What are our obligations and duties as it relates to the social, ecclesial, spiritual, and civil spheres?
In this passage, Peter addresses the challenging concept of submission to authority, urging believers to submit to all lawful civil authority for the Lord's sake. Although submission may seem countercultural to our society that values freedom and independence, our submission is not merely to human authorities; it is an expression of our faith in God's sovereignty. Peter also provides four pillars of Christian conduct: honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, and honor the king. While submission to the governing authorities has limits – especially when we are called to obey God rather than men – we as Christians are called to be witnesses to the Gospel through our integrity and peaceful submission. Jesus Himself exemplified this, submitting to human authorities even unto death, which ultimately accomplished our salvation. By following His example of submission, we trust in God's higher plan and bring glory to His name in a watching world.

He goes in depth a little more about what this medicines purpose is and the background. From there, we dive into a variety of other topics as well. Always a solid time.
In the November issue of First Things Magazine, Evangelicals and Catholics Together, an ecumenical movement for political and social change founded in 1994 by the cosigners Charles Colson and Richard John Neuhaus, has released a statement. Titled 'Fear God, Honor the Emperor,' it represents a fairly robust primer on Christian political philosophy in the 21st century takes shape and is laid out accordingly. In this episode, I want to read through the statement and provide some running commentary on its claims and insights. As well as providing a briefer summary of its highlights, as I see them. First, a denial of both nature and God's authority endangers us all. Godlessness is leading us to tyranny. If God has called us to more, the Zeitgeist will not hear of it, preferring repressive and intractable separations based on race, gender, and sexual orientation for their political utility. If this is all there is, it is totalitarianism. And yet our long, rich tradition as Christians must lead us to pursue and embrace both civil and ecclesiological reformations. We now inhabit a society which stubbornly denies God's call to place our faith in Him. Thus, in rejecting God's authority, we also see the unraveling of the basis for human authority. Christians cannot go along with this, neither can we legitimately recognize any human authority as absolute because all human authority is dependent on God's authority, which moderates and provides a check on it. That is also to say, by way of reminder, that Jesus is Lord in the present-tense, and not only in the past or in the kingdom come. Thus we reject the de facto godlessness which says civil authority is a merely human convention and agreement, moderated only by its imagination and will. What we do, and must, support, respect, and honor in human authority is the prohibition and curbing of evil by the civil magistrate. And yet governments throughout history have rebelled against God's law. And when they have turned against morality and justice, Christians not only have practiced civil disobedience, they have also worked to replace those governments with others which use their power properly, and to which Christians can be loyal without disobeying God. We cannot ignore, then, the wrongs and falsehoods which are to be found in every human governmental system in this fallen world, including our own. Rather, we work to reform these, even as we recognize that the truest and deepest peace which may result, by God's grace, is only found in honoring and worshipping God as His people. There are indeed limits on what can be accomplished politically. For instance, our political, economic, and social structures presuppose fallen, sinful humanity acting out of ambition, greed, and self-interest. Yet it is a mistake that too many Christians react to the limitations on the peace which is attainable in the earthly city by denying it has any value whatsoever so long as it fails to measure up to the ideals achievable only in the City of God. A refusal to content ourselves with the boundaries of what peace can be had here on Earth may even be an ungodly discontentedness with God not having yet brought about the replacement of this Heavens and Earth with the New Creation by those who say they are conservative. Meanwhile, we do well to note that the greatest atrocities in the modern era were carried out by men and women who were intent on realizing something like this hope independently, on their own power, in their own timing, and in their own way. Thus we see a pair of errors sent into the world representing our impatience and discontentedness: both Activism and Inactivism. God's servant must reject both alike, and for the same reason, that neither is obedience or a faithful witness to God's goodness and grace. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

The idea for Honor & Glory was started by conversations in the back of Disciple's tour bus. As they were chatting about their weekends, the realization hit them that worship was important enough that they were all playing in church on their days off. Since they were all worshipping separately at their respective churches, why not do it together... right? As Kevin Young tells us, they're all best friends who are wanting to share the message of Christ through music. Every opportunity to share Christ is important, and the Honor & Glory project opens different doors for them to do so.

