About 47 percent of registered voters ages 18 to 29 cast ballots in the U.S. presidential election last year. That's less than the overall voting participation of 64 percent, but it shows how young people are playing a bigger role in national elections. At the same time, a recent Harvard Youth Poll found that more than 4 in 10 Americans under age 30 say they're barely getting by financially, and just 15 percent believe the country is headed in the right direction. Fewer than one-third of these young people approve of President Trump or either party in Congress. Here in Rhode Island, organizing by young political activists has waxed and waned over time. So what role can youth groups play in influencing the direction of politics in the state? And what do activists have to say about the dissatisfaction of young people with both major parties? This week on Political Roundtable, I'm going in depth with chairman of the Rhode Island Young Republicans Ken Naylor and board member of the Young Democrats of Rhode Island Autumn Guillotte.

With a new administration about to take office, we're kicking off our second season of B The Way Forward by talking about one of the most powerful tools for change we have access to -- our vote. And digging into why - in the most recent presidential election -less than 40% of young voters showed up, compared to a record-breaking 50% in 2020. GenZ and Millennials make up the largest voting bloc in the country. Re-engaging this slice of the electorate will be crucial for preserving our democracy for years to come. But can the major political parties do it? Or is it up to outside groups to find new ways to rally young voters without relying on the goodwill and political fortune of these institutions? For a perspective on the inside approach, we chat with Paul Jones, President of the Young Democrats of Illinois to see why he thinks young people - traditionally a strong part of the party's base - stayed home and how the party can get them back. Then we talk to Lucille Wenegieme, Executive Director non-partisan voter-advocacy group HeadCount to learn why she thinks that to really get young people engaged, you have to meet them where they are - without the baggage of entrenched political parties. After Oklahoma voters decisively passed State Question 802 in 2020, mandating expansion of Oklahoma's Medicaid coverage to low-income citizens similar to the Affordable Care Act, Governor Kevin Stitt has worked to privatize the joint federal and state run healthcare program. As SoonerCare transitions to SoonerSelect, on April 1, 2024, the program will be operated by three private companies; Aetna Better Health of Oklahoma, Humana Healthy Horizons, and Oklahoma Complete Health. As of March 10th, the Oklahoma Health Care Authority, or OCHA, began auto-assigning members who had not selected their new plans. Shonda Little speaks with Jared Deck, State Representative for House District 44 in Norman and JeKia Harrison, President of the Young Democrats of Oklahoma, and a lifelong resident of northeast Oklahoma City to learn more about this transition and the concerns held by some about this change. In a groundbreaking achievement Traci Manuel, who both attended and taught at Booker T. The hosts discuss growing anger among Georgia members of Congress over the U.S. Postal Service's inability to solve serious delays in mail delivery in metro Atlanta. It's part of a larger national problem. But first, the podcast welcomes former Georgia Republican Congressman Tom Graves, who served in the U.S. House for a decade before retiring in 2020. The hosts ask him for his observations about the infighting among GOP members of the House today and about the extreme partisanship on both sides of the aisle. He also offers his take on Marjorie Taylor Greene, who now represents the same district Graves did. Then, Davante Jennings, chairman of the Young Democrats of Georgia Black Caucus and an organizer at the New Georgia Project, joins the podcast to talk about what's inspired him to become a political activist after he was disillusioned by Donald Trump's victory in 2016. Julia Conley, staff writer for Common Dreams writes, “Along with persistent protests at public events held by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, recent polling is continuously demonstrating that the White House's vehement support for Israel's bombardment of Gaza despite the rising civilian death toll is not winning them accolades among the voters whose backing they depend on in the upcoming election.” Conley cites a recent poll that “50% of 2020 Biden voters believe the Israeli assault that the U.S. has helped fund is a genocide.” Young Democrats in particular are highly critical of the administration's policy dimming Biden's reelection hopes.
