A dynamic new edition of Roqe focused on language, and the particular proposition: “Does having an accent make life harder?” Jian is joined by professor, author and President of the Linguistics Association of Canada, Dr. Jila Ghomeshi, for a vibrant conversation about accents (with some sibling teasing interlaced!). Jila, with over two decades of experience in the field of Iranian linguistics, discusses how the way we speak can affect the way we are seen, plus the intricacies of accents, the complexities of language, and the effects both can have on personal and professional lives. Plus, Pegah and Jian read through some of the many comments on this topic from the Roqe audience, and discuss the latest news from inside and outside Iran.
Since listeners expressed an interest in hearing about this, I revisit the sexual harassment and abuse accusations made against against former Willow Creek pastor Bill Hybels. In contrast to those many against many others, which were heavily substantiated, very little evidence was publicly presented demonstrating that the accusations were true. This is not to say that Hybels is innocent, merely that that the case against him that's been presented is not especially strong. I also examine the case of Canadian radio personality Jian Ghomeshi, who was also credibly accused of sexual misconduct by multiple credible accusers and was event put on trial for it. Ghomeshi was exonerated when he produced evidence showing that this accusers lied. 2020 is definitely #cancelled, but who can cancel who, and where does boycotting end and cancelling start? Pippa and Karina data-mine Twitter, sort through the endless op-eds, and debate the catharsis and consequences of call-out culture. Online and IRL, cashing in on the thriving "attention economy" has never been so easy-or so fraught. Remember the Jian Ghomeshi trial? In late 2014, a number of women came forward with allegations of abuse against the CBC radio host. The CBC fired Ghomeshi, he was charged with criminal offences, and in 2016, he was tried before the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto. The Jian Ghomeshi trial involved fame, intrigue, surprise . . . and an infamous teddy bear. It captivated Canada and galvanized a national conversation about sexual assault in Canada. Yet when all was said and done, Ghomeshi walked free. In this two-part series, Mindy Caterina & Garrett Jamieson take a look at how and why the trial unfolded the way it did. Part 1 covers:Jian Ghomeshi - who he is and who he was when the allegations came outThe Timeline - how the Ghomeshi allegations fit in with the timeline of the #metoo movementThe Offences - the criminal offences of sexual assault and overcome resistance to chokingThe Trial - a review of the evidence of the first witness who testified at the Jian Ghomeshi trialUseful Links:Global News Timeline of the Jian Ghomeshi Sex Assault ScandalLate October 2014: 8 women accuse Jian Ghomeshi of abusive behaviourThe Trial Decision: R v Ghomeshi, 2016 ONCJ 155CBC article "Jian Ghomeshi ruling should be appealed, lawyer says"(Note: the above CBC article describes a lawyer's opinion that the trial judge erred in finding that Ghomeshi did not drive a yellow Volkswagen Beetle at the time of his alleged assault of L.R. However, according to this article, it was an "agreed fact" that Ghomeshi did not lease a Volkswagen Beetle until 7 months after the events L.R. described. In criminal trials, "agreed facts" are facts that both sides accept as being true and that the trial judge is therefore entitled to rely on.)Episode website: https://lawlawlandshow.com/episode-7-me-q-unpacking-the-jian-ghomeshi-trial-part-1-of-2