Mark 7 NLT read aloud by Simon MacFarlane. 1 One day some Pharisees and teachers of religious law arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. 2 They noticed that some of his disciples failed to follow the Jewish ritual of hand washing before eating. 3 (The Jews, especially the Pharisees, do not eat until they have poured water over their cupped hands, as required by their ancient traditions. 4 Similarly, they don't eat anything from the market until they immerse their hands in water. This is but one of many traditions they have clung to—such as their ceremonial washing of cups, pitchers, and kettles. ) 5 So the Pharisees and teachers of religious law asked him, “Why don't your disciples follow our age-old tradition? They eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony.” 6 Jesus replied, “You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 7 Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.' 8 For you ignore God's law and substitute your own tradition.” 9 Then he said, “You skillfully sidestep God's law in order to hold on to your own tradition. 10 For instance, Moses gave you this law from God: ‘Honor your father and mother,' and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.' 11 But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can't help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.' 12 In this way, you let them disregard their needy parents. 13 And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others.” 14 Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “All of you listen,” he said, “and try to understand. 15 It's not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart. ” 16 17 Then Jesus went into a house to get away from the crowd, and his disciples asked him what he meant by the parable he had just used. 18 “Don't you understand either?” he asked. “Can't you see that the food you put into your body cannot defile you? 19 Food doesn't go into your heart, but only passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.” (By saying this, he declared that every kind of food is acceptable in God's eyes.) 20 And then he added, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you. 21 For from within, out of a person's heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. 23 All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.” 24 Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre. He didn't want anyone to know which house he was staying in, but he couldn't keep it a secret. 25 Right away a woman who had heard about him came and fell at his feet. Her little girl was possessed by an evil spirit, 26 and she begged him to cast out the demon from her daughter. Since she was a Gentile, born in Syrian Phoenicia, 27 Jesus told her, “First I should feed the children—my own family, the Jews. It isn't right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.” [...]
Big Idea: Christian freedom expresses itself in submission for the Lord’s sake. 1. Glorify God by Submitting to and Honoring Everyone (1 Peter 2:13, 17)2. Glorify God by Submitting to the Government (1 Peter 2:14, 17)3. Freedom In Christ Looks Like Submission (1 peter 2:15-17)

Why would Jesus focus on his mother while on the cross? Is family important during a crisis? How can we take care of our own families?Pastor Jamie Nunnally shares why taking care of our natural and spiritual families is important for believers. In this message, we learn key ways that we can take care of our families.John 19:25-27 “Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.”Taking care of natural and spiritual family is a theme found all throughout scripture: NATURAL FAMILY1 Timothy 5:8 “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” Don’t treat family based on their facts or your feelings; treat them based on the truth of what God says about them. Mark 7:9-13 “Then he said, “You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition. For instance, Moses gave you this law from God: ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’ But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’ In this way, you let them disregard their needy parents. And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others.” You can’t dishonor your family in the name of godliness because honoring your family is godly. If you have ungodly parents, honor the position, not the person. SPIRITUAL FAMILYEphesians 2:19 “Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.” Galatians 6:10 “Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.” Christians help everyone, but we focus on our natural family and our spiritual family first. How do we take care of family?1. Give something.Matthew 6:19-21 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”What if you woke up tomorrow and only had those things that you had given away in the past? 2. Do something.Mark 10:44-45 “Whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” The more you serve, the more you look like Jesus. Serving others turns selfishness into selflessness. 3. Say something.Prov 16:24 – “Kind words are like honey—sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.”Your ability to speak isn’t just a gift from God FOR you, but a gift to others THROUGH you. James 1:26 - If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.Your words can help or hurt. Don’t undo your good deeds with your speech. Final Question:How can you take care of your family during this crisis? Your spiritual family? Your community?
Peter begins to flesh out Christians' "honorable conduct" in the world by exhorting us to living in willing submission to civil government. An undeniably contentious issue in our own day, God's word has essential wisdom for us in how to relate to our earthly authorities, with our eye on Jesus Christ.

Episode 308 | Dr. Michael Horton and Adriel Sanchez answer caller questions. Show Notes CoreChristianity.com Key questions answered in today's show: 1. I go to a church where people can serve themselves communion. I'm new to this church and I have never been to a church that does this. I did talk to one of the pastors about it and he assured me that it was Biblical, because what mattered was that people were being led by the Spirit to take communion. This still bothers me. Can you tell me what you think about this and provide Biblical support for your view? 2. I was just wondering about prayer. The other day I asked a number of my friends to pray for another friend who is going to have surgery. I realized after I did that that one of my friends is not a Christian, and she actually doesn't even pray. So, when she replied she just said, “I'll just hold her close to my heart.” Now I'm wondering, did I goof when I asked her that, or does God honor good thoughts too? 3. What's the difference between excusing sin and showing grace? 4. Why does God tell Jeremiah that he will not listen when his people call for him? 5. How do we get back to the teachings of the early church?

