Corporate leaders encounter significant challenges when addressing public debates on contentious topics. They must strike a balance between the pressures to speak out or remain silent while navigating the polarized nature of today's discourse and the powerful, diverse interests of shareholders, employees, consumers, and civil society groups. Join the Robert Zicklin Center for a talk featuring Lawrence Cunningham, Director of the Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance at the University of Delaware. Mr. Cunningham will argue that corporate leaders should adopt a pragmatic approach rather than adhering to a fixed or ideological stance on whether to take public positions. He will emphasize evaluating the specific context and circumstances of each situation. By drawing on the history and law of corporate governance, as well as practical experience, Cunningham will demonstrate that the best strategy for each board and CEO will vary based on the unique characteristics of their corporation, its leadership, its shareholder base, its workforce, the markets it serves, and how these factors interact with public debates.

Joy is a foremost expert on elder abuse and developing evidence-based screening protocols in long term care. Learn about her role spearheading spiritual engagement, and why connecting to something bigger is critical for happiness and well-being. About Joy Joy is the Vice President of Elder Justice and Spiritual Engagement at RiverSpring Living, and Director and Managing Attorney of The Weinberg Center for Elder Justice at the Hebrew Home at Riverdale. Joy co-founded The Weinberg Center in 2004. She was previously Director of Elder Abuse Services at the Pace Women's Justice Center and an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan, where she served for eight years. Joy is a frequent speaker and writer on the issue of elder abuse and elder justice, including to the United States Senate, Special Commission on Aging. Screening for elder abuse detection in health care and legal systems has been a priority for Joy. In addition to developing evidence-based screening protocols in long-term care, Weinberg Center Risk and Abuse Prevention Screen (WC-RAPS), she recently co-authored and published two research papers relating to evidence-based screening for elder abuse. Joy's work in long-term care also includes an active role in the creation of sexual expression policies for residents, a resilience/well-being program for caregivers, and a fresh look at death and dying in long-term care. Joy also developed a unique domestic violence prevention and intervention program for all employees of the Hebrew Home at Riverdale. Like the Weinberg Center itself and many of its innovative projects, this program is easily replicable. Joy was a founder of the Elder Abuse Committee on the Elder Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. In 2017, Joy was awarded the National Crime Victims Service Award by the United States Department of Justice. In 2016, she was recognized with an award of Distinction in Public Service by the New York Law Journal, and in 2010 she received The New York State Bar Association award for Excellence in Public Service. Joy is also a certified ISHTA yoga instructor and teacher of breathing and meditation. Key Takeaways One out of ten older adults experience abuse in their lifetime. Most of the perpetrators are family members. Financial exploitation is the most prevalent form of abuse. Elder abuse shelters work well in long-term care communities because they are built around the needs of older people. At River Spring Living the shelter is “virtual” and integrated into the community at large. The SPRiNG Alliance, a network of regional elder abuse shelters, does extensive outreach and training to help communities start shelters. It is important to have conversations about end-of-life and long-term planning. As a culture we are too scared to talk about death and the dying process. Older people need to express themselves spiritually and connect to something bigger than themselves. It is a critical component of happiness and well-being. Part of spiritual engagement is getting out in nature.

Hear how Hebrew Home at Riverdale's visionary programs are being replicated across the country. About Daniel Daniel Reingold, M.S., J.D. is President and Chief Executive Officer of RiverSpring Living, a leading non-profit senior care organization with a century of history and leadership, which includes the operation of the renowned Hebrew Home at Riverdale. Under his tenure, the non-profit has grown significantly, generated by the development of innovative and much-needed care solutions for older adults—including managed long-term care, assisted living, senior housing, and rehabilitation services. As a passionate advocate for older adults, Reingold and his team opened the Weinberg Center for Elder Abuse Prevention, the nation's first elder abuse shelter, in 2005. Reingold's vision also includes the development of intergenerational initiatives. Project HOPE (Healthcare Offers Permanent Employment) is a unique program that provides students with the opportunity to complete their education while developing job skills. Students spend a large portion of each day at work sites around the Hebrew Home, trained by staff and building connections with Hebrew Home residents. Reingold has become a highly visible presence on the national level, having testified before the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging and attending the 2015 White House Conference on Aging. Key Takeaways Older adults do not want to be segregated by age. RiverSpring Living set up a high school for learning disabled students in the nursing home, and developed a strong relationship with Mount Saint Vincent, a small parochial liberal arts college. They are also exploring the possibility of graduate students and residents living together. Hebrew House at Riverdale's Derfner Judaica Museum + The Art Collectionhas more than 5,000 museum-quality pieces. The museum and art center have had a profound impact on residents and staff. To put the U.S. elder abuse crisis in perspective, there are 1.6 million people living in nursing homes, and more than two million people living at home who are victims of abuse every year.

