On this episode of Between Two Beers we're rewinding the clock back two years to when we sat down with Grant Fox. Grant is one of the best to have ever worn the All Blacks 10 jersey and is still regarded as one of the finest goal-kickers of all time. At the time of recording, Grant was in his final weeks as an All Blacks selector and in the process of pulling down the curtain on a 40-year career with New Zealand Rugby. We covered all the most insightful parts of his rugby career, his business, his relationship with Ryan and some of his best stories from travelling with his golf superstar son. He also talks about his 40-year friendship with the late Sir Martin Crowe and his important work with Big Buddies and the importance of being present with your kids. This was one of our favourite episodes and we're really excited to share it with our new listeners. Grant broke the stereotype of stoic rugby man, with passages of real vulnerability and openness. If you didn't catch it the first time around you're in for a treat. Listen on iheart or wherever you get your podcasts from, or watch the video on Youtube. I want to start the show with tributes to 3 people. The first is Brooke Graham. My neighbour and friend from the Coromandel who died recently at the age of just 42 from brain cancer. A fast death inside 9 weeks but slow enough for her to make plans for her 10 year old daughter and her husband. Hers was a death of great grace and I am immensely sad. So to Carrick and MacKenzie, here's to your amazing wife and mother. Then there's Simon Barnett and his support of his wife, Jodi over the past 6 years in her fight against brain cancer as well. This was featured in the Weekend Herald on Saturday. Of course all of us here have on the afternoon show have known what Simon and his family have been going through. His strength, courage and love while still working this demanding job is amazing. It's good that you now know. And finally I want to acknowledge Richie Poulton, the director of the Dunedin study who passed away yesterday at the age of 61, again of cancer. Richie and I were at Auckland Grammar together. In the same cohort were people like Martin Crowe and Grant Fox and business people Ian Narev and Simon Herbert. But Richie is the best of all of us. At school he was smart and sporty. I knew him as a nice bloke and a very good cricketer. I had no idea of the greatness within him. He was featured last night on the Sunday programme. It was a heart-breaking watch. Now, if you don't know, the Dunedin Study is a research programme that has followed the progress of 1,000 children born in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1972-73, from birth to midlife. Over 1300 papers have been published about how your environment and upbringing influences your situation. It's world famous, as is Richie. Last night, John Campbell asked him what the greatest finding was. Richie said poverty. He said you can't undo what happens in childhood. In 2016 the Dunedin Study published a paper called "Childhood disadvantage strongly predicts costly adult life-course outcomes". It found that nearly 80 percent of adult economic burden can be attributed to just 20 percent of the study members. The researchers determined that this “high cost” group accounted for 81 percent of criminal convictions, 66 percent of welfare benefits, 78 per cent of prescription fills and 40 percent of excess obese kilograms. Professor Poulton says that they also found that members of this group can be identified with high accuracy when as young as 3. Target these guys and you solve a lot of problems. But as he said last night no-one has talked about poverty in this election campaign. Labour made it their core goal over the past 6 years, and yet all they've done is throw money at all beneficiaries. And National doesn't utter the p word at all. It was- cut benefits and belief it can stem criminality with longer sentences. Yet back in 2017, Bill English quoted the 2016 study and talked about social investment. If we can identify the truly vulnerable, why don't we help them, and just them. National has abandoned all that work it did 6 years ago and I have no idea why. On tonight's episode of The Gastroenteritis Blues, Steve, Dan and Emily are reunited to discuss the Sixers' 1-2 week as they've continued their West Coast road trip. What have they thought of Tyrese Maxey's continued impressive play? How about Charles Bassey's emergence in the Nuggets game? How badly has the team missed Joel Embiid lately? They then debrief from Dan and Steve's podcast with Sam Amick about Ben Simmons, and discuss the latest news on the Simmons front. What do they make of the conflicting rumors this week re: the Sixers' possible interest in former Sixer Jerami Grant? How might the deck shuffling in Sacramento affect the Simmons trade landscape? If they were both available, would our hosts prefer Tyrese Haliburton or De'Aaron Fox in return for Simmons? The two teams for the Saturday's North v South match at Sky Stadium in Wellington have been named and as expected it will see a battle between Beauden Barrett and Richie Mo'unga. The two All Blacks first five-eighths will face off while Beauden will also be up against his brother Jordie who has been named at fullback for the South. The North side features five Blues players in the pack including number eight Hoskins Sotutu who impressed early in the Super Rugby season. Former Hurricanes pairing Beauden Barrett and TJ Perenara will link up with Aaron Smith named on the bench.Barrett's Blues teammate Rieko Ioane has been named at centre alongside Anton