Whole generations of mobile marketers have cut their teeth on growth in the grand old times of (nearly) free money from venture capitalists, resulting in huge budgets that could be deployed and deterministically measured. Those times are over, so how do you grow when growth is hard? You become a cockroach app. Cockroach apps survive the nuclear apocalypse when nothing else does because they focus on the fundamentals, says Tynker chief growth officer Lomit Patel. “If you look at the past 5, 6, 7 years, there was such an over-index emphasis on growth at all costs, right?” Patel, who is the former VP for growth at IMVU and led direct marketing at Roku, says. “It was really cheap to get money at that time, especially in startups. So it was really about just buying your way to growing as quickly as possible.” So what do you do? Well, for starters, listen to (or watch) this episode of Growth Masterminds, brought to you by Singular.

Welcome to the TeachHER Podcast Powered by The Innocent Brown Girl Project. Our mission is to convey strategies for Grit & Grace with educators and advocates of African American and Latina Girls. Thank you for joining us today. Today, our guest is Breenae Washington. Breenae is an engineer with a passion for diversity and inclusion. Growing up, she excelled at math and science but often questioned her abilities because she didn't see other girls who shared her interests. Despite the lack of representation, with the support of her family and teachers, she found the strength to take the road less traveled. After receiving her degree from the Missouri University of Science and Technology and starting a career in IT, she quickly noticed that the lack of diversity in STEM/STEAM was still a serious issue. This fueled her desire to make a difference. Today, her mission is to bridge the gender and diversity gap in STEM/STEAM through early exposure and education. She hopes that young girls can see themselves throughout the pages of this story and are inspired to learn more. Today's episode is an overview of the different types of learn-to-code resources I've found out there. From apps to use when you're bored to full-time study programs, there are a lot of options! Before deciding which option to go for it's important to think about your own personal learning style: are you self-motivated or do you need more structure? Is there something specific you want to build straight away? Do you already have some coding experience? Do you like learning on your own or in a group? Once you have an idea of how you learn best, it's time to look at the different tools. I'll go into these in much more depth in future episodes, but in the meantime here is the overview: Free online resources (YouTube, MOOCs, dedicated learning sites, etc.) Online games & coding challenges (example: Code Wars) Paid online resources (bootcamp prep courses, Udemy, Treehouse, etc.) Mobile apps (examples: Mimo, Lrn) Bootcamps Community programs (Meetup groups, Facebook, etc.) University / school courses Programming books Figuring it out from scratch (via Github, SourceForge, etc.) Bonus method! Kids apps (example: Tynker, or this blog post) Regardless of the method you choose, the one piece of advice I have is to code every day! There is a lot to learn and you want to make sure it sticks. This episode was originally published 23 March, 2017.

In This Episode: In the last episode, I raised my concerns about the less privileged children in Africa, and how they can’t get an education due to the Coronavirus lockdown. These children do not have internet access, so how do we expect them to be able to participate in online learning? Here in the USA, most families have internet access and laptops. Several states have also decided to dedicate certain hours during the day to teach children via television. Is this something we can do as well in Africa? In This Episode: When the Coronavirus lockdown began, my kid's schools in America reached out to us and asked if we needed laptops and help with internet access so our kids can continue to do their school work from home. This got me wondering about the less privileged children in Africa. How are they getting their work done? What are we doing to help? What is the government doing to help? Given current events, we wanted to hear from a group of educators about their experiences of shifting learning online at short notice. Throughout this episode our guests, eager to support their fellow educators shared many ideas for approaches, tools software and support, which we've collated below: For creating virtual classrooms or communities, Google Classroom came out as a valuable tool that many schools are turning to at this time. There are of course