It's Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Ilan Pappe, professor of history at the University of Exeter and Director of the European Centre for Palestine Studies, author of Lobbying for Zionism on Both Sides of the Atlantic, to discuss the state of affairs in the Middle East a year after October 7th, 2023. Then she speaks with Rakan Abed El Rahman, correspondent at the National News stationed in the Gaza Strip, to discuss what it has been like reporting on the Israel/Gaza conflict since October 7th of last year. First, Emma runs through updates on today's voter registration deadlines, Israel's decimation of Gaza, the IDF's failing invasion of Southern Lebanon, Blinken's role in approving the IDF's bombing of aid trucks in Gaza, France's military aid to Israel, the Harris campaign, SCOTUS, Biden's immigration policy, and the impending Hurricane Milton, before parsing through Elon Musk's simultaneously cringeworthy and genuinely concerning appearance at Trump's rally in PA. Professor Ilan Pappé then joins, diving right into the rapid escalation and exacerbation of Israeli society and the Israeli state's genocidal desires, first tackling the clear signs of the citizenry's right-wing turn and the Netanyahu Administration's messianic nature in the wake of the 2022 elections, before unpacking his thoughts on how the rapid radicalization during Israel's brutal ethnic cleansing of Gaza (now expanded into a regional conflict) has exposed extensive cracks in the state of Israel. After briefly touching on the role of Israeli's backlash to Netanyahu's fascistic judiciary reforms – and the particular dearth of any connection between the violence imposed on Palestinians and the fascism coming home to roost – in demonstrating the precarious state of the country, Professor Pappé steps back to explore this evolution as a natural progression of right-wing colonial ideology in direct conflict with the world it's invading, bolstered by Israel's proactive violence in stamping out any conditions for change. Ilan then walks Sam and Emma through the evolution of the super-alliance that backs the Zionist state, exploring the movement's roots in an Evangelical Christian movement that sought to capitalize on anti-Semitic sentiment and the growing aims of the British Empire, putting together an overwhelmingly powerful coalition before the Jewish community even came to the fore, also looking at the incredible evolution of the Zionist lobby in the United States and how Israel's ability to stamp out conditions for change extends well beyond its border. After expanding on the ever-growing international backlash to Israel's genocidal apartheid regime, Pappé dives deep into the need to recenter Palestinian actors in this fight, and what must be done to achieve decolonization in the region as quickly and with as little violence as possible. Rakan Abed El Rahman then looks to the ongoing devastation Israel is inflicting on the Gaza Strip, unpacking the ever-rising death toll, the debilitating material and mental conditions, and the complete decimation of civilian sectors in the region, before stepping back to outline how very real (while certainly less extreme) all of those issues were *prior* to October 7th of last year. Expanding on this, El Rahman walks Emma through the near-total nature of Israel's reign of terror in Gaza since Hamas' attack last October, even in contrast with Israel's other major offensives against Gaza over the last two decades, before wrapping up by sharing his (and others') experiences of Israel's explicit and targeted terrorizing of journalists and medical personnel, and the insane need for the West (and Israel) to recognize Palestinians as humans rather than terrorists. And in the Fun Half: Emma and the MR Team reflect on the Veepstakes after last week's debate, parse through Donald Trump's recent comments on the real estate value of colonizing Gaza, and watch Google's former CEO attempt to argue that providing infinite growth for AI is more important than tackling climate change. Today:It's not just Ohio: Around the country, Haitian communities are facing threats of violence after incendiary lies made by former president Trump and JD Vance. We talk with former State Rep -- the first Haitian-American to hold public office in Massachusetts -- Marie St. Fleur. And, we speak with two award-winning GBH filmmakers about their work highlighting the role of Vice Presidents past, present and future… Cameo George, Executive Producer for American Experience and Rainey Aronson-Rath from Frontline will discuss their new documentaries on the VEEP-stakes.
