The next single "Dust on the Wall," released on May 17th, is one of the songs where he is really working through the grief. His son's ashes sat in the room where his piano was. He would sit and play when he wanted to talk to him, which helped him work through the idea that he was gone, knowing that he was talking to "Dust on the Wall." The buffalo sustained Native Americans for hundreds of generations — until they were hunted to near extinction in the 1800s. Those stories — and how the buffalo have recovered — are the subject of the latest documentary from Ken Burns, called “The American Buffalo.” University of Illinois Professor Rosalyn LaPier was featured prominently in the film. In October, before a live studio audience in Urbana, she talked with Brian Mackey about the film and her background as a member of the Blackfeet of Montana.

To continue our conversation about Generation X and the culture they grew up with, host Brian Mackey took a trip to the Illinois State Museum in Springfield to visit its exhibit "Growing Up X." The exhibit has now moved to the ISM's Lockport Gallery and will be open there through May 2014.

His expertise and interest in web development has given Brian the opportunity to continue serving not just Pennsylvania but multiple states as their webmaster and content developer. His organization skills also landed him a job as the Administrative Assistant with the DoubleTree Hotel in Reading, PA. He is the lead person for our registration tables at the state conventions. Gloria Nathan-Cherry was elected to the seat of board member for the Community Service Division! Harriet Go was elected as the 2nd Vice President for the National Organization of Blind Educators! Harriet Go also is the new Kids Camp Director! Stacie Leap was nominated as a member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee! Two National Scholarship winners are from our state: Joann Kim and Ashley Rogers! Accessible Pharmacy received the Bolitin Award! Lynn Heitz presented at the annual meeting for the Diabetes Action Network Division and the Blind Seniors division about Accessible Pharmacy! Esther Gillyard performed at the Performing Arts Division Showcase of Talent! In the past Eric had been a member of the Greater Philadelphia Chapter, and he did travel to a few of our National Conventions. The U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago announced Friday that state Sen. Tom Cullerton was under indictment for embezzeling from a local branch of the Teamsters union. He’s accused of collecting more than $274,000 in pay and benefits for “little or no work.” Cullerton denies the charges.Meanwhile, House Speaker Michael Madigan is demanding that the plaintiffs in a federal lawsuit against him offer evidence of his power and influence. Major U.S. indexes rebounded following two consecutive down days, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average seeing fractional gains, the S&P 500 up 0.4% and the NASDAQ Composite rising 0.3%. Although markets began with flat trading, they responded positively to late-day remarks from New York Fed President, John Williams, signaling an imminent potential rate cut. Meanwhile, Netflix’s stock tumbled 10% on weak quarterly subscriber counts. Netflix lost 130,000 U.S. subscribers during the second quarter—its first drop since 2011. On the earnings front, Microsoft rose nearly 3% in after-hours trading after reporting nearly $33 billion in quarterly revenue. This marks a 12% sales gain, topping analyst projections by nearly $1 billion.

Boeing fell nearly 3% on news that production of its 737 Max could be delayed by up to three months after new problems arose with its software. Meanwhile, Nike’s stock crept up just over 1% after the company missed its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings forecast but beat revenue expectations. Footwear and athletic apparel helped push Nike’s sales up 4% to more than $10 billion.

Meanwhile, Foot Locker’s stock fell nearly 17% on the footwear retailer’s forward-guidance reduction and first-quarter earnings and sales shortfall.

Meanwhile, Costco’s stock rose 4% in post-session trading after the wholesale retailer reported a 7% quarterly gain in comparable sales and 26% e-commerce sales surge.

Meanwhile, General Electric (ticker: GE) dropped more than 3% on news that the company will delay its third-quarter earnings announcement from October 25 to October 30. GE noted that the delay was necessary to allow newly appointed Chairman and CEO Larry Culp to “complete initial business reviews and site visits.”

Despite rallying from steeper losses earlier in the day, all major U.S. stock indexes closed the day down, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 falling 0.2% and the NASDAQ sliding 1.8%. Rising long-term Treasury bond yields, which are currently experiencing multiyear highs, partially contributed to that sell-off over concern that investors may begin to shift money from the stock to bond market. Meanwhile, Constellation Brands advanced more than 5% after the company beat quarterly earnings expectations and raised its full-year forecast.

It was a flat day with fractional movement for major U.S. stock indexes as Hurricane Florence continued to dominate headlines. In terms of economic news, the Commerce Department released August retail sales data, which revealed a 0.1% spending increase versus July. Despite that modest advance coming in well below economic forecasts, the longer-term trend of robust consumer spending remains unchanged. Meanwhile, NiSource, Columbia Gas of Massachusetts’ parent company, closed the day down 11% following Thursday’s pipeline explosions.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development released new home sales data for July, revealing a nine-month low that is largely the result of a lack of supply rather than demand.

We also saw weekly jobless claims data released—revealing a nearly 50-year low among people applying for benefits. This is a positive indicator for the broader economy because it implies a strong employment picture and, thus, a healthy consumer.

NYC based singer/songwriter Brian Mackey joined me on the show for a fantastic conversation about his life and music. His various influences come through in his songs, and his writing style is very autobiographical. You can tell that he has lived every note. He is a classically trained pianist and was inspired by Bob Dylan & Jim Croce as much as Mozart & Beethoven. Brian brings it all together and has an amazing story to tell. At age 5, Brian sat at an out-of-tune piano and did his best John Lennon. From there, he never looked back. Brian spent a lot of time growing up in Havana, Florida. Surrounded by beautiful land and paddle-weilding principles that were eager to dole out the corporal punishment, he reflects now with song and lyric. The great Frank McCourt would say, "a normal childhood is hardly worth your while". As an accomplished lyricist and singer/songwriter, his song Painted Red aired on the Disney/Family Channel series, Naturally Sadie. Most recently his song, "Sunshower", was included on the Songs of Love for Japan CD, the official music contribution to the Japan disaster relief sponsored by Shelterbox. His song was among great artists such as Sara Barielles, Ani Difranco and others.  Brian just released his latest album, "Honest Love" and recorded the title track video with director NickCavalier, in Chicago.