other tools like Microsoft Teams and as James mentioned Tapestry for younger learners. Other collaboration tools that were discussed included Jamboard from Google which allows users to collaborate on a virtual whiteboard area. Bitpaper was also mentioned as a similar tool as was Liveboard. The above tools may support teacher -> pupils collaboration but as Jane pointed out a simple shared document if often all you need to promote collaboration. Schools are overcoming the potential safeguarding challenges and using video tools to communicate with learners. There are many of these from Google Meet (or Hangouts) and Microsoft teams which schools likely already have access to as an organisation plus a range of other tools including Zoom. Other video tools include Flipgrid, which can be used for asynchronous video communication and interaction and screen recorders such as LOOM, which can be used to capture demonstrations or on screen tutorials. For assessment, whether formative or summative, several tools were mentioned from light touch assessments using tools like Kahoot and Quizlet to more structured learning platforms like Seneca or Isaac Computer Science which use questioning to drive learning. For teaching content their were a number of places our guests recommended for either self contained activities or teacher directed tasks. Tynker, Code Combat and Purple Mash were recommended as self contained activities for learners. Whereas for more structured and progress focused activities you may want to look at the NCCE resources, code.org or Digital making at home. An important theme was teacher collaboration, finding time to connect with peers, whether immediate colleagues or educators facing similar challenges across the world. Cat mentioned the GEG Global classroom and Steve uses Facebook workplace for team chats. There are also online meetups such as #caschat & #csedresearchbookclub and many CAS communities of Practice have moved to online meetings. And finally to paraphrase Jane, in this challenging time we have needed to act rapidly to ensure teaching and learning continues. Moving forward we should each focus on getting one thing working (well) and consider the associated pedagogy before attempting the next thing. We talk with Mick Taylor, founder of the band, and bass player Tynker. Founded in 1963 there are plenty of stories! Saints N Sinners is a Classic Rock Cover Band that brings a high energy show with the very best of the music from those years. Every song is from the most popular artists of that era and will have the crowd interacting from filling the dance floor, to singing along, to fist pumping and even playing the air guitar.

Have you seen Google for Education’s brochure on 60 Tools to Inspire Students with Chromebooks? It’s an awesome resource that inspired me to make this episode for you! I don’t have time to touch on all 60 tools in one episode, but I’ll chat about the highlights. If you want the entire list, just scroll down! If you need any inspiration for tools to use, this is definitely the episode for you. One of the tools I love is Book Creator. So often, kids are given the same presentation tools over and over, and this tool can help educators break out of that box and offer an alternative to the traditional presentation. If you haven’t used it before, I think CoSpaces Edu will blow your mind! It allows students to build 3D virtual environments, that can then be viewed in virtual or augmented reality. In the literacy and numeracy tools category, I particularly love Flocabulary. You might have already seen some of their videos without even realizing it! Another of my favorite tools in this category is Newsela. This is perfect for finding non-fiction articles that are appropriate for your students. They take news articles from reputable sources, and “translate” them into four different reading levels. Can you tell I’m excited about these tools? I wish I had time to talk about all of them, but I can’t wait to highlight at least a few of my favorites! Tune in to hear about even more apps that I love, in four different categories. In This Episode: [00:28] - Welcome to episode 9 of the Shake Up Learning Show! Kasey explains her inspiration for today’s topic. [01:05] - Kasey sends a shoutout to @AlexTravisITRT on Twitter. [03:18] - Today’s question comes from Julie Cobb, who wants to know if Kasey will be doing any on-air coaching for coaches. [05:02] - It’s time to dive into the tools! Kasey starts off by chatting about one of the Content Creation category tools, Book Creator. [08:15] - Kasey shares another reason that she likes Book Creator so much. [09:16] - Next, Kasey chats about CoSpaces Edu, which allows students to build virtual 