In must-win Michigan, Joe Biden is expected to handily win the primary election today. But the numbers — specifically the number of Democrats who vote “undeclared”— could provide some insight into one of the president's weak spots come November. Playbook deputy editor Zack Stanton, freshly returned from a reporting trip in the Wolverine state, offers some insight into the importance of the race, and what the locals are saying about 2024. Playbook co-author Ryan Lizza interviews Playbook deputy editor Zack Stanton.

President Biden came into office with an incredibly slim legislative majority. And yet despite just 50 Democratic seats in the Senate, the first two years of Biden's Presidency saw the passage of some extremely ambitious laws. The potential exists for the infrastructure bill, the CHIPS Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act to reshape the economy in ways that we haven't seen in a long time. Brian Deese has been the head of the National Economic Council these last two years, and was thus directly involved in the passage and shaping of these laws. So what will they accomplish, and how will they ultimately be judged. We spoke to Brian in his final week in the NEC role about this new era of "industrial strategy", and what he learned during this two-year stint.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The 119th Congress is getting into full swing and we're starting to see what the impact of a divided government looks like. GOP hardliners Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar were given committee assignments, despite being tossed off committees last term for incendiary language and ideas. The alleged fabulist George Santos also got a committee assignment, despite growing calls for his resignation. All this as the country moves full steam ahead into a fight over the debt limit, risking a US default that could have disastrous consequences for the American – and global – economy. US President Joe Biden is heading to the US-Mexico border for the first time since he took office, as the country wrestles with a growing number of migrants. It comes just days after he announced an expansion of a public health measure known as Title 42, to block Cuban, Haitian and Nicaraguan migrants from illegally entering the US. That move has put him at odds with his own allies, who argue that approach goes against his campaign promises. Our Washington correspondent Simon Marks spoke to Charlotte Cook.
Some of President Joe Biden's remarks on his 2024 plans, the pandemic, and Taiwan depart from what the White House has said. The Biden administration returns a kidnapped American home in exchange for releasing a Taliban prisoner. The prisoner swap took place in Kabul Afghanistan earlier Monday. Among the last of Congress's priories ahead of the midterms is to change the way electoral votes are tallied. Joe Biden makes his first trip to Asia as U.S. President against a tumultuous backdrop. Among other issues, his administration has been dealing with China's refusal to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine and tensions with Beijing over Taiwan. Then there's the ramping up of missile tests by North Korea even as it locks down major cities in response to its first COVID-19 outbreak—or at least the first one that Pyongyang has admitted to.

Tonight, President Biden will give his first State of the Union address to the American people. It'll be interesting to hear how he spins his record to stay in line with the radical left's narrative. The President will most likely speak in platitudes and intentions because this administration has nothing to brag about. Over the past year, Americans have dealt with inflation, mandates, border security, loss of energy independence, the crisis in Afghanistan, and now the conflict in Russia and Ukraine. And now, conveniently, for the SOTU and during an election year, mask mandates have been dropped. Poof!
If Biden were running a restaurant, the health department would have to shut it down because of all the terrible reviews about food poisoning and a filthy kitchen. This administration is an appalling, unfunny joke- on the economy, inflation, border, national security- you name it, Biden is making it worse. It's almost like the Left is trying to ruin the country, and they figured Mr. Magoo as president would help them get there. On a very different topic, Ukraine is about to get a lot more dangerous and violent, despite valiant resistance to Russia's aggression from the Ukrainian people. We need to be prepared for the sheer ugliness of war to get much worse. Let's hope Buck is wrong, and this conflict ends quickly. Please subscribe to the podcast!
