Three IRLAG teammates- Nicole Rambsey, Lindsay Long, and Cheryl Kreinbring- planned and trained for months to attempt this epic R2R2R in one single day. The Rim to Rim to Rim is a 40-48 mile hike that has about 11,000 feet of elevation gain and 11,000 feet elevation loss. That would be inspiring enough, but wait until you hear about how Val, the tech-challenged nurse forced to retire early because of an injury, decided that she and her biologist daughter-in-law were JUST the people who should swoop in and save an internet-based movement community on the brink of shutdown…  literally weeks before COVID locked us all inside, by ourselves. The same drive that gets Val and her community moving "a mile a day, their way", served the 365 Mile Challenge business well, and Val and Kayla recently started their fifth year as stewards of the company and its app, offshoot communities, ambassadorships, and virtual races.I hope you'll check out Val's website, 365milechallenge.org, as well as #365MileChallenge and @365MileChallenge on Instagram - and maybe even get involved in the challenge, or a virtual race, or just take advantage of all the useful resources and tips she's curated on her fabulous website! When you're stuck in a rut, or life is going sideways for whatever reason, sometimes it only takes a teeny little prod to get a teeny little dose of movement to get you redirected to a brighter place. Yes, that one. Black Canyon Ultras in Arizona is one of the biggest and most competitive trail running races in North America, and they have both a 100k on Saturday and a 60k on Sunday. With over 1400 people doing the race in total, the 100 mile challenge option of doing both 100k and 60k fields less than 50 people each year. Each participant in this challenge must complete the 100k as soon as possible and make it back to the shuttle in time for the start of the 60k on Sunday. Listen as we hear all about the obstacles and challenges this year's race proceed. Included a massive snow storm, and an even more massive race delay that put the 100 mile challenge in jeopardy. We hear all about Matt's perspective in what he is calling the hardest 100 mile event he has ever participated in. We also hear about other performances, including those not-so-fortunate with their racing performance and overall weekend, and the overall thoughts on the race itself. So sit back and let's hear all about Matt's epic weekend and what makes Black Canyon one of the most rewarding races around today!Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. Run The Race
#172: Ultra Runner Hopes To Save Lives With 444 Mile Challenge, Years After His Suicide Attempt

Run The Race

It's a huge challenge in September, Suicide Awareness Month. My guest for this episode of "Run The Race" knows how pain and failure can make you feel like giving up on life, but he wants to provide hope, in part through his upcoming longest run ever. (3:20) Phil Parsons, a combat infantry veteran and ultra runner and husband/dad, is planning to go 444 miles on foot, running or walking that distance over the course of 11 days, all to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention, especially among vets: https://pledgeit.org/natr. What's his training been like for the 444 that will happen September 20-30 from TN to MS on the Natchez Trace? How about his emotions? He's also doing this to change the narrative of his life. (11:25) Phil joined the Army not too long before the September 11 attacks, ending up on deployments to Iraq, seeing horrible things that did not bother him until he came back home. He talks about being angry, losing his marriage, being emotionless. (18:05) This veteran tried to kill himself several times, the last suicide attempt being a gun to his head 16 years ago, in September - this 444 mile challenge being around the anniversary of that. He describes why he almost ended it all and why he didn't go through with it. (24:30) Through all the pain, he found running...starting with a marathon in GA, moving up to a 50K, then the Pinhoti 100. At first, he was often running angry, but found something different on the trails: the feeling of being a kid again, getting to be himself - without a mask. Now, he GETS to run and also helps other veterans on his job as a social worker. He loves helping fellow troops, but had to take care of himself first. (31:49) For his upcoming 444 miles, Phil discusses the logistics (40 miles per day), support(getting help from running group "Band of Brothers"), and nutrition/hydration that will be central to his week-and-a-half journey. Think electrolytes, PB&Js, Chex Mix, and more. Meantime, his triathlete wife is no slouch, training for an Ironman. You can learn more about the 444 here: https://unbridledrunning.com/the-four-forty-four/ Part of his journey is also being a (42:48) cult survivor, just going along as he grew up, but being terrified to break free, and finally being able to question things in life. (47:07) Phil also has a life-saving message for anyone, especially former/current military, that involves a story about a bridge on the Natchez Trace that has seen too much tragedy. The takeaway: Sit with the pain and discomfort in life or running, and it will get better, things will turn around. Stay in motion and do something! After our chat, I close the pod in prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. Daily Leadership Challenges and Tips We hope you enjoy these daily leadership tips and challenges. Our hope is that these tips and challenges will motivate you, make you think, provide you with actionable steps, bring your team together, make your team more productive and profitable, and generally keep you interested in continually learning about leadership, because leadership is a life-long learning process. This show is brought to you by The Current Leadership Coaching Team or CLC Team, and we offer a variety of ways for you to continually have leadership training and development. Our primary focus is on team leaders; specifically, leaders in the manufacturing industry who have multiple leaders they work with while leading their own teams both independently and in conjunction with other teams within the same organization (either at one large site or in separate locations). We have seen how different leaders within an organization can be leading their teams in vastly different ways, producing different results. We work to unify all of the leaders of an organization so that you have one big SUPERIOR Team, or a team that is Self-Aware, Unified, Persevering, Empowered, Relationally Safe, Intentional, Optimized, and Resourceful. The CLC Team accomplishes this is a variety of ways and by using various learning methods: -       3 to 4-hour workshops (on-site or online) -       Online Leadership Community (weekly zoom calls that cover leadership topics) -       The Complete Leadership Development System -       Leadership Mastermind (online and annual event)  Our Current Online Community for Leaders is currently open! The monthly price is $47 a month and this includes one weekly “live” zoom call, full access to our leadership library of video courses, full access to all the replays of prior zoom calls, and a private community to connect with other leaders! In Carrie-Ann's own wordsI'm taking on the 28 Mile Challenge this September for Teenage Cancer Trust.Sadly my beautiful, brave, stunning, kind girl Alana has relapsed with AML for the 3rd time. I have no words, I am speechless. Walking 28 miles may not seem a lot, but getting up and dressed to face the day like she does is harder than you think. So if you would like to give me another reason to get up and out each day then please donate. Alana is being cared for by the TCT in Cardiff, with too many other young people facing the worst imaginable trauma. I would just like to help give them the best support they can have xEvery day, seven young people aged 13-24 hear the words "you have cancer". They will each need specialised nursing care and support to get them through it. Teenage Cancer Trust are the only UK charity dedicated to meeting this vital need - so no young person faces cancer alone.Every £30 raised could pay for an hour of care from a Teenage Cancer Trust nurse, who knows what cancer really means to young people and can provide thoughtful, sensitive, expert support.Thank you for your support https://www.facebook.com/donate/851422696612043/164093836709444This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4110266/advertisement
