Of avond toch?

What started out as a break from the pandemic has turned into a social enterprise with an environmental agenda. Angel Riley started visiting the beaches around her home in Eastern Passage and noticed all of the debris along the coast. So she started picking it up. That has evolved into the Scotian Shores Clean Up group and more than 100-thousand pounds of debris being removed from the coastline of Canada's Ocean Playground. The group also repurposes some of the material they find to create art and other items they sell to help offset their cleaning costs. This year, Angela decided to create a Valentine out of that debris and present it to Nova Scotia's Minister of Environment and Climate Change. That happened on Friday, ahead of another planned beach sweep before February 14th.

We all understand the importance of equity in today’s society. As social revolutionaries, we often focus on creating economic equity, racial equity, and gender equity, but what about the disproportionate power dynamic between students and those “in charge” of their education? In the adult-dominated world of academia, how do we engage youth as partners, contributors, and primary stakeholders in the important conversations and decisions within their schools? And how do we hold space and create the change they are so hungry for? Today on the podcast, I'm speaking with UP for Learning’s Executive Director Lindsey Halman and Youth Advisory Council member Evelyn Monje. UP empowers students by creating a youth-adult partnership for change, fostering a student-centered learning environment, and fostering the power of autonomy to our students, creating a socially just climate and culture for all. Listen in! About Lindsey Halman and Evelyn Monje: Lindsey Halman joined the UP team in 2018 after 15 years as a middle-level educator, leader, and advocate. Prior to joining UP, she co-founded The Edge Academy at Essex Middle School. Edge Academy created a strong focus on youth voice and partnership, student-centered learning, project-based learning, and restorative practices. Lindsey holds her National Board Certification as a middle-level generalist and is a strong advocate for reimagining and transforming education. Evelyn Monje is a new employee of UP for Learning as of 2021. She is a current senior at Winooski High School and is enrolled in the Early College program through the Community College of Vermont. Evelyn is an active advocate for antiracism and equity in her community. She is passionate about collaborating with youth and adults to understand and address both antiracism and equity through restorative practices. Dan Stevens is the sheriff of a small Texas town who checks out a disturbance that turns to murder. The killer is still in the house and he tries to kill Dan, but Dan stops him and arrests him. The killer attempts to flee, but is shot and killed and is taken to a medical institute. Three doctors, led by Dr. Philip Spires, operate on the killer, and using a formula the doctors made, they bring him back to life. If that's not bad enough, the formula also made the killer indestructible. Dr. Tom Halman tries to stop the killer, but he and his wife are killed. After the two remaining doctors are killed, the killer goes after Dr. Halman's sister Alison, and it's up to Sheriff Dan Stevens to stop him.

“It’s hard to build a startup. Its full of negatives, everything is against you, but in the case of Cryptext we didn’t just have everything that a normal startup has against you, we had an entire fucking government.”— Mayer MizrachiLocation: SkypeDate: Saturday, July 21st 2018Company: CriptextRole: FounderIn September 2013 Criptext, a startup led by Mayer Mizrachi, a citizen of Panama living in the US, started working with Panama's National Authority for Government Innovation. Criptext tailored its encrypted messaging service to meet the needs of the Panamanian government.Mayer viewed the government contract as a huge opportunity and a potential stepping stone to other governments and large corporations around the world. The initial contract with Panama was for $200,000, followed by a rolling subscription.Initially, the integration of the system appeared successful; however, in July 2014, not long after Criptext had completed their work, the President of Panama left office. With this came a shift in personnel and Mayer's relationship with the government body changed. Traffic on Criptext dropped significantly, and his new contact Irvin Halman was not replying to his emails offering to help with onboarding. After trying and failing to maintain contact with Halman, Mayer and Criptext were accused of defrauding the Panamanian government and became subject of a criminal investigation, instigation. In December 2015, Mayer decided to take a break from the stress of running Cryptext and the criminal investigation and went to Colombia to celebrate the New Year with some friends. When he landed in Cartagena, Mayer was met by Interpol agents, arrested and told he faced extradition to Panama. While fighting extradition Mayer spent month's in Colombian prison, but on September 7th, 2016 Mayer was deported to Panama where he was banned from leaving the country. In this interview, I speak to Mayer Mizrachi, Founder of Criptext, to discuss how, while fighting extradition to Panama he managed to launch an app, run a business and not only survive but thrive while in Colombian prison.- - - - -Timestamps:Coming soon…- - - - -The success of Defiance will be largely down to the support of you, the listener. In Where The Two Seas Meet (Fons Vitae, 2013), Hugh Talat Halman unpacks one of the most provocative narratives in the Islamic tradition. In the 18th chapter of the Qur'an, Surat al-Kahf (The Cave), a mysterious figure named Khidr (the “Green Man”), guides Moses through a series of seemingly criminal acts. These events turn out to be, rather, tests to try Moses' patience, each with divine purpose and knowledge behind it. Because of Khidr's special knowledge and status–even immortal according to some traditions–this story from the Qur'an has inspired Muslims from a variety of cultures to take interest in the relationship between Moses and Khidr as a model of discipleship, adversity, and spiritual symbolism. In his pioneering book, Halman charts the waters of literature about the story of Khidr and Moses while giving special attention to Sufi commentaries, including those of Ruzbihan Baqli, al-Qushayri, and al-Qashani. Halman also demonstrates that it was not only medieval Muslims who gravitated toward mining the spiritual wisdom of the story but also non-Muslims in the modern period, including Carl Jung, a director of a kung fu film, and others. Halman ends his monograph with a poem that synthesizes the many faces of the narrative and adds a unique personal touch to his work. Where The Two Seas Meet has undoubtedly become the authoritative English-language reference for research on the “Green Man” and provides the reader with lucid writing and ample references. Inevitably, moreover, it will also interest readers beyond the academy because of its transcultural insights and possibilities for interpretation. Learn more about your ad choices.
