I'll be the first to say it, this one might not be for everyone. Today we talk about the Brown Forman Cooperage closure and the links to the FDA ruling for new warning labels on whiskey. THIS IS MY OPINION AND ONLY THAT. Hope that it opens your eyes a bit. Because it did mine. No sponsors on this one. I don t want my opinions to any way affect them. But Check out https://youtube.com/@mywhiskeyden?si=DvGDaZ-57wj06x9p January 14, 2025 Brown‑Forman Announces Series of Strategic Initiatives for Growth Company To Restructure Globally, Louisville Cooperage To Close LOUISVILLE, KY – Brown‑Forman Corporation (NYSE:BFA,BFB) announced today a series of strategic initiatives to position the company for continued growth in the dynamic global spirits market. These initiatives include restructuring the executive leadership team, implementing a workforce reduction affecting approximately 12% of the company's global workforce, and closing the Louisville-based Brown‑Forman Cooperage. “In 2025, Brown‑Forman celebrates 155 years of delivering Nothing Better in the Market. We have achieved this impressive milestone in part because of our relentless focus on evolving our strategy, our portfolio, and our organization to grow and thrive,” said Lawson Whiting, President & Chief Executive Officer. “Today's announcement will ensure we have the structure and teams in place to continue on this path, while also making investments that we believe will facilitate growth for generations to come.” Workforce Reduction To enhance operational efficiency and agility, Brown‑Forman has made the difficult decision to reduce its global workforce by approximately 12% of its 5,400 employees worldwide. Brown‑Forman is deeply committed to supporting departing employees with comprehensive transition agreements that include severance, outplacement services, and other benefits to help them through this career change. This organizational evolution will simplify and streamline Brown‑Forman's structure, allowing it to become a more agile and efficient organization and reinvest in the capabilities, technologies, brands, and people that will drive future growth. Brown‑Forman Cooperage Closure Brown‑Forman will close its Louisville-based barrel-making operation, Brown‑Forman Cooperage, by April 25, 2025. This closure, which will impact approximately 210 hourly and salaried employees, is part of the overall 12% workforce reduction. Brown‑Forman will offer severance, outplacement services, and benefits consistent with their terms of employment. Moving forward, Brown‑Forman will source barrels from an external supplier to ensure a steady supply of the same high-quality barrels at a competitive price. Collectively, these actions are projected to deliver approximately $70 to $80 million in annualized cost savings, a portion of which is expected to be reinvested to accelerate growth. In addition, the company will receive more than $30 million in proceeds in connection with the sale of the cooperage assets. The company expects to incur approximately $60 to $70 million in aggregate charges for severance and related costs associated with the workforce reduction and cooperage closing. Brown‑Forman.com. église AB Lausanne ; KJV 1 Samuel (1 Kings) 27 And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand. And David arose, and he passed over with the six hundred men that were with him unto Achish, the son of Maoch, king of Gath. And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal's wife. And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath: and he sought no more again for him. And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee? Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day. And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months. And David and his men went up, and invaded the Geshurites, and the Gezrites, and the Amalekites: for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt. And David smote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the asses, and the camels, and the apparel, and returned, and came to Achish. And Achish said, Whither have ye made a road to day? And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites. ...
Hey, it's Amy Newmark with a couple of fun Christmas stories for you—about The Tree, which of course is a big focus for most of us in December. I never make a big deal out of getting a perfect tree when I'm picking one out at the garden store, because I don't really mind if it has one bad side that I have to face into the wall. But I do gaze at it a lot at home once it's decorated. Every year we seem to compliment ourselves on how the tree is particularly nice this year even if I bought a quite obviously flawed one. Work is hard, and the Preacher of Ecclesiastes provides no antidote to the difficulty we find in work. Is there any joy in toil under the sun? For those who please God, the answer is yes. But who can please God?
Sometimes it's the simple things that make us the happiest
Kiernan Stringer preaches on Ecclesiastes 3:16-4:6
When the last kind word has vanished from our lips; When the last rich gift has left our bank account; When the last abandoned child has finally found a home—we still need grace. When the hymns we sing are clear and sweet; When we serve with fervor in the job we're given; When we've prayed for every relative we know—we still need grace. The good things grace inspires us to do will not reduce our need for grace. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Eph 2:8-10). The gift of God, made freely through His Son, is never made unnecessary by how we live beyond. In Jesus' famous parable, the ones who work from dawn, and those who start near dusk, all get the same reward. So we confess—if we are young in faith or long upon our knees—that only Christ's redeeming act ensures our destiny. There is no better gift than grace—to give or to receive. So stay in it. -Bill Knott

Today's crossword was Bill Thompson's 10th NYTimes publication, and based on this, we can't wait for his 11th. The theme was extremely clever, and there were OCEANS of great clues, including 55D, "Gee, I wish I was back in the _______" (song from "White Christmas"), ARMY; an APPLEBETTY alternative, perhaps, 30D, Linzer _________ (pastry); and 42D, 1965 film starring George Segal that was set in a P.O.W. camp, KINGRAT.So, even though this crossword was a tad crunchier than usual, we found it adorbs, most definitely worthy of a full 5 squares on the JAMCR scale.Show note imagery: Mel TORME, no relation whatsoever to his daughter Marissa TOMEI.Contact Info:We love listener mail! Sometimes it's obvious why certain things are expensive, why people will pay more for it. The feel of a luxury vehicle. The taste of one of those insane smoothies from Erewhon. The upgrade to a better seat on an airplane. It's not cheap, and maybe you don't do it all the time, but when you can afford it, you go for it. It almost makes you question this whole Stoicism thing, you wonder if perhaps you're not more of an Epicurean after all.For the last five years, we have been doing what we call the Daily Stoic New Year New You Challenge—a set of 21 actionable challenges, presented one per day, built around the best, most timeless wisdom in Stoic philosophy. 21 challenges designed to help you do exactly what King and Epictetus were talking about: Rising up, driving out the bad, and taking action on becoming the person you know you're capable of being. These aren't pie-in-the-sky, theoretical discussions but clear, immediate exercises and methods you can begin right now to spark the reinvention you've been trying for. We'll tell you what to do, how to do it, and why it works. And when next year comes around, you will not be doing the same old evil thing. Out of amazement you will find yourself saying, “I cast it out.”Join us by heading over to dailystoic.com/challenge and sign up NOW!✉️ Sign up for the Daily Stoic email: https://dailystoic.com/dailyemail

Here in the brief window between August Got Run Over By a Reindeer and Halloween, we're taking a minute to get to some listener requests! "Not Another Christmas Song" by Blink-182 is more or less what you'd expect, except maybe for the fact that it was released in 2019. In contrast, we weren't sure what to expect from "Thank God It's Not Christmas" by Sparks, but it still managed to surprise us. The ranking music in this episode is "Nothing Better" by The dang Postal Service! Thank you to Andy for these requests!

Ecclesiastes 2:18–26 (Listen) The Vanity of Toil 18 I hated all my toil in which I toil under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to the man who will come after me, 19 and who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity. 20 So I turned about and gave my heart up to despair over all the toil of my labors under the sun, 21 because sometimes a person who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave everything to be enjoyed by someone who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil. 22 What has a man from all the toil and striving of heart with which he toils beneath the sun? 23 For all his days are full of sorrow, and his work is a vexation. Even in the night his heart does not rest. This also is vanity. 24 There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment1 in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God, 25 for apart from him2 who can eat or who can have enjoyment? 26 For to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given the business of gathering and collecting, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind. Footnotes [1] 2:24 Or and make his soul see good [2] 2:25 Some Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint, Syriac; most Hebrew manuscripts apart from me (ESV)
