10 years is a pretty significant chunk of time, in any walk of life. So you can't blame Brian Dickson, who helped start one of the UK's most popular modern breweries, of being proud of how far Northern Monk has come in that first decade. And if you work in and around the craft beer industry, you probably know Brian. There's a strong chance you've probably brewed with him, too. Such is his appetite for working with others. A meeting at a beer festival with fellow co-founder Russell Bisset would set the duo on a path to grow a business that produces countless beers, has won a wealth of awards and exports to numerous countries. The brewery also employs a team of nearly 100, too. And with their popular Hop City festival on the horizon this May, we recently visited Brian at the Northern Monk Refectory in Holbeck, Leeds, to discuss their achievements in that first decade, the importance of working with the community, and the brewery's collective desire to give people the best beer experiences they possibly can.

Before becoming an elected member of the Syracuse City Common Council, our guest, Joe Driscoll, played worldwide and formed a fantastic duo with Sekou Kouyate, a Guinean musician considered one of the most innovative virtuosic players of the kora, the 21-stringed West African harp. Joe's relationship with music started when he was a kid; his mother would use music as a pacifier to soothe little Joe's rambunctious and hyper-energetic personality. Fast forward many years, Joe decided to travel to London and then tour around Europe, where he would meet Sekou at a festival in Marseille. Together, they played at hundreds of festivals and venues across Europe, North America, and Africa, generating incendiary musical reactions whenever they set foot on stage. In this episode, we delve into Joe's fascinating life story. We talk about how he developed his unique style, blending folk, funk, and hip-hop, his decision to leave the US, and the breathtaking experience of playing for tens of thousands of people at festivals all over the world. We also talk about his passion for beatboxing, the influence Colin Aberdeen had on his career, and the magical moment when he was locked in a room with Sekou, both non-speakers of each other language, and managed to write a whole album together. Joe also shared why he decided to come back to America and participate in Bernie Sanders' campaign and why he decided to get involved and become an elected official. Tune in and listen to episode 2 of Front Row Syracuse and get a closer look at this progressive politician, talented musician, and gifted son of Syracuse. Some Questions I Ask:What was your first musical influence? How did you get hooked? And when did you first know that it was your calling? (2:15)You went off to college for a short while, which wasn't your calling. So you ended up back here trying to make it as a musician. Could you talk a bit about that? We talk about what he learned from those early days in the coffee industry and how he eventually made the switch to serving and bartending. Through Fifth Group Restaurants in Atlanta, he passionately learned about spirits and craft cocktails until ultimately landing in their fine dining concept, Ecco. He says this is where he truly fell in love with wine. Now working in wine retail, he's the wine buyer at Hop City Craft Beer & Wine's Krog Street Market location with a passion for helping consumers navigate the wide world of natural wine. We talk about this wine category and the multiple aspects of how it can be defined, and he gives a few tips for how to best keep exploring new regions and types of wine production - we even chat about my "wine vs beer" studies given Hop City's incredible inventory for both worlds. Hailing from Leeds, sometimes referred to as the ‘London of the North’, Northern Monk began underground in a damp cellar with little more than £5000 - a gift from founder Russell Bisset’s grandparents - and an adventurous northern spirit. Since those heady days of reinvesting the profits into a sesh on the beers, Bisset and head brewer Brian Dickson quickly pulled ahead in the British beer scene, embracing a wide variety of beer styles, all brewed to exceeding high standards. In addition core range beers such as Heathen - a resinous tropical IPA - and the soft, smoothing juiciness of its smaller counterpart, Faith, Northern Monk deliver a wide range of beers from light 2.8% Striding Edge - a beer that carries an immense amount of flavour for a beer so small - to colossal Imperial Stouts left to mature in bourbon barrels and Triple IPAs bursting with sticky hoppiness. Their striving for creative perfection doesn’t stop there: the Patreon's Project fosters a collaboration between the brewery, artists and athletes across the North of England. Cross pollinating ideas with creatives, each project is treated in the same way that you’d approach buying a vinyl record: the anticipation of collecting it from the record store and sitting with the artwork - in this case a peel-and-reveal label containing information on the collaboration - and devouring the contents in a thoughtful, reflective manner. if that wasn’t enough, Northern Monk have host two of the most revered beer festivals in the annual calendar. Hop City in spring and Dark City in the autumn celebrate the very best in hop-forward or dark and wild beers with a huge array of national and international brewers pouring across sessions at their respective festivals. If you’ve never experienced these events for yourself, hosted at The Refectory above The Old Flax Store, then you truly haven’t lived. Northern Monk have established themselves well beyond the confines of this small but arguably great nation and are sold in no less than 23 countries across the world. Not bad considering the brewery, a mere 7 years old this year, started in a damp cellar in Leeds. But Northern Monk still have plenty of tricks left up their sleeve even with the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. In this episode, recorded on a snowy January day, Russell joins me to talk about everything monk: the quaint beginnings and stories from yesteryear, their unlikely pilgrimage up a mountain to brew a high ABV beer at even higher altitudes, how the business has had to adapt over the years, and the various creative endeavours that these pioneering freespirits have brought to the craft beer scene.     THIS WEEK'S EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY... Mau Mau may be infamous for their fierceness and long dreadlocks, all part of the insurgency by Kenyan rebels against British colonial administration in the mid 1950's. Their doggedness and tenacity ensured that the nation of Kenya would one day enjoy the freedom and sovereignty that it does today. Speaking of that tenacity and resolve, over half a century after that uprising, a group of Kenyan youth known as Ukoo Fulani Mau Mau brought an insurgency of their own – albeit a musical revolution. Tired with the lack of meaningful content, they come correct with their messages of religious, social and political injustices in today's society. Yet in the midst of this radical hip-hop group, there stands a star, as bold and intrepid as the best of them, yet with a heart made tender by the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. Meet young gun Juliani. His ascent up the Gospel entertainment scene may have come rather quickly, but he's been in the game for a minute, honing his mic skills and toning his spiritual muscle – all in readiness to serve Gospel fans a special lyrical feast. Juliani admits to being a ‘spiritual guy' from his early years, having been raised in a strict Christian environment. Yet the message of Christ made no sense to him for many years, he was content to just drift through life, seeing where and how it would take him.

"Drinkin' Beer." It's a beer that you always keep stocked in the fridge or cooler, ready to go after a hard day of work or relaxing at the beach or a party. Red Hare Brewing Company aims to be the craft beer that's stocking that fridge or cooler. We talked to Roger Davis, Managing Partner and Bobby Thomas, Head Brewer of Red Hare on the show. We talked about their start, born out of the recession of 2008-09, and the importance of canning their offerings.   Truck and Tap's beers of the week? Red Hare's SPF 50/50 "IPR," an India Pale Radler with grapefruit soda. And their newest creation, Cotton Tail Orange Creamsic-Ale, an orange/vanilla take on their pale ale.  Tim's Whales of the week are Orpheus Brewing's Even The Furies Wept. We sampled this earlier in the year on the show, and now it's available. Also, Three Taverns Night On Ponce IPA, which is their second can release.  The Hot list includes the Georgia launch of Hi-Wire Brewing, as well as Wish You Were Beer's third anniversary week. Details at beerguysradio.com. Next week? We'll be talking all things bottle shops with Hop City and Whole Foods. Join us on the socials for even more beer happenings across the southeast!