3D environments. [12:58] - We learn about another application, Explain Everything. [14:38] - The last content creation tool for today is Adobe Spark. Kasey talks about how powerful it is. [17:48] - Kasey shifts into talking about tools in the Literacy and Numeracy category, starting off with Flocabulary. [20:11] - The next tool that Kasey will chat about today is Newsela, which is great for finding age-appropriate news articles. [23:02] - Kasey talks about EquatIO, which may be perfect for math teachers. [24:50] - We shift gears back from math into reading as we hear about the next tool, Fluency Tutor. [26:03] - The last tool that Kasey wants to talk about in this category is Read&Write for Google. [27:18] - Kasey moves on to talking about the next category, STEAM Tools, and discusses Tynker. [28:24] - We learn about Flat.io, which allows you to collaboratively create sheet music. [29:44] - Code.org is one of Kasey’s favorite coding websites. [31:33] - Kasey talks about Edpuzzle, a tool from the Communication & Understanding category. [33:07] - We hear about Flipgrid, which is now completely free for everyone! [35:08] - Kasey shares her thoughts on Pear Deck, which is a favorite tool of hers (and this episode’s sponsor!). [37:59] - The last communication tool that Kasey will talk about today is Screencastify, which is a Chrome extension that lets you easily record your screen. [40:48] - Ready for the question of the week? Here we go! What are three tools from this week’s episode that you want to try in your classroom, and how will you integrate them into your curriculum? Post your answers on your favorite social media platform using the #ShakeUpLearning hashtag, or share them in the Shake Up Learning Community! [41:44] - Have you thought about getting Google Certified? Kasey can help! She helps educators get certified through her three online courses: The Google Certified Educator Level 1 Academy The Google Certified Educator Level 2 Academy Become a Google Certified Trainer Online Course If you’re interested in taking more than one of these courses, get a bundle to save big! Enrollment only opens twice a year, so sign up when it opens on May 21st or you’ll need to wait until November. If you’re ready to learn more, head to this link! [44:12] - Kasey thanks listeners for tuning in, and offers a way to give back: leave a review (using the word “y’all” if you can squeeze it in!). This helps other teachers find the podcast, and might get you a shoutout on a future episode! Then I saw Shannon Heaton released a new episode of Irish Music Stories where she ponders gender equality in traditional music. It’s a brilliant thought-provoking episode. I highly recommend. It also got me thinking I should sync our shows together. Women don’t get enough attention in Celtic music. Yet, there are a lot of incredible lasses keeping the tradition alive. First of all, I love the show. It's an incredible experience as a listener. I love the diversity and my kids always request it at bedtime as they fall asleep. As a musician (not really Celtic, but kinda folk-pop-ish with lots of love for Celtic music), I think it's a wonderful thing for indie musicians. So thank you! I'm also a podcaster (Abe's Ukulele Podcast) focused on playing and teaching ukulele and have taken little bits of style and composition from the way you put together your episodes. I don't really have music often on my show. Just hearing how you talk about things and structure the show with news, reading emails, and everything else has been a good inspiration for me in putting together my episodes. So that's the main thing: I just wanted to say thanks for everything you're doing from a listener, musician, and podcaster. I was also wondering if you've heard of the Radio Public paid listens program? It's something I found as a podcaster looking for more support. I noticed the show is on there, but that there's no ad before the show. They pay you a small amount based on your downloads and bookend the episodes with ads. It may be something worth looking in to. Anyway! Keep up the great work!" Murphy emailed a photo: " Hello Marc! Well, I'm heading back on my flight from out of country. Since it's a long flight, I decided to download a couple of your shows. One of my favourites being Instrumental Celtic Music Study Aid #347. It's soothing listening to the great compilations of music you've made once again. Thank you so much for taking the time in your life to do all of this and that little bit more!" Mark Haynes of the Navajo Nation emailed: "Hey Mark! Listening while working at the home office. Great tunes today! To be honest, I've got to listen more regularly. This is great today! Take care and have a great day!!"