Have you heard the phrase “Controlling the Narrative”? We hear about in politics. Infamous scandals. It is also a driving theme in Mark. The Gospel of Mark is this continual struggle for control over the narrative of God. (custody battle) Mark 7:1 “One day some Pharisees and teachers of religious law arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus.” “Come to intimidate Jesus”. “Come to shut up Jesus”. “Come to interrogate Jesus”. “Come to regain control over God." 5 So the Pharisees and teachers of religious law asked him, “Why don’t your disciples follow our age-old tradition? They eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony.”6 Jesus replied, “You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote,‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.7 Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’8 For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.”9 Then he said, “You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition. 10 For instance, Moses gave you this law from God: ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’ 11 But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. Who controls worship/practice? Who controls Scripture? “You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition. Example of Outside-In “faith”: Pharisees - Jesus compares them to the non-kosher food Example of Inside-Out faith Jesus gives: Gentile Women A deaf person unable to speak. Who are we? Am I inside out or Outside in? Do you fight the light? Who controls how I worship?Religion can be Idol Worship Religious words can be taking God’s name in vain Do you read the meaning into the Scripture, or does the Scripture read meaning into you? The truth will ultimately control the narrative. Luke 8:17 all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all. John 8:31 Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”John 14:6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.
The church has good reasons for submitting to man’s authority. Peter begins with the admonition to resist strong desires that are not in line with God’s will. Fleshly lusts cover a broad spectrum of potential sins! An important consideration, given all of this, is, “Why?” Why should we struggle so to abstain, rather than indulge?

REFLECTION QUOTES “No one living in an established democracy should be complacent about its survival….[T]he power of the democratic ideal remains immense….Even as we raise questions about how soon everyone will get there, we should have no doubt as to what kind of society lies at the end of History.” ~Francis Fukuyama, American political scientist and author of The End of History and the Last Man “His kingdom is an eternal kingdom.” ~Daniel 4:3 “The only real power comes out of a long rifle.” ~Joseph Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union 1924-1953 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.” ~Acts 1:8 “Society in every state is a blessing, but Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil.” ~Thomas Paine (1737-1809), Common Sense, English-American philosopher and political activist “The authorities are God's servants.” ~Romans 13:6 “What identifies an individual as a king is how other people behave towards him. All authority is assumed, and if other people don't accept your authority then you don't have it. Perhaps the critical thing to being a convincing figure of authority is actually not to try too hard.” ~Patrick Stewart, British actor “There is no authority except that which God has established.” ~Romans 13:1 “Our faith, our nation, our safety and our future depend on decisions made by our government each and every single day. It is a matter of life and death. It is the end-all and be-all. It is the world's last best hope.” ~ Justin Haskins,Our Lousy, Lying, No Good, Government, “If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.” ~I Corinthians 15:19 SERMON PASSAGE Acts 5:17-18, 25-29 (ESV) 17 But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy 18 they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison. 25 And someone came and told them, “Look! The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.” 26 Then the captain with the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people. 27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them, 28 saying, “We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man's blood upon us.” 29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. Romans 12:14-13:7 (ESV) 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Chapter 13 1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed. 1 Peter 2:9-18 (ESV) 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation. 13 Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. 16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. 17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. 18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust.
Do our traditions block the Holy Spirit? Brent Phillips – Encounter Houston A tradition is the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation. There are some traditions that just don’t make sense but we do it for the sake of tradition. But can these traditions get in the way of the Holy Spirit being able to move through us? How can we move past the traditions that have been handed down to us and have block us from being all in with our relationship with God? Acts 7:51 "You stubborn people! You are heathen at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit? That’s what your ancestors did, and so do you!" A tradition was being handed down that stopped the Holy Spirit from being able to do what he needed to do in the lives of Gods children. This is scary because we see that we have been given far more authority and responsibility when it comes to the things of God than we realize, we have the ability to stop Gods working in our lives. We think that just because God is all-powerful and sovereign that he is going to do whatever it is that he wants to do. But it can’t be considered love and faith if it just happens automatically. We have to be able to make a choice in order for it to be love and faith The Holy Spirit came to these people because he wanted to reveal something to them but they resisted him and stopped him from coming and revealing all God had for them. We need to ask our self, “Am I stopping the Holy Spirit from being able to reveal himself in my life for a man-made tradition that has been passed down for generations?” Mark 7:6-12 "Jesus replied, “You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, ‘these people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’ For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.” Then he said, “You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition. For instance, Moses gave you this law from God: ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’ But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’ In this way, you let them disregard their needy parents." Are we going to worship God how he desires our worship to be or will we continue to worship the way our ancestors have for the sake of tradition. It is time to break free from our man-made traditions and get back to the traditions of Heaven that are past down from God.
