Does John Die at the End? This 2012 mashup of various film and horror genres is as unique as it comes. Based on the novel and web series of the same name, and written by the same author. John and Dave are a couple of young slackers, with seemingly nothing going on in their life. However a chance encounter with a Bob Marley look-a-like sets them off in a tailspin as he knows things about their life no one should know. After ingesting a 'soy sauce' like drug, they realize they have new abilities to see into space, time, and alternate universes in real time. However, there is a curse with this drug as there is an ancient monster lurking in the shadows who seeks to use Dave and John for it's own purposes.Directed by Don Coscarelli, and written by David Wong (Jason Pargin), who also wrote the novel. Notable cast include Chase Williamson as Dave, Rob Mayes as John, Paul Giamatti as Arnie, Fabianne Therese as Amy and Clancy Brown as Dr. Albert Marconi.

would check out cracked.com, largely for the work of David Wong. His essays were hilarious, human, and insightful; he had a rational way of looking at the world that resonated deeply. Fast forward: cracked.com is not the same. The current top story is “29 Inopportune Times People Farted” (okay, the title did make me laugh, but it still suggests a downward slide). On the other hand, Wong – aka author Jason Pargin – has gone on to much success. He has written the John Dies At The End series, the first book of which as famously released for free on his blog (and made into a film by legend Don Coscarelli). Then came the successful Zoey Ashe series. Now he has published a stand-alone novel called I'm Starting To Worry About This Black Box of Doom. It is one of my favourite books of 2024, if not the favourite. And I read about sixty books last year. It was strange to see Jason in horizontal format (I follow him on Tik Tok, what can I say) but a true pleasure to talk to him about this book. Which you should read. Now. Listen in!

Don Coscarelli debuts the Tall Man and his sweet shiny balls only to steal our hearts.