Beyond the Hour of Code – The TeacherCast Educational Network
App-Based Blockly ProgrammingWelcome to Programming in the primary grades: Beyond the Hour of Code (https://www.teachercast.net/bhoc001-learning-programming/) ” Why Blockly?Blockly is a tool for building visual programming editors Teachers, once they are familiar with the platform, can spot errors much more quickly than they could find a misplaced semicolon. Blockly based apps allow students to get programming fast. In a 45 minute class period, a student can complete multiple iterations of a functioning video game, an animation, or a model. The speed of creation is especially astonishing to anyone who has spent time working in a text-based programming syntax. The work the students are doing in Hopscoth, Tickle, and Tynker, during grades 2-4 is preparing them to be productive in Scratch in grades 4-8. When students work in several different apps that are based on blockly they are able to transfer lessons learned in one programming environment into another. The fluid use of apps also helps students practice learning Programming in AppsThere are many tablet-based programming apps available and there seems to be more every day for both iOS and Android. Check the last chapter of this text for our annotated bibliography of programming apps. Programming apps are generally categorized as leveled game-style apps or as open studio apps. The leveled apps are designed to teach the user the basic principles of programming through a gamified experience where level by level the challenges become greater. Open studio apps aim to let the user design and build programs within the app that can often be shared with others using a community within the app or a web-based interface that connects to the app. One style of app is not superior to the other, they just do different things. When you’re deciding which to use in a lesson, think about your learning goals and match the app to fit. Leveled Programming AppsLeveled programming apps, like Kodable, Cody's Quest by Tynker, and The Foosuse all of the mechanics of games to guide students through a process of learning tools, commands, and structures available in that platform. These are introduced one at a time in the context of a challenge. These apps can be powerful learning tools to use in whole class instruction as well as individual and choice-based learning contexts. Kodable (https://www.kodable.com/) Cody’sQuest by Tynker (https://www.tynker.com/school/courses/show?id=11-codey-s-quest) TheFoos (https://thefoos.com/webgl/) As a teacher, you will notice that the apps self-differentiate. Students work quickly through the levels they “get” and have to spend more time with others. Even though the leveled apps can be fairly self-contained, using them in the classroom is not a simple matter of handing out iPads. There are a few tricks and structures that can help support student learning and success. TipsFor Teaching Code with Leveled AppsDon’tundercut the tutorials. Many of the apps have a good library of built-in tutorials. Ask your students to engage the tutorials and ‘read the screen’, or look for tips and solutions in the app. Focus on communication and problem-solving. Since the app is going to do the heavy lifting of teaching the programming concepts, this frees you up to teach the important things, like how to ask another student for help, or how to notice when someone needs some help and how to offer it, or how to politely refuse help when you want to work through a problem on your own. Hang back and watch body language. Observation can yield a great deal of data. A general guide is this: fist pumps = good, face in hands = bad. Build in some reflection. One of the greatest challenges to teaching with a self-contained leveled app is that it can be hard to tell how the students are doing other than what you observe. OpenStudio AppsOpen studio programming apps, like Scratch Jr, the create side of...

I would like to share the interesting discussion I had with Carlos Garcia. Carlos lives in Valencia, Spain and has an Audiovisual Communication degree for Universidad de Valencia and a Master's in Secondary Education. Carlos worked for ten years as a scriptwriter for television series of comedy, drama, and entertainment programms. After working those ten years in TV, Carlos changed careers and moved into the exciting world of teaching. In addition to being a teacher, Carlos is the Communication and Innovation department coordinator so he has two different points of view as an educator and he loves it. Carlos works hard to empower his students through the use of the technology in the classroom because he is deeply convinced of the power of Apple resources for the students in the 21st century classroom. I would like to thank Carlos for taking time out of his busy schedule to talk with me. I am happy to share my conversation with Mike Yakubovsky. Mike is the STEM Coordinator and lead engineering teacher at Coppell High School, a 1:1 iPad Apple Distinguished School. He has been with CISD since 2003 and started the CHS School of Engineering in 2006. The School of Engineering is a 4-year pre-college engineering program focusing on design in which learners work on projects that prepare them for college STEM disciplines. Activities expose learners to design, applications of math and science, electronics, kinematics, and coding. Learners have begun Swift Playgrounds and Swift as a core component of their coding instruction. In addition to teaching, Mike is the department Instructional Coach. Mike was honored as an Apple Distinguished Educator in the spring of 2017. In 2015, the Metroplex Technology Business Council named Mike the Tech Titan of the Future for High Schools. Prior to that, Mike was presented with the Excellence in Engineering Education award from National Instruments and was named a runner up for the Discover Educator Award. Mike is the advisor for several organizations related to the Engineering program: Society of Women Engineers, Society of Minority Engineers, and the Coppell Solar Racing Team. I would like to thank Mike for taking time out of his busy teaching and engineering coaching schedule. Let’s look at two very nice features of Tynker. The physics feature allows you to have falling objects and accurate projectile motion, combined with adjustments for gravity, friction, density, gravity, and much more. Cloning lets you have multiple instances of actors (like Scratch sprites), without having to duplicate code.
