Interestingly, the New Testament gives us some good examples of churches who didn't quite "get" grace yet. The Church in Galatia, you could say were “Jesus-plus” people. This is where they say "All you need is Jesus (PLUS these 193 other rules) That's legalism. Not Grace On the other hand, the people of Corinth, you could say, were “Jesus-minus” people. They were like; “All you need is Jesus” (MINUS any real-life transformation or holiness or repentance or the Cross or...") That's called “cheap grace” which is no Grace at all. Lord may we understand that grace is free but came at the ultimate cost.

Grace. It's what I crave most when my own guilt is exposed. Ironically it's also the very thing I'm hesitant to extend when I'm confronted with the guilt of others (especially if I'm hurt or offended in some way) Interestingly, when you read the New Testament, the main thing Jesus stood against consistently was graceless religion. The only group he was consistently indignant with were graceless religious leaders. So, we should not be surprised when we get to the end of the Gospels and discover that the people who crucified him were those who claimed to know God but knew little of grace. Lord may we be grace-givers rather than stone-throwers

If it's the most distinctive idea of the Christian faith... If the word itself appears in the New Testament more times than “forgiveness” or “prayer” (which it does...) If it is true that we are indeed saved by grace and grace alone, meaning our very eternity is resting on this... If this is a core value of our church... Then we need to get it right

It is the one idea among the Christian faith that is most unique among all religions. It's also the most scandalous. It is what attracts people the most, and is often the stumbling block over which they fall. It drew thousands to Jesus, and also nailed him to the cross. Without a doubt, it is the most significant dynamic, power and gift of the Christian faith. So if there is one thing that we need to "get right," it's this. And many don't get it right. Some reject it; some cheapen it; some make it a commodity to be earned; some say it only flows to a few; some refuse it to others; some apply it where it doesn't belong; some... well, you get the point. We hope you join us for this series at Journey!

One of the most dangerous things in the world is when you think you “get” something, but you really don’t. The more important something is, the more disastrous the results if you get it wrong. This is especially true with the gospel. Paul writes his letter to the Colossians because he wants to make sure they get it. In these first few verses he shows us something so central to the gospel that you can’t really get it if you don’t get this: grace.

Today’s passage: Acts 9 Grace is wonderful. God shows us such kindness and love and gentleness. Even though we don’t deserve it, God invites us into a relationship with himself. Having shown us mercy – taking the penalty of our sin onto Himself – God graciously invites us into his family, adopting us by the blood of Jesus through the Spirit of God. I like the idea of grace. I love the fact that there are countless second chances. Every […]
Passages under consideration: Genesis 37-54 This weekend, as we continue our exploration of God’s grace, we’re doing something a little different. Rather than looking at a single passage, we’re looking at a story that covers at least 10 chapters! Our focus today will be on the story of God’s using Joseph, and what that story reveals about the grace of God. To understand Genesis 37ff, we need to understand something of the family history. Joseph is a son of Israel […]
Grace is something that we cannot live without. Grace starts where mercy leaves off. It’s more than our not getting what we deserve. It’s our getting what we don’t deserve. Grace is, ultimately, God giving Himself to us. It’s by grace that we are saved. That is, we are saved not because we deserve to be with God, but simply because God chooses to save us. Grace is a gift. Grace doesn’t dumb down the immensity of sin. Grace isn’t […]
This week’s passage: 1 Peter 2:9-10 This weekend, we’re starting a brand new series focusing on grace. Grace is one of those concepts that we speak about a lot as Christians. But it’s also something that we can find incredibly hard to get a handle on. In some ways, we just don’t get grace; it staggers our understanding! Grace is God’s treating us with undeserved kindness. It’s God giving us what we don’t deserve. Mercy, on the other hand, is […]
