Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

Over its 50+ years Saturday Night Live has had many star making (and breaking) moments, including the coveted role of anchor on the show's Weekend Update news report. But when Seth Meyers departed that role for his own late night gig, who could have guessed that his successor would become the longest running anchor in show history. Colin Jost was born for the role, editing his high school newspaper, then becoming a cub reporter, then sending in a writing packet to SNL and getting hired in 2005. From there he became head writer, then he stepped into the Weekend Update slot which he (and long-time co-anchor Michael Che) have made must watch material. What will he do for an encore -- marry Scarlett Johansen? As always, find extended clips below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more Colin Jost? The twice-yearly SNL joke swap has become a fun fixture of the show. In it, Jost and co-anchor Michael Che write jokes for each other that they must read live on air for the first time. Needless to say the results are gleefully inappropriate. https://youtu.be/-1uC5tBGlNg?si=rUKdClWZPf8JnQyy Colin's standup covers a broader range than Weekend Update, as in this bit from the Just for Laughs Festival. https://youtu.be/yPSFJwORLH0?si=8XsmAPKM7qdvATsn Most recently Colin has scored a major sketch role with his amped up portrayal of War Secretary Pete Hegseth. https://youtu.be/vZb1WO1_lGI?si=t0gKHXoxaP88w32b

On this episode of Black and Snerdy, Ode (@thatsod.e / @thatsod_e) and Mo "Kid" Licorish (@licorishislegit) break down the Netflix roast of Kevin Hart, diving into standout appearances from Usher, Pete Davidson, Chelsea Handler, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, while unpacking why the lineup of comedians—including Shane Gillis, Jeff Ross, and Tony Hinchcliffe—sparked deeper conversations about race, comedy, and who gets to say what on stage. They question the lack of Black stand-up representation compared to figures like Katt Williams and Sheryl Underwood, react to Michael Che's viral take on how different communities approach roasting, and dissect why certain jokes—especially the George Floyd reference—landed as tone-deaf instead of funny. They then shift into a detailed review of Drake's Iceman album, comparing it to his earlier work and debating whether the project shows growth or creative stagnation. The discussion touches on Kendrick Lamar's lingering presence in Drake's lyrics, critiques of repetitive songwriting, and the broader issue of bloated album releases, with comparisons to The Mandalorian's decline and a “Temu album” critique that perfectly captures the project's inconsistency. Along the way, they also analyze Drake's use of Michael Jackson imagery in the album rollout and question whether the execution matches the ambition behind it.

Y'all had a LOT to say about last week's episode. So much that we had to open with the receipts.Ryan is still standing by his take. The comment section is still unhinged. And somehow in the middle of all of that, we ended up talking about a Dominican village where one in every 90 children is born appearing female… and grows a penis at puberty. Make it make sense. This week we got into all of it — fake doctors, Kevin Hart's worst decision, Drake dropping three albums (why), Chris Brown getting a 1.3 from Pitchfork, and a biology lesson none of us were ready for. It's a lot. Let's go.⸻Segment BreakdownAm I the Asshole? — The Response EpisodeThe internet came for Ryan's neck over last week's AITA take, and he isBuddenacking down. Not even a little. Joyhdae is somewhere in the middle, which is somehow worse.Dr. Cheyenne Bryant — “A License Is Only for Insurance”She called herself a doctor for years. Appeared on Breakfast Club, Joe Budden, Shannon Sharpe. Then a DC journalist asked the simple questions and the whole thing unraveled. We get into the credentials controversy, what Argosy University actually was, and why Black women with real degrees were absolutely not letting this slide. The Kevin Hart Netflix RoastA George Floyd joke. Shane Gillis headlining. Kevin Hart laughing. Joyhdae has had enough of Kevin Hart and she has reasons. Ryan is leaning her way. Michael Che's post-roast commentary was the most incisive thing anyone said about the whole situation, and he wasn't even there.Chris Brown's Album Got a 1.3 — Pitchfork Said “Real Piece of Sh*t”27 tracks. A Pitchfork review that went nuclear. And Breezy clapping back with “we kicking ass goddammit.” Joyhdae has never actually listened to a Chris Brown album since the first one, and stands firm.Drake Dropped Three AlbumsIceman, Habibti, and Maid of Honor — allegedly to exit his deal and sell his catalog. Ryan listened to all three. The verdict is… it's Drake. Joyhdae continues her lifelong streak of not listening to a full Drake album. Kendrick still lives in his head. The Guevedoces — Penis at 12In a village in the Dominican Republic, one in 90 children is born appearing female and grows male genitalia at puberty due to a rare enzyme deficiency. The community calls them guevedoces. The research from this village literally led to the creation of finasteride. Joyhdae brought this to the table and Ryan's response was to immediately figure out how far away he could move. The gender conversation this opened up? Send a textA $200 room. Sixty seats. One comedian who refuses to wait for permission. We sit down with Nick Moore to unpack how a DIY special can punch above its weight when the writing is tight, the venue fits your voice, and the hustle has roots in barbershops and trunk sales rather than budgets with too many zeros.Nick takes us from Little Rock to Memphis, where silence taught sharper timing, and into Portland, where a small theater turned into a perfect canvas for Stay Black and Dad. He explains why nine years on stage distilled into three or four years of focused material, how the “funeral bit” graduated from closer to opener, and why rewriting old notebook lines can turn a dusty premise into a clean kill. We dig into influences ranging from Dave Chappelle and Ali Siddiq to Michael Che and Red Foxx, not for name-dropping, but to show the throughline: calm control, patient pacing, and jokes that carry their own weight. We also get candid about money, festivals, and tape. Not everyone has $150K for a special, and most don't need it. A modest room with hot energy records better than a cavern, and festival weekends can cover cameras and audio if you ask the right way. Nick's barbershop-era DVD run proves physical media still builds community, while a brush with America's Got Talent reveals the ruthless clarity of a 90-second set. Through it all, the theme holds: write like every bit could close, choose rooms that serve your rhythm, and publish even when a giant drops the same week. Craft over clout, presence over noise, and laughs that travel farther than your budget. If this conversation fires you up, hit follow, share it with a comic who needs a nudge, and leave a quick review telling us your favorite DIY tactic for getting from open mic to special.Support the show

