Strap in and charge up the Mr Fusion, because this week on Born To Watch, the boys head back, forward and sideways through time with our full Back to the Future Part 2 (1989) Review. Whitey, G Man and Will settle into the DeLorean for one of the most ambitious sequels of the 1980s, breaking down timelines, hoverboards, self-lacing Nikes and all the glorious 80s optimism jammed into Robert Zemeckis' wild ride. The episode kicks off with the crew riffing on 1989 as a powerhouse movie year, then quickly dives into how Back to the Future Part 2 faced enormous expectations. With a to be continued tease at the end of the original, fans were primed, and the pressure was real. As the boys say, sequels rarely outshine their predecessors, but every now and then you get an Empire Strikes Back or a T2. So where does this one land?Whitey shares how the film was a childhood favourite, the one he rewatched the most, and how time has shifted his appreciation back to the original. Gow reveals he saw it at the cinema on release and has clocked well over 15 viewings since, instantly transported by Alan Silvestri's iconic score. Will talks about how the franchise has simply always been there, one of those movies that defined growing up.From there, the episode fires through the good, the bad and the very strange. There's deep love for the hoverboard, the power-lace Nikes, and that brilliant rooftop confrontation where Marty lures Biff over the edge before swooping up in the DeLorean. The crew gives full credit to the groundbreaking split-screen effects, the energy of Michael J. Fox juggling multiple characters, and the perfect dual performance from Fox and Christopher Lloyd, who are operating at peak one-two punch level. They also dig into the weird bits the film never fully explains. Could Old Biff actually operate the DeLorean? Why does he get sick travelling through time when no one else ever has? Why do Jennifer and Jennifer faint from seeing each other, but Biff does not? How does Marty not realise Hill Valley 1985 has turned into a dystopian biker slum the moment he steps out of the car? From Jaws 19 to the brilliant Jaws VHS window cameo, from Indiana Jones nods to manure trucks, the boys unpack every Easter egg this film throws at you. And of course, there's a big chat about whether Biff Tannen's alternate 1985 persona is really just 80s Donald Trump in a green tracksuit. (Spoiler, yes.)The episode also dives into box office numbers, casting trivia, Elizabeth Shue stepping in as Jennifer, and some cracking tangents, including Huey Lewis, yacht rock, Stranger Things, The Little Mermaid, and even John Farnham fronting LRB.By the time the boys reach question time, they've covered everything from the butterfly effect through to whether a single rich bloke can really break the fabric of time. It's pure Born To Watch chaos, big laughs and deep nostalgia for one of the great sequels of our generation. If you love time travel, manure trucks and three blokes talking absolute cinematic nonsense, make sure you follow Born To Watch on Spotify and Apple. Drop us a five-star review, send us a voicemail at borntowatch.com.au and buckle up for the next kickass credit song from the House Band. Interview by Kris PetersWhat started out as a bit of fun on a Monday night at Sydney's Frankie's Pizza back in 2012 has quickly developed into a global sensation.Initially formed to beat Monday night boredom at the home of live music in Sydney, Frankie's World Famous House Band has grown from such humble beginnings to being a mainstay on the Australian music scene for both punters and international touring musicians. For ten years until its sad closing in 2022, the band rocked the stage at Frankie's Pizza, along the way collecting a healthy dose of international scalps under their belt who frequented the venue just to catch a glimpse of the house band. Members of bands such as Megadeth, Steel Panther, White Snake, White Zombie and Cheap Trick have all at one time shared the stage with the house band, while they are now also an in demand gun for hire as touring bands for stars such as Tim 'Ripper' Owens who enlists their help each time he comes over. They are a band made up of accomplished musicians, but, more importantly, people who love music, and that infectious energy night after night is one of the major reasons they survived when Frankie's fell. This weekend sees Frankie's World Famous House Band venture outside of their home base of Sydney for a rare visit North, where they will be playing at Lefty's in Brisbane on Saturday, June 7, and Mo's Desert Clubhouse in Burleigh Heads the following night. HEAVY jumped at the chance to chat with drummer and the legend behind Frankie's