He decided to start producing independent films while he still worked and developed studio projects. His latest indie film is Last Survivors.Last Survivors takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where Troy (Stephen Moyer) raised his now grown son, Jake (Drew Van Acker), in a perfect wooded utopia thousands of miles away from the decayed cities. When Troy is severely wounded, Jake is forced to travel to the outside world to find life-saving medicine. Ordered to kill any humans he encounters, Jake defies his father by engaging in a forbidden relationship with a mysterious woman, Henrietta (Alicia Silverstone). As Jake continues this dangerous affair, Troy will do anything to get rid of Henrietta and protect the perfect utopia he created. We discuss what is was like jumping from $100+ budgets to $1.5 million, how he attaches talent and how he packages his indie films for investors.Enjoy my conversation with Sunil Perkash.

Called “one of the Boston music scene's most valuable players” by The Art Fuse, percussionist, composer, and producer Julian Loida's musical curiosity and open-mindedness has propelled him towards a wide-range of sounds, genres, and artistic endeavors. He’s performed jazz, folk, and classical, collaborating with dancers, visual artists, songwriters/composers, and musicians of all stripes. The thirst to participate in and experience this range of sounds is partly a product of Loida’s synesthesia. Music is a full- body experience for him, with sounds often invoking involuntary sensations of color, texture, or even taste. Loida has toured internationally as a featured artist at Korrö, Sweden’s largest folk music festival, and played some of the most prestigious music festivals in the U.S. such as Spoleto, New World Festival, the Exit Zero jazz festival, Caramoor American Roots Festival, and Round Top Music Festival. He has performed with groups such as Alarm Will Sound, the Callithumpian Consort, and the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra. As an educator, Loida shares his scores and deep rhythmic knowledge with students of all ages. In 2017, he received his Master’s Degree in Classical Percussion from New England Conservatory. Julian is also the host and creator of A Millennial Musician, a podcast that speaks to young musicians about their journeys through music. The Question of the Week is, "What direction will the next generation of musician take us?" Julian and I discuss how his past experiences inform his current outlook on life, what we can learn from young musicians, common themes amongst the young musicians he has talked to, and his advice on having a good sense of rhythm. You can follow Julian and the podcast on Instagram @julianloida, and subscribe to the podcast on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/a-millennial-musician/id1505891593

Dear Billie Author, PTSD Spokesman, Ben Miller:  Today's new guest co-host is a multi-author, with his most recent project, Dear Billie. We're trying to help Ben get the word out there on his Kickstarter launch for this book. Ben Miller was born and raised in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania, graduating Nazareth High School in Nazareth, PA in 1993. Immediately after high school, he enlisted in the US Navy and attended boot camp in Orlando, FL. Miller was then trained in Naval Intelligence and granted security clearance two levels above Top Secret with an additional compartment. While working overseas with Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron Two (VQ-2) during the Bosnian War, Miller began suffering crippling attacks that military doctors were unable to explain. Miller was transported back to America and based on his exemplary record, he was awarded an early Honorable Discharge. It was later determined by a team of doctors with the Department of Veterans Affairs that Miller suffered from Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia and PTSD, which were both deemed service-connected. Miller elected to pursue a college degree at Lock Haven University, where he also joined the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity. He graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and a Minor in Journalism. It would be four more years and a series of personal tragedies, before Miller began his literary career as a columnist with Exit Zero, a weekly magazine based in Cape May, NJ. His initial writings were primarily historical in nature, though he also penned the occasional feature story and editorial. In 2008, Miller set his sights on a higher goal, when he created 'Donate My Weight', a campaign to use weight loss as a means to raise donations for food banks across America. He appeared on NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX news segments all over the country, along with a series of radio interviews and appearances on the 10! Show, Good Day Philadelphia and the Rachael Ray Show. In July of 2009, Exit Zero Publishing released Miller's first book, The First Resort, a hardcover coffee table book that profiles America's first resort town, Cape May, NJ. The book features 300 full-color pages and details the city's history from 1609 to 2009, accentuated with over 500 pictures. The First Resort has been well received by critics, historians and fans of Cape May from around the world, selling out of its initial printing after only a few months. The Philadelphia Inquirer named it one of the 'Top 10 Coffee Table Books of 2009'. Miller’s second book, In the Land of Exit Zero, was released in 2011. It’s a children’s book focusing on Cape May’s history and all the book’s illustrations are original oil paintings that were commissioned by the publisher. Cape May Moments is Miller’s third book about the region’s history and is currently being edited by the publisher. As Miller’s disabilities worsened with each passing year, Panic Disorder and PTSD grew into generalized anxiety disorder and depression. Meanwhile, unexpected physical challenges arose, and Miller was diagnosed with severe spinal problems, Meniere's Disease and the autoimmune disorder, Rheumatoid Arthritis. A husband and father of five, Miller continues to push back against his struggles and currently sees several private doctors on a regular basis, along with doctors from the VA. He is “Medically Retired” due to his disabilities and rated 100% disabled by the VA and Social Security. Nonetheless, Miller refuses to acquiesce to his conditions and give up living as productive a life as possible. He is an avid volunteer with fundraising for families in need and non-profit organizations in the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania and in Cape May, NJ. Miller has also voluntered his services to curate three critically-acclaimed museum exhibits for the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and is scheduled to open his fourth next Spring. For his volunteerism efforts, Miller has received...

The Exit Zero Project (www.exitzeroproject.org) is a transmedia exploration of the traumatic effects of the loss of the steel industry in Southeast Chicago, the impact that deindustrialization has had on expanding class inequalities in the United States more broadly, and how Americans talk – and fail to talk – about social class. The project includes an award-winning book, Exit Zero: Family and Class in Post-Industrial Chicago (University of Chicago Press, 2013) authored by Christine Walley, as well as a documentary film, entitled Exit Zero: An Industrial Family Story (2016) made in conjunction with director and filmmaker Chris Boebel. The book and film use first person narration to trace the stories of multiple generations of writer/producer Walley’s family in this once-thriving steel mill community. From the turn-of-the-century experience of immigrants who worked in Chicago’s mammoth industries to the labor struggles of the 1930s to the seemingly unfathomable closure of the steel mills in the 1980s and 90s, these family stories convey a history that serves as a microcosm of the broader national experience of deindustrialization and its economic and environmental aftermath. The project also includes an interactive documentary website with both a storytelling and archival component that is being made in collaboration with the Southeast Chicago Historical Museum. In this talk, Professor Walley will talk about her research into this topic and how it found expression in a book, website, and documentary film. Walley received a Ph.D. in anthropology from New York University in 1999. Her first book, Rough Waters: Nature and Development in an East African Marine Park (Princeton University Press, 2004), was based on field research exploring environmental conflict in rural Tanzania. Chris Walley and Chris Boebel are also the co-creators and co-instructors of the documentary film production and theory class DV Lab: Documenting Science Through Video and New Media.