Nick begins a series of shows devoted to Vanessa Bayer, one of the most consistently funny cast members Saturday Night Live ever had. He talks a bit about her real-life story, including surviving cancer as a kid, and how that strength and optimism seemed to carry into her work on the show. He spends this hour revisiting Laura Parsons, the relentlessly upbeat child performer who somehow finds pure joy in acting out scenes from Brokeback Mountain and The Wolf of Wall Street. The joke never gets old because Bayer commits completely, smiling her way through material that no kid should be that excited about. Her Weekend Update bits are just as strong, especially when she's reporting on wildly inappropriate topics with total innocence. Guest appearances from Lady Gaga and Scarlett Johansson add to the chaos, and Michael Che trying to keep things under control on Update makes it even better. It's a funny, affectionate look at one great character and a reminder of why Vanessa Bayer's run on SNL was so special. [Ep 164]

Just like house music and music in general.Anything that is really funny is because we know it to be true in our gut, but it's wrapped up and opened in surprising ways. You feel it. It's undeniable.Love Patrice O'Neal (RIP) and Bill Burr, followed by Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Eddie Murphy, Shane Gillis, and Jimmy Carr. More philosophers than joke writers.Zero convincing. It's either good or it's not._________________It's the same with house music. It's undeniable. You either love it as soon as you hear it or you don't care for it.That's why it's such an emotional, physical and mental release. When we receive it and the tracks connect with us. We get goosebumps because it's so good.I think about how music and other art forms affect me and why. Why do I love certain artists? It's that ones that respect that purity in making, sharing and others receiving their art. When I'm DJ'ing in front of a crowd, there is nothing like it. I've spend 4-8hrs the week before prepping the tracks that I'd like the option of spinning. Then seeing people's reactions to each track that I LOVE that MOVE me... dropping them and seeing the reactions. The giving and receiving. When out dancing and receiving a DJ's vision of house music. Whether to a group of manufacturing executives, city government leaders, business students, human resources professionals, and countless others, the goal remains the same. Bob wants people to understand that the way we lead impacts the way people live. Bob has long been inspired by the work of The Aspen Institute and their contribution to the conversation around leadership in the world. So, it was an honor when he was invited to speak at the 2017 Aspen Ideas Festival alongside a diverse slate of names, such as New York Times columnist David Brooks, Sen. Cory Booker, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, Former HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros, Saturday Night Live Weekend Update anchors Michael Che and Colin Jost, Katie Couric, Former Disney CEO Michael Eisner, Pulitzer-Prize winner Thomas Friedman, Political Writer Bill Kristol, and Author Susan Orlean. “The Privilege of Leadership” was the theme of his talk, where he was able to tell the stories of our learnings and journey at Barry-Wehmiller to this esteemed audience. It is our hope that our message took root in many of the discussions that occurred and will continue to resonate afterward, causing action and change in more and more organizations. Kevin Nash has a lot on his mind this week, and it goes far beyond the Knicks. From getting high before a back workout to debating the collapse of American politics, this episode moves fast and hits hard. Expect tangents, truths, and a few curveballs only Big Sexy could throw. There's a new movie in the pipeline, a Martin Short story that involves a robe, and some choice words about the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Nash shares a few memories from the road, reflects on his singing skills, and maybe overshares about what it's like to receive Uber Eats in nothing but a talk show gift. The conversation turns serious as Kevin and Sean tackle issues like autism, dyslexia, and how the education system fails kids who don't fit the mold. They also respond to a heartfelt message from a listener whose son with autism is a big fan of the show. It's one of the most personal segments they've done in a while. Later, they go deep into testosterone replacement therapy, longevity doctors, and what it means to stay sharp, healthy, and functional into your sixties. If you've ever wondered what it's like to navigate aging while still grinding, this is a window into the mindset. And yes, the NBA comes up. Knicks, Pacers, Vegas odds, and the unspoken truth about who the networks actually want in the Finals. It's a mix of hoops and hustle, politics and pop culture, heart and heat. Baker—who grew up traditionally conservative as the granddaughter of George H.W. Bush's secretary of state James Baker—finds a way to turn that trauma into super dark comedy in her new Netflix special ‘The Mother Lode,' half of which she recorded while pregnant and the other half after giving birth. In this episode, Baker discusses how her political upbringing has influenced her approach to both parenting and comedy and how becoming a mother has only made her more ambitious to succeed as a comedian. She also discusses the unique challenges of her role as “Weekend Update” writer on ‘Saturday Night Live,' what makes a great joke for Colin Jost and Michael Che, why she thinks her viral comments about ‘SNL' host Travis Kelce “practicing reading” were misconstrued, and why she's “dying” to perform at a celebrity roast.