Earlier this week, Vice President Kamala Harris announced that she'd invited the governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, to be her running mate in this fall's presidential election. Walz has pretty conventional views of Israel for a Democrat: he believes in Israel's right to exist and to defend itself, he has previously spoken at an AIPAC gathering, he condemned Hamas after October 7, that Hamas is not representative of the Palestinian people, that Israel is guilty of allowing too much civilian harm and civilian casualties in Gaza, that there must be a two-state solution, and that Israeli settlements are a barrier to that political outcome. That's what any number of other candidates on the vice-presidential shortlist also think, including Arizona senator Mark Kelly and Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro. For that matter, until the announcement, Shapiro was widely thought to be the front-runner by virtue of his popularity in what's expected to be the most important swing state in the election. Why didn't Harris select him? Over the last week, there's been an enormous amount of speculation about the reasons. One of the most foreboding possibilities is that Shapiro is a religious Jew, and among the activist class of the Democratic party, being an Israel-supporting religious Jew is now a liability. Of course, no one from the campaign or any Democratic official has said that Walz's selection had to do with that liability. But many of America's Jews—Democratic and Republican alike—took it that way, and so did many of America's anti-Semites. To disentangle the role that such factors may have played in the Harris campaign's decision, host Jonathan Silver speaks here with the longtime political reporter and editor of Jewish Insider, Josh Kraushaar. Together, the two look at what the activist opposition campaign looked like, and how that campaign interpreted the selection of Walz as a validation and a victory.

Vice President Kamala Harris has officially chosen Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her 2024 running mate. The choice marked a minor surprise, as pundits had anticipated her final candidate to be tied to a battleground state, like Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro or Arizona Senator Mark Kelly. While Walz enjoys popularity in his home state, the Governor self-identifies as a progressive, which could impact moderate voters' preferences in November. FOX News Radio Political Analyst Josh Kraushaar joins the Rundown to analyze why the Harris campaign settled on Governor Walz as the VP pick, what role he'll play in the Democrats' 2024 strategy, and why VP Harris will soon face harder scrutiny on the campaign trail. Since the search engine launched in 1998, Google has become so popular that it is now a commonplace verb, synonymous with browsing online. Google's dominance has expanded quickly since then, with a July 2024 report showing Google currently holds 87 percent of the market share of search engines in America. However, this week a federal judge ruled that the tech giant manipulated its popularity and has acted illegally to monopolize the online search market. Visiting Fellow at the Heritage Foundation's Tech Policy Center, Mark Meador, joins to break down how this ruling will affect Google and the ongoing fight to reign in Big Tech. The Washington Post's Jeff Stein stops by to discuss his extensive new piece investigating the ever-ballooning U.S. international sanctions regime. Despite Biden recently bragging he's leaving office with the U.S. not involved in any foreign conflicts, the U.S. now has sanctions in place in over a third of all nations around the world, including more than 60% of “developing” nations. Jeff walks us through this increasingly central policy of worldwide economic coercion, how it shapes American imperial aims, and some intended & unintended consequences of the exponential expansion of sanctions in the 21st century. Then, we take a quick look at the state of the Veepstakes, Josh Shapiro's whole deal, and of course, RFK Jr. and the road-kill bear. Happy Monday! Sam speaks with Dana Fisher, director of the Center for Environment, Community, & Equity and professor in the School of International Service at American University, to discuss her recent book Saving Ourselves: From Climate Shocks to Climate Action. First, Sam runs through updates on Harris' presidential candidacy and VP