Send us a textEpisode 518"The Fugitive", "Terrifier 3" and "The Munsters"Actor: Daniel Roebuck. The very kind Dan Roebuck joins me to talk his lengthy acting career from Matlock to Rob Zombie and his role in the iconic "The Fugitive". Plus Dan clears the air once and for all as to what happened with his casting in "Home Alone."Having made his feature film debut starring in the teen comedy Cavegirl Daniel Roebuck quickly realized that there was only one direction to travel in his career. Up!Soon after Cavegirl, Roebuck established himself as one of the industry's youngest character actors with his haunting portrayal as the teenage killer, Samson in The River's Edge.Daniel Roebuck was born and raised in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, At the age of 10, he started performing in talent shows doing impressions of movie stars he loved. He joined a local circus two years later and made his debut as one of the youngest clowns in the country. Roebuck's clown act eventually segued into a magic act and he performed that throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. His film credits are myriad, having starred in blockbusters like The Fugitive, US Marshals, and Final Destination, as well as popular titles including Agent Cody Banks and it's sequel, That's What I Am, Money Talks, Flash Of Genius and so many more.Lately, Roebuck has enjoyed working in a number of horror movies - his favorite genre. He has collaborated with filmmaker Rob Zombie on Halloween, Halloween 2, Devil's Rejects, and Lords of Salem (as well as a commercial for AMDRO, the insecticide). He also appeared in Don Coscarelli's cult favorite Bubba Ho Tep as well as the director's Reggie's Tales and John Dies At The End.Daniel has also been a familiar face on television for nearly 3 decades, he was a regular for three seasons on the evergreen hit drama, Matlock, portraying attorney 'Cliff Lewis," the junior partner of the law firm headed by Andy Griffith's beloved character, 'Ben Matlock.' Interestingly, his landing the role was the fulfillment of a promise made several years earlier with his first appearance on "Matlock" in its inaugural season. At that time, Roebuck was told that Griffith had been so impressed with his work that he would be back as a regular on the show. It took five seasons, two more guest shots as different characters, and a change of networks, but Griffith kept his promise and Roebuck indeed became a series regular. As a television guest star, Daniel has played countless characters. Some of his most memorable are a cop who literally turns into a pig on Grimm, a Romulan on Star Trek, Next Generation, a gun toting hostage taker on NYPD Blue, a cranky studio owner on Sonny With A Chance and a grieving father on Glee. He played other memorable roles on New Adventures of Old Christine, NCIS, Ghost Whisperer, CSI, Boston Legal, CSI Miami, Law And Order, Desperate Housewives and Hot in Cleveland. On the popular show, Lost, Roebuck portrayed the infamous Dr. Leslie Arzt, the aggravating science teacher whose explosive exit in the finale of the first season remains one of television's most surprising and talked about moments. He has starred in dozens of TV Movies. Perhaps his most famous turn was his critically acclaimed portrayal of Jay Leno in The Late Shift. In addition to discussing this cult classic's thoughtful presentation of male friendship, our hosts delve into the undeniable presence of Angus Scrimm. Joining the conversation is filmmaker Henry Darrow McComas, who shares how Don Coscarelli's innovation continues to inspire him. Then, writer Brian W. Smith stops by to dig into how he connected to the film's portrayal of family and grief. From flying balls to ice cream man jam sessions, this episode has it all! Go!
The scares continue all through Halloween over here at KYI! The obvious connections to Spielberg and Raimi are noted, as are the film's roots in the Universal Monster tradition. Join us as we celebrate this massive achievement in low-budget filmmaking. Just watch out for the Tall Man, that motha's stronggg! Topics include: actors watching their own work, “nerd-horror”, and the many places to hide flying orbs inside a person.
Don Coscarelli's 1979 surreal, nightmare logic horror fantasy, PHANTASM, is our feature presentation this week. We talk the nightmare genesis of the film, the underlying fear of death at the heart of the film, the jam "Sitting Here At Midnight", the punk rock DIY approach, and much more! Bennett and Jim tackle Don Coscarelli's series premiere, a trip through familiar genre territory The first episode of Masters of Horror reflects the predicament Bennett and Jim find themselves in. Bree Turner stars as a woman who takes an ill-fated trip down the titular pass. She encounters a backwoods murderer whose whole shtick is a touch too familiar. Don Coscarelli directed the first four 'Phantasm' films, 'Bubba Ho-Tep,' and 'John Dies at the End,' among others. With only 20 minutes on the clock, the duo discuss topics that include survivalism, horror comics, and indie rock. Will they find the brevity to power them through to the next episode (Stuart Gordon's Dreams In The Witch House), or will the time constraint prove too challenging to succeed? Our September Showdown went the way of the patrons, which means they got to pick this week's punishment film. Thankfully, they didn't feel like punishing their favorite podcast and had us watch the mashup of Don Coscarelli x Bruce Campbell. Phantasm is a 1979 American science fantasy horror film that was directed, written, photographed, and edited by Don Coscarelli. The first film in the Phantasm franchise, it introduces the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm), a supernatural and malevolent undertaker who turns the dead of Earth into dwarf zombies to be sent to his planet and used as slaves. This fine episode of Death By DVD originally premiered on 4/20/2022Do you know what 4/20 stands for? For a lot of folks it means BLAZE IT! Lets get high! And on 4/20, well, people get high! Boy do they get high. But 4/20 has another special meaning. On 4/20/1999 two young boys murdered 15 of their classmates with deadly weapons, a crime that would briefly shock the nation! On this episode we aren't getting high (yes we are) but we're "shooting" the shit about a movie called DUCK! The Carbine High Massacre which came out a whopping SIX MONTHS after the Columbine High School Massacre! You may want to roll a joint for this episode. You'll need it. LISTEN NOW! The story so far: After getting trapped in a well in the middle of the woods without cell service, the boys stumble on a secret underground bunker labeled "Moleman's Movie Hole" decorated and stocked like an 80s VHS rental store. Later they discover a magic box with a button that, when pressed, kills a random person somewhere in the world but materializes whatever item you're thinking about into the bunker. But now they have to deal with someone peeping into their very private moments! The boys attempt to restore privacy back into their lives, but they are "shocked" by the fact that they are doing a poor job surviving in their current predicament. So they check out 1988's Survival Quest, directed by the legend Don Coscarelli! And then they discuss two new, but incredibly different films, the 2023 found footage film Frogman and the 2024 sci-fi blockbuster Dune: Part 2!Leave us a 30 second voicemail and if we like it we'll play it on the show: (949) 4-STABBY (949-478-2229)Next movie announced every Wednesday. Not at horror franchises are built the same, and Phantasm is pretty hit or miss as a rule, but you really have to hand it to Don Coscarelli for doing what he wants, how he wants, regardless of how absurd Reggie Bannister gets or how much studio meddling he has to deal with to make his movies. PHANTASM III: LORD OF THE DEAD (1993) picks up right where its predecessor leaves off but somehow makes even less sense than the original film. While the plot may be inscrutable and most of the acting atrocious, there's a lot of charm in PHANTASM III as well as a lot of yellow mustard, so you know we had a good time watching and discussing regardless of how much headscratching occurred throughout. A very Tall Man. Deadly, flying silver spheres. A Lady in Lavender. Jawas? Okay, technically not Jawas. Two brothers and their pal, an ice cream man by trade, attempt to unravel the mystery of what is happening to the bodies of the dead at Morningside Cemetery. Of course, snooping around manages to incur the wrath of The Tall Man and his minions, and leads them to discover a portal to some otherworldly locale. It's time for a 45th anniversary celebration of Phantasm (1979)!
On today's episode, we're heading over to Morningside Cemetery and running for our lives away from some freaky silver killer balls, while we revisit the horror classic that is Phantasm (1979), as this film celebrates its 45th anniversary. Award winning Director (Tim Travers & the Time Traveler's Paradox), writer, producer, actor, illustrator, PNW person, and ten-year veteran of the indie scene, Stimson Snead (Mr. Snead appears courtesy of Skyline Wine) prepares for inevitable bed sores as we tuck in for his choice "Bubba Ho-Tep" (2003 ((wide)) Dir. Don Coscarelli) Starring: Bruce Campbell, and Ossie Davis. You should be sold by the title of this movie alone, but if on top of that, the plot didn't sell you (I weep), we go DEEP into the annals of the past, present, and future, to uncover the secrets of this not often seen horror/comedy. We spend time examining the social impact and nuance of "The Minions," franchise. We take a look at the incredible Bruce Campbell oeuvre. And we make a case for "Dorff Lundgren" as Elvis, based on his look as the original Frank Castle for the screen alone.Plot: When residents of their nursing home start dying of dubious causes, an aged Elvis and an African-American senior who claims to be President John F. Kennedy discover that the perpetrator is an Egyptian mummy with murderous intentions.Recorded 2/241hr 59mins**All episodes contain explicit language**Artwork - Ben McFaddenReview Review Intro/Outro Theme - Jamie Henwood"What Are We Watching" Theme - Matthew FosketLead-Ins Edited/Conceptualized by - Ben McFaddenProduced by - Ben McFadden & Paul RootConcept - Paul Root
