Rise and Shine (1941) / Jim the World's Greatest (1976) This week we're grinding it out on the goal line as we try to make the grade in Alan Dwan's collegiate comedy and go beyond the gridiron in Don Coscarelli and Craig Mitchell's teenage melodrama

Bring Me The Axe! Horror Podcast

This week we go back to 1979 for a look at Don Coscarelli's dreamy, stream-of-consciousness horror movie that introduced the world to The Tall Man, Reggie The Ice Cream Man, and the mirror-plated Sentinel Spheres. It's Phantasm! Is this a horror movie? Well, yeah. Of course it is. But is there more going on here than meets the eye? Also yes. Though the movie is a bit of a mess and an exercise in that moment when a struggling young filmmaker decides to take the easy to road to success through cheap thrills it also hides a deeper dimension about loss, grief, and a boy entering adolescence, a time when the world suddenly becomes simultaneously more exciting but also more dangerous. In this wild adventure, young Mike and his brother Jody find themselves in the crosshairs of a sinister entity masquerading as a mortician at a nearby funeral home when they stumble upon his terrible secret: The Tall Man is not of this world and is stealing the dead to resurrect them as little dwarf slaves for reasons? Aided by their guitar-playin' ice cream selling buddy, Reggie, they take the fight to the funeral home to stop what could be a full-blown invasion of Earth by an army of the dead, aided by their terrifying flying death machines, the Sentinel Spheres!Join the Bring Me The Axe Discord: https://discord.gg/snkxuxzJSupport Bring Me The Axe! on Patreon:https://patreon.com/bringmetheaxepodBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/

On night 6 of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing PHANTASM (1979), from writer/director Don Coscarelli. Following the death of his parents, friend and the fear of his older brother Jody leaving him, young Mike Pearson (A. Michael Baldwin) becomes suspicious of the town's sinister mortician, known as the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm). Mike sneaks into the eerie Morningside Mortuary and discovers the Tall Man is converting the dead into murderous, shrunken dwarf minions and using flying silver spheres to harvest their brains for an otherworldly dimension. Along with Jody (Bill Thornbury) and their friend Reggie (Reggie Bannister), Mike confronts the Tall Man to stop his macabre operation, leading to a confusing and terrifying battle where reality and nightmare dangerously blur. The film clocks in at 1 h and 29 m, is rated R. We caught the film on the Hoopla app but it is streaming on Prime Video, Peacock, Plex, Pluto TV, Roku Channel, Tubi and to buy/rent on Prime Video. We're sticking with the work of Don Coscarelli, and going back to the classic that made his name; “Phantasm”. A film in which Angus Scrimm shows that, despite being older, he can still shoot his balls round corners; we learn how to make some of the most dangerous improvised explosives outside of the Anarchist's Cookbook; and we meet a Jawa with a porn-moustache. Coscarelli's third feature film, made independently over 2 years with a cast and crew of mostly friends and family, would go on to be a staple of the horror section in video shops for the next decade, with its striking poster image (entirely unrelated to anything in the actual film) burned into the minds of a generation. Unlike a lot of its VHS counterparts; “Phantasm” is an utterly unique beast; a horror/sci fi hybrid with surreal set pieces and a mythology that obfuscates the more it reveals; coupled to a domestic coming-of-age story of two orphaned brothers (and their singing Ice Cream Man buddy). It would follow the route of successful 80s horrors in spawning a franchise, but this too would be unlike any others, with (mostly) the same cast returning each time, the story being picked up pretty much from where the last film left off, and lore explorations that again only deepen the mystery. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers and join us.

This week, we're discussing Don Coscarelli's “Bubba Ho-Tep”, and usually at this point, we would write a few amusing sentences about the film. But nothing we can come up with beats this premise: Elvis Presley didn't die and is now stuck in an Old People's Home in Texas. He teams up with a fellow resident (a black man who claims to be a post-assassination JFK) to fight a soul-sucking Mummy in Cowboy boots. Seen and loved by many at the time of release, now 23 years later, “Bubba Ho-Tep” seems, sadly, overlooked. Despite its horror royalty combination of “Phantasm” creator Coscarelli behind the camera, and a magnificent portrayal of a bitter and forgotten Elvis/delusional Elvis impersonator by Bruce Campbell (in possibly his best role outside of “The Evil Dead”'s Ash), it just doesn't seem to get mentioned much anymore. Which is a shame; Campbell's marvellous double act with the impeccable Ossie Davis as JFK give this mondo idea some real humour and heart. Despite the madcap premise, the film is also a reflection on the regrets, sadness and indignities of old age, with Elvis mourning his lost potential, and his body's decline (in a scatalogically graphic narration). Like its protagonists, this film shouldn't be forgotten as it ages, but allowed its time to shine forever. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers and join us.

