pricing model for your business to ensure sustainability and managed risk. • The importance of shared risk, where businesses take on more risk for greater rewards, enhancing trust and loyalty with clients. • How the innovative pricing approach can differentiate your business from your competitors while also aligning your business's success with your customer's success, fostering a partnership rather than a transactional relationship. This episode isn't just about rethinking pricing; it's about deepening connections with customers by becoming true partners in their success, creating meaningful relationships built on shared risks and rewards. #PricingStrategy #BusinessGrowth #Podcast

Follow me @samirkaji for my thoughts on the venture market, with a focus on the continued evolution of the VC landscape. We have a great conversation on top this week with Jeff Richards, Managing Partner at GGV Capital. Founded in 2000, GGV manages nearly $10B in AUM and invests across stages in both the US and Asia, and has invested in companies such as AirBnB, Wish, Opendoor, and Grab. This was a great conversation as Jeff has been both on the founder and investor side, and has spent the last 14 years at GGV where he’s had a front-row seat to the incredible evolution of the firm to what it is today. He provided us with some great thoughts on the markets today, the challenges of growing a firm, and how the current geopolitical tensions may affect international investing. About Jeff Richards:Jeff focuses on enterprise/cloud and marketplace investments, and led GGV’s investments in Appirio (acq by Wipro), Belong, BigCommerce (NASDAQ: BIGC), BlueKai (acq by Oracle), Boxed, Brightwheel, Buddy Media (acq by Salesforce), Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN), Electric.ai, Evolv OnDemand (acq by Cornerstone), Gladly, Handshake, HotelTonight (acq by Airbnb), Lambda School, Mindee, Namely, People.ai, PlushCare/Accolade (NASDAQ: ACCD), Slice, Tala, Tile, Vic.ai, Workboard, and Zylo.Prior to joining GGV, Jeff founded two software companies: R4, a supply chain SaaS business acquired by VeriSign (NASDAQ: VRSN), and QuantumShift, a telecom software business backed by Texas Pacific Group (TPG). Earlier in his career, Jeff worked in Asia and Latin America with PriceWaterhouseCoopers. He graduated from Dartmouth College. Our sponsor:At Brex, we build financial software and services to help startups scale faster. We understand that founders need to focus on building, not banking. So we’ve reimagined traditional financial systems to enable greater speed and productivity — no matter where founders and their teams are working. We offer a smart corporate card, business account, and mobile app that are easy to use from day one. No manuals needed here. Within minutes, you can deposit funds, send free wires and ACH worldwide, separate investor funds from operating expenses, earn great rewards, automate expenses, and more. Everything we do at Brex is to help founders spend less time managing expenses and reporting on your runway — and more time building your business.Get started at brex.com/ventureIn this episode we discuss:02:06 Jeff’s journey into venture capital08:30 What it took to scale GGV to what it is today14:32 How they had to shift internal mindset as they scaled fund sizes20:55 How the current market compares to previous cycles27:33 The health of the current venture market and areas where Jeff sees growth potential33:46 Advice to investors looking to create a venture portfolio39:30 How the geopolitical climate is affecting investing both in the US and globally46:26 Why emerging markets are still a strong place to look for alpha in the current market48:11 The best piece of career advice he’s receivedI’d love to know what you took away from this conversation with Jeff. And I mean this kid is really going for it, cleaning the toilet with purpose and honor. And the Tweet reads: “The kids are fighting over who gets to clean the toilet.”No freaking way I thought. This guy is claiming that he didn't have to bribe or punish his kids into cleaning the toilet. I mean, I'd believe it if it was like making their bed, folding the laundry, or tidying up their toys… but the toilet? How is this possible? On today's episode, we explore how to intrinsically motivate your kids.
