Mid-South's national expansion is well under way. Some big names are arriving on the scene. The President of the UWF is going to confront Eddie Gilbert and his Russians, the Fantastics and Sheepherders are cranking up their feud and The Fabulous Freebirds are back in the territory. DiBiase will enlist some help to take a walk on Bad Street. All that and a Michael Hayes music video and a fun segment with the Simpsons and classic tag teams. That's great. It's a strong angle. That one with the Fabulous Freebirds. Nicely done. But where's the rest? Is there another angle? Well, Ric Flair battles Kevin Von Erich. And the Missing Link is here! Yeeeessss...but any other angles? Maybe next week...
Welcome back to The Lawcast! This time our hosts go back all the way to 1984 to cover the David Von Erich Memorial Parade of Champions, the highwater mark for World Class Championship Wrestling. Tim and Rich flashback to Texas in 1984. Tragedy had struck the Von Erich family in February when David Von Erich was stricken with an intestinal illness and passed away while on tour in Japan. Fritz, the patriarch and promoter of World Class Championship Wrestling assembled a super card in his honor with the main event being Ric Flair vs Kerry Von Erich for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. The card is sprinkled with other familiar faces, like Kamala the Ugandan Giant, The Fabulous Freebirds, Butch Reed, and the rest of the Von Erich clan, including Fritz, who returned to the ring to defend the family's honor. This was an emotionally charged show with great action and one of the loudest and passionate stadium crowds we've ever seen on this show. Thanks for listening! On this episode of the Noobs and Knockouts Podcast, we bring Claire back to watch a little World Class! We've all watched The Iron Claw, now to watch the wrestling the movie was based on. It's 1983, WCCW is on the come up, nobody has died yet, and the hottest feud in Texas is The Von Erich brothers vs The Fabulous Freebirds. Also on this episode, a ton of debuts, a few ethnic stereotypes, poorly used camera work, a potentially queer icon, and a lot of history Austin apparently didn't need to research. Plus a whole conversation about Super Bowl halftime shows. Won't you join us?
Kevin Von Erich and his sons, Marshall and Ross, talk about their legendary family's wrestling dynasty, and reveal what they think about “The Iron Claw,” the new movie about their family's storied life. Kevin explains what it was like growing up with dad, Fritz Von Erich, and his brothers, Kerry, David, Mike and Chris, how they build World Class Championship Wrestling into one of the hottest territories, and what inspired some of their groundbreaking production ideas and their in-ring style which ultimately changed the wrestling business. They talk about the tragedy that befell the family, and what it means to carry on their legacy. Kevin also talks about some of their incredible feuds and matches with the likes of The Fabulous Freebirds and Gino Hernandez. This really was a 1-match show, but that 1 match sure delivered the goods! In the main event WarGames match, Sting's Squadron (Sting, Barry Windham, Dustin Rhodes, Ricky Steamboat and Nikita Koloff) faced off against the Dangerous Alliance (Steve Austin, Rick Rude, Arn Anderson, Bobby Eaton and Larry Zbyszko) in a bloody, brutal, awesome match full of carnage! A match to determine the #1 contenders for the IWGP Tag Team Titles (involving the Steiners) is also pretty good, partners Flyin' Brian and The Z-Man explode for the WCW Light Heavyweight Championship, Terry Taylor and Greg Valentine defend the WCW US Tag Titles against the Fabulous Freebirds, and Johnny B. Badd is in action. We've also got a lot of goofy gimmicks like Big Josh and the Super Invader, so there's that. In the news, we discuss yet another leadership change in WCW, steroids and other drugs in wrestling, AAA forming after breaking away from EMLL, and much more! We start off with WCW, where we talk about Slamboree PPV, the last to have the “Legends Reunion” theme, including Gordon Solie's "surprise" hall of fame induction, plus everything else on the show like Ric Flair injuring Angelo Poffo.