Pizza, Jordan McDonald to find out more."Yeah, we never do this," he replied when we mentioned the fact that the band doesn't play outside of Sydney often. "We get out of town if we're the house band for a touring artist, that happens every now and then. That's kind of, I guess, the niche of the Frankie's World Famous House Band. If there's an act of cult appeal who's coming to Australia but leaving the band behind, we'll fill in and play, so we'll take that around the country. But just as us doing it our way, it's kind of a matter of policy that we never leave Sydney, so this is something different."We question what policy could ever confine any band to one city before Jordan smiles."It was bred in Sydney, and it's kind of where it makes sense," he laughed. "It's part of the fabric of the zone, so we try and kind of keep it that way. But if an opportunity like this comes up - and it doesn't happen all that often - we say yes to most things. So here we are!"In the full interview, Jordan focused on the upcoming performances of Frankie's World Famous House Band in Queensland, scheduled for June 7 and 8. He provided background on the band, emphasizing their unique position as a house band that typically does not tour outside Sydney. He highlighted their speciality in high-energy covers of classic rock songs and their collaborations with well-known artists, which have bolstered their reputation.Jordan introduced us to the rest of the band, saying that they don't have a permanent set vocalist in preference of using a range of singers to complement each performance. He ran us through the birth of the band and how he came to be involved, the band name, some of the people they have shared a stage with, his other music and business ventures and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Former bandmates of the late Rock & Roll Hall of Fame musician, Denny Laine, just released a new tribute version of one of Laine's signature songs, Time To Hide, to coincide with what would have been Laine's 80th birthday, October 29. The song, released under the artist name McDonald's Farm, will feature Steve McDonald, Grant Roberts and Laine's former Wings bandmate Steve Holley, with keyboards and production by Graeme Watt at the Seagate Studio Dundee. Through the magic of digital recording technology, it will also feature Laine on harmonica taken from the last time he performed on stage with them. When producing the accompanying music video, the assistance and generosity of Paul McCartney's company, MPL Communications, was invaluable in allowing Graeme Watt who produced the video the use of both photos and video footage of Denny with Paul and Linda McCartney from his time in Wings. This was combined with footage from Denny's later years playing with Steve and Grant at London's Marquee Club and The Old Trout in Windsor (sadly no longer there). To complete Time To Hide, the cover artwork was created by world famous artist Shannon MacDonald. It captures the man, the musician, and the vision of Denny in a spectacular new painting.https://mcdonaldsfarmband.com/homehttps://www.facebook.com/mcdonaldsfarmbandDenny performing Time To Hide on Rock Show! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nLYtVrUf6Y
Florida native McCoy Gibbs made the move to Nashville, Tennessee at the age of 18 to pursue a Music Business degree at Belmont University. He not only earned that degree, but also made lifelong connections and friendships while falling in love with the city, energy, and opportunity that is Nashville. The crazy part is that Gibbs didn't really learn to play drums until his college years. For this natural musician, drums and rhythm came naturally and he found his groove, literally. After college, Gibbs emerged as a drummer while playing with pop/rock band Hot Celle Rae. He then went on to become an independent drummer to soak in all the music he could. During this time he met tons of musicians, bands and artists, cut his teeth on the grind of Broadway bars and “honky tonks,” and jumped in a van for a random show in Montana. He loved every minute of it. In 2013, his hard work paid off when Gibbs successfully auditioned for CMA-nominated Duo of the Year, Love and Theft, and hit the road for the busiest year of his life thus far. It hasn't slowed down for him since. From touring, live TV performances, music videos and award shows, Gibbs has kept himself quite busy. Gibbs is currently playing with 2017 CMA New Artist of the Year nominee Lauren Alaina, and continues to find other ways to fill in the occasional off day with sessions, shows, and housework. If there is an example of hard work, passion, and preparation paying off, McCoy Gibbs is that example.
