At times, we know how to conduct ourselves to pray. We memorized those set prayers in our childhood, taught by our mothers and in grade school, in preparation for First Holy Communion. However, as we grow and are exposed to more complex systems and experiences, there are times we may say that we need to learn how to pray. Today, that is what the disciples of Jesus do. They ask Him how they are to pray. Jesus opens their minds and teaches them what is known as the Lord's prayer.

In this warm and reflective Christmas episode of Father & Dad, Fr. Steven and Dad talk about the joy of celebrating Christmas in the parish, especially the gift of seeing so many people gathered for Mass—some who may only come a few times a year. Rather than judgment, they reflect on this moment as a sign of hope and an open door for deeper connection. The conversation turns to an important reminder: being Catholic is about more than simply showing up for Mass. While the Eucharist is central, faith is lived within a community, and salvation is not a solo endeavor. Fr. Steven and Dad talk about how parish life is strengthened when people participate beyond Sunday worship—through shared meals, fish fries, pancake breakfasts, and the simple act of being present to one another.Dad also shares his joy in leading OCIC (Order of Christian Initiation for Children), walking alongside elementary school students as they prepare to receive their First Holy Communion. Together, they reflect on how Christmas renews not only our faith, but our call to belong, participate, and grow together as the Body of Christ.

St. Kateri Tekakwitha, was born in 1656 to a Mohawk father and a Christian Algonquin mother in modern upstate New York. She contracted smallpox in her youth, which led to poor eyesight. She learned about the Christian faith from Jesuit Father Jacques de Lamberville and received Baptism and First Holy Communion on Christmas day at the age of 21. She died on April 17, 1680 at the age of 24 and Pope Benedict XVI canonized her on October 21, 2012, made her patron of the environment, and her feast day is July 14. Pat Fricchione concludes his blog post with a reminder of the need to care for our common home as explained in Pope Francis' encyclical, Laudato Si'. Fr. John-Mary Bowlin serves as Parish Priest at St. Jude Catholic Church in Gun Barrel City, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army and was ordained a priest in June of 2012. In Today's Show: As Catholics, are we supposed to back Israel, since the Bible always talks about Israel and Zion? How frequently should a child, after First Holy Communion, go to confession? Is once a month too much in making a young child (age 7) too scrupulous? What suggestions do you have to help form a young boy as an altar server in the traditional Mass? Is one spiritually safe when playing video games that include satanic themes like pentagrams, spells, tarot cards, demons, etc? How can I honor my Father and Mother if I don't have a good relationship with them? Is it better to get married outside the church or not to marry at all? Is that a trick question without a correct answer? How can our prayers atone for the sins of others? Is there a historical reason for the stereotype that Catholics don't know their Bible? Fr. Anthony Amato is the Pastor of St. Peter's Parish in Clifton Springs, New York. He was ordained as a priest in June of 2017 by Bishop Salvatore Matano of the Diocese of Rochester, New York. In Today's Show In the celebration of Holy Mass, what happens if a priest does not drink from the chalice after consecration? Is the Eucharist valid? Is the Mass valid? What are your thoughts on the practice of “intinction” where a priest dips the Body of Christ into the chalice rather than drinking from it? My son is getting married, and his fiancée's family did not raise her in any particular religion. They do not want to alienate her whole side of the family by marrying in a church. We have a good family friend who is a priest. Can they ask him to attend as a guest and bless the marriage? Who are the most important saints to pray to besides members of the Holy Family? At what point are kids obligated to attend Sunday and Holy Day masses? Are they obligated once they have received their First Holy Communion? In the Bible, the Magi see the star and follow it. But, as Catholics, we are taught not to follow astrological signs (things such as horoscopes and the like). What is the difference between the two scenarios? Are priests required to say a mass every day? If a couple was married 50-ish years and practiced birth control, but had no knowledge of the Church's teaching at the time, how do they go about confessing that? Is it a grave sin? What does it mean to “venerate” a relic and how does one do that? What kind of power do these relics have? Do we receive some kind of special graces for venerating relics? Is there a danger of putting too much faith in the power of a relic? If the devil can't read our minds, in order to plot against us, does he listen in on our confessions? Is the Earth described as flat or circular in the Bible, or is this even mentioned at all? Do you believe that there is a certain music repertoire that every Catholic should know? How can we ensure that traditional music is not lost forever? I wonder how it came to be that the church decided to dispense with some rules but kept some others. For example, things like dietary rules and rules about care of the body are out, but rules on things like marriage and tithing remain today. Do you have any thoughts on this? This week we are talking about humility. The two marks of humility are honesty and thankfulness. To understand humility better, let's look at the saints celebrating feast days this week. + Monday: On the feast day of Pope Saint Pius X, let's hear the story of Little Nellie of Holy God, the little girl that convinced him to lower the age of First Holy Communion. + Tuesday: Mary is the perfect example of humility, so let's her from her on the feast of the Queenship of Mary. + Wednesday: St. Rose of Lima knew that all she was came from God and was set aside for Jesus Christ. + Thursday: It's the feast of St. Nathaniel and Apostle. Let's remember that no matter who we are, Christ sees us too! + Friday: We round out the week with Saint Louis King of France, a man who was king, but still bowed to Jesus Christ, the King of the Universe. If you are in the Clubhouse, we hope to see you at our Virtues Study on Thursday afternoon! If you are still planning to join the next session of the BE A SAINT KIDS CLUB, make sure to get your kits now before we are sold out! https://shop.catholicsprouts.com/collections/be-a-saint-kids-club (edited) Check out the Catholic Sprouts Podcast ARCHIVES! https://catholicsprouts.com/podcast-archives/ Find fun, meaningful, faith-filled projects for your own family in the Catholic Family Resource Library. https://catholicsprouts.com/catholic-family-resource-library-signup/ Catholic Sprouts is a production of Spoke Street Media. Fr. Ryan preached this homily on May 6, 2023 at St Basil the Great Catholic Church in Brecksville, OH.
This week we return to our series on the Mass. Join us as we discuss Holy Communion, and pray for all those receiving their First Holy Communion this Spring. Let's discuss the FACT that Jesus is fully present in the Eucharist, that the Eucharist is the source and the summit of our Faith, and the state we need to be in to receive Holy Eucharist when we attend Mass. Finally, what are we called to do AFTER we receive Holy Communion? April is a GREAT time to learn and pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Download this FREE booklet to learn the prayer and add it to your family's prayer. https://catholicsprouts.com/mercy/ Check out the Catholic Sprouts Podcast ARCHIVES! https://catholicsprouts.com/podcast-archives/ Find fun, meaningful, faith-filled projects for your own family in the Catholic Family Resource Library. https://catholicsprouts.com/catholic-family-resource-library-signup/ Catholic Sprouts is a production of Spoke Street Media.