In this episode, Attorney Deirdre Lok from The Weinberg Center for Elder Justice in New York City, discusses a topic that many of us really don't want to talk about- elder abuse. The abuse of older people. It sounds unfathomable and cruel, doesn't it? Unfortunately, it is all too real. Any person, under certain circumstances, can fall prey to elder abuse.  It comes in quite a few forms and no two cases ever look the same. The biggest culprit in elder abuse is…isolation. This is common for older people as their family and social circles becomes smaller as they age.  Hence…the title of the episode, eyes and ears everywhere are needed. One in ten Americans over the age of sixty have experienced a form of elder abuse. The highest estimate is around five million people. Even so, the total numbers of elder abuse cases are underreported. Some statistics put the number of cases reported at one out of twenty-four. The most common is financial abuse  but...it usually comes with other types. Abuse is never in isolation.  If you don't understand elder abuse, want to learn or, perhaps, are interested in working with older people,  Deirdre and Host Veronica Escobar, have a “soup to nuts” discussion about it all. What is elder abuse? Who is affected by it?  How does the justice system aid victims? What can they do better? How did the Weinberg Center come into existence and how do they help those who need it most? What kind of people does The Weinberg Center help? Can this model be replicated elsewhere?  What can the public do to help?   Working with older people brings challenges but it is also yields tremendous personal (and professional) rewards. Work should have meaning and this work certainly does as well as impact.  The abuse of our aging population is everyone's business. We should all look out for one another, "Today for you and tomorrow for me." Intro.(1:37) - Start of interview(2:19) - Jon's "origin story." He started as a sports journalist, later became press secretary to then NYC Comptroller Jay Goldin. His transition to asset management, founding his firm Sinclair Capital and leading the Investor Responsibility Research Center Institute (IRRCi) (succeeded by the Weinberg Center) focused on ESG and capital market issues.(4:48) - His experience with the NYC pension funds, CII and how he addresses the different "stages of governance" described in his book "Moving Beyond Modern Portfolio Theory: Investing That Matters." His historical perspective on corporate governance from the Dutch East India Company (1602). HBS Professors Myles Mace: "Boards are ornaments on a corporate Christmas tree" and Peter Drucker: "The one thing that all boards have in common is that they do not work." His experience with Creditors Committee at WorldCom. Corporate governance in the 1980s changed for two reasons:In a capitalist society whoever has capital, has power. By the 1980s, institutional investors became very influential with more assets under management. This was prompted in part by the greenmail scandals. In one year (1983-1984) this practice extracted $4bn from US corporationsThat prompted the formation of the Council of Institutional Investors (1985).(13:04) -  The disagreement is not over corporate governance, but rather over "optimal" corporate governance. This is so because capital is changing. "75%-94% of your returns is due to the systematic nature of the markets." The problem with MPT.(17:41) - The concept of "Beta Activism"(19:54) - The focus of his book "Moving Beyond MPT": "This is not a modest book: we are trying to redefine what investing is." Elon Musk is under fire from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) yet again for his "reckless" use of Twitter regarding Tesla company updates. The SEC is currently questioning tweets the chief executive of Tesla sent out last month about the car company’s production levels. Musk says his tweets are covered by free speech. The SEC disagrees and wants him held in contempt for violating a 2018 settlement that restricts his social media posts regarding his company. In 2018 Musk got into trouble for falsely tweeting that he was taking his company private, which caused stocks to soar. This lead to the SEC settlement in which Tesla and Musk were each fined $20 million and he had to step down as chairman of the board. Host Dan Loney talks with John Paul MacDuffie, Management Professor at the Wharton School and Director of the Program on Vehicle and Mobility Innovation at The Mack Institute for Innovation Management, and Charles Elson, Director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance at the University of Delaware, to discuss more about this recent legal turmoil and how it is affecting Tesla in the eye of the consumers on Knowledge@Wharton. Host Colin McGuire and News-Post reporter Kate Masters sat down with Barbara Hiller, the marketing manager for the Weinberg, to discuss the year’s lineup and some of the shows she’s looking forward to the most. Some were expected (Maria Bamford, for instance) and some, like the Portland Cello Project, were not. But they’re all very different from Hiller’s former career as the director of marketing for the Mid-Maryland Musculoskeletal Institute. Hiller also had some great responses to some very silly questions, including the three people, living or dead, she’d most like to have dinner with. Two of her responses — Eleanor Roosevelt and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson — would make for some pretty interesting conversation.