pick, the next presidential debates, more Trump-era corruption, Trump's legal woes, Elon Musk's political malfeasance, the US Judicial system, Israel's torture regime and genocidal offensive, civil unrest in the UK and Bangladesh, and a global stock market crash, also diving into the climax of Harris' veepstakes as Shapiro's past comes under fire. Professor Dana Fisher then joins, diving right into the astounding failure of the last few decades of the West's attempt to “handle” the climate crisis, the acknowledgment of the politics of climate change alongside the refusal to acknowledge the expansive social and economic reforms needed to address it, and the major divide in who has contributed to (and is affected by) climate change. Next, Professor Fisher addresses the idea of Harris (or any Democrat) as a “savior,” and why Biden's climate agenda, despite being far and away the most progressive of any US President, was still too little too late, parsing through the major wins of his platform, and where he fell short. After walking through the divisions between the “insider” and “outsider” games of the climate movement, and the major roles they play in disrupting capital's status quo and pushing material change, Dana and Sam wrap up with a brief conversation on activating people on this issue, assessing the efficacy of the electoral strategy, and platforming the major players in the climate movement. And in the Fun Half: Sam unpacks the gritty details behind RFK's insane Bear-Carcass story, Usha Vance's attempt to defend her husband's insane misogyny, and Donald Trump's hop onto the anti-olympic transphobic bandwagon. Francesca Fiorentini takes TYT to task over their legitimization of absurd right-wing transphobic talking points, Jordan Peterson tries to hook up Elon Musk with the manly meat diet, and Mehdi Hasan continues to pull no punches when covering the history and ongoing execution of Israel's apartheid state. Hillsdale College Radio General Manager and Radio Free Hillsdale Hour Host Scot Bertram is in for Jim today. After a brief update on the prisoner swap with Russia, Scot and Greg discuss the final jockeying among Democrats to be the vice presidential nominee, July's worse-than-expected unemployment report, and Kamala flubbing her first unscripted moment in weeks.First, they examine the state of the Democrats' veepstakes, including some last-minute efforts to pour cold water on the possibility of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro joining the Harris ticket. They also comment on how aggressively some figures are campaigning for the job when historically they have downplayed any interest.Next, they wince as the July unemployment report shows significantly fewer jobs created than expected last month, plus an uptick in the jobless rate and the number of Americans unemployed overall. Is this evidence of a possible recession on the horizon or just a one-month anomaly? Finally, they react to Vice President Harris finally having an unscripted moment on camera. And even with the softest of questions, her typical word salad was back. Scot says Harris would never have survived a full primary campaign and he marvels at the fawning coverage over her campaign despite the fact she's done absolutely nothing of note in the past two weeks, other than raise money.
When President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and the Democratic party rallied around Kamala Harris as his replacement, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper was widely considered to be a top choice to serve as Harris's running mate. But Cooper did something unusual: he told the Harris team he didn't want to be considered as her running mate. On this episode of Deep Dive, host and Playbook co-author Ryan Lizza talks to Cooper about why he took himself out of contention and how some weird local politics influenced his decision. Also discussed in this episode of the show: Cooper's conversations with Harris, Biden, and Nancy Pelosi as Democratic leaders navigated the post-debate crisis that lead to Harris's ascension; how Cooper coached the president in the last days of Biden's campaign; and whether or not you should believe the hype about Democrats flipping North Carolina this year. Ryan Lizza is a Playbook co-author for POLITICO. Roy Cooper is the governor of North Carolina. Kara Tabor is a producer for POLITICO audio. Alex Keeney is a senior producer for POLITICO audio.

