In this episode of Passing Judgment, Jessica Levinson talks with Wall Street Journal tax reporter Richard Rubin to break down the GOP's "big beautiful" tax bill. Richard explains what's in the bill—from tax cuts and increases to spending shifts—and who will be most affected if it passes. They discuss how the bill squeaked through the House, the major sticking points, and what's likely to change as it moves to the Senate. Join us for a clear, accessible look at what's inside the bill and how it could impact Americans' wallets and the federal deficit. Here are three key takeaways you don't want to miss:What's Inside the GOP Tax Bill: The bill primarily extends the 2017 tax cuts, including a higher standard deduction, lower rates, and business relief, while adding temporary cuts like a boosted child tax credit and tip or overtime exemptions. To offset costs, it includes tax hikes, mainly on clean energy and high earners, major cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, and increased spending on border security and defense. How “Typical” is This GOP Bill?: Richard describes it as a “mishmash”—there are conventional GOP elements (like tax cuts for the affluent), but also some Trump-specific provisions, like the “Trump account” (a new children's savings account), faster write-offs for American factories, and anti-immigration measures. The Path Forward in the Senate: Richard explains that the Senate will likely alter the House version, focusing on issues like Medicaid changes and clean energy tax credits.Follow Our Host and Guest: @RichardRubinDC @LevinsonJessica
House Republicans are moving quickly to get a massive tax-and-spending package across the finish line before week's end even as they negotiate with party factions over outstanding concerns. Some Republicans are demanding deeper cuts to social programs like Medicaid to curb deficits as part of the deal and to reduce the package's cost to extend the 2017 tax overhaul. And yet the bill increases the debt limit by $4 trillion and adds billions in spending. Cut out of the process, Democrats oppose the proposal, and even some Republicans have objected to its size and scope. Regardless of where lawmakers fall on the political spectrum, they all seem to agree on one data source: What the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget has to say about the package and what it will do to the national deficit, which now stands at over $36 trillion. On this episode of Talking Tax, Bloomberg Tax reporter Chris Cioffi talks with Maya MacGuineas, longtime president of the nonprofit public policy group, and digs into why the growing debt can be problematic for future economic growth. Let’s discuss the main points of the proposed house GOP tax bill and how it impacts our lives.
The GOP Tax Bill was marketed to supercharge growth, help the middle class, and boost worker pay. It’s sold both as a “tax cut” and as “tax reform.” Some people really liked it, some people really hated it, but most people don't know much about it. Let's find out!Show notes at reconsidermedia.com/podcast See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Taxation is a controversial topic in the United States. Some Americans see taxation as a penalty on hard work, while others see it as a way to alleviate social ills and discourage activity they deem undesirable. And because taxation is inseparable from the question of government's role in people's lives, it is one of the issues that most divides the two major parties in modern America. In today's episode, Bob and Ben speak with Robert McElvaine, an expert on the history of the Great Depression, to get his take on what the past can teach us about tax policy and the economy. McElvaine explains why he thinks that history has disproven the Republican principle of supply side economics, and why he sees the recent GOP-backed tax reform as reminiscent of the policies that led the US into the Great Depression. Dr. Robert S. McElvaine is Elizabeth Chisholm Professor of Arts and Letters and Professor of History at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. He is the author of seven books and the editor of three, including The Great Depression: America, 1929-1941 (Times Books/Random House, 1984, 1993; 25th anniversary edition, 2009). He also pinned an op-ed in the Washington Post entitled "I'm a Depression Historian. The GOP Tax Bill is Straight Out of 1929" (Nov. 30, 2017). This episode is the first in a two-part series on taxation and the economy. The second installment, a conversation with the Manhattan Institute's Brian Reidl, will offer a conservative perspective on tax policy, and will be released on Monday, March 18. Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) shut down the federal government Thursday night—albeit briefly—by holding up a procedural vote over a short-term spending bill that funds the government through March 23. One of Senator Paul's concerns was the massive increase in spending caps. Many in the media and on Capitol Hill criticized Paul’s grandstanding after he voted for the GOP tax bill that added $1.5 trillion to the deficit over the next 10 years. During the Obama years, Republicans routinely railed against raising the deficit. So what changed? Michael and Rick discuss Senator Paul's speech and whether this was the last gasps of the pre-Trump GOP. Dave Weigel, national political reporter for the Washington Post, talks about the Democrats picking up some victories and big pharma taking some losses in the latest spending bill.

This week, House and Senate Republicans came to a deal on a massive, far-reaching tax bill that Congress could vote on as early as next week. If the bill passes, and the President signs it before Christmas, the new tax code will go into effect in this January. Though some of the details of the bill have yet to be confirmed, what is clear is that there is a lot at stake for corporations and individual taxpayers. This week on Money Talking, Charlie Herman talks with Rick Newman, a columnist for Yahoo Finance, about what’s in the extensive bill and what it could mean for taxpayers around the country.
