"This piece was inspired by a story my father told me about when he was a student in Istanbul. One night as my father was walking through the grounds of the mosque, from out of the darkness he heard the delicate strains of a musician, the reverberations of their instrument bouncing off the pillars of the courtyard, a sound echoing and decaying like watercolour paints. For my father, it was one of the most profound experiences of his life, a purity of sound so beautiful, it brought him to tears. "Author Dr. Defne Çizakça gave me her oud when she moved back to Türkiye, and it had been languishing in a corner of my music room for a little too long. After hearing the field recording from Ayasofya, I set myself to the task of channeling the reverie of the nighttime musician my father had told me about and the oud seemed the perfect instrument to use for this track. A homage to the overlaying of place and memory, and the peacefulness and awe which the Ayasofya bestows upon us." Oud, violin and composition by Ceylan Hay. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Robyn Dawson in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Oh haaaaiiiii, book clubbers! This month, we read ‘The Island of Missing Trees' by award-winning Turkish-British author Elif Shafak. The book follows the love story between two teenagers, Kostas (a Greek Cypriot) and Defne (a Turkish Cypriot), whose forbidden romance means they can only meet at a taverna on the island between their homes. Witnessing their relationship through its ebbs and flows over the many years this story encompasses, is the fig tree that lives inside the taverna - the place of safety for Kostas and Defne. Shortlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction, ‘The Island of Missing Trees' is an intergenerational story about past pain, tradition, and enduring love. The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak is the choice for this month's Church Times Book Club. On this month's episode of the Book Club Podcast, Dr Natalie K. Watson, who has written about the book in this week's Church Times, is in conversation with Sarah Meyrick. The Island of Missing Trees is set between Cyprus in 1974, at the start of the country's conflict with Turkey, and London, decades later. Two teenagers, Kostas and Defne, from different sides of the warring parties, meet in secret at a taverna. In the middle of the taverna is an impressive fig tree. Kostas, a keen botanist, takes a cutting from his beloved Ficus carica when forced to flee to England. It is from the perspective of the fig tree that much of the story is told — a tale of love, loss, and generational trauma. Born in France (1971) to Turkish parents, Elif Shafak is an academic, author, and advocate of women's and minority rights. As an author of fiction, she has written 11 published novels in both Turkish and English. She was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2019. She now lives in London. The Island of Missing Trees is published by Penguin at £9.99 (Church Times Bookshop £8.99); 978-0-241-98872-5. To find out more, visit: nsa.edu https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/feb/20/turkey-new-6-point-4-magnitude-earthquake-hatay Turkey hit by two more powerful earthquakes two weeks after disaster A 6.4-magnitude earthquake and a second measuring 5.8 have hit Turkey’s southern province of Hatay, terrifying those left in a region devastated by twin earthquakes two weeks ago. Turkey’s interior minister, Süleyman Soylu, said that at least three people were killed and 213 wounded by the latest quakes, after a large government hospital in the city of İskenderun in the north of Hatay province declared it was evacuating patients. The latest quakes, less powerful than the 7.8- and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes that tore a path of destruction through southern Turkey and northern Syria on 6 February, threaten yet more devastation in a region where many people have fled their destroyed homes for the safety of other towns and villages outside the quake zone. The larger quake struck at a depth of just 2km (1.2 miles), the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said, potentially magnifying its impact at ground level. It was centred near the southern Turkish city of Antakya and was felt in Syria, Egypt and Lebanon. Turkey’s disaster management agency AFAD said the epicentre of the larger quake was below the Defne district of Hatay, in a region where many have complained of a lacklustre government response to the first earthquakes. The death toll in Turkey from the quakes two weeks ago rose to 41,156 on Monday, AFAD said, and was expected to climb further, with 385,000 apartments known to have been destroyed or seriously damaged and many people still missing. At least 47,000 people are estimated to have died across Turkey and Syria. The Turkish president, said construction work on nearly 200,000 apartments in 11 earthquake-hit provinces of Turkey would begin next month. Hours earlier, the