As part of a weeklong series of stories, we're marking 50 years of Home Rule in the District. President Richard Nixon signed the Home Rule Act on December 24, 1973 granting D.C and its residents to right to elect its own local government, which they did in November 1974. But Home Rule was and remains limited. For example, D.C. still does not have voting representation in Congress. Historian and co-author of Chocolate City: A History Of Race And Democracy In The Nation's Capital George Derek Musgrove gets behind the mic to discuss the compromises that led to the passage of the Home Rule Act. He will be joined by Arrington Dixon, who was elected to the very first D.C. Council to talk about what it was like to take on this historic responsibility. Then, WAMU's criminal justice reporter Jenny Gathright will discuss how today's political moves to limit D.C.'s autonomy follow an old playbook. Finally, President of the D.C. Young Democrats and co-founder of 51 for 51 Jamal Holtz talks us through the fight for D.C. representation in Congress and what comes next for D.C. self-governance. Could statehood be on the horizon? GaPol_Trump This week on The Georgia Politics Podcast, Megan sits down with Chris Sandbach to discuss what we know and what we don't know about the Trump indictment related to hush money payments to Stormy Daniels. There have, of course, been plenty of news articles and commentary on what implications the indictment of Donald Trump could have for the country writ large and Donald Trump's political future, but we think what is needed is an explainer of exactly what the charges are, what evidence is presented by the Manhattan DA in the indictment, and what we can expect to learn in the next few months. Attorney Chris Sandbach joins Megan (also an attorney) to go over the details. We want our listeners to be informed of the facts to help them formulate their own opinions on the merits of the case against the former President. About Chris Sandbach Chris Sandbach has a bachelor's degree in Political Science with an emphasis on Foreign Policy and Received his J.D. from Atlanta's John Marshall Law School in 2015. After law school, Chris Spent over 6 years working as a public defender in the Atlanta area. In 2022, he took a job with the law firm of Rickard, Drew & Nix and specializes in personal injury litigation and criminal defense. Allison Wiseman, the President of the Kentucky Young Democrats, joined us this week to talk about KYD -- what it does, what role it plays in the Kentucky political ecosystem, and how to create and join chapters. She was great! Before speaking with her, Jazmin and Robert talked about all the legislation that passed in the lead up to the veto period. Most of it was really bad, including potentially the most anti-trans legislation passed anywhere in the country. While most of it was bad news, there were at least a few good parts, such as medical marijuana (and maybe eve sports betting) potentially becoming legal in Kentucky.
On this episode, host Lynda Woolard speaks with Ciara Hart, chair of the Young Democrats of Louisiana (YDL), organizing chair of the Environmental Caucus for the Young Democrats of America (YDA), Democratic State Central Committee member, Lift Louisiana Advisory Board member, and former candidate for the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE). Their conversation focuses on the issues that most concern young voters, the current state of the Louisiana Democratic Party, and the opportunities Young Democrats can bring to both those situations in our state. Find Ciara on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Follow YDL on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Get more information on the Young Democrats of Louisiana at GeauxDems.org. Joining Megan on The Georgia Politics Podcast is attorney and former public defender, Chris Sandbach, to discuss the role of public defenders in our criminal justice system and what the appointment of Kentanji Brown Jackson means for the makeup of the Supreme Court. Public defenders are attorneys who represent people who have been charged with a crime and who cannot afford to pay for private counsel. They face the possibility of time behind bars if convicted. The 6th Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees that if someone cannot afford private counsel, a judge will appoint a public defender to defend them in a court of law, for free. Chris, who spent over 6 years of his professional life as a public defender, talks with Megan about the ways in which our criminal justice system works, where it has room for improvement, and the role public defenders play in both. He also talks about the recently sworn in Justice Kentanji Brown Jackson and what her experience as a public defender brings to the court, for the first time in its existence. About Chris Sandbach Chris Sandbach has a bachelor's degree in Political Science with an emphasis on Foreign Policy and Received his J.D. from Atlanta's John Marshall Law School in 2015.
