Stephannie Weikert is a Certified Yoga Therapist who teaches smart, capable men and women to manage stress with some of the most fundamental, yet little-known principles of yoga. She’s been teaching therapeutic yoga for stress in studios, hospitals, businesses, and with her 1:1 students since 2005. And now she’s on a mission to make meaningful personal growth doable and practical with her signature Make Peace with Stress method so more people can get unstuck from patterns of stress and be more present, calm, and confident—all without becoming a die-hard yogi. When not mentoring people who struggle with stress, Stephannie can usually be found under a pile of books or working on writing her first book about how to take charge of your chaotic mind and focus on what’s really important to you. I asked Stephannie to come on the show to talk about how she helps people manage stress, but also to share her own stories around mental health and sexuality that have guided her coaching over the years.  Listen in to hear Stephannie share: How compartmentalizing different parts of our lives leads to hiding and shame How she used numbing habits (esp drugs & alcohol) to cope How her compartmentalization led her to struggling with Trichotillomania to the point of pulling out all of her eyelashes and eyebrows The moment when she finally and truly saw herself and decided to start to change her habits How she was able to create an entire new set of coping skills that served her throughout her life How her she noticed shifts in her sexuality in her forties and how she responded How we all have a inner compass that is exactly right How to use self study, surrender and intention setting to manage stress and your life Why you should pay more attention to discomfort and stress - and what it’s trying to signal The gifts of yoga that carry over into all areas of life Links mentioned: Connect with Stephannie Stephannie on Instagram Stephannie on LinkedIN Stephannie on Facebook Thank you to our sponsor: Gemmist: Go to Gemmist.com to get your personalized recommendation and enter SHAMELESS at checkout for 20% off and free 2-day shipping.

On May 7, 2013, police and paramedics responded to a home in Calgary, Alberta on a report of a teenager not breathing, but nothing could have prepared them for what they were about to see. 15-year-old Alex Radita, who was dead well before his father called 911, weighed only 37 pounds. He was literally nothing but skin and bones, and his body was covered with necrotizing ulcers, including one so deep it left his salivary gland exposed. After an autopsy revealed Alex’s death was caused by a septic infection secondary to extreme starvation and untreated diabetes, his parents -- Romanian immigrants who believed God, not medicine, would save their son -- were arrested and charged with first degree murder. This is a story of a couple so hell bent on being right that they allowed their son to waste away for years rather than give him the medication and food he needed to survive. It’s the story of the exposure of massive weaknesses in the Canadian child welfare system. Most importantly, it’s the story of a bright, courageous boy who tried to smile even as he entered the final stages of starvation and the catastrophic infection that took his life. This is the horrific story of Alex Radita.Links discussed in this episode: Crime Beat podcast episode, The Boy Who Fell Through the Cracks - https://globalnews.ca/news/6045854/crime-beat-podcast-boy-who-fell-through-cracksVideo of Alex on his 15th birthday, released without sound by order of the court (warning: may be disturbing to some viewers) - https://fb.watch/5jSoPm4QpB/ Huge thanks to today’s sponsors:Gemmist makes salon-quality hair care products backed by science, giving you personalized shampoo and conditioner recommendations based on your hair data. In the first three episodes in my series on Munchausen syndrome by proxy, I searched for answers about this commonly misunderstood form of child abuse while I discussed multiple cases of children harmed or even killed by mothers who sought attention for themselves and thrived on drama, heedless of the damage they did to their children. During my search, I came out with more questions than answers! For this episode, I welcomed two very special guests to help me answer those questions. Author Andrea Dunlop drew from personal experience with a family member to write her latest novel, We Came Here to Forget, which centers around a woman whose family was torn apart by Munchausen by proxy. Dr. Marc Feldman, who I have quoted multiple times throughout the series, is an international expert in the field of factitious disorders whose credentials are too numerous to list in the show notes! I was honored to have an in-depth, fascinating conversation with both Andrea and Dr. Feldman, who provided their uniquely qualified perspectives and expertise on this baffling topic. Things may get better this year, but that doesn't erase what we've all gone through. In this episode we explore, how do we grieve during this time when so many have lost loved ones, and even more have experienced personal, professional, and emotional loss? And for mothers, is allowing ourselves to feel our feelings an act of political liberation? We talk to indigenous activist Andrea Landry on how to unwind some of our most backward ideas about motherhood that are rooted in colonialism and how we begin to heal, personally and collectively, from the traumas of the last year.   If you’d like to follow Andrea Landry and learn more about her work, go to Instagram @indigenousmotherhood or Twitter,  @andrealandry1.