After ingesting a 'soy sauce' like drug, they realize they have new abilities to see into space, time, and alternate universes in real time. However, there is a curse with this drug as there is an ancient monster lurking in the shadows who seeks to use Dave and John for it's own purposes.Directed by Don Coscarelli, and written by David Wong (Jason Pargin), who also wrote the novel.

Send us a textEpisode 518"The Fugitive", "Terrifier 3" and "The Munsters"Actor: Daniel Roebuck. The very kind Dan Roebuck joins me to talk his lengthy acting career from Matlock to Rob Zombie and his role in the iconic "The Fugitive". Plus Dan clears the air once and for all as to what happened with his casting in "Home Alone."Having made his feature film debut starring in the teen comedy Cavegirl Daniel Roebuck quickly realized that there was only one direction to travel in his career. Up!Soon after Cavegirl, Roebuck established himself as one of the industry's youngest character actors with his haunting portrayal as the teenage killer, Samson in The River's Edge.Daniel Roebuck was born and raised in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, At the age of 10, he started performing in talent shows doing impressions of movie stars he loved. He joined a local circus two years later and made his debut as one of the youngest clowns in the country. Roebuck's clown act eventually segued into a magic act and he performed that throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. His film credits are myriad, having starred in blockbusters like The Fugitive, US Marshals, and Final Destination, as well as popular titles including Agent Cody Banks and it's sequel, That's What I Am, Money Talks, Flash Of Genius and so many more.Lately, Roebuck has enjoyed working in a number of horror movies - his favorite genre. He has collaborated with filmmaker Rob Zombie on Halloween, Halloween 2, Devil's Rejects, and Lords of Salem (as well as a commercial for AMDRO, the insecticide). He also appeared in Don Coscarelli's cult favorite Bubba Ho Tep as well as the director's Reggie's Tales and John Dies At The End.Daniel has also been a familiar face on television for nearly 3 decades, he was a regular for three seasons on the evergreen hit drama, Matlock, portraying attorney 'Cliff Lewis," the junior partner of the law firm headed by Andy Griffith's beloved character, 'Ben Matlock.' Interestingly, his landing the role was the fulfillment of a promise made several years earlier with his first appearance on "Matlock" in its inaugural season. At that time, Roebuck was told that Griffith had been so impressed with his work that he would be back as a regular on the show. It took five seasons, two more guest shots as different characters, and a change of networks, but Griffith kept his promise and Roebuck indeed became a series regular. As a television guest star, Daniel has played countless characters. Some of his most memorable are a cop who literally turns into a pig on Grimm, a Romulan on Star Trek, Next Generation, a gun toting hostage taker on NYPD Blue, a cranky studio owner on Sonny With A Chance and a grieving father on Glee. He played other memorable roles on New Adventures of Old Christine, NCIS, Ghost Whisperer, CSI, Boston Legal, CSI Miami, Law And Order, Desperate Housewives and Hot in Cleveland. On the popular show, Lost, Roebuck portrayed the infamous Dr. Leslie Arzt, the aggravating science teacher whose explosive exit in the finale of the first season remains one of television's most surprising and talked about moments. He has starred in dozens of TV Movies. Perhaps his most famous turn was his critically acclaimed portrayal of Jay Leno in The Late Shift. Welcome, Daniel Roebuckwww.mmcpodcast.com#thefugitive #robzombie #horror #homealone #homealone2 #homealone #christmasmovies #themunsters Reach out to Darek Thomas and Monday Morning Critic!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mondaymorningcritic/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mondaymorningcritic/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mondaymorningcriticMondaymorningcritic@gmail.com

Don Coscarelli directed the first four 'Phantasm' films, 'Bubba Ho-Tep,' and 'John Dies at the End,' among others. Boy do they get high. But 4/20 has another special meaning. On 4/20/1999 two young boys murdered 15 of their classmates with deadly weapons, a crime that would briefly shock the nation! Not at horror franchises are built the same, and Phantasm is pretty hit or miss as a rule, but you really have to hand it to Don Coscarelli for doing what he wants, how he wants, regardless of how absurd Reggie Bannister gets or how much studio meddling he has to deal with to make his movies. PHANTASM III: LORD OF THE DEAD (1993) picks up right where its predecessor leaves off but somehow makes even less sense than the original film. While the plot may be inscrutable and most of the acting atrocious, there's a lot of charm in PHANTASM III as well as a lot of yellow mustard, so you know we had a good time watching and discussing regardless of how much headscratching occurred throughout.
