From the legendary Granby High School in Norfolk, Virginia, the path to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for Elliot Gray Simons included some unbelievable feats of wrestling, but it didn't start off with immediate accolades. Simons would win a state championship for Hall of Fame coach Billy Martin before enrolling at tiny Lock Haven State Teachers College. There, Simons would dominate the college wrestling world, becoming the first wrestler in history to win four NAIA national titles and was the first to win four collegiate national championships across any division. He would also win three NCAA titles, battling with some of the titans of the sport, including future members of the Hall of Fame. Seven is the story of one of America's great wrestling minds - a stellar athlete with two Olympic appearances - and a dynamic technical mind - delivering next-level techniques learned at Granby and tweaked for the college wrestling world. Episode 1: Unrolling Granby chronicles Simons' start back in Virginia and his journey to Lock Haven, his first NCAA title and his first appearance at the Olympic Games in Rome. Listen & Follow Etched in StoneApple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Spotify | Deezer | Radio Public | RSS About Gray Simons (From NWHOF.com) During his four years of collegiate competition at Lock Haven University, Gray Simons entered seven national tournaments. He won all seven, and six times was voted outstanding wrestler of the event. Four years he reigned supreme at 115 pounds in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, and all four years was chosen the NAIA's finest, an unparalleled achievement. Three times he won the University Division title in the NCAA and as a junior and senior was voted the outstanding competitor. The only collegiate defeat in his 90 collegiate matches came in his freshman season. He then proceeded to win 84 in a row, a record at the time. In the two years after his graduation, while stationed at the U.S. Military Academy, he continued to annex national championships in military, YMCA and AAU competition. He won the gold medal in the 1963 World Military Games. Gray Simons twice represented his country in the Olympic Games, in 1960 and 1964. On the mat, he was known as a superb technician, with quickness, skill and perfect execution of an infinite variety of moves. His abilities helped spread nationwide the "Granby Series" of moves developed by his Hall of Fame high school coach in Norfolk, Virginia, Billy Martin. After the close of his competitive career, he served with distinction as a collegiate coach at Lock Haven, Indiana State, Tennessee and Old Dominion University, and never has suffered a losing season. Among his proteges were two NCAA champions and several All-Americans. In both roles, as a wrestler and coach, this quiet man has set an outstanding example for young athletes everywhere. As a wrestler of unchallenged achievement and a sportsman of the highest caliber, Elliot Gray Simons is honored as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. One essential ingredient to any actors career is experience. It allows us to develop our craft and hone our skills over time. With each performance, we refine techniques, learn from mistakes, and develop greater emotional and psychological depth in our performances. But this growth in credibility and authenticity in acting comes as much from our offstage lives as it does from our onstage experiences. And today's guest shares both personal and professional challenges that have shaped her not only into a great actress, but an amazing person as well. Sharon Catherine Brown has appeared in films like A Chorus Line and Sister Act 2, in soap operas like Generations, and sitcoms like The Jeffersons, Good Times, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. But theater is where she got her start and remains her first love. From Broadway productions of Dreamgirls and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat to the national tours of The Wiz, Rent, and Jekyll & Hyde, ShayCat (as she's known to friends) has the kind of experiences and resume that any actor would love to have. She and I met this past year doing a new musical version of the classic novel, Anne of Green Gables. And in part one of our conversation, she shares with us the long line of performers in her family (namely Johnny Brown, her father), a harrowing experience in her first Broadway show (Maggie Flynn), and the moment she knew she was born to be a drama queen. Timeline of this episode's conversation: 03:27 - How she got the name ShayCat 05:39 - Story #1: Coming from a long line of Broadway performers 19:55 - Story #2: The moment she knew she was a drama queen 36:50 - Performing difficult scenes with children as well as adults 43:15 - Productions needing to cast big names to get an audience Subscribe to WINMI If you wanna listen to the full conversation (with Audition Stories and the Final Five questions) as well as get early access to every episode, then become a monthly or yearly subscriber