Lienert-Brown while the side features a dynamic back three of Caleb Clarke, Sevu Reece and Damian McKenzie. The South is dominated by Crusaders with Chiefs prop Nepo Laulala the odd one out in the tight five. The South side also have pace and skill in a back three of George Bridge, Will Jordan, Jordie Barrett with Jack Goodhue and Braydon Ennor in the centres. Brad Weber has been named at halfback inside of Mo'unga.North Head Coach John Plumtree said: "It's an exciting squad that we've picked for this special match. There's a huge amount of lot of talent in the side. There's some real power in the forwards and some speed in the backs."The North has gelled together really well this week and the players are having a lot of fun. They're really excited at the challenge against the South and certainly not lacking in any motivation. There will be a real intensity to the match with two really good teams going toe to toe," Plumtree added. The Head Coach of the South team, Brad Mooar, said the South side had some strong combinations, with additional strength and pace thrown in as well."It's always hard to pick those in the 23 and all 28 in our squad could've been selected. We have a fantastic group of men who have all made the most of this week, building relationships and having fun with each other as well as learning new things and formulating our game plan. There's been lots of good-natured banter between the teams and a lot of parochial rivalry.""The only thing missing at the stadium will be the fans and we're really disappointed we can't share the experience there with them. We know there will be a huge audience watching at home so we hope they'll enjoy what's shaping up as match for the history books," Mooar said. The teams are as follows:The North teamForwards: 1. Karl Tu'inukuafe 2. Asafo Aumua, 3. Ofa Tuungafasi, 4. Patrick Tuipulotu (captain), 5. Tupou Vaa'i, 6. Akira Ioane, 7. Ardie Savea, 8. Hoskins Sotutu.Backs: 9. TJ Perenara, 10. Beauden Barrett, 11. New Zealand Rugby have announced the squads for the North v South clash on August 29.The squads have been selected by All Blacks selectors Ian Foster, Grant Fox, and John Plumtree. The All Blacks assistant coaches will coach the two sides, with Plumtree and Scott McLeod coaching the North and Brad Mooar and Greg Feek coaching the South.Foster called the clash is a "once-in-a-generation match"."This is a chance for these players to be part of something really special. It's a once-in-a-generation match for them and players who have previously taken part in these matches have talked about how unique and memorable it was. Now these two teams get to write their own history and stories around this match."The match will bring out the best in everyone and I'm sure there will be parochial rivalry in spades. It's a special game because it celebrates where the players made their provincial debuts and, for some, where they really took those first steps in their professional careers."The players have worked really hard and played some outstanding rugby in Investec Super Rugby Aotearoa, and we're excited at the breadth of talent up and down the country. There is a huge amount of talent here and it will be a wonderful celebration of rugby for our fans."Samuel Whitelock has been named as captain of the South team and Patrick Tuipulotu captain of the North."Sam and Patrick are two special players who have had outstanding seasons. They will lead their sides with their own flavour as captains and are both proven and experienced leaders," Foster said.Richie Mo'unga and Beauden Barrett. A pioneer for sport in New Zealand has passed away. All Blacks great Andy Haden has died aged 69, after a long battle with cancer. The former lock played 117 matches and 41 tests for the All Blacks between 1972 and 1985.Former All Blacks first five Grant Fox told D'Arcy Waldegrave he was devastated when he heard the news, and Haden was an "advocate"."Andy was a pioneer, he advocated for the professional game well before its time, he sort of flirted around with the rules, he was always challenging, he fought for players rights."Even in the face of some adversity and push back at times, if he believed he was right and it was to the betterment of others, he would stand his ground."I always admired Andy for that [his strong opinions]."Mr Fox says Mr Haden was a colossus on the field and a great leader."Andy was getting towards the end of his career when I started with Auckland, and I can remember vividly how demanding he was."
Martin Devlin chats to former All Black flyhalf and now selector Grant Fox, on what he's made of Super Rugby Aotearoa thus far and where the selectors thoughts are at a month out from the naming of the first All Blacks squad of the year.
The first five-eighth's record points tally and marshalling of stars like John Kirwan made the playmaker a key cog in the 1987 Rugby World Cup-winning All Blacks and champion Auckland teams. His distinctive goal-kicking ritual became as reassuring as a metronome, and a model for future number 10.During his time with the All Blacks from 1985 to 1993, he wore the number 10 jersey, and was the main goal kicker for the All Blacks. He amassed 645 points from 46 All Black Test Matches. He is considered a true pioneer of the modern art of goal kicking, in particular the technicalities of leaning the ball forward, which has been adopted by world class kickers since.Fox has been a player, coach, commentator and is currently one of the All Black selectors, a position he has held since 2011.www.theDOC.nzwww.patreon.com/theDOCNZwww.twitter.com/patbrittenden- Like - Share - Subscribe -