US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, said on a visit to Turkey that Washington would help “for as long as it takes” as rescue operations and aftershocks were winding down and the focus turned towards urgent shelter and reconstruction work. In rebel-held Syria, local search and rescue services and the Syrian Civil Defence, also known as the White Helmets, reported the latest earthquakes had damaged buildings across a number of cities and towns. They said people had been injured by falling debris and stampedes, as well as jumping from elevated positions in fear of the destruction. https://www.theepochtimes.com/china-considering-lethal-aid-for-russia-blinken_5069273.html?utm_source=partner&utm_campaign=BonginoReport&src_src=partner&src_cmp=BonginoReport China Considering ‘Lethal’ Aid for Russia: Blinken The Chinese regime could be considering providing lethal aid to Russia, according to U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, which, if confirmed, would represent an unprecedented escalation of China’s presence in the Russia-Ukraine war. “[F]or the most part, China has been engaged in providing rhetorical, political, diplomatic support to Russia. But we have information that gives us concern that they are considering providing lethal support to Russia in the war against Ukraine,” Blinken told ABC’s “This Week” program on Sunday, after meeting with China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, at the Munich Security Conference. Wang spoke at the conference on Feb. 18 and said the Chinese regime is working on a “peace proposal” to reconcile the two sides of the conflict. Blinken indicated that the stipulated intention appears to run contrary to what is indicated in intelligence held by the United States. Wang and Blinken’s meeting marked the first face-to-face exchange between the two sides since the surveillance balloon incident that set off an uproar in the United States and forced Blinken to cancel a planned visit to Beijing, bringing the relationship between the leader of the liberal democratic world and the leader of authoritarian governments to a freezing point. Hours before the meeting, Wang described the U.S. shootdown of the Chinese spy balloon that enter U.S. airspace without permission as “hysterical,” “unimaginable,” and a violation of international norms. The Chinese regime insists that the spy balloon is a weather balloon intended mainly for research purposes; the United States rejects this contention saying that it detected other equipment onboard and downed the spy balloon with an F-22 fighter jet. In a statement following the U.S.-China exchange in Germany, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it does not “accept the U.S.’s finger-pointing or even coercion targeting China-Russia relations” and, regarding the balloon incidence, threatened that the United States “should be prepared to bear all consequence arising from an escalation.” https://thepostmillennial.com/exclusive-leaked-letter-details-james-okeefes-response-following-removal-as-ceo-of-project-veritas?utm_campaign=64487 Leaked letter details James O'Keefe's response following indefinite no-pay suspension from Project Veritas A leaked letter exclusively obtained by The Post Millennial reveals Project Veritas' founder James O'Keefe's statement to staffers on Monday after he was effectively removed from the organization by the board. The letter includes screenshots of the board's meeting on Feb. 10 in which they voted three-to-two for his "indefinite suspension as CEO without compensation" pending an "audit." https://rumble.com/v2a7mig-:james-okeefe-to-pv-staff-ive-been-removed-from-ceo-and-board.html - Play Video - Play 16:50-18:22 It is unclear if O'Keefe will resign from Project Veritas or be fired, though Project Veritas spokesman RC Maxwell said in a statement to TPM: "I unfortunately don’t have any answers for you, the Project Veritas board is in charge now." O'Keefe declined to comment. TPM understands that the board of directors plan to have a meeting and vote on Tuesday. Earlier this month, Project Veritas staffers had made allegations to the board that O'Keefe's curt leadership style was offensive to staff and donors. One large allegation of him being rude to a "high-net-worth" Oregon donor couple was refuted by the couple itself. https://twitter.com/i/status/1624529211544244224 - Play Video O'Keefe's 4,600-word letter to staffers details the emotional turmoil he and the organization have experienced in the 13 years since its founding from his parent's carriage house in New Jersey. They include what he believes are years of lawfare and corrupt criminal investigations aimed at stopping his organization from exposing powerful individuals and organizations. He also concedes to the staffers' main grievances about his leadership style. "I haven't always been the most ostensibly compassionate leader - and that is admittedly a fault, something I need to work on," he wrote. Since being suspended by the board, supporters of O'Keefe have