to Why I'll Never Make It. In 1993 James Clark, Johnny Brown, Marvin Steward, Bebe Davis, Thomas Levi Sr, and Thomas Moore from Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids Iowa came up with the idea to start the African - American Museum in the state of Iowa. They wanted to preserve, exhibit and teach black history in the state of Iowa. Since its inception, the Museum has had 4 executive directors. The current director LaNisha Reese Cassell is number 4 on that list and she is the first and the only woman to hold that position in almost 30yrs of the museum's existence. In this episode, I had a privilege to talk to LaNisha about the past, present and the future of the museum and the role the museum plays in advancing the civil rights movement. Scott Tayler posted: "This reminds me of my Irish great fourth times grandfather." Old Dude posted: "Longtime listener now exploring other podcasts with emphasis on Celtic music rather than modern social justice causes. Unfortunately this podcast is no longer a relaxing stroll along the high road or the low road to the shores of Loch Lomond. 3 Star rating reflects excellent music and too much SJW discussion." Daniel Joseph reviewed: "You know a good heart when you hear one. Great music through each week. What else do you want?!" Linda Pavlich emailed: "Hello! I just pledged to your podcast. I have been wanting to become a “patron” of the podcast since I first came across it two years ago, and I finally did it! I am of Irish heritage on both sides of my family, but we never really talked about it when I was growing up. I am of the generation that was supposed to be a “melting pot.” My grandparents actually changed their names, to keep their ethnicity hidden. Still - I have always loved Irish music - either makes you want to dance, or cry - so full of emotion. So - when my husband and I joined our local Recreation Center and started working out regularly, my son told me I should look for interesting podcasts to make the exercising easier. When I started searching for podcasts, yours came up - I tried it, and I loved it! Yay! My husband listens to talkie podcasts, and my son is always giving me suggestions (Stuff You Should Know), but I just love your musical offerings. I have purchased some of the music, and listen to it on a playlist, but I really like the variety of the podcast. It sometimes even “makes my day.” Thank you so much for your upbeat presentation. It is especially important now - in the sometimes hateful political climate in our country these days, to remember that we all come from somewhere else, and our various perspectives and cultures can enrich our lives, if we treat each other with respect and joy. I think you do that. Thank you so much for the pure pleasure your podcast brings."

Another great Story of Triumph! Join us on this journey into the life of Dr. Johnny Brown II and discover how his commitment and faith has brought him to today.
When he was a child, Johnny Brown says he dreamed about being a police officer. He always wanted to help people. Part of that dream would eventually come true, but Johnny's time on the police force was cut short by a series of bad decisions that ultimately resulted in him ending up homeless. Johnny has spent a good number of years trying to find his way again in life, and has learned many lessons along the way. He also has been a believer his entire life, and for once says he feels free from the wounds of his past.
Today we have with us Johnny Brown, a Harmony Alumni who talks about restarting his college career after having to deal with issues outside of academics and how he was able to find vision, motivation, and a sense of direction even in the most bleak times. This topic is a major concern for many college students who may have problems outside of university life and feel pressured to quit after the first major challenge. Johnny takes us through times in his life which caused him to pause his education and then find the resolve to get back into University and to continue his higher education against all odds.

It all started with a deer hunt and a camera. At age 14, who thinks to video record their hunts? Jeremy Ballantine did just that and now he owns and operates a hunting videography company after some inspiration from Tom Blais, a great northeast videographer in his own right. Based in Vermont, In Pursuit 365 is comprised of a core group, specifically Jeremy and his hardcore hunting partner from New Hampshire, Johnny Brown. Each have their own techniques that they engage in, but one thing is certain, each love the pursuit of the hunt and everything it teaches. Both openly admit that hunting the big mountains of the west is their preferred setting, but home is New England. We sit down with Jeremy and Johnny in our first ever outdoor recording studio surrounded by the woods, old license plates, and European skulls mounts. Once again we dissect once the habits of world class deer hunters, this time it’s about deer hunting in New England and a little mid-west and big mountain of the west).