It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Ari Berman, national voting rights correspondent at Mother Jones, author of Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It, to discuss President Biden's recent proposals to reform the Supreme Court. Then, he speaks with Adam Johnson, co-host of the Citations Needed podcast & writer at The Column newsletter on SubStack, to discuss labor unions efforts to gain commitments from the Harris campaign to stop sending military aid to Israel. Then, he speaks with Seth Fleisher & Emily Baldwin, co-founders of the political action organization Walk the Walk! First, Sam runs through updates on Israel's major escalations in Iran and Lebanon, US Presidential polling, student debt relief, Project 2025, JD Vance's misogyny, the Trump would-be-assassin, elections in Arizona and Venezuela, reports on the mass deaths of native children at US boarding schools, rising homelessness and rents, and the passage of COSA, before diving into the major developments in Kamala Harris' Veepstakes. Ari Berman then joins, diving right into the complete untethering of the 6-3 conservative majority US Supreme Court from any jurisprudence or ideology, and it's all-around corruption exposed over the last few years. Berman then looks to Biden's new platform for reforming the Supreme Court, taking a moment to walk through each of the three major elements on this agenda, including 18 year term-limits with 2-years between nominations, an ethics code, and a constitutional amendment to undo the recent decision on presidential immunity. Adam Johnson and Sam then walk through the major push by unions in recent months to challenge the Biden Administration's support for and arming of Israel's ethnic cleansing of Gaza, with Shawn Fain going as far as to consider the UAW unendorsing Biden, before looking to the current moment, tackling their response to Harris all-but taking Biden's place on the ticket. Stepping back, Adam walks through the evolution of the Biden Administration's approach to the “ceasefire” demand, from banning the use of related terms outright to now using the hope of one (and the supposed negotiations) as a tantalizing carrot, redefining the conversation away from the US using their leverage to push a cessation of hostilities to now what is largely an Israeli PR strategy focused on the supposed “facilitation” of negotiations, despite the obvious bad faith intentions. Wrapping up, Johnson assesses the narrative around Harris' approach to Gaza, why her stance remains unclear to both unions and the public, and what to expect from her campaign moving forwards. Lastly, Seth Fleisher and Emily Baldwin join in as they walk through Walk the Walk's project to refocus energy, labor, and money to grassroots, progressive organizing, tackling the major dearth of funds and labor in the vast majority of down-ballot races, as well as the importance of relying on existing grassroots organizations to build on and strengthen networks of community trust and civil engagement. After expanding on the major races and organizations they are working with during this election cycle, they wrap up with what we can do to join the effort. And in the Fun Half: Sam watches Tim Pool fantasize about his Lord and Savior Donald Trump and Jesse Watters walks through the bio-political process of gender fluidity. Mark Robinson questions the low-effort selfishness of Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, which JD Vance expands on, and Hung Cao discusses saving Virginia from Monterey Bay Wiccans. Kamala Harris will face barriers as a woman running for the Presidency. “Women constantly have to credential themselves,” Jennifer Palmieri, a veteran of Democratic politics who served in the Clinton Administration, says. She was also the director of communications for the Obama White House, and then for Hillary Clinton's 2016 Presidential campaign. Harris will “need to remind people of what she has done in her career and what she's done as Vice-President, because people assume that women haven't accomplished anything.” But Harris also has notable strengths as a candidate, and, having avoided a bruising primary campaign—and having been handed a torch from the incumbent—she has advantages that no other woman running for office has had. For a woman candidate, the world has changed since 2016, Palmieri believes. She shares insights into how Joe Biden was finally persuaded to step out of the race, and explains what she meant by advising women to “nod less and cry more.”
Today, Jim and Greg discuss polls emerging that show Americans believe Vice President Harris helped to cover up President Biden's decline, Donald Trump not committing to debate Harris yet, and the reluctant endorsement that the Obamas finally gave Kamala.First, they raise a double-fisted good martini to polls that confirm a broad acknowledgement of the cover-up of Biden's declining health, with many Americans believing Kamala had a role to play in concealing his true condition. They also observe how she is slowly coming more and more into the spotlight, taking on duties and making appearances that one would expect of the president. And they applaud the Free Beacon's Matthew Continetti for pointing out the media whiplash on how it characterizes Biden.Next, they comment on Trump's statement that he won't commit to debate Kamala until it has been confirmed that she will be the nominee. Jim thinks that this is not the right move, saying Trump should be pushing for as many debates as possible. Finally, they cringe through a video of the Obamas endorsing Kamala over the phone, which was released in the middle of the night. Jim and Greg also break down the Democratic veepstakes. Please visit our great sponsors:Zbioticshttps://zbiotics.com/3MLUse code 3ML at checkout to save 15% off your first order. As promised four years ago, President Biden passed the torch to Vice President Harris. We officially have a new Democratic candidate for president! This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum digest yet another HISTORIC week of news and its implications for the presidential race. Should Harris debate Trump, even if it's on Fox? How will Democrats campaign strategy change and who should be her VP? Are voters ready to elect a Black woman president?? All that and more… We say her name and honor the memory of Sonya Massey. We were all horrified to hear about and witness yet another brutal killing of an unarmed Black woman at the hands of the police– in her own home after she had called 9-1-1 for help!