speculated about the timing given that only days earlier Project Veritas had broken the most-viewed story in its history about a Pfizer executive who said that the pharmaceutical company worked on mutating the Covid-19 virus. O'Keefe references this in his letter. O’Keefe’s letter also includes a screenshot of an alleged text message conversation between an unnamed board member and a Project Veritas staffer discussing getting a raise if O’Keefe is removed. O'Keefe continues sharing his side of the internal dispute and closes the letter by suggesting he is prepared to start a new organization. "So our mission continues on — I'm not done. The mission will perhaps take on a new name, and it may no longer be called Project Veritas. I'll need a bunch of people around me and I will make sure sure you know how to find me." ‘’https://www.foxnews.com/media/woke-california-university-slammed-dehumanized-initiative-encouraging-students-tell-professors 'Woke' California university slammed for 'dehumanized' initiative encouraging students to tell on professors College students are pushing back against a "woke" California university for encouraging students to tell on professors for racism if they aren't called on "consistently" during class. Campus Reform correspondents Courtney McLain, Emily Sturge, and Darryl Boyer joined "Fox & Friends Weekend" to discuss the broader issues at hand with the far-left infusion of the "woke" agenda in college classrooms. California State University Monterey Bay has faced criticism for urging non-White students to report "race-related stress" under the Personal Growth and Counseling Center tab on its website. "Document acts of racism or intolerance. Don't ignore or minimize your experiences, and think broadly about what could be an act of racism. It doesn't have to be an overt act (e.g., professor consistently not calling on you or minimizing your contributions, curriculum racially biased, etc). "Document acts of racism or intolerance. Don't ignore or minimize your experiences, and think broadly about what could be an act of racism. It doesn't have to be an overt act (e.g., professor consistently not calling on you or minimizing your contributions, curriculum racially biased, etc). *) New deadly earthquakes hit Türkiye's Hatay province At least three people have been killed and 213 others wounded after another earthquake jolted Türkiye's southern Hatay province, the country's interior minister said. Suleyman Soylu said at a news briefing on Monday evening that search and rescue efforts are under way at three sites. Turkish disaster ma nagement agency AFAD said the magnitude 6.4 earthquake took place at around 8:04 pm local time (1704GMT) in Hatay's Defne district. It was followed by a magnitude 5.8 earthquake three minutes later, with the epicentre in Hatay's Samandag district. *) US to continue its 'full support' after two more quakes hit Türkiye The US will continue to offer its full support after two more earthquakes jolted Türkiye's southernmost province of Hatay, the White House has said. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan wrote on Twitter that the US is “deeply concerned by the news of earthquakes impacting areas already devastated in Türkiye and Syria.” It came as magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 quakes centred in Kahramanmaras struck 10 other provinces on February 6, killing at least 41,000 people in Türkiye and another 5,800 in Syria. *) Erdogan: More than 1.68M quake-affected people provided shelter Türkiye has provided shelter to over 1.68 million people who were affected by the original twin earthquakes that jolted the country's southeast, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced. The construction of nearly 200,000 houses in quake-hit areas is also set to begin in March, Erdogan said during a briefing at the heavily affected Hatay province. The majority of the construction work will be focused on the Hatay, Kahramanmaras, and Malatya provinces, with over 40,000 houses to be built in each province. *) Biden announces more military aid for Ukraine during Kiev visit US President Joe Biden has promised increased arms deliveries for Ukraine during a surprise visit to Kiev. Biden met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shortly after arriving in the country's capital as fighting nears its one year anniversary on Thursday. He then announced an additional half-billion dollars in US assistance, including shells for howitzers, anti-tank missiles, air surveillance radars and other aid but no new advanced weaponry. *) Israeli settlement expansion threatens peace, UNSC warns The UN Security Council has unanimously denounced Israeli plans to greatly expand its construction of settlements in the occupied West Bank. The lengthy statement, read aloud in the council chambers, "expresses deep concern and dismay with Israel's announcement” of further construction and expansion of settlements. The statement further condemned all acts of violence against civilians, including those that have targeted Palestinians and Israelis, and called "on all parties to observe calm and restraint.” Last week, Israel's government moved to advance 10,000 new settlement homes in the occupied West Bank, and retroactively legalise nine settler outposts that were previously illegal under Israeli law. The announcement drew stern international backlash.

Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. **Tai-Ex opening ** The Tai-Ex opened down 16-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 15,536 on turnover of $1.9-billion N-T. Most shares in Asia were subdued yesterday, as a holiday in the US led to a slow start for global stock markets. Investors were still awaiting minutes from the last Federal Reserve meeting for a hint of what's to come for inflation and interest rates changes. **Rights groups urge government to ease migrant worker vacation rules ** Migrants rights groups rallied outside the Executive Yuan in Taipei yesterday, to demand the government overturn what they called discriminatory obstacles, faced by workers who vacation in their home countries. Dozens of migrant workers led by the Migrants Empowerment Network in Taiwan, and the Domestic Caretakers Union Taoyuan, held up banners and placards urging the government to abolish (廢除) complicated border regulations that they say target blue-collar migrant workers. The DCU secretary says that unlike foreign white-collar professionals and Taiwanese, blue-collar migrant workers have always needed to apply for a re-entry permit from the National Immigration Agency, to re-enter Taiwan and are required to enter Taiwan by the expiration date on the permit. In addition, when the worker arrives in Taiwan, they are not allowed to leave the airport on their own and must be signed for and collected by their employer or an individual assigned by the employer. **Turkey New Quake Leaves More Dead and Injured ** A new 6.4 magnitude earthquake has killed three people and injured more than 200 in parts of Turkey laid waste two weeks ago by a massive (巨大的) quake that killed tens of thousands. Officials said more buildings collapsed, trapping some people, while scores of injuries were recorded in neighboring Syria too. Monday's earthquake was centered in the town of Defne, in Turkey's Hatay province, one the worst-hit regions in the magnitude 7.8 quake that hit on Feb. 6-th. It was felt across the region and followed by a second, magnitude 5.8 temblor. Rescue efforts were underway in three collapsed buildings where six people were believed trapped. **US Supreme Court Mulls Tech Online Speech Law ** The US Supreme Court is set to hear a landmark case that could transform (改革) the Internet. Gonzalez versus Google is being brought by the family of a woman killed by an ISIS gunman in Paris in 2015. It will tackle whether tech companies should be liable for harmful content promoted by their algorithms. Kate Fisher reports from Washington **Egypt Unveils Newly Renovated Museum Wing ** Egypt's ministry of tourism and antiquities has unveiled a newly renovated (重新裝修) wing of its oldest museum. The new wing is home to a 16-meter-long papyrus scroll unearthed last year. The refurbishment marks the first stage of broader renovations for the 120-year-old museum in downtown Cairo. The new papyrus contains around 113 spells from The Book of the Dead. The museum also has added modern glass protection and new interior lighting. For the 28th episode of the podcast, I had the honour to host Defne Erdur. Defne (TR/FR/IT) is a mover, researcher and a therapist working in the fields of performing arts, health and education. She is trained in Contemporary Dance , Sociology, Expressive Art Therapy and Trauma Healing. I met Defne a decade ago, while we were both teaching in the First Austrian Contact Festival. About two year ago, during the early time of Covid, there was big discussion on my Facebook wall around the topic of race. It was a very heated space and Defne and I decided to shift the conversation over to ZOOM. we started to meet online every second week for a period of few months. These meeting were extremely valuable for me and it started the spark in me that led to the creation of the podcast. We both have very different perspective on many topics but no matter how hard we disagree, we always manage to find a space in which we can peacefully co exist and exchange. Sarah speaks with Defne Suman about her historical fiction book, The Silence of Scheherazade: "September 1905. At the heart of the Ottoman Empire, in the ancient city of Smyrna, Scheherazade is born to an opium-dazed mother. At the very same moment, an Indian spy sails into the golden-hued, sycamore-scented city with a secret mission from the British Empire. When he leaves, 17 years later, it will be to the smell of kerosene and smoke as the city, and its people, are engulfed in flames. Told through the intertwining fates of a Levantine, a Greek, a Turkish and an Armenian family, this unforgettable novel reveals a city, and a culture, now lost to time."
