1976's KENNY AND COMPANY, written, directed, produced, shot and edited by Don Coscarelli tells the story of young Kenny as he comes of age in 70s southern California, fighting bullies, having his first crush, and dressing up as a horrific bear-pig hybrid for Halloween. And he skateboards! Kevin and Mike are joined by pop culture writer Chris Cummins (who also hosts the great Twitch show Sci-Fi Explosion) to discuss the film, crazy stories from their own unsupervised childhoods, bullies in Woonsocket, RI vs. Philadelphia, Kevin's algebra teacher calling his parents to tell them that Kevin was a Satanist for playing Dungeons & Dragons, "the cool teacher", and the time Kevin almost got Mike fired from his janitorial job at the weird Catholic high school that Kevin attended. A digressive, meandering episode to discuss a digressive, meandering movie!

It's October. So naturally, or should I say supernaturally? No, naturally's probably right. The point is that naturally, because it's October, I invited Jim Knipfel on the pod to talk scary movies. Jim has long been a champion of_ Halloween III: Season of the Witch, the misfit outcast entry in the Halloween film series that's about druids, killer masks and Irish robots instead of Michael Myers. And he's right to champion it. _Halloween III is a great, fun, weird movie despite its reputation. And Phantasm is weird and odd and terrific too. Jim blew my mind clean off a couple times with background info about these two cult masterpieces, particularly with respect to Angus Scrimm's non Phantasm career. Also, I blunder into a wild moment of amateurish ignorance by revealing I didn't know Michael Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" was the theme from The Exorcist. I only watched The Exorcist once and I forgot the soundtrack. "Tubular Bells" is a sample in a DJ Shadow song and I never connected it to The Exorcist. Let me know if I have to turn in my gun and badge. Jim's defense of Halloween III is here (https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/halloween-iii-season-of-the-witch-deserves-another-look/). Subscribe to Jim's Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/jimknipfel/posts). it's terrific.

When you need to mix up the themes and tones of your movies for spooky month, Don Coscarelli is a great auteur to turn to. Cool Movies Darth's introduction to this director was the nightmare fuel that is the "Phantasm". Kodiak Thompson's comes from the comedic craziness that is "John Dies at the End". Who can resist Bruce Campbell as an elderly Elvis Presley in "Bubba Ho-Tep"? If horror is not your bag, Doscarelli will still draw you in with one of his films.

On this episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast we are TCB on some redneck, soul-suckin', sh*tter-house wall-defacing mummy sombitch! That's right - we take a look at the 2002 Don Coscarelli film "Bubba Ho-Tep" staring Bruce Campbell and Ossie Davis (seriously). When an elderly Elvis Presely (not dead, but living out the last few years of his life in a rural Texas retirement home after a botched lifestyle swap with an impersonator) notices some evil "scuttlin'" around the retirement home and the suspicious deaths of a number of residents, he teams up with John F. Kennedy (also not dead but the victim of a conspiracy where he his brain was swapped with a bag of sand. Oh and he's been dyed black) to stop an evil mummy dressed as a cowboy who has been feeding off of the residents' souls. Through their anuses. We aren't kidding. Campbell's Elvis and Davis' Kennedy MUST be seen to believed. Check out the film and then join us for the discussion on the Video Junkyard Podcast!

Jason Pargin aka David Wong began blogging his stories in the 90s and then made his stories, now enough to creat a book, via cafepress for fans who wanted physical copies. After years of working temp office jobs and writing on the side, he got an email from Don Coscarelli who had recently found a copy of his book. After ignoring the email thinking it was a scam, he sold the rights and John Dies At The End was created. Three weeks later he got an offer to write for Cracked. With a journalism degree, no connections, no pitching, no book deal, just 13 years of writing online. Then a publishing company contacted him to print the hard cover of John Dies At the End. By the time the film was complete, he was done with his second book, The Book is Full of Spiders which made the New York Times Best Seller List, while working at Cracked. He worked at Cracked for 13 years but wrote part time online, all told, for 22 years. Jason explain what Cracked was for those who don't know, how it was resurrected and transformed with him and two other people to a staff of over 40, to how it ended for him. And what ultimately happened to Cracked? Why he wrote under the pseudonym, David Wong, for so many years? And how he came up with the name? How social media has changed writing for the worst? But why it's a necessary evil to even be considered for a deal. Why he is thankful for success later, rather than in his 20s? Part 2 is coming up next!! Find all things related to him at https://johndiesattheend.com Plus his newest book releasing soon, at the time of this podcast 10/2022, If This Book Exists, You're in the Wrong Universe. Possibly the quintessential British movie, join THE Linus Fitness-Centre & Harry-Scott as they pour a shot of lighter fluid and get into the politics of WITHNAIL & I. Two out-of-work actors -- the anxious, luckless Marwood (Paul McGann) and his acerbic, alcoholic friend, Withnail (Richard E. Grant) -- spend their days drifting between their squalid flat, the unemployment office and the pub. When they take a holiday "by mistake" at the country house of Withnail's flamboyantly gay uncle, Monty (Richard Griffiths), they encounter the unpleasant side of the English countryside: tedium, terrifying locals and torrential rain. This is an episode you DON'T wanna miss! This week's very special episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show focuses on Baz Luhrmann's new movie Elvis and the life, music, legend, meaning, and enduring importance of “The King” Elvis Presley. “Champion” Joe Lansdale is the award-winning author of more than 50 novels including the amazing Hap and Leonard series. His Bram Stoker Award-nominated novella, Bubba Ho-Tep, was made into a movie of the same name by Don Coscarelli and featured Bruce Campbell and Ossie Davis. Joe Lansdale shares what it was like experiencing the Elvis cultural phenomenon as a young man; the power of black music and Presley's relationship to it; youth culture and sex; and Luhrmann's new movie as a work of art and a type of true lie. Joe Lansdale also shares a powerful memory about exactly where he was and what he was doing the moment he found out that Elvis Presley had died. And Joe Lansdale reflects on getting to know Michael Kenneth Williams, shares some thoughts about his beloved cult classic film Bubba Ho-Tep, and of course updates folks on the future of Hap and Leonard. Michael Bertrand is the second guest on this week's installment of The Chauncey DeVega Show. He is a professor of history at Tennessee State University and the author of the book Race, Rock, and Elvis. Bertrand separates fact from fiction about Elvis Presley's relationship to black music and the color line; the complex dynamics of race and class in Presley's life, career, and cultural meaning; and why we are still talking about The King almost five decades after his death. Chauncey DeVega goes to the movies and reviews The Black Phone, Mr. Malcolm's List, Crimes of the Future, Brian and Charles, The Phantom of the Open, and Top Gun: Maverick. And Chauncey is overwhelmed with emotion while watching G.I. Joe: The Movie 35th Anniversary. WHERE CAN YOU FIND ME?
